Okay so i've Noticed that recently on ics roms that when web browsing or playing games my neo gets really hot. I expected this as it has a lot to process but today whilst web browsing it got so hot that i couldent hold it anymore and it started making a burning smell. (this is without overclock min: 242 Max: 1024) i super quickly took out the battery and left it outside for a bit and it seems okay now but i was woundering why it keeps getting so hot on ics roms, as i dosent over heat on gingbread even with over clock!
Is it to do with Hardware Acceleration?
Same issue here although it never reached the burning smell! . Does any1 know the reason?

Burning smell is not a good sign, suggest you to move back to gingerbread as a precaution mate.
>>Is it to do with Hardware Acceleration?
can be,without debugging much cannot be told I guess.

Glad it's not just me then, Yeah the burning smell was after a few hours of browsing and playing fruit ninja.
me too annoying when your in the middle of somthing then your neo heats like theres no tommorrow =.=
I tried turning off "force gpu rendering" but still same heat ??? im very confuzzled.
same here, and i did a quick remove and back to .62
Neo gets Really Hot when playing games and surfing internet
The heat is too much that My hand can't stand it :'(
this is very unpleasant and really annoying.
Each time I play a game I have to take of the cover and its kinda help somehow but still it gets too much hotter.
most of the time its temperature raise more than 40 C*
any solution for this problem?
After 40-50 minutes in Modern Combat 3 multiplayer,my phone was very hot,but i think its normal, other games, programs make the phone only a little hot....
You mentioned "overclocking" ... and that's the most likely cause of overheating right there ... in your place i'd try to set the clocks back to factory defaults and use the phone then, i'm using Neo MT15i(currently with Cyanogen mod 7.2.0 RC1) and never had overheating issues

I get the same heat with underclocking @800mhz
and i dont get heat on gingerbread, only ics. in fact i overclock without heat on stock gingerbread using nightelf kernel.
Have the same problem with ka09 + pwa ics kernel 1.0 .Neo is abnormally hot compared to cm7.2 109 + nightelf lite 3.3.Could it be because the rom as a whole s still in beta stage ? And to clarify im not using oc just stock speeds.

This seems too big and too common of a problem for sony to leave. im sure it wont be happening in final ics release.
I hope that its only a nasty bug in the beta rom .The strange thing is that not many have noticed it so im wondering if it apperas only to some devices. Btw the ics roms cant be compared with the gb ones .Its like the day and night
Heating of smartphone is normal, especially when you oc your cpu...
When I'm playing eg. mc3, 9mm or gta3 with [email protected],4GHz after tens of minutes my phone is warm, but not really hot.

Yes i know but the thing is even with the oc 1.4 on cm7.2 rom it doesnt heat as much as the 1024mhz on ics.Anyway i hope its fixed inthe final version .
playing heavy games will no doubt heat ur phone...i think it is the beta rom bug...also...i have noticed that when i browse internet in 3G mode...the phone really heats up if it is not receiving good signal strength...mine heats up even on stock rom without OC.
i got heat on gb rom too ( @1024mhz max) playing nova 2 D:

SOLVED
SOLVED: (i think)
been doing some research into kernel governors and found out that the current "ondemmad" governor has a really fast ram up to high clock speeds. Whereas governors such as Smartass have a slow ramp up.
I believe this is the cause of our heat problems as when using Night elfs kernel with smartassv2 governor i played 3 hours of games (nova 2, fruit ninja, defender II) and neo got warm but not hot atal.
I also check cpu spy and despite the different governor the both reached speeds above 800Mhz.
SO i guess the fast ramp up in the ondemmand governor cause heat then?
So why not test with governors that have slow ramp up and tell me if heat gone
In gb roms with fxp kernel ,clocked to 1024 with ondemand when playing heavy games like e.warriors the phone get a little warm but cant say too hot.The problem is that in ics rom it gets warm just by having the display on (ondemand,1024 speed). When i will flash again a beta ics i will post that if changing to smartass has an effect in temp.

Hi all, running lite'ning rom 1.4 and just played order and chaos for 5 minutes and the phone became too hot to touch! Surely this shouldn't be right, i mean what the hell! Anyone else have this?

Actually yes, many people have this. It's the CPU overheating.Beware,it doesn't get hotter than other CPUs on the market, but heat disipation on the GS2 is minimal as the phone is so thin.
The only thing you can try is lowering the CPU clock to 1000Mhz or even 800Mhz when gaming. You can even boost your GPU to 400Mhz up from 267Mhz and don't overheat then. There will also be no performance hit as games run mainly on the GPU and two cores running at 1GHz are more than enough to handle the background.
I havent noticed the phone getting super hot as some people have noted. I do notice that it does get a lot hotter if its plugged in and charging while playing a game. Are you by chance charging while playing? If so, I'd try and play while not charging to see if it gets really hot still.
No this isnt while charging and it literally was 5 minutes of playing! How do I change the cpu and gpu speeds safetly?
it also depends on the game itself, many of them are just poorly programmed
to your question: setcpu is the app.

I dont have an SGS2 yet but your statement has a total flaw, if games mainly use the GPU then there should be zero need to underclock the CPU.

Have you ever seen anything running on the GPU ONLY?What I mean is that the GPU processes the graphics, which are important when playing a game. The CPU takes on other tasks, like opponent's AI(artificial intelligence),background and foreground code running and many other things.Sound maybe? All these things keep the CPU running at 100% for no reason.Lower the clock and voila!
Check first before you try to say I'm wrong next time.I don't usually say bullsh!t with such things.
Please help..I am really getting hopless and disappointed at this phone..I am using lite'ning rom and before that the original rom i am still experiencing extreme overheating when playing games like Asphalt, What am I supposed to do what's wrong?
i'd really appreciate if someone could help.
Are you charging at the same time?
What is the surrounding air temp?
Are you overclocking?
Have you tried a different kernel?
Have you tried another battery?
I would expect it to get quite hot playing games like that for an extensive time,.....
How long?
What is your actual battery temp?

Where did you get ashphalt from? the reason i ask is because i think i saw it in the samsung apps store as S1 only.
And how hot is it actually getting?
Are you charging while playing?
Thank you all for your concern. I am not charging. Original battery with temp around 39'c. No change to the rom (lite'ning). Will changing the kernel resolve the problem? Games are all from Gameloft fir GS2. The phone gets really hot that I can not hold it!!!!
Isn't Asphalt just one of those games that doesnt fully support the dual-core cpu? I think it is the same problem with Gangstar:Miami Vacation. The game runs both cores at 100% which makes your SGS2 VERY hot.
I'd advice not to play any of those games, that are not updated for dual-core CPUs
I had the same problem mate with lite'ning/stock rom 2.3.3. Changed rom to Batista70 and heat issues deduced significantly, also changed kernel. Try changing both custom rom & kernel to find best combo for your phone use.

I had this issue while playing "Medieval Castle Defense", but not on "Asphalt".
Too much undervolting especially on the higher frequencies can cause overheating while running resource hungry app and games. [Says Tegrak himself! ]
If 39 degree is what you call too hot, my battery sometimes reaches that temp while surfing using hspa.
I experienced the same temps a while ago playing Asphalt 6 but i changed the settings SETCPU and from then on I have only top temps at about 40 maximum.

Hey, back again on a question about overclock an HTC Thunderbolt rooted with CM7 and Tiamat kernel. Anyways, I can overclock it to 1.9ghz pretty stable and suprisingly good battery life ( believe it or not ), get's kind of hot when charging though about 107 farenheit and 99 on daily use w/o it being plugged in. I was trying to get it to reach 2.0ghz, I know some of you will say its not that big of a jump from 1.9 to 2.0 but that's not the point, I am using SetCPU and Incredicontrol, and I just can't seem to keep it stable because I set it 2.0ghz and put the SVS volt in Incredicontrol to the high which is 1550 If I remember correctly, It's pretty stable but as soon as I press the lock button it freezes up and I have to take battery in/out. Any suggestions ? Thanks.
I'm not the most brilliant when it comes to overclocking (Having similar problems), but you have to keep in mind that 2GHz is double your stock clock speed, so yes, that is a big push. My recommendation is to find a low-voltage kernel that has Smartass V2 and try again.
Hmm wel l i do have smartass v2 but using smartass v1 with 1.9ghz overclocked no problems yet maybe il just stay at 1.9 but then again ill keep trying 2ghz until i get bored lol

...or cook your device. At the voltages you describe, I can all but promise you that you're slowly killing guy your phone. You're talking about a 5% gain in clock for a performance gain of less than 2%. Your phone probably isn't stable at all at 2ghz. Smartass ramps up to policy max at screen on, unless you change it, and it probably locks before the display even comes on. If you like your phone, stop. The return you get probably won't even do 1.9ghz, so count yourself lucky at that. Mine won't run that fast.

What is a safe voltage for 1.9ghz? I think right now it's at 1300-1450 I forgot, SVS(I don't know what the SVS is, just says on top of Incredicontrol). It's very stable and the phone doesn't even run hot, no random reboots or anything like that, but since you said the voltage thing I am worry now, can you explain some more? With my overclock right now which is as I said 1.9ghz, Am I still killing my phone? My battery life is pretty good except when watching videos, goes down very fast but other than that it's good. Btw what are good temps for my phone?

That kind of voltage tends to stress the silicone. If 1450 is your top limit, that's not too bad, but I probably wouldn't venture past that. Your governor is keeping it from running at that speed most of the time. Most of the heat you feel the phone give off is the battery. You really don't feel much of the heat from the CPU. Too much voltage is going to cook your CPU well before it begins to show temperatures on the battery sensor. As far as temps go, pretty much anything under 135F is ok. The battery will be the first thing to fail as temperatures rise. The SoC can tolerate much more. SVS just stands for Static Voltage Scaling, as opposed to HAVS, Hybrid Adaptive Voltage Scaling, which I don't think any Tbolt kernels support.
I don't get the purpose of that level of overclocking. My phone is snappy smooth and basically SAFE at 1.15 or 1.2

The core is designed to run at 1.5ghz (though the caches and memory arent fabbed to, really) so running at 1.5 or 1.6 isn't a big deal. More than that and you're really challenging it.
I've been playing Mass Effect Infiltrator for the last few days but my GS2 is getting really hot, up by the camera. Battery is warn but okay.
Anybody else get this or does anybody know what tweaks I can use with Fluxi kernel to solve this?
I have tried undervolting but only by 50mV per frequency, my GS2 doesn't seem to like undervolting.
My current set up:
GT-I9100
Slim ICS 3.8
Fluxi RC5.1
xxTweaker settings:
General
CPUIdle mode= AFTR + LPA
CPU
Maximum= 1200MHz
Maximum suspend= 800MHz
Minimum= 200MHz
Minimum suspend= 200MHz
CPU Voltage=
All frequencies: 200-1200MHz minus 50mV
Governor= Ondemand
All other xxTweaker settings are stock.
Any advice please?? TIA
Swyped from a distant star, the other side of the Galaxy on my Slim ICS powered GT-I9100©
Sounds normal to me. Game like that is going to be both CPU/GPU intensive. Not a great deal you can do about it. Obviously don't play it while the phone is on charge which will make it even worse.
temperature >50°C = not good
With SetCPU you can make a notification if the temperautre is more than 50°C, then take a short break and go on
sorry for bad engllish
Well its normal i guess
I tried the game on my stock gb 2.3.6 rooted with speedmode kernel
No overclock or underclock or undervolt..etc
And yes the game does heat up ur device like most of hd games like gameloft games
My device even gets worm by multi tasking
Generally my device is always 33temp when multi tasking and stuff like that
When gaming goes +40 depends om the game u play
I hate the over heat on galaxy s2 alot specially in summer it gets really hot... in winter i dont notice over heat that much..
Sent from my GT-I9100 press thanks if i helped
I got my OPX yesterday, and I love it. Battery life is good, I have SOT of 3 hours and still 43% left.
However, when playing light games, it reaches 60°C very quickly. For example Minecraft PE with low render distance.
My GPU is underclocked to max 330mhz, my CPU is not underclocked but undervolted (-75mv). Using blu.spark kernel on Oxygen 2.2.1.
The battery is draining a lot faster when playing as well.
Is this normal?
Edit: It's much better with CPU limited to 1.2GHz. But a bit laggy.
With 1.2GHz is only goes up to 49°C.
I would manually set voltages until they're the lowest you can go. I've never had mine heat up and I run emulators. You should be able to bring your max clock speed to around 980mv or so which for me has never produced heat. I have my phone over clocked to 2.57ghz and I've never had any problems with heat.
