Safe to restore nandroid to replacement RAZR? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Getting a replacement RAZR from VZW because my current one has a broken magnetometer. Current phone is rooted and I'm going to root the replacement. Can I restore the nandroid backup from the old phone to the new one safely? Should I restore everything or just /data, /boot, /cache and not /system (by using advanced restore option in CWM). Please don't conjecture if you've never personally done this.
Thanks!

Same phone to the same phone. Should be completely fine. Just a thought, some people know what they're talking about without ever having to actually do said task. Just a thought.

Excellent. I'm going for it and will report on the results.
A web search for answers to this question results in responses mostly saying never to do such a thing or you'll blow the roof off your house.

Nandroid restore successful
My full nandroid restore from my defective old RAZR to a new replacement RAZR running the same ROM (standard OTA 2.3.6) was successful. Here's how I did it:
Backed up the old RAZR using Bootstrap Recovery app-->CWM. Before I did this, I was sure to "Delete su backup" in Voodoo Rootkeeper app. [If this isn't done and you've used Voodoo to preserve su, you won't be able to restore /system to the new device. CWM will fail at this step. Workaround is to go into Advanced Restore and manually restore everything except /system. This will work.]
After swapping cards and setting up the new RAZR, confirming it was running the latest OTA, I used mattlgrof's RAZR Utility 1.42, option 2 to root device (set phone on Charge Only, and allow USB debugging). After successful root, I immediately chose option 5 to install Bootstrap Recovery app. I then checked the newly installed Superuser app on the new RAZR to be sure I had the latest su file.
Then, Bootstrap Recovery reboot into CWM and a full restore of the latest backup I made with the old RAZR. After reboot, a couple of aftermarket apps had lost their data, but everything else was exactly like the old RAZR--perfect!

Glad you got it and thanks for posting an update!

I should also mention that the replacement phone VZW sent me was brand new, even though it was stickered as a refurb. Tech support told me the replacements are pulled right off the factory floor but have to be called refurbs for warranty purposes. The device is not only looking and working like it's brand spanking new, the screen is almost entirely free of the blotches my original RAZR had in dim light on blank screen.

[Q] Is a 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 update possible? (when it's available)

I'm thinking about SBFing my rooted x2 back to 2.3.3 from 2.3.4 because of the terrible battery indicator, and was just wondering if I would be able to update straight to 2.3.5 (or possibly ICS) when the update comes. I don't know why this wouldn't be possible, but I just wanted to make sure before I actually SBFed the phone.
I also was wondering if my phone would still be rooted after the SBF because of the maintain-root-through-any-update mod. Any thoughts?
On a different note, if I had the x2 bootstrap, the maintain-root-through-any-update mod, and MyBackup Root, could I just backup all my apps and the system (using MyBackup Root and the bootstrap, respectively), SBF, then restore the phone by downloading the bootstrap and MyBackup Root and restoring my apps/system? Would this get my back to where I was before, or would I have to manually download each one of my apps and lose all previous data that I had on them? I'm just wondering what's the easiest way to restore my phone back to the layout that I had before I SBFed.
Thanks for your answers to any of these 3 questions!!! I definitely appreciate it.

Perhaps someone elses experience proves different however, I kept 2.2.2 on my DX2 for quite some time because of similar reasons. When I decided to take the plunge from 2.2.2 and upgraded to 2.3.4 OTA, my phone needed to first upgrade to 2.3.3 before it would upgrade to 2.3.4. Thus, I had to perform two separate OTA updates.
If you're going to SBF you can SBF directly from your current version to the desired version.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I personally prefer to SBF to a clean DX2, wiping all settings and cache. To me I treat it like formatting my computer with a clean install of it's OS.
Perhaps someone else will have more insight with the maintain root through updates mod.

What I typically do is using the X2 Bootstrap, I make a Nandroid backup and restore directly from that. Performing an SBF is only going to be necessary if the backup was on a different kernel, otherwise if you may run into boot looping.
What exactly happened and what are you trying to do? Are you trying to restore your phone to an earlier point via SBF? As in you enjoyed the phone on 2.3.3, made a backup and now you're unhappy on 2.3.4 and wish to go back?
It sounds like if you were to SBF back to your desired version (the version you made the backups on) you would then be able to apply your backups and should be back to your desired phone state.
I'm slightly confused to the details due to the way it's worded. I know it's somewhat difficult to describe but that's the basic idea I'm getting. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or fill in the blanks.
Is 2.3.5 much better?

Okay so what I did was SBF back to 2.3.3 (I did this two nights ago) and before I did that, I:
1. Renamed the bloatware back to .apk (I had the suffix's ".bak" as an alternate "freezing" method).
2. Used MyBackup Root to make a backup of all my apps+their data.
3. Made a backup of the phone using the bootstrap.
4. SBFed
5. Rooted
6. Downloaded MyBackup Root
7. Restored all my apps and data and it worked!!!
8. Celebrated! I had no faith in it working but all my apps are back! I was so impressed, I was expecting to have to redo all my games and everything. MyBackup Root is such a sweet app, or I'm just a loser.
I hoped this helped other people, I had no idea what was gonna happen, no one's ever told me how to specifically get my phone back to the layout that I wanted.
and related to reaktor's post, what I was doing was SBFing back to my desired state of 2.3.3, just because I hate the battery glitch on 2.3.4. It had nothing to do with any apps I had, sorry for the confusion.
Your last reply was a little off but that was my fault, I'm sorry for my wording haha. I just have never known how to NOT have to redownload all my apps and start over on my games' data once I restore/SBF a phone. Now I know.
BTW my phone didn't maintain its root, just for reference for others. I had to reroot.
Well... You might want to do that again. There's now a battery fix for 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 in the dev forum.

It works great
Greatttttt haha all that fer nuthin. I may update again, or I just might wait til I get bored with the phone again to install this. Thanks a bunch for the link though!

The battery fix works great. Just flash it over stock or any custom rom. It works perfect!

First ROM Install on RAZR Question

I wanted to ask the community for some general advice before flashing my first ROM on my VZ RAZR Maxx. I'm not quite a noob when it comes to this, I tried a bunch of ROM's on my fire (which is really why I bought it in the first place), but have been a bit hesitant when it came to doing anything to the phone. Finally this week I was tired of the bloat and lag,so i rooted and installed safestrap. Root went fine, but because of my own stupidity, got stuck in a boot loop for a couple hours after putting safestrap on. Taking a lesson from that experience, I wanted to see if anyone had some general advice to offer.
I'm used to TWRP, but safestrap is a much different looking interface. Is the process basically the same? Factory reset, flash, wipe caches? Anything else I need to be aware of before enabling ss? I'm leaning towards the Black Widow rom, seems like a good place to start.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

It's fine to enable Safe System right away, but it's a good idea to make a backup of your stock ROM first, of course ^-^ After Safe System is enabled, I believe you have to format the system as well before installing a ROM. It's under "mounts and storage" and then format /system I believe. Then typical data, cache and dalvik wipe.
Thanks. I'm planning on pulling the trigger tomorrow, but have a question about enabling safe system. What I thought caused my boot loop in the first place was doing that without a rom installed on the safe/non-safe side. Again, my fault for reading only the install instructions and figuring I could make my way through the rest. Just don't want to have to run it over with my car and cash in on insurance (only reason I even took it)

Make sure you download gaaps. You will need it to get your app store. Some roms come with gaaps built in and some do not. I am still new to the game but i have enjoyed learning about it all. Luckly i have a buddy at work that can help me if i have issues. Also you will want a app like titanium backup so you can restore your apps and freeze any bloatware or un wanted apps on your new rom. For example i use google chrome and not the stock web browser. So i just freeze the stock so i dont have to see it. Also make sure you make a back up before you wipe your system just in case something happens you can always go back to the way it was.
I recommend the ics eclipse rom. Have been playing with jekyll but had some issues and went back to eclipse

[Q] [HELP] how to fix my X2's busted software

Hello,
History:
Recently my Droid x2 was acting somewhat slow and randomly rebooting, so I decided to backup some data using titanium backup.
After which, I performed a factory data wipe thing from the android recovery menu.
This went well and I started to restore my old apps and data, afterwards I noticed the same things happening again. So I decided to do the factory data wipe again to fix this.
This led me to think that there was something wrong with one of the system apps, so I slowly went through apps and only installed what I thought I needed.
I ended up repeating this a few times, and at some point used titanium backup to remove some of the stock apps like slacker and youtube.
And now my phone wont get past the motorola logo, although sometimes it does and gets into a boot loop or just gets to the first time set up screen.
History summary:
Basically I backed up the data I wanted to keep, and did some stuff now my phone doesn't function right.
What I am after from any expert is whether or not I can't simply put an update onto my sd card and use the android recovery menu to fix my phone back to the normal stock rom.
If this kind of thing is possible could someone send me a link to the file.
I have tried to use Moonshadows guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1317707) for SBFing, no luck, can't get it to work.
Also, I am basing this question off of Moonshadow's other guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318083) for backup/restoring.
This is a:
Droid X2
Rooted
Running 2.3.5
Moto Updates only work to update, and phone must be complete stock, nothing removed.
to flash sbf phone needs to be in STARTING RSD PROTOCOL SUPPORT
Try ezSBF for dx2

just an update
Just in case anyone is curious, ezSBF worked.
I used it, then updated my phone to 2.3.5, and rooted it.
Thanks shadow.
Your welcome, glad it worked

Help with full reset of Razr

My wife and I both have original Droid Razrs (XT912). We just switched to T-mobile (with new phones) and she was reading about switching phones and she read where you should do a full factory reset to clear personal data...and, she did.
The problem is, I had her phone rooted and have Safestrap installed. So, now we have a phone that is not rooted, but still has Safestrap installed.
The good things are that it is no longer a daily driver and the phone still works fine.
My question: since the phone is no longer rooted (tried VooDoo...no dice...backup was gone), is there a good way to do a full restore of the phone to factory and remove Safestrap, so the phone is back to full factory?
I am including a screenshot of the phone information.
Thanks.
My stock rom on my razr shows I lost root back in Nov but I have cm 10 on rom slot 2 and the root checker app shows full root access but I cant install updates so im interested in a restore also, the droid razr utility was my go to for these issues but ive moved to a new device so im not sure if there is an update

Use Matt's utility. Find it in the Dev section. You can flash stock JB 4.1.2 with it. It will revert your phone to stock.

Factory reset removing TWRP

I have TWRP installed it has been good to me but now I'm having some issues so I'd figure the best thing to do is to completely wipe the phone and start fresh.
What is the best way to do that. I know I will lose root and TWRP but I have no issues with starting over again.
This is a rookie mistake by editing build.prop file without backing it up. My fault and I will remember this but trying to start over might be the easiest. I just can't find the answer if that Restore G3 to stock will get rid of TWRP or just deletes the user data. Luckily I have a TIBackup of all the factory apps and I reloaded them back on.

I'm not sure if the "factory data reset" from the settings menu within android will or not, but the full "reset" with the .tot file and LG flash tool definitely will (I just did this 2 nights ago). Flashing a new rom via TWRP with a .zip file might be your easiest bet though lol.
I did a factory reset the other day but still having issues so I was thinking of just starting over.
I thought about a new ROM too but I'd rather just fix it right the first time. Restoring my data is easy for me so no biggie

True. This could also work if someone has a unmodified build.prop file for VZW?
Anyone?
My concern is if someone gives me a ATT or another carrier then I would be screwed.
One of the purposes of installing twrp is so you can backup to solve problems like this. If your going to perform a factory restore I suggest you pull your sim card and do not connect to wifi. before restore also get copies to sdcard of stump.apk and titanium.apk to freeze system updates. Bump the device and make a copy and you will never have to restore to factory again with the lg app. You will always have a freshstart install.
Yea and that was my mistake. I just forgot to do a backup. I'll be doing that once I get it sorted out.
