[Q] screen turns off when touching sensor next to front camera - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi all
i have spent almost 2 days for an answer , no luck
my problem is
my phone s3 lte . screen turns of as soon as i obstruct the front camera and the 2 sensors area . it was ok before , since few days it started doing this . now i cant take screen shot pictures by moving my palm across the screen for example , not sure what this is due to
any help please .?

You've posted in the wrong section, questions go in q&a section -those for the i9305 stand more chance of a reply that won't brick your phone in the special q&a for LTE phones.
Report your own post and ask for it to be moved.
Having said all that, you've probably got a corrupt framework or a hardware fault. Flash a fresh official stock rom after a factory reset to test. If it's still the same then send for repair.

Is this when in a call sorry to ask noob question just curious if your covering the proximity sensor

Screen Blanks out on Galaxy tab
I ran this test and your screen is only supposed to change color from white to green during the test. My screen blanks out completely during the test.
Not sure if the sensor is bad or if it is a software or and OS issue yet.

Need advice.
I just received a SM-T705Y, KitKat. When I am in only some applications not all, the screen shuts completely off when my finger passes over the two sensors/camera near the word "SAMSUNG" at the top of the device. I have tested the cause and done it repeatedly by putting a small piece of black electrical tape on the sensor.
With the tape on the sensor, the screen never shuts off. The screen then will come back on several seconds after I remove my finger/tape from the sensor. Also, I do not have to actually touch the sensor to get the screen to turn off. But it activates the lock screen when it does turn off. ANNOYING !!!
My SM-T705Y is not rooted. It is in developer mode.
I think its the sensor that turns the screen off when you take a phone call is still stuck on ???
I have the phone proximity sensor turned off in: Settings> When I'm the phone screen The screen stays on.
Auto adjust screen tone : ON
Auto brightness is off
I have the "Smart Stay" turned off in: Settings>Device>Display.
Screen timeout set to 10 minutes. Screen mode set to "AMOLED Cinema"
I have restarted, not rebooted the SM-T705Y

The proximity sensor is located there. That's why you have that issue. It's normal behaviour.
If you are trying to turn the screen off during calls there is an option to do so in either calls settings or display settings.
If you move the phone away from your head it will turn the screen on. It's a proximity sensor, thats its job!.
Beamed in by telepathy.

Fix
I have same problem with my samsung and I fix it!
Just close all recently used app (press button next to menu button and close all) and you will have normal screen..... Looks like some app, especially call app make problem and activating proximity sensor. So one more time close all recently used app, press button next to menu button and close all app....
Good Luck!

Proximity sensor

When I'm in a call and put the phone to my ear the screen does not turn off instantly. Only after the screen timeout period has reached does the screen goes off. Is this normal?
Hello, and sorry for my english, i have the similar issue, when i put the phone on my ear the screen continue on, only in a few second appear lock the screen. I have another issue: the ambient senson, in darkness and sun light the automatic brightness doesn't change the bright of the screen, only when i enter to the brightness settings and change the bright automatic off and on go right, i believe that is problem of the firmware, my firmware version is the spanish vodafone version. Can i change to the generic firmware via Sonyericsson Update Service software??

I don't think the proximity sensor would switch off your screen instantly. It will ignore all touches to the screen so you wouldn't touch something by mistake. The screen will be off later. Can test it with your fingers on the sensor during a call.

I did that. If the sensor is blocked with my finger or ear the touch can't be used. But the screen turns off quite a bit later than that. I think it's the same screen off settings that you use normally when the phone is unlocked and you don't lock it.
I've notice that my sensor doesn't seem to work. Under the brightness option if I check the "Adjust automatically" the screen still does not adjust the brightness. Also noticed the screen goes dark a minute in on a call, when I move it from my head it does not go bright. Sometime I have to unlock screen if call is longer than a few minutes.
Yep normally proximity sensors (on Nokia, iPhones..etc) turn off the screen immediately when ur face is close. Some examples:

Yeah, that's true. But I know that mine works! It's just not turning off the screen. Don't really know if it's supposed to do that though. But I think so!
Just spoke to vodafone and they are sending me a replacement tomorrow.I doubt that will sort the problem. But its worth s try!

The Proximity sensor works fine. However it works differently from what you would expect:
-When making a phone call the sensor detects your big head and locks the screen (put your finger near the sensor to try it, you won't be able to push any buttons on the screen).
-It only locks the screen. The screen turns off after some time.
-When the screen is off during a call and you remove your head (or finger) from the sensor the display turns on again.
Works fine for me! Don't kill SE because they do it differently then other manufactures, it works just fine.
Well I wish I could disable the proximity sensor right now.
I am trying to make a call without my big head bloking the proximity sensor, as I need to dial a number get trough the switchboard. (right now its lying flat on my desk while I am dialing.. So no head at all, just roof)
and the screen is still locked so I cant press the number 1.
The strange thing it worked when I called SE support, but it doesnt work now.
But right now when I need it, it does not work.

That is indeed strange. I've just tested it several times:
Make a call> Let the screen turn off>remove from my big head>screen turns on >screen is unlocked and I can acces the 'dialer'.
Well as I wrote, sometimes I can do it sometimes I can't.
I will try to clean the proximity sensor (right side of the Sony Ericsson logo)
the next time it happens. Maybe its to over sensitive.
Right now it works to the same number I was trying earlier..

Is it right to assume that the auto brightness is controlled by the proximity sensor. When I change my screen brightness to auto. It goes dull and stays dull.

[Q] HTC Amaze Screen Goes Black After Ending Phone Call

I have Speed Rom 5.1 on my Amaze. When I am finished with a call, the screen stays black. I try to hit the power button, but nothing happens. I have to remove my battery in order to reboot. Can someone shed some light on why this happening? I am thinking that it may have something to do with my CPU Tuner settings, but I am not sure.

Probably that or a bad flash, just reflash, see if it solves the issue.
Most likely it's something simple, like an issue with your proximity sensor. I know there was an app that could calibrate that but I forgot what the app was.
Stock Rom - Black screen while phoning
There is a similar problem on my wife's phone with a stock rom (not rooted Amaze from T-Mobile). When making or accepting a call, the screen will instantly go off even without leaning the phone against anything and won't turn on unless the power button is pressed. Sometimes the screen would turn on by itself after a while after the other phone was hanged.
I've downloaded AndroSensor app: the proximity value does't change even when touching the area near the earpiece. It keeps showing ( 0.5mA ) 3.5 in.
I've found a thread which is there since april 2012 and describes quite a similar problem.
okay.. i just the original post date for this thread.. please don't bring back threads that are 6 month's old which issues might have been solved already since no ones been posting in it for 6 months...
(anyways) this is what i was gonna say
on my current s3 when my phone is placed to my ear it cuts off the display.. and if you pass your hand anywhere near the sensor's to the top near the camera it cuts off the display.. maybe there's a feature like that enabled on the stock rom also.. or you could possible check with the system settings to see "screen" on/off settings in display or power saving mode.. or something...
Thanks for the answer. I didn't notice that the thread was that old. I think I will keep up a newer one. But the current issue isn't likely to have been solved.
The problem doesn't seem to be triggered by wrong sensor measures (because the screen will go off even after disabling the sensor) nor does it depend on the rom version (same thing on the CM10).
Resolved:
It will sound stupid but I have found a simple solution:
I have just wiped the screen in the upper left corner where the proximity sensor is located and it started behaving normally. Though I don't use any protection tape on the screen it seem to have become less sensitive because of mud or sweat.

Maybe its a hardware defect?
Try to disable somehow light sensor and change settings to non auto brightness.

i disabled auto brightness and set the brightness to the highest level. But its still same: very dim and after a while a black screen; after a few times of unlocking, the display works normally
I have just seen the same issue on a friend's S3.
Anyone else? I feel like this is a very big issue that is still lurking in a lot of devices.
I tried it myself and I toggled the power button to turn the screen on and off.
It doesn't take long but sometimes when the screen turns back on, it's super dim and you can faintly see the lockscreen image.
You have to cycle the screen several more times to get it to the 'correct' brightness, and no it is NOT a brightness setting.
It's some hardware issue in the phone.
Sorry for the necrobump, but I only found this thread. I have this problem too since about a week back. It makes my phone useless at times. I first thought it was a software issue. I have an app (called Twilight) for dimming the screen more than normal settings and also toning it, for nightime use, and I thought that was the culprit first, but nope. I have flashed rom, recovery, wiped all caches I can think of. Still happens, just now I was in the middle of installing android revolution hd, and the screen ultradimmed on me so I can't finish the process
Thing is, a few months ago I managed to crack my screen by way of gravity and concrete. I let the samsung brand service centre in Stockholm repair it for me (it is out of warranty) and this issue with the dimming never happened before that. Then again, it didn't happen directly afterwards either... but still. So, I am thinking: either me dropping it caused more damages and this is because of that. Or the service center did a bad install of the new screen. Or, the replacement screen that was installed has a defect in itself. I am leaning a bit towards the third explanation... maybe different batches of screens?
Does anyone have any ideas? If I am to contact the service center and complain about their work I would like to be able to point towards a "known problem"...

Take it back, if it didn't happen before then the new screen is most likely.
It isn't a common problem

Problems with screen during calls

Hi.
Bought a S2 a few days ago and flashed 3 roms. (ressurection remix - pacman - jellybam)
In everyone something happens quite annoying.
When I press DIAL to make a call, the screen goes immediatlly off.
Then I'm forced to press the home button or power button to get the screen on again...but as soon as I try to get into the call screen (to use the dial for example), the screen goes off again! The call is still active and I can speak in normal conditions, but I'm unable to get into the call screen!
What may be causing this problem? Is it possible to be a proximity sensor problem?
It's starting to p*ss me off a lot!!!!
Some of those symptoms are the result of the proximity sensor in the device. Read about it in the manual that came with your phone.
Sent from my digital submersible hovercraft.
I think you missunderstood me... This is not my first S2...or first Android device.
I've had S2, Arc S, S3, etc...
I know how the proximity sensor works...
What is happening is that the sensor turns off the screen regardless of having something near by or not...
Therefore I'm never able to use the dialpad during a call or even see the hang up button...or the duration of each call.

Strange. Maybe the sensor is faulty or it's a software glitch. Did you try to reinstall kernel/ROM?

I would suggest typing *#0*# in the dialer, clicking "sensor" in the menu that comes up and test the proximity sensor. If thats fine, I'd suggest a softeare fault.

[Q] LG G2 D802 problem when making or answering a call

Hi guys.I have a problem with my LG G2 D802.When I answer a call or make a call, the screen goes blank and the touch doesn't work anymore.I can't do anything else on the phone. The conversation is normal and anything else seems to be ok.Please help! Thank you.
If I answer a call, the screen goes blank,I can speak normally:After the call even the other person finishes the conversation,I still can't do anything on the phone, because the screen stays blank. If I have another call this will awake the screen and it will work normally,I mean,I can take the call, answer and speak on the phone but with the screen blank again. and so on.To have the phone back to normal,I have to reboot it by switching the phone off and on again. Very strange. This happened after I unlocked the phone ,probably because I left the SIM card in ?!!! Any possible advice/solution? I tried soft and hard/factory reset with no results.

I actually had this same issue. my g2 is rooted, but running the stock rom. it has a screen protector but nothing else that would impede the sensors.
I found that this issue never took place in well lit areas. but if at night sitting i a poorly lit room I would go to swipe the scree it would unlock for a second or two and then lock back up. in talking with a friend. I found that the g2 has in set so in the proximity of a pocket or something dark the screen dims back so as to not allow you to mistakenly hit ay button ( i.e. butt dial) i figured my proximity sensor near the ear piece was dirty and causing much less light then there actually was. at the time there wast a firmware update ( which I have now gotten) and was desperately seeking help.
I finally got the firmware update VS98012B and it seems to have solved the issue I ( and you) was having. I would see what version you are running now and then update to the aforementioned and see if that solves your problem.
PM me and let me know what road you decide to travel and if for some reason it doesn't help you we shall figure it out.
Blank Screen
I am having sort of the same issue. But mine is wether in a well lit room or dark room it doesn't matter.
I noticed that it usually happens when i receive a call, after the conversation when i hang up it does not go back to the home screen. all i get is a blank screen. the only way i can get it to generate the home screen again is by pulling down the status bar and going into the general settings and clicking home button again.
during this blank screen i can still see the status bar, and when i bring down the status bar i can see the nav buttons but they are unresponsive.
I also noticed this takes place sometimes after closing an app (noticed on netflix)
I am rooted on stock rom and TWRP recovery. Phone Model [LS-980 Sprint]
I immediately rooted so dont know if issue was there before root.
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.

I decided to open the phone and check the proximity sensor.I unplugged the proximity sensor ribbon and guess what:IT WORKS.without the functions of the proximity sensor and LED.But at least,I have the keypad and the screen on during a conversation.I have even the knock-knock function.Probably,I will use it like that until a kit-kat update will be available. Thanks for your answer.
VS980 Black Screen
I have a customer phone that I replaced the LCD and Digitizer on. The new screen works fine but...now when a SIM Card is in the phone and I dial out a thin horizontal line appears in the middle of the screen and then the screen goes black.
If I remove the SIM card and place a call, the phone gives me the standard "Emergency Calls Only" and goes back to the dial pad.
The SIM Card is not activated but it is recognized by the phone.
Has anyone else had this issue? I tried a factory restore with no luck.

Hi,
I have the same issue , my screen turns black when calling or receiving calls , i m not really good with my hands... so do you know other solutions to disable the proximity sensor ?
thanks
Same issue here - LG G2 screen turn off and goes blank during conversations
I have exactly the same issue - LG G2 D802 screen turn off and goes blank during conversations.
Thanks to @Bam9 and @EtherBoo , who suggested to clear the proximity sensor from the outside and squeeze the top left corner of the phone, I tried to clean it and put some stress on it - and it worked!
Another issue which I also have and is also caused by the proximity sensor is that the screen stays on and the touch buttons in the dialer aren't responsive - which means we can't switch to speaker, add a call, mute, etc... However, the main touch / navigation button (home, back and menu buttons in the bottom of the screen) are responsive, in addition to the status bar.
(This issue was already reported by @athorax here)
In both of these situations the only quick way to end a call is to pull down the status and notifications bar and hang up from there.
I have a glass screen protector (which don't block the proximity sensor), and I am rooted and using CyanogenMod 11 ROM.
I used ioroot to root and AutoRec, which comes with TWRP 2.7.0.0, to install CyanogenMod ROM.
However, going back to stock ROM (in my case, LG G2 D802, it's D80220C) won't help since the issue still exists.
What I'm sure is that it was pretty much okay in the beginning, and the situation became worse and worse - occurring randomly, until it arrived to a situation in which I can't use the phone properly during conversation.
Now that I discovered that I can put some stress on the proximity sensor it seems that I have a hardware rather than a software issue.

We already have KitKat based firmware update. For me it's D80220C.
For you it might be already D80220D. Use this link to check your version, and replace the IMEI in the end of it with your IMEI.

When you place the call you do hear that the call is made?
If so - then you have exactly the same issue.
What is your model, what ROM are you using, and did you root your phone?
