Opinions please, and spare me the n00b talk I understand all of this.
What I'm most concerned about it battery life, reviews all say it sucks. What are your opinions?
I have the amaze, sensation, and g2x. Battery life isn't any better on one then the other. The sensation has the worse screen of the three. The camera on the g2x is the worse of the three. Other then that they seem pretty close as far as everything else goes. I can go in to much greater detail but that's the basics. Of course this is imo.

Just based on build quality alone, screw Samsung. I've owned 4 of their devices (loved the screen) but they are cheap and tacky plastic...not worth the money you'd spend on them.

In my opinion, they should either switch to metal, or to maintain their lightweight nature, carbon fiber. I'd buy it for that price if it were carbon fiber ...

Exactly...I want a device that merits a +$300 price tag.
Kinda getting ahead of yourself with no price or date announcement for Tmo no ?
After playing with both Amaze > SGS2. Screen clarity and camera speed were definitely better. SGS2 ALOT lighter and thinner...Amaze was very brickish.
Dev community for Amaze seems like it will definitely be second fiddle.
I just want android 2.4

I would thoroughly look forward to the retraction !
I really like the amaze outside of the girth. But no sign of carrier/pricing on GN yet so I have to wait and see.
BTW while we're at it anyone care to comment on the GPU of the Amaze in comparison to the SGS2 ?

the GPU is exactly the same. we didnt get the mali400 like the international variant, or the exynos chip. all it is is an overclocked sensation in a samsung body... lol

Exactly what I thought
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
I am personally think it would be as simple as
Galaxy Nexus (NFC, Barometer, Face-unlock ICS)
Amaze (expandable sd card, sweet camera/video, Sense)
The sensation is old news and the SGS2 is just wishing it was as good as a Amaze (build design of course)
Not even a question. Why wait for ICS when you have a chance at the GN?
GN all the way IMO.

I came from the G2x, but haven't had any of the other phones. I think the battery consumption might be *slightly* higher with this phone, but not like "OMG my power!!!" bad. The way I see it, the devs will get it on par or better than my G2x was regardless.
From a screen and build perspective, the Amaze takes it hands down.

I couldn't agree more. I must have spent over an hour playing with both the SGS2 and the Amaze, and I simply couldn't stand the Samsung. It felt way too light, and "cheap", as others have described it. And to think I had gone in with the expectation of walking out with the Samsung.

Amaze has nfc too
What is the use of barometer, my xoom has, but what it use for? Nothing..
All these new flashship phone will all have icecream.
I just low my amaze alot, because of the touch and feel of it.
Really high quality and sharp screen
Spent a month and a half with the epic touch gs2 and I have to say that it does not compare to the amaze. They just feel too damn cheap! Only thing it does better in my opinion is quadrant scores but who gives a crap, lol. If you want to feel like your holding 300$ get the amaze, well worth it.

Battery Life is very poor. Buy a power skin if you really use your phone...especially as a 4G Data connection in lieu of a USB 4G Stick

Not all of us are experiencing the same battery life issues. So....your mileage may vary.
OK, AT&T is going to give me an out-of-cycle upgrade due to so many issues with my Captivate. I was already convinced that I wanted the SGSII until I saw the new SGSIISR. I'm not in an LTE area and don't expect to be any time soon, but the specs on the SR look too good to pass up. Unfortunately, I read a lot of issues with the SR's BT operation and that's one function I use a lot (streaming Slacker and MP3s in car and on my Harley). I also read that the SR does not have Gorilla Glass, something I really liked about my Cappy. Is there anything about the SR that I would regret not having if I choose to go with the SGSII?
My other concern is what can I bring over from my Cappy via TiBU? I'm running Andromeda3 (love it!) on the Cappy with a few tweaks (circle batt mod, for one). Will any of them cause issues on the SGSII? Thanks for the help.
As far as things with the sr, if you don't have LTE YET In your area, there is no reason for you to get the sr in my opinion.
There are great roms over here, but your Andromeda will not work to my knowledge.

The biggest question is...
Is 4.5" too big? I have an Infuse and it's too big. The sgs2 is the perfect size for me.
I also don't like to be the early adopter. Let everyone else work out the LTE kinks then jump over next gen when the coverage is more complete.
There is nothing about the SR other than LTE that exceeds the I777 in specs, other than the larger screen size.
The SR is heavier
The SR is thicker
The SR has a weaker processor (clock speed isn't everything - think Pentium 4 vs. Athlon XP as an example)
The SR has shorter battery life (LTE + Snapdragon + lots of bugs due to being a niche almost-one-off device with low design maturity) despite having slightly higher battery capacity - LTE alone is more than enough to offset this.
The SR has zero commonality with Samsung's international flagship, the I9100.

Exactly what I was looking for. I was concerned about the size. With my failing eyes I tend towards bigger screens, but as I handle the phone while riding my bike I need something that isn't too big. I also want better battery life. Guess I'll stick to the SGSII. I like that there is a ton of DEV support for it. Now, if someone can point me to a ROM as good as Andromeda3...
I am stuck in same debate but I live in a lte market but still consider phone but I like large screen but enough to give up a better quality phone and cm9 is important so no one saying if either will get it.

as far as a good ROM goes it is really up to what you like. Do you like touchwiz? Do you like AOSP? there are soooo many options for this phone because you can use ROMs from this section, or you can head over to the i9100 forum and grab something up from over there and use the hellraiser mod to make it compatible with our device. I personally use the turkbey 29.3GT ROM, with the siyah 2.4.2 kernel, and Ive never been more satisfied. heres a link to the turkbey post http://www.google.com/url?q=http://...ds-cse&usg=AFQjCNFFmWlIqH4NuisG7tHvQbTow-CceQ

I also live in an LTE market, BUT, I usually use WiFi anyway. I went with the GS II, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. My brother has the SR, and the GS II is smoother/faster/more liquid than the SR by far. The qualcomm processor/adreno 220 gpu in the SR can't even hold a candle to the exynos/mali 400 combo in the GS II, even though its clocked @ 1.5 ghz, the 1.2 ghz exynos is faster, by far. Not to mention the SR feels like your holding a VCR, lol. I had the T989 before I had my GS II, and as I said before, my brother currently has the SR and the Atrix 4g, and he constantly uses his Atrix as his daily driver, I even think the tegra2 in the atrix is better than the qualcomm. And keep in mind, as u can tell from my list of previous devices below, I am unbiased as to manufacturer, if its android, and I like it, I use it. Period. I am being 100% honest when I say in my opinion the GS II i777 is the best device Ive ever owned, and even with the release of the galaxy nexus, I STILL believe IMHO its still the best device on the market, besides the resolution and ICS (which we'll have soon anyway) the i777 pulls ahead in hardware.

in that case they have something called superosr you should check out. Its in the i777 forum and its a mixture of vanilla and cm7. Its really cool, you get the best of both worlds. We also have cm7 and Im sure cm9 and ICS soon enough. The GS II's development is going to continue to boom for a long time, the device is just too damn good for it not too. Look at the evo, or the nexus for example, older phone but the devving STILL continues no matter how outdated they are. This device is a safe bet, and its ROM selection will definitely provide you with something that suits your wants/needs.

I am looking for its replacement, any suggestions?

So whats the best of the best as i will not buy anything but.

I'll join the guys and recommend SGS2 as well. I have this phone for two months now, and the more I learned about the device starting with just rooting, flashing custom ROMs and kernels, using custom performance profilrs the more joy it is to use every day... PS the display rocks!! Only downside is battery life under heavy use but what the hell

i love my htc hd2
I'm also going to jump onto the SGSII bandwagon. I have the one from Sprint and I swear I can't make this phone lag. I've tried freaking everything and it just won't lag.
Since EL12 came out and fixed the LOS and game bug crash issues, I've had zero issues with it. So I assume that the sgsII from other providers are just as good (especially the ones with the exynos processors).
SGSII FTW!!!
Photon 4G. More of a business type phone. It holds signal much better than the SGSII. It's screen is 4.3 inches and a bit thicker. Great build quality. The development side is poor though as unlocking right now will break your 4G. I can also recommend the Droid Razr.
Why guys?

Or should I try to get it in the US then unlock it here?
I know that i can get a deal on a plan over there with the phone vs just getting the plan w/o a phone so that may make my choice easier
Everyone keeps saying get this or that, but not telling me why really.

Well I hate
1) I cannot do anything to the phone, ROMS etc
2) I am tired of paying for every app I want to use.
3) They wont unlock it so i can use it when i travel
4) The display is as boring as watching CNN, those little squares are so stupid
5) I miss my HTC screens where I check the weather and the sun shines, or rain drops hit my screen etc. I like to be entertained by my phone and the iPhone is just so linear in that regard.

The only thing good about the nexus is the screen. The phone is only running a 1.2ghz possessor so in the you will be able to get better performance out of the amaze. The nexus's camera is not impressive at all with only 5Mp and single led. No sd card slot. Just saying that it could be the way you are running your phone that makes it slow. You can do way more with the amaze than you can the nexus. In the end they don't call the amaze the iPhone killer for nothing.

In the end they don't call the amaze the iPhone killer for nothing.

you know I looked at the phone and I actually did like it, but there were a lot of dissapointing features for me to dish out and buy it. First off the camera is below supbar, cameras now are 8mp and in a few months we'll start seeing better cameras than even our amaze.
second was the pentile screen, I had the nexus one and hated pentile. Even at 720p you can tell it's pentile because the screen is so huge...the 720p rezound looks much much better, I am a big fan of amoled but only if samsung figures out how to put a super amolded PLUS 720p on a phone!
The great thing about the phone which I miss about my nexus one is developement support. It's google flagship, and will have huge ammount of support for years to come, even the nexus one still have lot of support.
I would not necessarily say that the galaxy nexus is slower with 1.2 because it uses an OMAP processor. I havn't done a the research on omap vs snapdragon 3, and honestly it surprises me why samsung didn't use the exynos processor in this phone. a 1.2 exynos processor can compete and beat our amazes 1.5 snapdragon 3 but I don't know about the omap process. I believe a reason that the phone seems faster is support for multicore on ics...right now we do not officially have support for dual core...as we get ICS I bet/hope we will much improved speeds. with that said I have not had any lag or anything like that on my phone with clock set at 1.5.
I was debating on getting a second phone and it would be the galaxy nexus...but again It would probably be sitting on my desk rather than in my pocket. I would probably use it for a lot of rom flashing playing around etc.
What I really liked about the amaze is dedicated camcorder and camera buttons, and a really nice camera...
on the galaxy nexus I could do away with the camcorder button, but I do really need a camera button. If they had put a better camera on that phone with a dedicate camera button, I would have dealt with the 720 pentile screen and gone for that phone. But right now all of samsung cameras on their phones are inferior to the HTC amaze and HTC rezounds camera, not to say this won't change in the future.
one last point was that galaxy nexus felt a little too big in the hand, I think 4.3 inch screen is the max i'm willing to go for a phone (one reason I returned my sgsII was the huge size), I could car less about the weight, as long as I'm now benching the phone in the gym, thinness is also an issue and the amaze is as thick as i'm willing to have my phone.

Not trying to be "rude" but ever heard of some devices called dslr? You might want to give them a try, they take pretty sweet pics since camera is the one most important feature in a phone according to you

I'm planning to buy my first Android phone and I've chose then Samsung Galaxy S2. But what i'm unsure of, is that after investing a substantial amount of money (its still expensive in my country) will it be good enough to handle updates beyond JB for the coming two years? or will it be outdated soon and should i rather go for the s3? Need help! Thanks
S2 is still very good device!
IMO it is worth to buy it.

If you can afford it, Go for SIII or wait for NOTE II.

Don't do it.
The sgs2 is at the end of its support life if we get jelly bean I'll be ecstatic.. But we will not get anything else.. And we will not get the full source code to enable a proper realise of a newer Android OS.
The sgs3 may be short lived as the sgs2 is whispered to come in April..
Save your money buy it used or buy a different phone

Are you saying S3 will be outdated soon? Really? i don't think there is any other phone that rivals the S3 at the moment. I won't go for the Note II. Its ridiculously big and i hate big ass phones.

You're from India, right? Right now there's about a 12K price difference between the S2 and S3. So I'm assuming price will play a pretty big part in deciding on a phone. The S2 as of now probably has the most support amongst all android phones while the s3 support is comparatively still in a nebulous stage. Having said that, most devs who're working on the S2 now seem to slowly be moving towards the S3..So S3 dev support will only improve with time. The S2 is definitely getting the next iteration of android. But that'll probably be it. So it should be good for the next couple of years at the very least. but beyond that..who knows. Its like comparing the where the s2 is now to the galaxy s.
If your pocket allows it, go with the s3, else the s2 is still right up there with the best IMO.

Its like this. If you want a good phone where you can do anything one can do, and still not be very expensive, go for the S2. You can do everything with that phone. No limitations whatsoever. Good camera, good looking, not so big, and very smooth with enough space for installing apps.
If you want an awesome phone and expensive one, go for the S3, but you would still find everything you do on S3 also in S2. No major differences in there, except the price.
And I am sure with the latest and upcoming Jelly Bean update the S2 will become and even better phone. I really hope that they will also update it with the latest TouchWiz 5 UX Nature interface. If Samsung does that, I will not envy my father for having an S3 at all.
I have both phones in my home and the only major differences between S2 and S3 are on the interface, and the display. S3 has a much much better display and the latest TouchWiz interface is very cool.
Hope I helped in your decision.
Thanks Haxtream, Agonn that really helped. One last question! The HTC One S is from the same category as the S2 right? But in India HTC is lauching it with S3 snapdragon processor overclocked at 1.7ghz instead of the new S4 Krait architecture chip. Its only 3k more than the S2, and since its launched with ICS I'm assuming it will get updates beyond JB.. is it a good option? overclocked processors won't heat up much right?
I can say now in newest google android version we cannot to do customs roms because its some custiminazion center... sorry if my bad english
Send form Galaxy S2. Using XDA Premium
Can't say I know much about the One-S but what I do know is that the dev support for it is pretty weak. More so if you compare it to the S2's. I'm assuming its mainly coz of HTCs locked boot loader which they're still trying to work around. Might improve in the future, but you never know.
Another thing is with this whole system of using different chipsets in some countries. It leads to a lot of chaos and confusion if you're into flashing custom ROMs and the like. For proof, just look up the number of people who have managed to flash an i9100 rom on their i9100G phone and bricked it. (If you do go the S2 way, be wary of shops trying to pass off an i9100G in an i9100 box.happened to me.)
Finally..I don't know how it is in Kolkata but here there are barely any HTC service centres.so any problem with the phone means you're stuck for ages. Samsungs service centres are a dime a dozen here. Didn't like the way the fellows were behaving in one service centre so next time I had an issue went to another one literally 500mts away.
Will it get support beyond JB? Who knows? These companies are incredibly cagey about releasing info on releases and since it won't be their latest model nor a past flagship (that I guess is the One-X) I wouldn't count on an upgrade..leave alone a quick one.

Now this is turning into an essay so forgive me. But regarding the overclocked processor. Extreme overclocking does equal more heat. But if the company is releasing it that way itself it should be alright.
I know the S4 chip does..not so sure about the S3 chip. Atleast one of them uses the 28nm manufacturing process. AFAIK the i9100 chips' is 45nm. A smaller manufacturing process theoretically atleast, should produce lesser heat even if overclocked.

Hi, if you want long term support for new android go for google nexus, if possible. The first nexus (very old phone) got JB while we are still waiting for SII official JB, and i'm starting to worry if it will ever arrive.
Cheers!

Nexus gets all the latest updates because it is mainly a Google designed product made by Samsung and Google doesn't have other phones to update as far as I am concerned, I so it's easier for them to only update one device than it is for Samsung who have hundreds of devices to work on updating.
It's not because the S2 is inferior to Nexus cause it has probably even better specs and a much better camera, 8MP, while Nexus only has a 5MP camera.
If you are okay with using custom made Roms than you should definitely choose the Samsung Galaxy S2. There are some truly amazing custom ROM's out there in which you'll be able to run Jelly Bean very good and overclock/underclock your phone to up to 1600MhZ and still have not so much overheating problems.
As for HTC one S, and I don't really know much about it. A friend of mine has a HTC one X and he likes it veryI much. Ive had that phone in hand and it was good amazing screen but too expensive. I would suggest you to get the S2 until a much better phone comes out and you make the money to buy it. Cheers.

Argh! Nexus One (the first nexus) has been abandoned by Google. It did not get official JB update.

One last question, This will be my first android phone, So lets say I won't be flashing new roms' on the ONE S with the s3 chip, will simple rooting be also a problem?
IMO just getting root access on any phone should be pretty simple, the best place to get that answer would be the One S forum dude.. people who have and use the phone will be best placed to tell you how easy or difficult it is. Unless someone here has that phone as well or has rooted it for someone else, you wouldn't get a firsthand opinion (for want of a better term)
