[Q] Does flashing the CWM Beta via ODIN trip the ROM counter? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

[Q] Does flashing the CWM Beta via ODIN trip the ROM counter?
I am asking because the CWM Dev does not actually have a device. If the answer is yes then why? I am asking because on the 2.3.6 compiles on the SR it does not trip the counter (when running UCLA3).
And yes I read the CWM thread and after about 20 pages, I stopped. From the posts I read, I did not see anyone indicate the status of their counter...

I believe it trips any flash but don't quote me on it
Sent from the only smartphone designed by Chuck Norris

It does. Using ODIN to flash anything from the SYSTEM or below will trip it.
I don't understand why people put so much emphasis on the counter, to be honest. There's never been an actual denial of warranty (that we know of) from it. Even then, Samsung themselves would have to look for it, AT&T sure doesn't care.
Also, 95% of the time, someone finds a way to reset the counters anyway.

I did more reading and found posts from mashi and da_g. They indicate the counter will trip when flashing the kernel and CWM via ODIN. At least it is this way on the Note. I know on the GS II SR, you could flash CWM via ODIN and not trip the counter. Anyway I am now rooted with no counter trip thanks to mashi.

you can flash CWM via ADB in about 30 seconds and not trip the counter.

Used a guide to root my phone. Did it count as a flash?

I used this guide to root my phone:
forums.androidcentral.com/t-galaxy-s-ii/124047-how-root-t-galaxy-s-ii.html
It's a i777. I then read AFTER the fact (strange it wasnt mentioned in the guide. I know, my fault!) that the Flash Counter updates if you boot into download mode. This voids your warranty.
-Does rooting my phone using that guide really update my Flash Counter?
-And If so, is there a way to reset it in case something happens to my phone?
Planning on flashing CM7 or UnNamed tomorrow, so just curious.

Rooting the phone has nothing to do with the flash counter thingy...
When you root using SuperOneClick Rooter, the phone never goes into
download mode at all since there is NO reason to go into download mode
for just for rooting.
I know there are other methods of rooting besides SuperOneClick but
if any of the other methods require download mode I would NOT use it.
Not only because the counter, but each time we do anything in download mode we are taking a
small risk of bricking the phone so only use the download mode if you really have to and there
is no other way to do something you want to do.
That's one of the reasons why all these custom roms are zip files and
not TAR. There is way less of a chance to really damage the phone if
we use zipfiles for roms or mods or anything else.
If you want to check if the counter is started, go into download mode
by using the 2 volume control method.
Press both vol+/vol- and hold them press, then plug in the usb cable
from computer to phone.
When the screen comes up with a warning, just press vol up to continue and
look for the the word binary counter, it should say "NO" if counter is turned off.
Just booting into download mode does not trip the counter. Flashing a custom kernel via Odin or heimdall is how the binary counter gets tripped (note: flashing a stock kernel via Odin our heimdall will not trip the counter)
You can tell if you tripped the counter by
1. Seeing i9100 + yellow triangle warning sign on boot splash screen
2. Booting into download mode via volume up/down USB connect and read the counter directly
See this thread for in depth info

thanks a bunch guys! Yeah, I see a yellow warning when I boot it up. Just heading to bed, will give that thread a look tomorrow.
But it should be possible to erase and reset the counter with a 'jig'?

Believe it or not, but I have never went into download mode
for any reason without the jig I purchased about two years ago.
It's not because of the counter issue with our phones but it's just
just way too convenient to use the jig.
I just heard about the counter issue here on XDA after purchasing
this i777 phone.
The Captivate and the Infuse phones I had before did not have
a counter issue.

Actually, the Infuse does if you flashed the H1 OTA, or the Gingerbread bootloaders from J2.

That thread is definitely the way to go, IMO. This method will not trip the counter. Once you complete this method, you will be able to flash using CWM. CWM will not trip the counter, or the yellow triangle, when flashing.

[Q] Chainfire's Triangle Away App

Hi all.
My SGS2 needs to be sent in for repairs in the imminent future, and in preparation I unrooted my phone and flashed a Stock ICS build (my carrier is Optus, Australia). Before this I was running a few different GB roms. When I boot my phone I do not get the yellow triangle (I assume this is because I am running official Samsung firmware), but if I put the phone into download mode, it still shows the 8 custom flashes I did earlier.
My real question is will Chainfire's Triangle Away app remove the binary count even if the triangle isn't there?
And a better question would be, would having official firmware be enough to still claim warranty, or would I need to have both official firmware and a "0" custom flash count?
Thanks for any help!
I believe Samsung may throw a stink about the counter, even if you are on stock/official firmware. This counter would imply that you have voided your warranty previous to the current state of the phone and it's OS
To be safe I would use the Triangle away app
EDIT: Yes, the app does reset the flash counter. See https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.triangleaway&hl=en
Its always safe to clear the counter before returning it for service. yes the triangle away app will clear the counter with/without triangle.
download it for free from here

Thanks guys!
I tried to run the app but it's telling me I need Superuser access...
Does this mean I need to root the phone, use the triangle away app, then UNroot the phone?
Sorry if this is obvious... Not overly confident of my ability to keep the phone unbricked haha.

You are correct. Root the phone first, use the app, then unroot.
Thanks!
So it will still think it's Samsung official after that process?
You'll need a rooted ICS firmware already on your phone.
Check the Triangle Away forum to ensure its working with your firmware version.
Flash Triangle Away, this will remove Yellow Triangle and reset Custom Counter to 0.
Flash official unrooted firmware using Odin, this wont increase your Custom Counter as its official. Use a firmware thats specific to your region.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Job done.
Also check my sigi for links
Thanks! This forum is full of amazing help.
So theoretically I could follow those steps then flash the stock ROM a thousand times and the flash counter would remain at 0?
If it makes you feel any better I went to Optus 3 weeks ago with a phone that wouldn't turn on with ICS for another region with root and they fixed it.
I think my USB jig cleared the counter to 0 though. I couldn't connect my phone to dl mode or anything
The app removes the triangle as well as the counter
Yeah I tried using the jig a while ago but I think I have the newer bootloader, so it didn't do anything, which was very disappointing.
I'd just hate to take it in then have them tell me to get bent because I rom'ed it.
Ok so let me know if theres a problem with my process.
I'm using ICS and the kernel is XWLP4.
There was no LP4 in Chainfires thread but I read that I could use the next closest one. So I should flash something like "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_O2U_LP3-v5.4-CWM5.zip" and then triangle away then use the Optus stock ICS?
UPDAT: I tried this method and it worked perfectly! Thanks so much to everyone who helped.
has worked like a charm for me everytime i put stock firmwares on my phone
Safest way is to flash a really old firmware and thus flashing the old bootloader. Now reset the counter with an usb jig. Done.

[Q] Trip counter

Can someone explain to me what trip counter means? Where do I see if mine is tripped or not?
It is a counter on your phone that trips if you have installed custom firmware. Sorry to say I can't tell you where to look because I don't care about mine
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Trip Counter (Binary Download Counter)
1. Power off Phone
2. Hold Volume- (Down) and Home Key and Power at same time. Let phone boot. While holding all three keys.
3. Once in download mode press Volume+ (up)
Here you can see the counter.
Coustom Binary Download: No
Or
Coustom Binary Download: Yes (2 counts)
how ever many counts you have.
To exit hold power button for about 10 seconds. Then press again to power up phone. (Or Pull Battery)
No this will not trip counter.

As far as I understand, no it doesn't work and if you try on the USA one, it could potentially brick your phone. I didn't want to take the risk so didn't use it, but I think the author himself said USA Variants not supported.
I rooted using the general root before knowing anything about the flash counter (coming from HTC, dont know the Sammy ways yet). After i found out, I finished with the Root without tripping the flash counter tutorial and it says "1" when i boot into download mode.
Since i have done the tutorial will my counter always stay at "1" or if i flash another rom or mod will it start adding up?
Im just wanting to know if i need to be careful with going flash crazy or not.
thanks.

It'll keep going up unless if it's your carrier's official rom, and to be honest, once you get "1" I don't think it matters if you have "2" or "48190238102931"

I'm no expert, but from all the reading I've done I have concluded that flashing non-Samsung content via Odin is what trips the flash counter, flashing a rom via CWM will not.

not doubting you but wanted to be sure if true for all roms and i guess maybe even carrier models? Some of the sites I read said other wise. Also, you need to raise the counter at least "1" time to get Root Access though, no?
which means we still need a reset app like the international ver. have.
..and what is max I can do ? Or does it matter if I have 500 counts? What is it for? Dees it hurt me in any kind of way?
mine says "custom binary download: yes (1 count)
I installed 2 roms (same rom just updated version)

Negative. I just rooted and installed CWM on my AT&T GS3 and my counter is still at 0. Flashing via Odin is what trips the flash counter, flashing through CWM doesn't. That being said, I'd imagine most if not all devs are going to make their roms flashable zips so we don't have to worry about the counter. I rooted via Odin but didn't trip the counter thanks to the devs who figured out a way to get around it. The thread is stickied in the AT&T dev forum.

there's no max, its just a way of voiding warranty
So we need to brick our phone good enough that they cant read the counter to get warranty replacement???
once the counter is [1] or higher, you already voided your warranty...there's really no max out or loop back to [0]

Verizon Trip Counter?

Hello all,
I am rooted and have been flashing pribably 6 different ROMs so far without issue. I've been reading threads where others have been talking about "trip counters" and the "yellow triangle". Am I missing or forgetting about something important?

They're talking about flashing unapproved .odin images that trip the flash counter you're flashing stuff with CWM or TWRP.

I'm normally not anal about this, but did you forget a period between "flash counter" and "you're" ? I don't know if you meant to put one there but I'm confused about what you're saying at any rate.
I am using TWRP only to flash ROM's. the only time I used ODIN was when I did a stock flash to the original ROM post unlocking the bootloader.

I'm not and expert on this but what he was saying was that flashing a ROM with TWRP or CWM shouldn't trip the flash counter. I have flashed several ROMs and I haven't had mine tripped yet. If you flash an unauthorized image via ODIN you will more than likely trip the counter and from all that I've read you shouldn't flash with ODIN once you're on an unlocked bootloader unless you want to go back to stock and locked
If this info is wrong please feel free to correct me.

Unless something has changed since the Galaxy S4, I'm pretty sure you can just use an app called "Triangle Away" to reset the counter. Seems to have worked on my T-Mobile S5 since flashing the DeoDexed NE5 ROM and TWRP. Someone else here might know more than I, though. So I'd get a second opinion before proceeding. (Just to be sure.)
EDIT: Just read in another thread that there is a hardware tampering system in place in this device. So there might be more to this than I thought.

Triangle away does not yet work for the s5. Yes, flashing a custom recovery will trip knox. There is no yellow exclamation point on the s5 and if you are running a custom rom them you will never notice the difference. It is a hardware feature that is now built into the phone and there is no way to disable it.
