Problem when turning Galaxy S2 on it's side - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone.
I have a problem with my Galaxy S2,it doesn't sense when I turn it on it's side, like when I view a picture and turn it from a vertical to horizontal position the picture doesn't rotate to fit the whole screen. The same happens with the camera,it is stuck in a horizontal position .It hasn't suffered any physical damage, and I just bought it about a week ago.I entered the LCD test menu (*#0*#) and checked the sensors, there was nothing wrong,it received data from all of them so I am guessing it has nothing to do with the hardware. With the other functions like panning, tillting, etc. I have no problem only with this one. Will doing a factory reset fix this problem? What about installing a different ROM?

Did you enabled auto rotation?

Do you mean settings>motion>motion activation?
If so then yes, it is activtated.

Silly me,I just realised what you meant by auto-rotation.I must have accidentaly clicked it.To anyone interested, there is an option for auto-rotation in the status bar next to the sound option. Thanks for the quick reply, mods please close this thread.

[Q] Auto-rotate on home screen stopped working

Hi All,
Picked up a new SGT 10.1 today on the Staples deal. Well, actually two, the first suffered badly from the dust under screen issue and I returned it, cleaned out two stores in the process.
Trouble is, after the first time I engaged the orientation lock (literally the first time I locked the orientation), it no longer auto rotates when on the home screen. Worked fine for a couple hours prior to that. When I go to the camera app, it rotates (although lags sometimes, but can't tell the cause).
I've tried hard resetting multiple times with two different methods, made no difference. Searched around, found only one other person describing the problem and no solution.
Has anyone heard of this? Is there any app I can use to further test the sensor?
Thanks all!!
P.S. Sorry for the double post in Q&A, I posted there by accident.
Go to the home screen. Once in at home screen, press and hold anywhere to bring up the screen to add Widgets, etc... Click on the App Short Cut tab and then tap the home scree without actually adding anything. All you are doing is going to the App Short Cut tab. Now when you rotate your SGT the rotation will be much faster.
Try your rotation first before doing this so that you can see the difference in speed.
Enjoy...

Yellow line in lock screen

Hi All,
I have been using my galaxy s2 since last 1.5 months. No issues/errors/defects till today.
Today all of sudden a yellow line appeared in my lock screen. It is horizontal line coming between date and time. This line only appears in lock screen once I unclock my phone then line is not there which means it is not hardware problem. Please see the following pics with line and without line.
Guys, could you please help me how can I remove this line.
Thanks,
JM
have it too. disable the screen lock, then it must gone.

I think it's normal
Maybe you haven't noticed before?

No it wasn't there earlier...

are u sure? i think it was always there, but it could be that you had a darker background for the lockscreen
I'd like to inform those reading this post that I just experienced the same problem as the OP. No way to get rid of the thin line which wasn't there before. Corrupt lock screen wallpaper? I don't think so, since changing the wallpaper doesn't solve the problem. Also it can't be a hardware problem since the thin line appears on the lock screen only. I now notice this line on all types of screen locks (pattern, pin, password).
Hope this helps
It's just a line across the screen. It's part of the lock screen.

I dont have that on my lock screen, can you set the same image as a homescreen wallpaper and see if it also has the same issue? I've got a feeling its a defect or at least a SW issue.
Root your phone and buy widgetlocker....

It is not a defect. My phone does exactly the same. Maybe some FW has it and others don't, but it is not a problem. It is just part of the design of the lockscreen.
Obviously it isn't a hardware defect, since it clearly appears on the pics you posted, and those are not photographs.
It is also precisely in the middle position between the date and the alarm indication, therefore I'm pretty sure it's there on purpose, software coded.
Just a question: are you using the stock firmware / ROM / launcher??? I'm on stock firmware, ROM and launcher and yy lockscreen is far simpler... I just have the digital time and date overimpressed on the lockscreen picture, and nothing else.
I am having this problem as well, though my line is grey. The horizontal line goes from one side of the screen to the other between the date and the alarm time. This line was NOT there an hour ago so we can dismiss any answers like "maybe you just didn't notice it". The only change was that I powered down my phone and powered it on again. I, like most, originally thought I had a problem with my screen but it only appears on the lock screen. I normally use a pattern lock but I checked and the line appears when it is on number lock as well. My wife has never used the lock feature but I set one up just to see and she has this line as well. It doesn't serve a purpose and it wasn't there before, I'd just like to know why it is now. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks in advance.
If You setup PIN lockscreen and then go again to lockscreen settings phone asks You for your PIN before allowing to change settings. This line is there also. It's not a "problem" or a "defect" it's just a part of the lockscreen design. You act like it's some kind of a disaster and huge bug which renders phone unusable but it's just a line separating date from time seen for about 1s when unlocking screen. Do You think there should be a switch do disable every part of android interface ?
Ps. to be sure - I rebooted my phone and this line is there also just after reboot. And this line is not grey - it's semi transparent. I'm certain that in my case it was there from the beginning.
Ps2. look at this or this one - returned by google images for "sgs2 symbol lockscreen" - nasty lines everywhere
If You hate this line soo bad try to prepare wallpaper that has it's own line at this position which when merged with this semi transparent line will become invisible.
This has appeared in mine today. I've also noticed sometimes that the lock screen touch screen messes up occasionally and when you drag between the lock dots to do the pattern; it drops the line drawing after a dot when you change direction.
If I turn off the screen and light it up again then once or twice it fixes the drawing problem, though the horizontal line is still there.
Has anyone on this thread experienced degradation of anything on their phone since they noticed this lock screen line? Want to catch a fault before my warranty runs out (if there is a fault!)

[Q] Auto rotating for a second then back to normal when screen blanks out issue

Hi i have a problem with my S3 where, say i was typing a text out or on an app. The screen goes into landscape for a split second then goes black and then back to normal. This happened on my first S3 then i went and got it replaced and it does the same again.
I haven't a clue why its doing this i have auto rotate turned off and it still does this. Has anyone else came across this issue?
Im running 3.7 Wanamlite Rom with Siyah 1.6.8 kernel.
i tried moving to checkrom v5.5 HD and the problem happens on that too. I cant see it being another faulty phone seeing as only a week ago I went and got it replaced with another brand new RED S3.
I hope this is an easy fix cause really does get on your nerves when screen does this and i know its not normal or could it be just an issue with JB? thanks in advanced.

3rd galaxy s3 and still having this issue. Its the red model. It was working ok then out of the blue the phone would act as if its opening a landscape app and then reverts back to normal. this is really annoying as sometimes wen unlocking the phone it rotates to landscape and i have to lock and re unlock to get it back to normal. This happens even with auto rotate turned off and motion disabled.
is there a way to test and see if its a certain app thats causing this? cause no way 3rd brand new galaxy s3 and having the same issue. Thanks

[Q] screen turns off when touching sensor next to front camera

hi all
i have spent almost 2 days for an answer , no luck
my problem is
my phone s3 lte . screen turns of as soon as i obstruct the front camera and the 2 sensors area . it was ok before , since few days it started doing this . now i cant take screen shot pictures by moving my palm across the screen for example , not sure what this is due to
any help please .?
You've posted in the wrong section, questions go in q&a section -those for the i9305 stand more chance of a reply that won't brick your phone in the special q&a for LTE phones.
Report your own post and ask for it to be moved.
Having said all that, you've probably got a corrupt framework or a hardware fault. Flash a fresh official stock rom after a factory reset to test. If it's still the same then send for repair.
Is this when in a call sorry to ask noob question just curious if your covering the proximity sensor

Screen Blanks out on Galaxy tab
I ran this test and your screen is only supposed to change color from white to green during the test. My screen blanks out completely during the test.
Not sure if the sensor is bad or if it is a software or and OS issue yet.

Need advice.
I just received a SM-T705Y, KitKat. When I am in only some applications not all, the screen shuts completely off when my finger passes over the two sensors/camera near the word "SAMSUNG" at the top of the device. I have tested the cause and done it repeatedly by putting a small piece of black electrical tape on the sensor.
With the tape on the sensor, the screen never shuts off. The screen then will come back on several seconds after I remove my finger/tape from the sensor. Also, I do not have to actually touch the sensor to get the screen to turn off. But it activates the lock screen when it does turn off. ANNOYING !!!
My SM-T705Y is not rooted. It is in developer mode.
I think its the sensor that turns the screen off when you take a phone call is still stuck on ???
I have the phone proximity sensor turned off in: Settings> When I'm the phone screen The screen stays on.
Auto adjust screen tone : ON
Auto brightness is off
I have the "Smart Stay" turned off in: Settings>Device>Display.
Screen timeout set to 10 minutes. Screen mode set to "AMOLED Cinema"
I have restarted, not rebooted the SM-T705Y

The proximity sensor is located there. That's why you have that issue. It's normal behaviour.
If you are trying to turn the screen off during calls there is an option to do so in either calls settings or display settings.
If you move the phone away from your head it will turn the screen on. It's a proximity sensor, thats its job!.
Beamed in by telepathy.
Fix
I have same problem with my samsung and I fix it!
Just close all recently used app (press button next to menu button and close all) and you will have normal screen..... Looks like some app, especially call app make problem and activating proximity sensor. So one more time close all recently used app, press button next to menu button and close all app....
Good Luck!

Cannot pull down notification bar anymore (only in portrait mode)

I was on MM 6.0.1 (existenz rom) and since yesterday I cannot pull down the notification bar anymore. This only happens in portrait mode. When in landscape mode, everything is fine. I thought that was a software issue, so I went back to stock MM 6.0.1, but I am still having the same problem. I looked for cracks, but could not see any.
Another odd thing is: When on lockscreen, I can pull down the notification panel.
Any ideas?
What did you do before this thing happened?
Shoot photos, but apart from that I didn't use my phone much in the last couple of days. I am on a trip right now, so I didn't install new apps. I did some offline navigation and messaging when on WIFI. The last app I installed was Cisco Anyconnect to set up a VPN network with my university. But after the installation of that app, it still worked. At least for some time (2 days or so).

Might have dropped it or slept on it, BUT: When in landscape mode the area on the left (where the notification bar is when in portrait mode) seems to work. I tracked the touch input via dev options and it recognizes the touch right to the edge of the screen. Additionally, when on lockscreen (and no pattern or PIN is set) it seems to work, too. For me this is an evidence that the screen works fine. But when I do the screen check with *#*#7378423#*#* it won't recognize any touch input in the upper area of the screen.
