[Q] Can You Please Help Me Install My First ROM? - HTC EVO 3D

Attention: I am a n00b and this is the first time im ever installing a custom ROM to any Android phone. Please provide detailed instructions so I can actually do it!
I have a rooted EVO 3D hboot 1.4 kernel version 2.6.35.10-gcb1cf83 build number 1.13.651.7 CL83920 release-keys
I want to install this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466362 (MeanROM) on my phone. This requires updating my firmware (i think?), which is what I was having problems with when I tried to do this myself.
This is what happens when i try to update the firmware:
I tried doing this 2 ways: using adb to push "freeza's all in one firmware update" (which the ROM instructs me to install), and using Finder on Mac to just drag "freeza's all in one firmware update" straight onto my sd card. I use ClockworkMod 5.0.2 and press install zip, select it, and confirm, and it reads back like this:
Installing: /sdcard/PG86IMG.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/PG86IMG.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
Because I couldn't update my firmware, I decided not to proceed installing the ROM for fear of bricking my phone. I was wondering if anyone could try and help me figure out 1) why it wont install the update, and 2) how i can install the update and the ROM?
PLEASE HELP!
Also, im not sure if this might help, but on the MeanROM thread it says "If you are already running the above firmware and one of the stock deodexed 2.17.651.5 ROMs, you should be OK wiping cache/dalvik and then just flashing this ROM." Does that mean that if i cant figure out how to update my firmware i can just get that stock deodexed ROM and then install MeanROM?
Thank you in advance!

To update firmware you wanna boot your phone into bootloader and your phone will ask you to update from there. Once your firmware is updated then make a backup and put the ROM on your SD and that is what you can flash from recovery. Most do recommend twrp recovery and not clockwork for meanrom...

Can you explain to me with a little detail how to do that please? Because thats what I tried to do earlier and i couldnt figure it out. Also, if TWRP is recommended, is there a way that i can flash twrp and remove clockwork?

To boot into bootloader turn on your phone holding volume down button. You can install twrp recovery by downloading the img file and flashing it with the app flash image GUI. Using the app is pretty self explanatory.
Edit: also make sure the firmware updater is named PG86IMG.zip and is on the root of your SD card. Make sure to rename the file or move it after you've updated.

Thank you so much! i will try this tonight and let you know how it goes

So I flashed TWRP v2.0.0 perfectly okay. I then tried to update the firmware through TWRP and this is what i got:
E:Unable to stat '/sd-ext/.'
E:Unable to open zip file.
The progress bar at the bottom has been going to infinity since i tried to update the firmware and there is no way i can get out of TWRP...help!

so i figured out how to exit the recovery finally using adb, but now im back at the original problem: i cant get twrp to open the zip. from looking online, it appears that it may have something to do with the MD5...although i dont know what that means. Just a thought...

That means redownload the rom, kernel,or whatever you were trying to flash again and reflash it. A bad/corrupt md5
usually means that some how a file within the zip got corrupted.

Bootloader and recovery are different. The firmware is flashed through bootloader. To get into bootloader, power on holding volume down and power.

ClockworkMod recovery released!

Hey guys!
The ClockworkMod recovery has been released. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787168 Check out this post and do what it says. Once it is finished go download ROM Manager from the Market and update your recovery! I will have a rom out ASAP after I get it tested :] If you wanna test email me at [email protected]
Which of those 3 zip files needs to be flashed ?
So does that mean that samsung reviewed and fixed the code they released or was there something that the devs were missing when trying to build the kernel?

This is not built from source, this is a duct taped together version of recovery, it should work for now though.
I've got CWM running on my Fascinate! =)
Too bad it doesn't mount the SDcard and it places nandroid backups in /data, but it's a start. =)
Do we flash it in ODIN using the PDA box ?

good stuff!
Very exciting news.. Looking forward to coming home and giving it a try.. at least making a full nandroid backup.. I've had to rebuild this phone from scratch way too many times now.
I'm not really clear on the instructions.
I have downloaded the captivate_recovery.zip but I'm not sure how to proceed from that point. Am I using Odin?
This isn't working for me, I flashed the tar file in ODIN and then installed clockwork from rom manager. When I click reboot into recovery it loads up a stock recovery and gives some errors under it.
Update with more info:
When I reboot into recovery from RomManager I get
e: failed to verify whole-file signature
e: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I'm thinking this means the ODIN flash didn't work correctly
Maybe someone could post clear step-by-step instructions?
what tar file cheeto. all i'm seeing is three zip files, that when unzipped have no extension. a little help?

You flashed a new recovery kernel with the clockworkmod recovery binary. I'm confused why you would try and install again, on top of it, from ROM manager? (Don't take that the wrong way.. that's not an "OMG Why would you do that?!" It's an "I'm not following your logic".. )
Re-do your initial step (flash recovery via odin) and that should be it, unless I'm missing something here.
and for those of us still out of the loop... how do you flash the recovery via odin? add a .tar to the file in the zip? rename the .zip file to .tar? help us out please.

Hang in there, I know it's frustrating. Let us get some more feedback on this and how it's working before the steps are broken down so that anyone can follow along. The last thing we all want to see is post after post from people who did this not knowing how to fix their phones if something goes wrong.
If you're confident you know what's going on, the posts are there, in the Fascinate forum, on how to use odin. Feel free to check them out.
BE CAREFUL EVERYONE. there are quite a few issues with cwm still, It doesn't detect the sdcard, so you wont be able to flash a backup. and you can only get into recovery by rebooting into recovery through rom manager.

Error while installing custom ROM

E:Short write of /tmp/sideload/package.zip (No space left on device)
The phone is rooted as I've searched on google and what little I could find says to have it rooted. Not exactly sure what to try. I've wiped and reset everything and still a no go. Doesn't matter which ROM is selected either. Thank you.

Do you have Clockwork recovery installed on your phone? How are you trying to install these custom ROMs? Are you using ROM Manager?
You don't need root to flash a Rom...
Get Odin
Get an Odin flashable version of cwm
Flash said recovery with Odin
Boot into recovery by holding all the buttons till you feel a vibrant and letting off the power button, or the adb command: adb reboot recovery (or since you have root, download a terminal emulator from the market enter the command: reboot recovery, then Grant superuser permission.)
Then Flash Rom in cwm...
Old version of TWRP maybe?
To run the ROM Manager I needed root access. I tried to load the ROM from the ROM Manager and also straight from manual recovery mode.

Go read my post above...
THIS IS A LINK TO CWM TOUCH...JUST CLICK ANYWHERE HERE AND GET THE ODIN FLASHABLE VERSION
You do not need root to flash a Rom... Rom manager is not needed, and in fact just causes more problems than is worth
I don't think ROMmanager is even capable of flashing anything on the note. Someone correct me if I am wrong
You're correct...i wish that app would just go away and be erased from people's memories.
Actually i don't think Rom manager has worked on any Samsung device since eclair...as froyo was when they introduced 3e recovery, which requires signed update.zips, which only Samsung has the signature tool for.
So the update.zip Rom manager downloads to flash cwm with just gets stuck at "E: signature verification failed"
I'm still getting errors I'm going to search on youtube some more and see what could possibly be an issue. I go in with Up+home+power and erase everything I can in there and try to load from .zip and errors.
So I got it to work. I didn't really do anything differently except put it on my external SD card instead of my internal.

Remove twrp2 and return to CWM?!?

I installed twrp2 on my I717 Galaxy Note and want to return back to CWM. Does anyone know how to do this? I have all my backups in CWM and want to go back.

That's for recovery, the Mets-inf folder is the script to write the recovery.img
That's weird, You may try downloading the zip fresh, or if ask else fails grab the Odin flashable tar and use that.

Yup.
Given you download the correct file for this device.
If that still fails, which I dunno why I would, it should go without saying The Odin file, will need Odin a pc and a Usb cable

That has the Odin flashable cwm touch file... that version is outdated so after flashing that, you'll have cwm, but flashing a newer Rom zip might end up with a "status 7 error" in recovery.
At that point I'd personally use goo manager go grab the latest version of a cwm zip, that'll be usable in the version of cwm I posted above.

Are you saying I should _not_ use TWRP to put CWM on?
No, it should work, just saying if it still gives you the proverbial finger, Odin is your friend and that version is just the latest with an Odin .tar
So to have your cake (cwm) and eat it too (flash new roms) you'll need to update your recovery from that older version of cwm
So you said you get an error when you tap to install? You should be flashing that zip in recovery like you would a ROM or mod. Is that what you did? After it installs just reboot recovery within twrp and bam!!! You'll have cwm.
Thanks so much for your help...my problem remains, so I may go back to a stock ROM for T-Mobile, since that is my provider, and see if I can solve it... Before I installed CWM, I could sms/mms to my e-mail address...I can't any longer.

Can't Flash CM9

I flashed back to stock AT&T, rooted, added Superuser, installed CWM, downloaded the CM9 stable zip from their site, put it on SD (tried internal and external, not that it should make any difference...), and keep getting this:
Installing: /sdcard/cm-9.0.0-quincyatt.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "SGH-I717" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "SGH-I717" || getprop("ro.product.device") == "quincyatt" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "quincyatt"
E:Error in /sdcard/cm-9.0.0-quincyatt.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Was it a bad download, perhaps? Seems unlikely, but you never know I suppose.... The only thing I can come up with is that I'm on kernel 2.whatever and the screenshots I see with 4.0+ have 3.0.8. If this is the problem, how can I get that kernel on my Note before flashing CM9 again?
Please let me know if I'm missing any other important information needed to help solve this awful stock phone problem

No, he needs to update his recovery which can be done via ROM manager if he wants to keep cwm. Twrp 2.2.1.1 also works.
CWM 5.8.4.8 is what ROM manager should install for you. If you give them money ROM manager can install the touch CWM 5.8.4.3. All of these versions work to flash cm9, cm10, or any other ROM.

For the life of me I can't get CWM to update. I got 5.8.4.8 from their site, which is just a recovery img, put it on the SD card as is, didn't do anything, made it a zip to try to run it as update.zip, won't do it. I deleted the existing CWM folders, put the new one on there, and it still loads 5.5.0.4. Tried formatting everything, didn't work. ROM manager won't do anything for me either.

I got an error in the command prompt when I tried adb, and I tried to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery in ROM manager but it installed 5.0 (wtf); since I can't get CWM to update to 5.8 I gave up and reflashed to stock, rerooted, reinstalled Superuser, put the TWRP 2.2.1.1 zip on my SD (openrecovery-twrp-2.2.1.1-sgh-i717-signed.zip), but when I try to install it gets a quarter of the way through and I get this:

Haha, ok. So you are Odin'd back to stock and stock recovery. I would use Odin to install the cwm from braways thread in dev section. Then you will have cwm and can flash stuff (like twrp). Once you flash latest twrp you will be set to flash any Rom. Hope that helps.
You can't flash this stuff from stock 3e recovery.
Good luck.

That's exactly what I used last time, the download for CWM there gave me 5.5 which caused the rest of my (initial) problems. After reflashing stock, I tried to put 5.8 on the SD and install the zip, and it wouldn't do that either. I'll give that another shot since TWRP isn't working either....
Finally got it: had to reinstall CWM 5.5 so I could install TWRP 2.2.1.1 and then it let me flash CM9. I swear I tried that already; I guess it just needed to be rubbed the right way. Thanks for the help!

Whats the best way to update to CWM recovery? I'm still a bit inexperienced with all this, since this is my first android.
Flash latest CWM

The easiest way is to install ROM Manager from the play store and run it.

You can download the latest zip (6.0.4.3) and flash in your current recovery, or use a tool from the market place. Something like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=en

I am only able to access recovery mode, so (unless I'm missing something) the Play store options are out.

So I can just flash the 6.0.4.3 zip just as I would a ROM? Also, this link only supplies a .img file. Where can I find the .zip?

Have to tried flashing your previous ROM back onto your device? You do still have it on your sdcard, right?

Live and learn! :good:
We have all been there. Always make a backup before flashing anything.
I also was not able to flash CM11 using TWRP... Assuming you can transfer files to your SD Card (microsd adapter maybe?) try flashing a 4.2 touchwiz based rom and see if that gets your phone to boot. Once you are back on, download the ROM Manager app and use it to install CWM. Then reboot into recovery (it will now be CWM) and flash CM11. Make sure you have the correct google apps zip as well.
Question... did you wipe memory/cache?
