[Q] Getting hot whilst playing Mass Effect Infiltrator? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been playing Mass Effect Infiltrator for the last few days but my GS2 is getting really hot, up by the camera. Battery is warn but okay.
Anybody else get this or does anybody know what tweaks I can use with Fluxi kernel to solve this?
I have tried undervolting but only by 50mV per frequency, my GS2 doesn't seem to like undervolting.
My current set up:
GT-I9100
Slim ICS 3.8
Fluxi RC5.1
xxTweaker settings:
General
CPUIdle mode= AFTR + LPA
CPU
Maximum= 1200MHz
Maximum suspend= 800MHz
Minimum= 200MHz
Minimum suspend= 200MHz
CPU Voltage=
All frequencies: 200-1200MHz minus 50mV
Governor= Ondemand
All other xxTweaker settings are stock.
Any advice please?? TIA
Swyped from a distant star, the other side of the Galaxy on my Slim ICS powered GT-I9100©

Sounds normal to me. Game like that is going to be both CPU/GPU intensive. Not a great deal you can do about it. Obviously don't play it while the phone is on charge which will make it even worse.

temperature >50°C = not good
With SetCPU you can make a notification if the temperautre is more than 50°C, then take a short break and go on
sorry for bad engllish

Well its normal i guess
I tried the game on my stock gb 2.3.6 rooted with speedmode kernel
No overclock or underclock or undervolt..etc
And yes the game does heat up ur device like most of hd games like gameloft games
My device even gets worm by multi tasking
Generally my device is always 33temp when multi tasking and stuff like that
When gaming goes +40 depends om the game u play
I hate the over heat on galaxy s2 alot specially in summer it gets really hot... in winter i dont notice over heat that much..
Sent from my GT-I9100 press thanks if i helped

848MHz?2.6.3x kernel?

Hi guys! For the last few days(that I have my Hero rooted that is) I'm using VillainRom 10 as my everyday ROM and have tried some others.Anyway, that's not the point!
Being one of the lucky ones whose Hero can happily overclock to 768 I came to use RaduG's extremekernel and ben39's no-bfs no-whining kernel. With the second, while configuring OverclockWidget I saw that it gives a 848MHz option with auto-detect frequencies. Is it possible?I'm not asking about stable daily use,but even for some minutes for benchmarking?Has anyone achieved it?Without making their phone catch on fire that is!
And secondly, why are we all using linux 2.6.29(for total newbies I mean the kernel) while there is 2.6.32-33-34?Can't a newer kernel be compiled for use with the Hero?Newer kernels would provide native ext4 support and would probably prove to be better overall.
Oh,forgot one more!I am currently running on minimum 176MHz-maximum 749MHz(after I got a couple reboots with 768 I abandoned 19MHz for stability) with screen on and minimum 123MHz-maximum 384MHz with screen off.Should I give it a higher minimum frequency?Sometimes it lags when waking up,the screen turns on but shows nothing but black and turns off again or it turns on and everything is distorted, colors are completely distorted, background is upside down and some other unnormal things, but everything is alright when turning the screen off and back on again.Does it have to do anything with the frequencies I am using?I am running on VillainRom 10.3.
Now I have set the minimums to 160 and 190 MHz to see what happens!
Thanks in advance!
About the high MHz... I have done it with over 800 but don't max it out at 848 or your phone will freeze but anything below works And that screen **** I've also had and it has something to do with the high MHz (don't know why) but it helped me to set the MHz lower when the phone sleeps in SetCPU And at last about the kernel... It runs on the old one on Android 2.1 but in 2.2 it will be upgraded to ....33 or ....32 don't remember which...

Thanks for your reply C0mpu13rFr34k!
I know Eclair is running on the old kernel.I just would like to know if it is possible to compile a newer kernel for it.
As for the frequencies...Are my settings alright? Some too high or too low?The way I see it there is a big gap between maximum and minimum frequencies when screen on which results on the CPU working at low frequencies most of the time, thus sacrificing performance. But it helps with battery life and presumably this and the screen-off underclocking reduce the overall damage caused to the CPU by the overclocking, which is said to reduce the CPU's total lifetime by 50% or more, depending on how much you overclock it.Working at 749 I sometimes get a nice 43 degrees Celsius while charging, but that's only when charging.Average temperatures are 30 for standby and 37 with screen on(average, can be lower or higher).
And one more question. At 800+ how hot does it get? Will it be stable for some minutes to do some basic benchmarking or nah..?
Thanks!

If your phone is stable your settings are just fine even though your phone might have problems waking up if the low freq is under 246MHz (something like that) Also if you want better performance you might want to test some other freqs and then benchmark... Sometimes it makes a BIG difference if your phone is running at 691MHz or 710MHz For me my phone works like **** if it runs at 749MHz but it works like a dream at 729MHz (I think the difference was 0.5-0.8MFLOPS) Im also pretty sure your temp is fine (OC shouldn't make your phone that much hotter since the voltages in all ROMs are adjustet). If you should compile a newer kernel you would first of all need a .32 (.33?) from HTC because of hardware capabilities and im sure there's is A LOT more things devs need to compile such a kernel but i don't know to much about kernels I don't really know that much about 800+ because I only did it once and benchmarked it (MFLOPS was **** and i couldn't get them high at all) actually it slowed down my phone but you should test it. Maybe your very lucky and your phone can take it
Well,I have set it to 653min-749max with screen on and 160min-352max with screen off.Testing only! But it runs like a dream if we don't take into account a small lagging when I turn the screen on and it has to change frequencies! But it's great so far. Will see how battery life goes!By the way, tried 800,806 and 848MHz,but none worked. It didn't crash or something,it just wouldn't change to it and stayed at lower frequencies(low as 246).
Thanks for your time anyway!
And a small question...How bad does overclocking affect the CPU's life?I asked around and was told that the maximum overclock for desktop PCs is 20-25%,depending on the CPU,while needing special cooling systems, and that it can reduce the CPU's life up to 50%.Given that we overclock over 40%,how bad do we damage our CPUs?

I haven't heard to much about that actually but from what I've heard it shouldn't damage the CPU at all because of the voltage adjustments but i find that very hard to believe... Talking from personal experience my phone runs as smooth now as it did when i bought it so my CPU has probably taken minamal- or no damage at all and I got it when it had just come out here in Denmark (Europe) which is about 8+ months i think? So I wouldn't care to much about the lifetime since It's probably like 1-2 years and by that time I don't think people are using the Hero anymore Keep up the good work with optimizing and your welcome

Phone too hot to touch after 5 minutes of gaming.

Hi all, running lite'ning rom 1.4 and just played order and chaos for 5 minutes and the phone became too hot to touch! Surely this shouldn't be right, i mean what the hell! Anyone else have this?

Actually yes, many people have this. It's the CPU overheating.Beware,it doesn't get hotter than other CPUs on the market, but heat disipation on the GS2 is minimal as the phone is so thin.
The only thing you can try is lowering the CPU clock to 1000Mhz or even 800Mhz when gaming. You can even boost your GPU to 400Mhz up from 267Mhz and don't overheat then. There will also be no performance hit as games run mainly on the GPU and two cores running at 1GHz are more than enough to handle the background.
I havent noticed the phone getting super hot as some people have noted. I do notice that it does get a lot hotter if its plugged in and charging while playing a game. Are you by chance charging while playing? If so, I'd try and play while not charging to see if it gets really hot still.
No this isnt while charging and it literally was 5 minutes of playing! How do I change the cpu and gpu speeds safetly?
it also depends on the game itself, many of them are just poorly programmed
to your question: setcpu is the app.

I dont have an SGS2 yet but your statement has a total flaw, if games mainly use the GPU then there should be zero need to underclock the CPU.

Have you ever seen anything running on the GPU ONLY?What I mean is that the GPU processes the graphics, which are important when playing a game. The CPU takes on other tasks, like opponent's AI(artificial intelligence),background and foreground code running and many other things.Sound maybe? All these things keep the CPU running at 100% for no reason.Lower the clock and voila!
Check first before you try to say I'm wrong next time.I don't usually say bullsh!t with such things.

[Q] Xtreme Heat

Okay so i've Noticed that recently on ics roms that when web browsing or playing games my neo gets really hot. I expected this as it has a lot to process but today whilst web browsing it got so hot that i couldent hold it anymore and it started making a burning smell. (this is without overclock min: 242 Max: 1024) i super quickly took out the battery and left it outside for a bit and it seems okay now but i was woundering why it keeps getting so hot on ics roms, as i dosent over heat on gingbread even with over clock!
Is it to do with Hardware Acceleration?
Same issue here although it never reached the burning smell! . Does any1 know the reason?

Burning smell is not a good sign, suggest you to move back to gingerbread as a precaution mate.
>>Is it to do with Hardware Acceleration?
can be,without debugging much cannot be told I guess.

Glad it's not just me then, Yeah the burning smell was after a few hours of browsing and playing fruit ninja.
me too annoying when your in the middle of somthing then your neo heats like theres no tommorrow =.=
I tried turning off "force gpu rendering" but still same heat ??? im very confuzzled.
same here, and i did a quick remove and back to .62
Neo gets Really Hot when playing games and surfing internet
The heat is too much that My hand can't stand it :'(
this is very unpleasant and really annoying.
Each time I play a game I have to take of the cover and its kinda help somehow but still it gets too much hotter.
most of the time its temperature raise more than 40 C*
any solution for this problem?
After 40-50 minutes in Modern Combat 3 multiplayer,my phone was very hot,but i think its normal, other games, programs make the phone only a little hot....
You mentioned "overclocking" ... and that's the most likely cause of overheating right there ... in your place i'd try to set the clocks back to factory defaults and use the phone then, i'm using Neo MT15i(currently with Cyanogen mod 7.2.0 RC1) and never had overheating issues

I get the same heat with underclocking @800mhz
and i dont get heat on gingerbread, only ics. in fact i overclock without heat on stock gingerbread using nightelf kernel.
Have the same problem with ka09 + pwa ics kernel 1.0 .Neo is abnormally hot compared to cm7.2 109 + nightelf lite 3.3.Could it be because the rom as a whole s still in beta stage ? And to clarify im not using oc just stock speeds.

This seems too big and too common of a problem for sony to leave. im sure it wont be happening in final ics release.
I hope that its only a nasty bug in the beta rom .The strange thing is that not many have noticed it so im wondering if it apperas only to some devices. Btw the ics roms cant be compared with the gb ones .Its like the day and night
Heating of smartphone is normal, especially when you oc your cpu...
When I'm playing eg. mc3, 9mm or gta3 with [email protected],4GHz after tens of minutes my phone is warm, but not really hot.

Yes i know but the thing is even with the oc 1.4 on cm7.2 rom it doesnt heat as much as the 1024mhz on ics.Anyway i hope its fixed inthe final version .
playing heavy games will no doubt heat ur phone...i think it is the beta rom bug...also...i have noticed that when i browse internet in 3G mode...the phone really heats up if it is not receiving good signal strength...mine heats up even on stock rom without OC.
i got heat on gb rom too ( @1024mhz max) playing nova 2 D:

SOLVED
SOLVED: (i think)
been doing some research into kernel governors and found out that the current "ondemmad" governor has a really fast ram up to high clock speeds. Whereas governors such as Smartass have a slow ramp up.
I believe this is the cause of our heat problems as when using Night elfs kernel with smartassv2 governor i played 3 hours of games (nova 2, fruit ninja, defender II) and neo got warm but not hot atal.
I also check cpu spy and despite the different governor the both reached speeds above 800Mhz.
SO i guess the fast ramp up in the ondemmand governor cause heat then?
So why not test with governors that have slow ramp up and tell me if heat gone
In gb roms with fxp kernel ,clocked to 1024 with ondemand when playing heavy games like e.warriors the phone get a little warm but cant say too hot.The problem is that in ics rom it gets warm just by having the display on (ondemand,1024 speed). When i will flash again a beta ics i will post that if changing to smartass has an effect in temp.

The best over clocking apps??

First off is this a good idea? can such small devices be over clocked in a safe way without risking damaging the hardware?
if yes which would you say was the best app for doing so?
Hi,
A good idea... maybe, maybe not... it depends on what you want... higher scores in bench?A shorter battery life?A very very hot device while browsing or gaming (if you run at 1.8Ghz for example)?A little extra power for some apps/games?
With overclocking a little (1.5/1.6Ghz) I noticied that some apps open a little faster and the genera UI is a little more responsive...
There is always a (little) risk to overclock our phones, generally due to overheat but also some CPU's can't handle high overclock.
For me I don't remember reading someone burn her CPU with overclocking but...
There are still some software protections before to burn a CPU (thermal throttling, CPU temp limit before shutdown, etc...).
Obiously the duration of life could be reduced mainly if you always run at 1.8Ghz with playing games... So the "safe" way would be no overclock or a little overclock like 1.5Ghz... For you to test and decide...
For the apps: SetCpu, System Tuner... there is a bunch on the Play Store.Just for the CPU settings I would say SetCpu.
For me i will never overclock my cpu. Just install siyah kernel and it's pretty smooth in games. Overclocking will damage your cpu and maybe loose some of the performance.
I can't see the need on this device, I might experiment with uv, maybe even underclocking, but as above, super smooth on siyah, and Slim Rom

Talking about battery life i installed darkys rom 3 onto my i9300 and the battery life is already suffering a loss of maybe around 25%. In saying that over clocking will only cause me to lose even more so ill leave it for now

Overclocking won't damage your CPU unless you set crazy voltages, or let it overheat. Also, it won't lose performance... that's crazy talk. Only if it overheats will it throttle, but that only happens on large clock rates like 1.8GHz or if you're in a hot environment.
I had my old LG GT540 overclocked with no heat problems mind that was only a 600mhz cpu, had it up to 825mhz.
But we already have a powerful cpu in this phone, foe now I don't see the need to overclock.

The best app depends a lot on your kernel and device. For example, for my Galaxy S2 the best OC was with TegraK Overclock.
With my Xoom CPU Tuner is still the best.
With the S3 I suppose CPU tuner would be alright as well, but I haven't had the urge to OC it, because I find SiyahKernel still quite unstable in the S3.
You need an overclockable kernel in order to OC your phone.
As for damages, it is hard to tell if they are permanent, but picture this: your battery will have to be recharged more often, because it will drain faster. Since batteries have a limited lifespan which depends on how many charge cycles they go through, the more often you discharge/charge them, the shorter their lifespan will be.
Also, there is no telling what kind of ill-effects the added heat can do to the phone. It may be totally harmless, but it may also affect the quality of the display, since the added heat will be right underneath the screen.
The lifespan of the CPU will be shortened: instead of being able to work well for 20 years, it will work well for 18, 17, 15, but more than enough time for us to already have replaced our S3 for organic, intradermal smartphones!

v6 supercharger & UV -100

just 2 simple questions guys. From what i read the v6 supercharger script helps the ram not go below 200....from monitoring my ram usage, the lowest ive seen it drop is 230mb ish. I have not monitored during gaming, but will it help with gaming?
and i see alot of persons UV to -100. Ive tried it and seen no almost no difference in battery life. (using Stweaks and Siyah kernel with Omega rom)
Does it affect gaming in any way, or is it just my eyes cause fruit ninja and temple run have slight framterate dips (or could it be power saving mode)?
thanks for the responses
Anyone?
I didnt get your question completely...
And yes, powersaving mod decreases framerate to 40 instead of almost 60fps.. you can check it by using fpsmeter in playstore..is paid btw..
And supercharger does decrease the ram being used but its not good for multitasking according to my experience..
Hope that clears it..

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if undervolting to - 100 decrease overall performance in anyway?
Power saving mode will have an affect on overall performance. UV.......hmm if I'm honest I do it just so my phone doesn't get warm. A lot of tests show that UV will save around 1-2% of battery. Biggest battery drain are still the screen and apps that stop the device from entering deep sleep. If UV causes games to lag it simply means you've UV too much
