Games constantly freezing - Motorola Droid RAZR

Running stock 2.3.6 rooted, I'll be playing Galcon, Froad, Fruit Ninja, etc. it will randomly freeze for 4-7 seconds, sometimes even boot me back to the title menu.. Is anyone else experiencing this & is there a fix?

I know EXACTLY what you're experiencing. I HATED when that used to happen to me...
A fix that I tried and currently still use, is to use CPU Master (or I guess any other app that let's you set your CPU speed and over/under clock)
I usually set it to min. 1000mhz and max. 1200mhz, and voila, problem solved
Tell me if it works for you!

that's still some pretty massive overclocking, running your CPU so high all the time will eventually eat up a lot of battery.
I think it's a problem with the phone's kernel not being very well optimized. Or.. maybe it's the developers who haven't optimized their games for dual cores, idk

LOL I'm aware that is really high. But don't worry, I almost always set it to min. 300mhz to a max of 800 mhz for average use. I only overclock for the rare occasion of games, which I have gotten a little tired of xD

had the same problem. for me i just thought about, why they are freezing. then i recognized that every time the razr's cpu changed it's speed, there's some freezing... freezing time ssems to be long or short, don't know exactly why this happens...
fruit ninja should be playable unfreezed with speeds like 800MHz or even 600MHz... tested only with 800...
greetings

Odd.. Fruit ninja used irritate the **** out of me for freezing on 2.3.5.. But no longer freezes on 2.3.6

This fixed the freezing in Fruit Ninja for me on Axiom AOKP b15 ICS Rom. Except I set MIN to 800 mhz.

[Q] How hot is too hot?

I installed the webtop over hdmi mod on my Atrix and while testing it out, it got very warm in my hand. I opened the setcpu app and noticed that while overclocked to 1.3GHz, the CPU was running at 75C! I lowered it back down to the stock 1GHz and the temp slowly went down and settled at 63C.
It seems that while in webtop mode, the CPU is taxed at 100% all the time so I'm wondering if it's safe to stay overclocked when using webtop.
Everyone has different opinions of what is too hot around here.
IMO the cooler the better. IMI No Atrix should have a temp above 60c and I'm not even comfortable with above 50c either...
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
I have experienced the same problem and worried that something may fry.... I have had mine overclocked at 1.45 using debian linux and all of a suddent he phone freezes and restarts.... Since it did it to me the second time I have kept my phone at 1Ghz... I am new at this so please don't beat me up too bad for being a noob... Just want to see if maybe undervolting it a little might help or hurt it?
Thanks in advance
Here are some tips I can offer
1.Try re-flashing your custom kernel and see if that fixes the web-top thing and over heating
Whenever the phone is plugged to the web-top it will naturally overheat so it's kinda expected remember now it's gotta work harder since its displaying on lap-dock or TV,but if you can cook an egg on it it might be too hot...lol
2.Set profile for temperature on setcpu so this way once you reach for example 100F your phone will clock down a little and so it might help the heat issue. You can set even more than one temp profile so this way when it reaches 96 it goes down a little then when it reaches 100 it will clock down a little more and such.
3.If that doesn't help, which in my situation it did.Flash a different kernel mayb it's just the one you're using that is causing funny stuff to happen.
Edit: not sure but i think undervolting helps battery but causes more heat,I myself don't undervolt I just created litterally a bunch of setcpu profiles for battery level, screen off, incall, charging, temp, and time and I'm getting 13 hour days at 1.3Ghz and temp profiles have been helping by clocking down when it's too hot therefore saving battery and drastic overheating.I dontlike my phone going anything over 104F it gets me paranoid, but that's just me.
I tried reflashing the kernel but it didn't change anything. I'm using Faux's 1.3GHz overclock kernel for Gingerbread (2.6.32.9). Is there something else I should be using?

Do what sktrix said in rest of his post.
I use the stopgap 1.0GHz kernel, and UV does lower temperatures. I would definitely try UV'ing a wee bit. You don't need to go crazy. I am using the following with great results for both temp and battery life:
-50
-50
-75
-75
-75
-100
-100
My setcpu profile clocks it back if I reach 60C, (I idle in the low to mid 30's). Under heavy load I reach around 52C max which is quite acceptable.
Now, granted I am not using Webtop, but the end result for UV should be the same. Lower temps and better battery life. You may also want to try just using 1.0GHz when on Webtop. The phone has more than enough power at this clock speed.
There is a bug with faux's kernel that causes the webtop to clock the phone at max speeds until restart.

I know I'm straying from my correct forums here, however I have an LG Optimus 2X which like the Atrix, is a Tegra 2 CPU.
Our phones get VERY hot, I have had my CPU up to 86C before I decided to back off the stress test. CPUs are very good at handling high temperatures, and IMO you will see no ill effects from doing so, I am unsure of whether or not the Tegra 2 has thermal throttling/shut down, but in my experience they should be fine to around 80C.
The only issue I can forsee is the battery, batteries HATE high temperatures and it is awful for their life span, this is why your laptop batteries turn to crap after 1-2 years, even if low charge cycles, because they are always hot.
I would not be concerned about anything in the 70C realm, at all.

Experienced this countless times. More with the latest 1.45Ghz, but it did happen on the previous release. When I dopped the mhz with setcpu, it wont scale but stay at max cpu. It even did it a few times without using the webtop.

So which overclocked kernel is best for webtop? I too have noticed where the CPU hangs at 100% at 1.45Ghz for a while when disconnected but it is always there when im in webtop mode.... How is Faux 1.3Ghz kernel with webtop?

It will still hang at 1.3ghz, though it's a known bug. I just stick with the 1.0 enhanced, there's no noticeable real-world difference from going over 1.0ghz anyway, it's just a benchmark gimmick. Right now, the software that's out there is optimized to run on existing hardware w/o overclocks. I've run Shadowgun at 1.45ghz and didn't see any difference over the 1.0 enhanced.
Now, if we were trying to run games that were coded specifically or faster-paced chipsets then we'd need overclocking to catch up much like you would in the PC arena. That, however, is not happening in the cell phone market just yet.

Read the history at the following:

You will see a lot more optimization than just upping the clock speed. One of the reasons the 1.0GHz kernel works much better than the stock kernel. Also, the ability to undervolt saving battery life.
IMO there is no need for 1.3GHz or 1.45GHz in everyday use of a phone. The only benefit is for OC'ing bragging rights. Until we can control phone temperatures better, it's pointless to risk the substantial heat increase on ALL internal components for extended periods of time which results from much increased CPU temperatures.

I see... guess that explains why the phone doesn't really feel any faster when it's overclocked. I'll flash the 1GHz kernel then.
Thanks for the info.
Not sure if this is the same with phones but normally a CPU should stay at 40C idle and 50C load. Maximum would be 60C while benching or something.
If it goes above that I would definitely underclock/undervolt.

[Q] my note blacked out

so...my note is rooted with OC and on CWM beta 3. i even have flashed a battery percentage status bar mod (after many tries and lots of FC's issues) i finally got everything stable on a stock rom oc'd at 1.8 and this thing was sick dude...i mean so fast and big and bright and perfect...no problems except for 1...was getting random reboots...3 a couple days ago while using boat browser every mtime so uninstalled and started using dolphin. worked great until 1 rando reboot today while on dolphin browser...i figure no big deal it happens when you tweak your phone...but then all of a sudden it did something different just now it did...it just randomly rebooted while toggling wifi on except after it booted back up i couldn't unlock the screen or get into the launcher and the screen went black and unresposive. power button did nothing even holding it down...i pulled the battery out and then back in and restart and phoone booted up normally. clear as a bell and lightning fast...
so i just dialed down the oc to 1700...hope it's all good though...can't think why it would do this...
thanks?
Your phone can't handle the 1.8 ghz overclock.
When overclocking, no 2 chipsets will perform the same. Some will be able to overclock to 1.8 and some will not.

You won't brick by overclocking. If you run it at an unstable clockspeed for your phone, you'll just be getting constant reboots.
1782 mhz should be fine. Try benchmarking your phone using Quadrant and Antutu from the market to stress test your phone at that new CPU speed.

yup, sounds like classic too-overclocked symptoms to me. Back it down a notch like you have already done and try again...

at&t note runs on one processor?!

Ok so im rooted and overclocked and was using setcpu then decided i wanna try something different so i tried system tuner! When i checked the cpu it said that one of the processors are off line! Then i pressed the info button and sure enough it says only reading one! So i went through the settings and found force both cores online!
Since then i have no lag and virtually no checkerboarding on the web! Anyway i was just wondering if im the only one who noticed this and maybe it could help those who say that they are still getting lag on they're roms using dag's kernel!
Also i hope devs will notice this thread since i can't post there yet and take advantage of this how ever they can!
Now don't quote me on this but most likely the second core only turns on for processor intensive activities such as high graphics games or multiple programs running at once. I do find it hard to believe that it would be totally disabled. Most likely this is done to conserve battery.

Okay if this really is the case I could also see at&t disabling the second core totally to save battery because of lte but i guess it will take a dev that has more experience with how qualcomm's multicore cpus work in android. report back with differences in battery life like how much faster does it drain now that both cores are forced on.
if you want both cores on click on boot settings and enable force all cpus online. that heats up your phone and eats more battery though+I do not see any benefits doing that.

1836 max
192 min
Governer
Smartassv2
Both cores pushing
Screen off
192 max
In call
384 max
Tomorrow ill post some pics of battery life usage!
And my phone doesn't get any hotter than normal not even while using my navi! Mostly it just gives no lag and better rendering in the browser/maps/etc!!
I was under the impression that Gingerbread didn't fully utilize multiple cores. Need HC or ICS...

Same, but having a better processor helps. Like exynos. I bet once we update to ics if it ever happens, the differences will be only minor between processors, as it runs so nice.

Not entirely true.. the Galaxy Nexus has a kernel governor that turns one core off when the SCREEN IS OFF, but not when the phone is being used. Multiple kernel creators have since implemented this into their kernels. It is called "hot plugging" and it just turns CPU 1 offline when the screen is off and turns it back on when the screen is on

Just checked mine, rooted and OC with DaG's 0.1 version (first version). When I looked, it said the second CPU was offline. Changed it to online, we'll see how that impacts battery life.
How much of an advantage is smartassv2 anyway?
I just tried this with system tuner and both cpus were working but wone was of and on and zero was always on.
I am running stock rooted. If you just sit yhere and watch it you will see tje sevond core fires and shuts down alot.

I guess jury is still out or is this a YMMV kind of thing?

As far as I know yes you must have super user permission to alter such system activities
I don't know why everyone is in such a rush to force the second core online, it turns on and off when it needs to.

CPU locked at 800Mhz during 3d Applications

I have noticed that whenever i play heavy 3d games, my cpu only runs at 800 mhz..even though the scaling is from 200-1200 mhz. First i thought it was a problem with a specific game(The dark knight rises), but now i tried Mass effect infiltrator too..same thing happens..
I wouldnt have bothered too much but i get some fps drops..i expect 'smooth as a butter' experience from S2..which i aint getting..while playing 3d games..
Some one might argue that maybe the game requires only 800 mhz to run..but i seriously doubt it..in 3d applications(heavy) , the processor should be used at higher frequencies. Also, i tried scaling my cpu from 1000-1200 mhz, but still while playing games, the cpu goes back to 800 mhz lol..
Please someone explain this and also Try it on your device..do u notice the same results while playing a heavy 3d game?
I tried running stock kernel as well as siyah 3.3.2. getting same results on both.. tried different governers too..but same thing
I am on neatlite rom currently..could it be the rom thats the culprit?
Please someone do help me, i am getting frustrated with my S2 lol..
thanks

for ur 'Smooth as Butter' experience with 3d gaming, i would suggest u to flash a stock official ICS firmware and then see for the same
It would be really great if anyone could just verify it on their device too? Just run some good heavy 3d game..and look at the cpu usage..would be a lot appreciated

It could be due to smooth scaling setting bug from earlier siyah kernel, or throttling due to cpu temperature.
Try flash the latest siyah kernel and set smooth scaling level to 1200mhz.
i have set smooth scaling to 1200 mhz.. and yeh i guess it could be the throtling issue but why is it happening?
I mean i can run a 2d game like mutant roadkill on 1200mhz but when i try to run heavy 3d games..they just run at 800 mhz..
I did read bout this throttling issue to 800mhz but what can i do to avoid it? The phone doesnt get too hot either though..

wrong thread and wrong forum my friend this is for s2
also, perhaps you should use setCPU to check some clock settings
I just tried infiltrator, and my device uses highest 1200mhz normally, so i guess it must be kernel/rom related. I'm running rr 2.6.1 with latest dorimanx 5.67 kernel. It might be something about neat rom that prevents your device from using max clock, since neat rom is very battery friendly, but i'm not sure... would be nice if someone using the same rom as you could try and confirm.

my cpu is fail?? cpuset cant pass the 1600mhz...

htc one x+ stock 4.1.1 - 1.16.401.6

after all my lags ... tryd as u recommended to use cpu set and put my device on maximum cpu to try gaming...
the game play better in 20% but still have some lags (dead trigger)
and my cpu cant push to 1700mhz...
i did min 1700 and max 1700 on max proff... and cpu clock stick to 1600mhz...
maby i got failuer on cpu??
i did notice before that my battry draind very fast....
and battry and camera area get overheat very fast in games... !!overheat!!!! means that u almost cant move ur hands on the tuch cuz its make them stikky
and if i go to stteings>developer options >show cpu usege... i can see only 3 cores working and not 4.. as i shueld see...

lol. You have me a nice little laugh.
DON'T put your phone at min 1700MHz. You will basically fry out the phone.
Also, why would you be going passed 1700MHz? The phone has a 1.7GHz processor. 1.7GHz = 1700MHz.
IF you want to go passed 1700MHz, you have to wait for a custom kernel that supports overclocking. Until then, you will not go passed the factory speed of 1700MHz.
MAKE SURE TO SET THE MIN BACK TO IT WAS!!! anything over 434 is practically useless. It'll just drain your battery, overheat the phone and fry your phone out, especially when min and max is at 1700MHz!
Oh yeah. If you use SetCPU, you have to choose "Set on Boot". But make sure you give it the right settings or your phone will bootloop.
the point is that i dont try to pass the 1700... but i cant reach him..... cant pass the 1600.... im not try to oc it...
its gets overheat with or without the cpuset ... and was like this from the moment i did unbox the phone...same as for the lags... (eaven in homescreen)
the battrey drain out eaven on low usege games... games that i did play on my iphone 3gs for 4-5 houers in and still had 30% left now drain my battry in 2-3 houers...
so much issues with stock normal phone somthing maby worng here dont u think?
and i bet for the hadware ... and not the software
for gaming first try the geming boost app (use search and you'll find it) this should fix most of your problems.
and further: don't set your CPU at constant maximum, this will eat your battery for breakfast.
keep the min/max values stock and if you still have lags in gaming you could try other governors with this app. but as i said... first try the gaming boost app, that really should do the trick
So you are saying your phone wont run at 1600mhz. How are you testing this? please explain in detail what software you are using and what test etc. I agree with the gaming booster app for gaming issue but it seems you are having greater issues. a 1700mhz phone should run at 1600mhz. We'll help you figure it out just need a little more info.

tested using cpuset... if i try to push it to 1700 he dosnt pass the 1600mhz just capped there....
100mhz diffrent is huge!!! not beacuse of the numbers... just beacuse its pointed about heavy issue... with electric or volt's failur or maby eaven failur cpu product
cpusets gets me 15% better gaming but still lag and somthims shatter
with game boost
almost the same ... a little bit smoother... but still dead trigger lag alot... and after 10min of gameplay its getting hot and the fps hard drop almost to slowmotion ...
shadowgun working good ...
gta 3 1.3 tegra moded work so bad and laggy still
dead trigger still lags
beach buggy blitz lags too (alot after 10min of gameplay)
The phone only goes up to 1.7ghz in single core mode in quad core the max is 1.6 GHz that's why it won't go past

Are you twelve and using a broken blackberry to type your messages? I hope you fry your phone and learn to use proper language next to me you spout off at the mouth. I'm sure your grandfather and "girlfriend" are very proud of your last statement.
Learn your hardware first and don't compare any tegra device to an iPhone 3Gs ever again. My brain almost exploded with the lack of undestandingn of the hardware on your part.
