[Q] CM11 nightly for Verizon Note 2 failed flash - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm in the process of flashing CM11 from JellyBeans, and am stuck booting into recovery mode. I attempted to flash the latest CM11 nightly release using TWRP recovery 2.5.0, which failed. I then tried to reboot and it said that I had "lost root permissions" and asked if I wanted to fix them, which I agreed to. Now it will only boot into the TWRP recovery mode.
Here is the text from when I try to flash the file.
Checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found.
E: Error executing updater binary in zip '/external_sdcard/cm-11-20131230-NIGHTLY-i605.zip'
Error flashing zip '/external_sdcard/cm-11-20131230-NIGHTLY-i605.zip'

[with a bold red FAILED below this text box]
Any ideas on why it won't flash, and what it will take to fix it in this state?

Update your recovery

Whats the best way to update to CWM recovery? I'm still a bit inexperienced with all this, since this is my first android.

Flash latest CWM

The easiest way is to install ROM Manager from the play store and run it.

You can download the latest zip (6.0.4.3) and flash in your current recovery, or use a tool from the market place. Something like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=en

I am only able to access recovery mode, so (unless I'm missing something) the Play store options are out.

So I can just flash the 6.0.4.3 zip just as I would a ROM? Also, this link only supplies a .img file. Where can I find the .zip?

Have to tried flashing your previous ROM back onto your device? You do still have it on your sdcard, right?

Live and learn! :good:
We have all been there. Always make a backup before flashing anything.
I also was not able to flash CM11 using TWRP... Assuming you can transfer files to your SD Card (microsd adapter maybe?) try flashing a 4.2 touchwiz based rom and see if that gets your phone to boot. Once you are back on, download the ROM Manager app and use it to install CWM. Then reboot into recovery (it will now be CWM) and flash CM11. Make sure you have the correct google apps zip as well.
Question... did you wipe memory/cache?

ClockworkMod recovery released!

Hey guys!
The ClockworkMod recovery has been released. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787168 Check out this post and do what it says. Once it is finished go download ROM Manager from the Market and update your recovery! I will have a rom out ASAP after I get it tested :] If you wanna test email me at [email protected]
Which of those 3 zip files needs to be flashed ?
So does that mean that samsung reviewed and fixed the code they released or was there something that the devs were missing when trying to build the kernel?

This is not built from source, this is a duct taped together version of recovery, it should work for now though.
I've got CWM running on my Fascinate! =)
Too bad it doesn't mount the SDcard and it places nandroid backups in /data, but it's a start. =)
Do we flash it in ODIN using the PDA box ?

good stuff!
Very exciting news.. Looking forward to coming home and giving it a try.. at least making a full nandroid backup.. I've had to rebuild this phone from scratch way too many times now.
I'm not really clear on the instructions.
I have downloaded the captivate_recovery.zip but I'm not sure how to proceed from that point. Am I using Odin?
This isn't working for me, I flashed the tar file in ODIN and then installed clockwork from rom manager. When I click reboot into recovery it loads up a stock recovery and gives some errors under it.
Update with more info:
When I reboot into recovery from RomManager I get
e: failed to verify whole-file signature
e: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I'm thinking this means the ODIN flash didn't work correctly
Maybe someone could post clear step-by-step instructions?
what tar file cheeto. all i'm seeing is three zip files, that when unzipped have no extension. a little help?

You flashed a new recovery kernel with the clockworkmod recovery binary. I'm confused why you would try and install again, on top of it, from ROM manager? (Don't take that the wrong way.. that's not an "OMG Why would you do that?!" It's an "I'm not following your logic".. )
Re-do your initial step (flash recovery via odin) and that should be it, unless I'm missing something here.
and for those of us still out of the loop... how do you flash the recovery via odin? add a .tar to the file in the zip? rename the .zip file to .tar? help us out please.

Hang in there, I know it's frustrating. Let us get some more feedback on this and how it's working before the steps are broken down so that anyone can follow along. The last thing we all want to see is post after post from people who did this not knowing how to fix their phones if something goes wrong.
If you're confident you know what's going on, the posts are there, in the Fascinate forum, on how to use odin. Feel free to check them out.
BE CAREFUL EVERYONE. there are quite a few issues with cwm still, It doesn't detect the sdcard, so you wont be able to flash a backup. and you can only get into recovery by rebooting into recovery through rom manager.

Errors in CWM

E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
It gives me this when I try and backup and when I try to load update.zip on it, what should I do?

If you havent already download Rom Manager and reflash CWM. Soemtimes people tell you to flash an older version then reflash the newest version.

Whenever I try to install an older version, I get a message saying "An error occurred while downloading your recovery" I've tried it on 3G and Wifi, and I can download other things just fine.
Do you have the update.zip for CWM still on your sdcard? If so reboot into recovery using the power and volume key, it should take you to the Samsung recovery, then go to apply update.zip.

I just get sent back to CWM and I get the same error. Would removing ROM Manager remove CWM?
In order to have a fully working rom manager, you have to flash the clockworkmod.tar kernal. I was having the exact same issues, I couldn't do a backup or restore. You will have to do odin on your phone.

Exactly.
You cannot install CWM without odin / redbend / etc. There are no shortcuts. Just downloading ROM Manager and hoping that you're special or lucky is not enough to make this work.
Follow the instructions.
I guess I had assumes he had already done that.

Do you have a custom recovery such as clockworkmod recovery or TWRP installed? If not the only way to whipe dalvik cache is to do a factory reset in the stock recovery. Before you install a custom ROM you should install a custom recovery.

No problem man glad to help, but yes "recovery" is for recovering something when something with your ROM goes wrong, but it can also be used for basic maintenance functions such as reformatting things, as well as flashing certain scripts, kernels, mods etc.

You installed CWM (Clockworkmod Recovery correct?) if you did go under "install zip from sdcard", then "toggle signature verification" and it make sure it says signature check: disabled this should allow you to flash the ROM.

Try running the fix permission utility in ROM manager, see if that solves your problem. You should also be able to use CWM recovery to fix permissions as well.

[Q] TWRP Error, Unable to install OS

Hey everyone,
I'm in a desperate hurry now, after hours of trying to get an operational phone again.
I have a Sprint Galaxy S3 that I was trying to put CM10.2 on using twrp, but I kept getting the error "Error executing updater binary in zip". HOWEVER, during the process of trying to get it to work, I accidentally did a wipe of my internal storage as well-- wiping my os. Now, all im trying to do is get a working rom so that I can start over, but every rom I try to install using twrp gives me the same error. Can anyone help me get a working OS again??? I can still boot to twrp, but it's not allowing any installation of any OS.
Thanks
What version of TWRP are you using? You might need to update to a newer version. If you are really stuck, then you can restock with Odin and redo the recovery/rom/etc.
Try to replace updater binary in zip with another version. Try to use stock rom binary

I'm using TWRP v2.7.1.0
I have no idea how to update a binary.
If you are wanting to stick with CM10.2 over CM11, then try one of the older TWRPs like 2.6.3.0. Or download the CM11 zip for your phone and use 7zip to open as archive and you can grab the binary in the folder META-INF > com > google > android > update-binary from it and move it to the other zip in the same spot. Make sure to open as archive because if you unzip, it will break the zip's signature and not flash correctly either.

Ok, so I've found the binary you were talking about. What do I change? The error that I currently get (like many other threads that address a similar issue, but not this particular one) is "Error executing updater binary in zip '/external_sd/cm-11-20140210-SNAPSHOT-M3-d2spr.zip'"
At this point, can you tell me how to reset to factory? I think I could accomplish what I'm going for if i could get back to factory again.

there's no flashing option on stock recovery.
Only at TWRP (or other custom recovery) Flash directly from there.
Rooting has nothin to do with it.

Oh, that error means the ROM might be faulty or you're flashing the wrong one.
Be ensure of the ROM first.
