[Q] md5 mismatch during recovery - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

so i did a backup of my stock root Rom before flashing saurom rom. and when i thought i washing issues i tried to go back and recover it, but i got an.issues saying md5 mismatch. any ideas what it could be?

Not sure but when you do a backup you should always boot it up to make sure its good before flashing anything
Sent from the only smartphone designed by Chuck Norris

I had the same issue too. I have restored from backup on my Infuse a hundred times and never had this happen. What could we be doing wrong?

Did you guys by any chance flash the modified Touchwiz launcher to gain the extra real estate? I know my MD5 showed as corrupted when I wanted to restore my backup after the revert file failed to work. In my case... browsing to /system/app then seeing and removing TouchWiz30Launcher.odex fixed my problem.

ill.give that a shot

You didn't by chance rename your backup did you? If you did take out any and all spaces

i did rename it actually

yeah im brand new. switched from being an iphone user of like 6 years to the note last week. so idk alot of this stuff. thanks!

Hey Jackson, That is exactly what I did was rename it. Do I simply take the spaces out of what I renamed or is this backup useless now?
---------- Post added at 07:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:39 PM ----------
Jackson....I went ahead and took a chance on taking out the spaces and it worked perfect. You are a saint imo!

perfect
Yeah when I saw your OP and you said 'my stock root rom' I figured you do what most of us do and name your roms to help remember them... which is a great idea but just be sure to leave out any spaces, i.e., original_stock_root_rom

can anyone give me their nandroid back up of stock rom? I need it to go back to stock..I have to return the device in few days..

[HELP] i can't root!!!! help!

See the pics attached:
I use this method
(from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034145):
"
E. Rooting for 2.3.3/2.3.4/2.3.5 (Thanks to russian forum-user with nickname may213):
1) Download attached file called upd_1.zip and copy it to your sdcard
2) Turn off your phone
3) Press POWER+HOME BUTTON
4) Select update from sdcard, select the file upd_1.zip
5) After the update completed - reboot
6) Now you have rooted S5830
"
before rooting, I've done this———“How to force install apps to SD card without ROOT!!!”, does this affect my rooting?
Try to mount/system and data then flash again.
tried, still can't. thx anyway.
Problem solved!!
I find this article "How to root Samsung Galaxy Ace on Froyo & Gingerbread
"acetips.wordpress.com/2011/09/29/root-ace-froyo-gingerbread/"
I follow the note:
"Those who are getting errors and cant root their phone , Download this file “AceGingerRoot.zip” and use it instead of “upd_1.zip”"
download the file “AceGingerRoot.zip".
and successfull!!!!
I don't know why, but again, it's successful!
I'm sorry, I thought my problem solved.
coz I saw the update completed and the superuser icon in the app drawer.
But when I try to open Titanium Backup, it says my ROM is not rooted.
Still need help!
and my phone is locked to my carrier,
does it affect the rooting?
really need help!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so frustrated!!!
Lol. I had the exact same problem! Are you intending to install cm7? Whatever I did that update pack would not root for me... I ended up flashing clockwork mod ace, a recovery just for the ace. I've heard that the regular ROM Manager can brick this phone. Then installed cm7 without having the root permission in Gingerbread. You can do it just by placing the Rom on the SD and using the install zip from sd option. You will want to make a backup before you do this. Also check if you can find your providers APN values online for setting up mobile data. Worked for me. Do I like cm7? It is good, very customizable. However, do not expect something as polished as the firmware without a bit of effort to figure out the options.

And no, being locked to a carrier does not affect rooting your phone.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA Premium App
you can try CF-root
You should also have a look at the topic on this forum "(Q) GTS5830B root?" I think it may be applicable to you. Some stuff about changing the script in the update.zip pack to match the model of your Ace.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA Premium App
yes, I got the problem exactly same as this thread""(Q) GTS5830B root?" " but I don't understand how to solve it using the method mentioned in that thread.
Actually, I'm not only just a noob, also, ace is my first smartphone.
I tried to figure out all the new words, apps, systems I had to use to get my Ace to customize as my wish.
I'll managed to solve my problem by figuring out the approach that thread mentioned. If I can't, I'll probably try CM7(another new thing to learn).
Thank you for your hint, at least now, I saw the hope out there.
I've tried these 2:
1. edit "updater-script" by changing "GT-S5830" to "GT-S5830T"(my model number), it doesn't work, aborted.
2. delete the "assert", it worked, update completed.
But,
Still,
when I try to open titanium or root uninstaller,
they all say "it is not rooted" after updating was successful.
I just don't get it. WHY?????
I tried to unroot, coz I thought maybe I can get rid of the useless superuser app got from updating "“AceGingerRoot.zip” ", and then I will give modified "update.zip" another try.
However, it's so funny that the superuser app is still there after updating unroot.zip successfully(at least that's what the screen says).
Can I recovery to the stock state by using the recovery mode? so I can get rid of all these stuff and start again!
Okay, you have EXACTLY the same problem I did. You could try SuperOnceClick. It never worked for me, but it might be worth a try before giving up. There is a good Tutorial on it here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
When that didn't work I just installed CyanogenMod-7.1-RC1Cooper-Grif_07 and moved on with my life. You can get it to look just like Gingerbread, but you will loose all your Samsung stuff, and your GPS might not be able to get a fix. Sorry...

Yes, if you made a back-up before you started. It is really easy, it just takes a few min... Without a backup you would need to download the original firmware.

When I installed I was so MAD that I was ready to smash the phone, so honestly I never backed up before installing CM7. You can go ahead and try. The worst that can happen is nothing. If you're flashing CM7 and you absolutely hate it you can always reset back to the factory ROM by downloading and installing it. HELP

I'm just wondering if anybody may have any suggestions as to what I could do to get my phone working again.
I bought my GSIII, in a slightly used condition from a shop and everything was working fine, but I didn't have to bother rooting it as it was already done.
I tried to flash Omega v19 and like an idiot I never made a note of which modem it was using before flashing.
Now I can't seem to get any signal whatsoever, I just get a circle with a line through it instead, although using some modems I can get some sort of signal but can't register on any network.
I've tried quite a few different modems, but can't seem to get any joy, I didn't realize I would need to be so exact with what modem I use, I know some can have a better signal than others, but one of them should work.
I've even tried flashing Samsung Firmware, but still the same Circle with a line through it.
I had the phone for one day and already wrecked it...
I not sure if the phone maybe a polish phone, because some polish TMobile apps and a polish GPS program, after a factory reset, but I thought any international firmware would have been fine to use....
Thanks ...John...
If it is network locked them you might need a polish t mobile SIM, or unlock it....sounds a bit dodgy to me....have you been back to the shop with it?
First thing CHECK YOUR IMEI number... If it is anything starting 00 or 000 it means your EFS folder got messed up... If your IMEI number is ok than download the app from the following link which will help you unlock the SIM... I didnt made the App. I am just sharing it... Credit goes to the creator(whoever he/she may be)...
http://db.tt/9AGfHu5g
No, I've not tried to return it to the shop yet. Im guessing he'll just say that it's my own fault. As everything was working fine until I messed about with it.
It's not a locked handset, I bought it as sim unlocked.
I think the T-Mobile apps and startup screen must install when you first set up the phone. He put a sim into the phone for me and thats the same one that I'm trying to get working now.

I'll try and check the IMEI when I get home, I'm In work at the moment.
I noticed a clear efs option in Odin, would this make my situation worse or better, i know some people have cleared a corrupted efs and then edited the nv_data.bin to fix it. Woukd this help.
Assuming the IMEI is corrupted, I did a nandroid backup and the first thing I did was try to restore that, but that didn't help. Should that of restored the efs folder.
Thanks. ....John....

Try using ks tools restore efs
Capt. Chaitanya Patel
I've checked the IMEI, and as far as I can tell everything seems ok, but it could be a different number and I wouldn't know, but at least it's not all zero's.
I tried using the GalaxSimUnlock app, but it tells me that it is unlocked, and I've tried various Sims in it just in case, but no luck.
It's really starting to baffle me now, although that's not very hard.
It works fine when manually or automatically selecting the network, it even says 'registered on network', but then when I try to dial something it says 'not registered on any network'.
Thanks ...John...

I forgot about that, I checked under the battery and the two IMEI's are different.
So it is just a question of how I can get it back. It's illegal here in the uk to change an IMEI, but would it be illegal to change it back to the original one.
Failing that could I register the new one somewhere.

Download KC-kTool app from the play store. it is free and you will be able to restore the IMEI number IF THE BACKUP EXISTS, because if you installed the OMEGA ROM than there will be the backup of the EFS folder in your internal memory card. if you cant restore than give me a call. I will explain how to restore it from the backup manually...
The ktool program wanted a efs backup in either bin or tar format, which I don't have. I new I'd probably regret doing it, but when I first realised that I couldn't get any signal I tried messing about with the apn settings, but when that didn't work I restored my backup from clockworkmod. This didn't work so I did a superwipe then tried to install Samsung firmware. So I've lost the majority of what was on the internal sdcard.
I did however, have the sense to copy my nandroid backup to my computer first, and since this was a backup of the original stock rom I don't get why it didn't solve the problem.
What I do have in the efs folder is, a nv_data.bin with today's date for the last edited timestamp, and a nv_data.bak dated 27 August. So this must be a backup of the original file, so would it be safe for me to rename, replace & reboot.
Is my IMEI in the nv_data.bin or is there a bit more to it than that.
Thanks ...John...

I ended taking the phone back to the shop I bought it from, and they fixed it overnight. I'm not really sure how they did it, because when I asked them they just said "we flashed it", but when I got it back it still had the same changed IMEI and somebody else's apps, Photo's, Messages, Google Play account, Email Accounts and even Barclay's Banking Apps.
It's like they took a CWM backup or something from someone else's phone and transferred it to my straight onto my phone.
Anyway, I factory reset it and now It's OK...

I have a temporary solution for you. if you still have the backup of the the EFS folder in your internal or external sd card than follow the following steps,
1. copy ALL the files from the EFS BACKUP FOLDER.
2. go to the root of your your phone with root explorer of ES file explorer and find the folder EFS. it should be with all the system folders like acct, config, data, dev, efs, etc so on and on.
3. now paste all the copied files in to EFS folder. tap on REPLACE THE FILES if ASKED...
4. close the app. and go to the home screen and wait for few seconds.
if your simcard have pin than it will ask the pin after few seconds and if it doesnt have any pin than it will just get the network.
good things is you have your IMEI number restored and can use the phone like regularly. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.
bad thing is NEVER LET YOUR PHONE SWITCH OFF. If it will switch off than you will have to follow all the steps again... annoying but works... let me know the progress buddy... best of luck...
Sorry I didn't respond earlier, I've only just seen your post.
I'd had the Guy in the shop repair the phone once, and it seemed to work ok, although I still had the changed IMEI. Then I tried to flash an official Samsung Firmware from the SamMobile site and the same thing happened again. Althought I had backed up the efs data this time around, trying to restore from this didn't seem to work. I thought I would be able to restore the new IMEI, but I guess restoring corrupted data is only marginally better than not restoring at all.
I Brought it back and luckily they gave me my money back. So I bought a brand new one instead from O2.
Now I'm a bit nervous about trying to flash it again. Any ideas as to what might causes this problem (bad practice, etc)..
Is it safer to unlock my device with an unlock code or GalaxSimUnlock. (Seems obvious, but I guess a bad unlock code could be just as damaging).
Is it safer to flash through Odin or CWM.
Is there anything else I should take into account besides doing a nandroid backup and an efs backup.
Thanks ...John...

Sorry, I didn't respond earlier, I've been busy with work, and any spare time has been filled with trying to repair a Desire HD for someone (Broken Screen, Digitizer and Trying to root and Debrand it with a v2.00.029. HBoot).
Anyway, I've rooted the phone using Chainfire's CF-root kernel, made a nandroid backup, and I'm trying to make as many efs backups as I possibly can (taking no chances ).
I've made one using busybox to tar the efs directory (although I don't think this will work).
I've made one using EFSPro.
I've use the HC-KTool program that you recommended.
I've also used the GalaxSim Unlock app to unlock & backup the efs data.
Now I was just just wondering how can I verify these backups, because something has happened that has made me question the validity of all my backups.
I tried the built in 'reboot nvbackup' method and the phone rebooted, but I didn't see anything happen. As far as I was aware you're supposed to see some blue writing as it copies the data.
Anyway, no big deal and I got on with what I was doing.
I then tried to use the Synergy Rom backup, where it said 'Backing up EFS if unlocked' and 'Not Unlocked Skipping Backup'.
Any ideas what this means, and how do I get and unlocked efs folder/partition.
An if Synergy can't back it up, how can I be sure the others are ok, too.. I know I'm probably being a bit over cautious this time round, but I don't want to be at the point where I need to use them to find out they are no good.
Thanks ...John...

Your EFS backup should be in two formats depends on the application used.
some apps use TAR.GZ and some use .IMG.
There is one way to confirm the data of EFS backup.
Go to HC-KTools>backup EFS to /sdcard/efs.img
when complete it will ask to SWITCH TO EFS BACKUP CHECK. tap on YES and than on the next screen tap on RUN CHECK.
The result should be last line saying 100% (0 BYTES DIFFER)

Titanium/Custom ROMs Question

Hey I was wondering if any titanium backups that I make on my sd-card are able to be restored on any custom ROM or not. For example I'm using Peetrs ROM right now. Could I back up app/system data, flash a different ROM, and then restore and regain everything I had? I know this may be a dumb question but I'm a novice when it come to swapping between ROMs.
I don't imagine it'll do any harm. You'd only need root permission which you should have already. Also you are not overwriting the kernel or anything hardware related, and as long as the backups coincide with the version of android you're using you should be fine. Just do a nandroid backup if anything.

Restoring apps and data shouldn't hurt anything. Someone else may chime in, but restoring "system apps" could possibly interfere. I never had a problem when restoring when upgrading versions of the same ROM (i.e. v19 to v20 of "peetr_'s)

Well I made the update from Peetr_s v19 to 20 using the original method in question without any problems. But I guess I meant that maybe since different roms use different launchers there may somehow a confliction there.. I suppose since I have the backups flashing whatever I want shouldnt hurt since I can always revert back to what I have right?
Exactly. The worst that could happen is a repeated force close if something. And if you have a backup (CWM or TWRP), restoring would make it as if it never happened

[Q] impossible to restore from nandroid backup?

Excuse me if I'm being a total noob here, but I'm trying to learn!
I had an ICS rom on my phone for ages and it was great but i decided to upgrade to cm10 as i wanted to test out jelly bean. Unfortunately i did the install wrong and broke the phones wifi but i know why and i can fix that. What i need to do is restore from my original nandroid backup.
Jellybean seems to have everything stored in a 0 folder. I understand why, because of user profiles but, i assume where ive tried to reinstall the rom a few times, now i have four 0 folders inside each other and have absolutely no idea how to fix it. And when I try to do a nandroid restore its looking for the backup in the /data folder and although im rooted no file explorer will let me copy files into it. I've tried everything including android commander but the only thing that will even let me view files in the /data folder is the file explorer that comes with cm10 and it won't let me copy any files into it.
So basically, is there any way I can restore from my nandroid backup so I can fix the WiFi and try cm10 again?
Thanks in advance. Sorry for being noobish!
Cm10 is very unstable and always having pribkems with either Wifi, Data, or Bluetooth so dont worry about that.
My advice is to Flash back to Stock Official Firmware through Odin on your PC and then root it again.
Then once rooted you will be to start flashing other Jellybean Roms.
There is a large selection of Jellybean Roms on here mate.
Hope this helps

A nandroid is kinda like making an image of a PC using Ghost (if that helps at all).
You should make a nandroid when:
- You love your build/configuration
- You getting ready to flash a new ROM
- You gonna do anything unfamiliar
It is your way back to a working and configured device.
Ex...
I want to flash romX. Boot into recovery, make a nandroid. Do my wipes. Flash romX. Reboot. Play with new from. Find out I hate romX or its missing a feature I love. Fine. Reboot into recovery restore my nandroid. I am now back where I started...with my phone as it was before I started.
Ti (titanium backup) is a great tool. Yes, it's confusing.
1) buy the pro version...it's worth it
2) don't restore system apps (someone else can perhaps correct me or explain this one)
3) if you move from one aosp rom to another you can restore your user apps and data...this can save you a lot of time.
Oh yeah....ALWAYS keep a good nandroid copy on your computer. If your really frell things up and wipe everything or if the files get corrupt...you will be happy you have it.
Don't feel bad, there has been some weird twist and turns on the dev of this device. It was much easier on my old EVO4G. THE LGOG has confused me several times as well.
Good luck.
