I've noticed that other peoples LTE Galaxy notes have different names under the build.prop files, notably that Rogers models identify as SGH-i717R while Bell Canada Models are SGH-i717M, I have also noticed that this seems to be affecting app compatibility on the marketplace and other places.
For example The King of Fighters that was released today is showing incomaptible with some peoples LTE notes on other carriers however is showing compatible with my Bell note, but on the flipside I am still having to change my build.prop when installing gameloft games to avoid incompatible messages when downloading additional game data.
Is this common with other android handsets as well? this is only my second Android phone but the first one I've been comfortable enough to mess around with root on.
EDIT: meant for this go go in general.

I am just getting into playing with my Tilt2 and Android so this may be common knowledge but I hadn't been following the threads and didn't see it in any searches.....
What is the significance of the random symbols after the Tmobile on the lock screen? Like it starts out as a Tmobile#@ and then later is a Tmobile (0 and one it even said Voicestream.
Voicestream was bought out by Tmobile in the 1990s wasnt it? Is this something in the Android port or something in the tower signal around here?
I am running a Tmobile sim in my Tilt2 if that makes any difference.
It's based on what the tower reports. So whatever the tower is set to, will show on your phone.
I'm guessing carriers just lock the name. I know on the new RIL, CDMA users have to use this eri.xml file which allows us to statically set the carrier name. Perhaps you can do the same on GSM, if it's really that big of a deal.
Seems like an incredibly minor issue.
Only CDMA uses the eri.xml file.
The XDAndroid RIL just reports the name that the tower sent. The proprietary HTC RIL avoids this crap by having a table of operator names hardcoded in. Not sure that's a worthwhile approach, but I guess it avoids end user confusion.

it is minor, just curious.
since this section is the only option for android under the Rhodium section I thought I would ask here.
Is there another section on xda I should be following as well? I really have enjoyed playing with the android from sd card setup and check this section several times a day.
If you're running Android on a Rhodium, this is the place to be.
As stated above - it's expected behavior.
I see stuff like:
ATT0
ATT8
ATTD
ATTA
Cingular
(Tilt2 with AT&T SIM).
As mentioned above - most native Android devices have databases in their RILs that take these names and remap them for user display. It's the main reason why the HTC RIL on native Android devices is HUGE compared to ours.
I am in possession of both bell atrix and ATT atrix. I have to sell one and keep one but I cannot decide which one?
I like to have root access and play with roms. I have a lapdock as well.
what is your suggestion? which one should I keep?
You might be most qualified to answer this question since you have both phones. Maybe run quadrant on each.? Maybe Linpack too? And definately a speed test. You kind of have me wondering now if there is a substancial difference between the two phones. From reading around the forum it does appear the att version is recieving more attention.
Initially I would've said AT&T hands down..but now i'm not so sure. Since Seven's been able to get the Bell Atrix so that we can install At&T pseudo roms and themes..with the Bell atrix you're going to be more open to updates (from international carriers)..and thus more opportunity for potential updates.
Any bootloader bypass will most likely come from the At&t version however..so it makes it a tough call (although i'm sure once it's bypassed on AT&t's version..it won't be too long before it's applicable to the Bell/International versions)
as of now, I would stick with the AT&T version
I know that the bell atrix doesn't have sideloading disabled. i heard that this was an issue with the att one. Also, I'm not sure about the hsdpa+ speeds being blocked, I would check into that.
As suggested I ran Quadrant on both phones. some background about the phones:
1. ATT
original image, no mods, no theme, unlocked rooted, my primary phone
score 2652
2. BELL
modded phone using bell_deodex_v8, unlocked rooted
score 2803
I feel that the mod on BELL phone and/or ATT having more apps on it has to do with the difference in score.
---------------------------------------------
As for side rolling it is possible to open it on ATT if you have root.

Ohh yeah most Roms add that feature to your device with my setup I have sideloading enabled. Im not familiar with bell so I can't have say on your OP but hope this helps some

Not to be cynical, but why do you have both and what carrier are you on? And what country? The AT&T seems to get most of the attention here, as well as Motorola's updates tend to arrive in the USA first, but it mostly depends on your preference.
Hey guys,
I have a pretty unique problem and im not sure there even is a solution, but here goes.
The story is that I had been living in Canada for the last 7 months or so and bought myself a shiny new Desire 601 from Virgin Mobile (its a zara_ul). Since then, I have managed to brick it hardcore style, but i was able to ressurect it after 4 months of fruitless attempts through various odd files, sheer dumb luck, and the RUU from mrplowdans google drive (super props by the way, you saved my phone good sir!). I had to SuperCID the phone in order for the RUU to stick.
So it goes without saying that im now running the Telus version of KK (i updated through the usual OTA once i had returned it to stock 4.2.2) on a VM phone. All good, no issues there. Ive since returned home to Australia, unlocked the phone so it works with an Australian carrier, also all good. Im able to make calls and send texts no issue.
My problem is with mobile data. It seems to be having an issue connecting to my carriers 3g/4g. Initially, there was nothing at all, just the bars in the notification bar telling me that i had a good connection to cellular. No little superscript 3G though, and in settings, although mobile data is 'On', it is showing connection failed. Adding a custom APN appeared to work slightly, the 3G appeared in the notification bar and in settings, mobile data was shown to be 'connected', but still no dice when i try to connect to the web or download an app.
Now i vaguely understand the principles involved here, I get that North american carriers use a different radio frequency to, say, Europe, and that differs again to Australia. My question is, is it on the software side? Would it be possible to find an Australian Radio.img for a desire 601 (i dont even know if they sell them here), flash it, and all will be fine and dandy? Or is it the physical antenna inside the phone that is set to receive only a certain frequency? Im not expecting someone to go and find me a working file or anything, i know most of you live in Canada anyway, but im looking for someone with a greater knowledge of these things to find a theoretical fix.
I know I rant a lot, but in the scheme of things im willing to let this problem slide considering i only just un-bricked it a few days ago AND managed to root 4.4.2 (a significant achievement given my non-existent knowledge of android), but it is a nuicance and if theres something simple i can do of course i will.
Thanks in advance for any help <3
EDIT: Ive since done some googling and discovered that they do sell these phones in Australia, and that the Network specs for it and the canadian model that i have are almost identical, many of the frequencies are the same on both. Leads me to assume that its software sided, the telus radio.img is telling the phone to not see non-canadian frequencies.
I got a US TMo version in order to get the newer US frequencies on a rootable phone - especially Band 71. The 5G was a bonus.
However, there are so many variations of "7" s, that the development is scattered because much of it will only work on some of the phones. Besides maybe never seeing TWRP on mine, there is so little ROM development that will never come close to that on Samsungs like my S9+ . I got spoiled by that variety, and also how straight forward and relative easy it was to be a user compared to here.
If a rootable Samsung device with the US TMo frequencies shows up down the road, this one will appear immediately on eBay.
I grabbed this phone (free) from Metro about 7 months ago. I was able to use their app to "unlock" the phone after 6 months. I'm unclear about what the official "unlock" will actually allow me to do with the phone. I haven't bothered to try to load a ROM or even root it yet--is this possible? The toggle to unlock the bootloader now seems to work, but I haven't bothered (yet). FWIW, I've rooted all my Nexus, Pixel, and OnePlus devices for the past decade (as well as loaded ROMs), but this is the first phone I've purchased that was carrier locked and I don't know what all that entailed. I honestly don't even know if the Metro variant is the same (as in bands, etc.) as the vanilla North American version or not. Hell, I don't even know what other carriers it might work with. I know I sound like an idiot newbie, and I guess I am with this phone. I've actually google'd quite a bit, but I just can't find much information regarding the Metro version of the phone.
Erm... what do you WANT to do with it?
Backup gets easier as root. Some don't care and real-time stream to the cloud.
Some are paranoid of what certain large companies *cough* Google *cough* might install on your phone in the middle of the night without telling you... unlocked bootloader lets you go to an OS build from AOSP or its ilk that allow you to see source code (if you are really, really, bored enough to check it all).
Some want to kill bloat (rather than just disable it).
Some may want to keep their phones for well after they are supported officially, with an OS like Lineage, or eOS (this not so much for Nord with a fixed battery, although I suppose you can replace it if you are determined enough).
Likewise, I have old phones I've turned into MP3 players for the kids- strip all the "phone" stuff and prevent connections to Internet/cell (eliminates the security threat of an old OS) and simply sideload AIMP, VLC, or whatever your favorite player is.
GSMArena has a very easily navigable feature list, that will show for some phones the different bands each supports- and you can compare to what your preferred carrier uses. USUALLY - but not always- there is an "international" version and a "US" Version. Verizon sometimes gets their own model with/for CDMA bands, but most support all the GSM Carriers and their resellers. If you are sim unlocked, you should be able to use them on any carrier, YMMV.
T-Mobile and Metro usually don't screw around with the cellular bands of the phones they sell, so the Metro/T-Mobile N10 does support the same bands as the factory unlocked version.
And you can start off by flashing the unbranded firmware onto the phone if you don't want the Metro junk and boot animation.
