Hey guys, just a little tip I had thought up, last time I had looked into protecting my phone and screen.
I recommend OtterBox Defender Series for overall maximum phone protection.
Problem: Plastic screen gets scratched, damaged, etc. and then you have to fork out another $30-$50 for a new case.
Solution: I recommend an Invisishield be installed to the exterior of the OtterBox, thus enabling it to protect that plastic screen protector. When the Invisishield becomes too dirty, scratched up, or damaged, just go to a kiosk in a mall and have them replace it (I believe it's only a $5 fee, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
TIP: If you lose the receipt for ANY Invisishield screen protector, just show the kiosk employee the screen protector, and point out their patented technology. They shouldn't have an argument there, and should be able to replace it for you at the normal cost.
Anyone come up with a better phone/screen protection strategy?
Best is the "rubber only" Otter Box case. Comes with the rubber cover screen is open then add a stick on protecter. I have abandoned the battery door altogether.

Seems like a good idea I just ordered a 3800mAh extended battery. Perhaps your idea will work for that case mode. Will let ya know
Its great. I took a small pair of scissors and cut out finger space around all the buttons. I cut the button overlays right out. Its the one that is the rubber case only.

you do know that when you buy an otterbox you get a lifetime warranty right?(part of the reason for higher cost)
not many people realize that all you need to do is call them, and tell them something on the case broke and they send you a new one, (I don't know if scratches on screen is covered, but you could always tell them the plastic is coming loose, or one of the clips on the hard case snapped) not sure how many replacements they allow, have to look up full details on the warranty
but I have also thought about putting a screen protector on the outside, just never have (mainly for anti glare)
something else I SHOULD have done was cut a little piece of screen protector and place it over the camera lenses cover, it kinda frustrates me that not more phone producers don't drop that back a little so that it isn't flush with the back case, cuz as soon as you place it on a table and it gets slid around a bit, boom, scratches all over the glass in front of the camera lenses(otter box protects this from happening due to its design tho)
I used nushield and it works really good.

Do you have to verify a proof of purchase. I don't know if I have my box anymore, let alone the receipt? I'm sure if I look hard, it's somewhere around my house. I still haven't called since some guy stole my phone. I'm going with "the two clasps that held it together broke off and the rubbery outerskin is falling off". I wonder if that'll fly.
yes, all you ahve to do is call them and let them know you are missing a peace and they will send you the piece.

I honestly don't know the RMA guidelines for Otterbox. I have since upgraded to a Trident Electra Case, since it comes with an extended battery. I emailed the company, explained my situation, and because I purchased directly they were able to look-up my info (Lost receipt) and have sent out a free replacement.
Trident Electra Extended Battery Case for DX & DX2
As I mentioned above, I now use the Trident Electra case. Here are some pros/cons...
Pros:
1) Extended Battery - 'Nough Said
2) HIGHLY Durable (Dropped from 3 levels of scaffolding in construction area - No Damage)
3) No Overheating - Issues that have been somewhat documented with some Otterbox models
4) Well Made - The materials and design are great!
Cons:
1) Belt Clip - WILL break in no time, with very little pressure
2) Camera Lens Protector (Separate self-adhering plastic film) - Is tinted blue and will turn your photos blue if flash is used.
3) Kickstand - VERY hard to open and is easy to break off from trying to open/close it forcefully.
4) Case is hard to open and could've been designed better in this aspect.
I HIGHLY recommend this case as it gives you the protection you'd expect from a sturdy case from Otterbox or Trident AND it comes with an extended battery which practically doubles battery life! Just make sure you spend the extra cash and buy direct from their website. It has a lifetime warranty and if you lose the receipt, they can lookup your info.
This phone doesn't need any of that crap.
Seriously. I tried to destroy mine one day and all i could do was crack the digitizer. I wanted it to die (well, at least the individual I was talking to at the time, but by proxy)
Mine flew off of a ride at the fair and noting happened at all. And i didnt have a case on. True story
I have a screen protector, and a hard back only case by, Qmadix It works really well and only adds a little bit to the phone its self.

Does the Invisibleshield cover the whole phone or is it just a screen protector?
It covers pretty much the entire rear and the screen. There is no cover for the 'frame' of the front.
IMHO It's very tough, quite tricky to put on the back (of an XDA Mini S with textured surface) and would have been better if it covered the exposed front parts (but I guess the various button and LEDs get in the way).
Re: Does the Invisibleshield cover the whole phone or the sc
The Invisible shield comes in two styles. One is for the whole phone the other just for the screen. I have a Cingular 8125 with the whole phone style. The kit comes in precut pieces which you apply to various areas of the phone. So it offers a fair amount of protection but does leave some gaps. The screen cover is the best I have ever used.

I had also seen these on Ebay and was wondering if anyone had used it.
The "infomercial" has sold me on it, but I really wanted to get some opinions from others who bought it and used it before I took the plunge.
So, even if just the screen protector does the job, it would be money well spent??

Yes, the screen protector is worth the money. I would suggest buying directly from their website. They do not charge for delivery as they do on ebay
invisible shields are THE BEST screen protectors hands-down. I have been using them for ipods, cameras, and all my phones. It's always the first accessory I buy. I'm using one on my 8125.
Easy to put on, doesnt scratch, STRONG, and wont leave a residue if you choose to remove it- which you never will do and it will never come off, either. Plus they have a lifetime guarantee. Highly recommended for any gadgets.
Best piece of gear hands down. I have the "Full Body" on my 8125 and just a screen protector on another. I bought direct since I live here in Salt Lake City, UT. As for somebody saying it never comes off once it is on us untrue. Just respray it and carefully lift an edge and it will come off.
RE: Does the Invisibleshield cover the whole phone or the s
I just tried to put mine on today, and it didn't cover the entire screen. It's like alot of screen protectors that I've used in that it leaves a 1-2 millimeter gap around the edge. I decided not to use it, and opted to use my WriteShield screen protector that I got from PocketPCTechs. I've tried their AG and C* (clear) screen protectors, and the C* screen protector is the clearest screen protector I've ever seen. And it cover the entire screen of the 8125.
Having said that, I went ahead and put the rest of the InvisibleShield protectors on the rest of my 8125 and I like it. I've got and IS on my IPOD also, and it does a pretty good job.
However, removing is does leave some residue. Like the one for the 8125 the IPOD version comes in multiple sections, and I didn't like the placement of a the pieces that go over the circular sections of the IPOD, so I decided to remove them and maybe try to re-apply them. When I pulled them off, they left a gummy, glue like residue. I did manage to clean it up with some GooBGone. I'm not sure if I'll be able to re-apply those pieces or not since they are not "clear" any more. Maybe there's a way to wash them or something to clean them up.
I may have done something wrong (and if I have, someone please tell me what it was cause I realy like the IS for my IPOD), but I couldn't find anything on their website which gave any instuctions for removing.
Does the 1-2 mm gap around the edge really make a huge difference?
RE: Does the Invisibleshield cover the whole phone or the s
It does to me. Invariably I would always slide of the edge with the pen. Plus it's kinda noticible when you look at it. It's more of a personal thing really. If you're OK with it, then I think the protector that comes with the IS would be a really good one. I just like to have to whole screen covered.
You do know you can order the IS a custom size to fit your needs.
Here's my review of the Invisible Shield, which I installed onto my 8125 earlier this week.
The quality of the material is excellent. I have no doubts this will save my entire phone from bumps and bruises. However putting the stuff on left me hating and liking it at intervals during the "ordeal". Unless one has steady hands and lots of patience it would be nearly impossible to put the pieces on without getting your finger prints on the underside of each piece. The adhesive is seriously good.
I did manage to get all the pieces on, after about 90 minutes. I did have to rinse the screen cover several times in order to clean the underside of smudges left by my fingers. I also had to lift a corner once to take out a bubble that just would not come otherwise. Even at that I was not impressed with how the screen looked immediately after applying it. But now, 4 days later I have to say that the claims of the bubbles working themselves out over time are entirely accurate. The shield is now crystal clear and undoubtedly a good protective device.
The material also has the characteristic of making the phone very grippy. I like that about it. What I don't like so much is that there are many pieces, and you can feel the edge of each one when you hold or handle the phone. This is because the material is thick, and that helps to provide the protection, but it takes some getting used to. The grip can be felt when using the stylus as well, but fortunately the digitizer on the screen is very sensitive so a light touch works well, and this minimizes the drag created by the material.
My final impression is that the kit is worth the money. It will protect the phone from all but the most careless handling, or serious accident. It is nearly invisible and makes for a better, albeit edgy, grip. I wouldn't want to apply it again, but then I shouldn't have to given its toughness. Perhaps next time I'll pay someone else to apply it for me. ;o)
Invisible Shield
FYI. I purchased mine (full cover) for my 8125 at a mall kiosk. They guy asked me if I wanted him to install it as it is tricky.
I have little patience for such things (like airplane models), so I had him install it for $5 extra.
It was WELL WORTH IT!!! The install was top-notch and I am very, very happy.
Could someone post the picture (front, back, side) of the MDA or 8125 with invisibleshield in it. I know that it might be difficult to see it clearly since the shield is almost invisible. Could someone put some arrows in the picture on where the shield is applied. I would like to see which area gets covered before buying it. TIA.
I contacted the seller and asked for the picture. But they don't have it.
Also, once you apply the invisibleshield, can you safely carry the MDA naked in a purse together with all kinds of stuff such as keys, pens, notes, etc?
I'd like to see some photos as well

Yea me too but looks like nobody has any picture worth looking
So when I first received the new Seidio Convert Case, I was pretty excited. I thought it couldnt get any better then the Active case Seidio makes but I was wrong, dead wrong. The Convert case is practically two cases in one. It’s a Seidio Surface, with an add on silicone inlay that goes over that, and then an exoskeleton that goes over that. O and if that isn’t enough, you’re getting a waist clip, which your phone goes into for easy access, and a Seidio Screen Guard. Providing the maximum in protection, this case makes the Otterbox weep in shame. I used the case as a the Surface case first for a day, and it is great, its light weight, easily removed and provides just the right amount of protection for the light weight and little size it adds to your phone.
The silicone overlay, covers all the ports to the phone, headphone jack, speakerphone, and volume rocker. The only access that is open to the elements is the screen and camera toggle switch. Even the back cameras are protected by a silicone cover, that covers the cameras while not using and while in use, can be clipped into the case, keeping it from moving around. Now I know most people have problems accessing the ports, while the are covered, but these port covers have little grips on the outside so you can easily pull them up from covering the ports themselves, this makes access extremely easy and quick. Now my biggest gripe with the Otterbox is that the covers for the ports always ripped or tore off within the first week, but with Seidios silicone there is no sign of ripping or tearing in sight, which is a major plus! This only confirms in my mind the quality of Seidio’s products.
The waist clip/holster is another bonus, once the phone is clipped into the holster, you can lock it in, so no matter what you cant unlock it, providing you with the comfort that the phone isn’t going to pop out, like so many of my phones have down before. This clip, on top of the surface, silicone and convert skeleton makes this case the most rugged and provides the most protection, the best of both worlds.
The screen guard on the phone, which no matter what, I always buy for my phones, is amazing as well. Clear and smooth as glass. Covers the whole screen including the four home buttons on the bottom, which the Sprint OEM guards don’t do. I really like how the screen guard covers the whole screen, because unlike most cases, the whole screen is open for use, none of it is covered from the case itself.
Since using this case, I have dropped my phone twice and unlike other people’s reviews on the Convert case for other phones, the exoskeleton is still in tack with no sign of abuse. My phone is completely scratch free, like I expected it to be.
However, after that, I used it as the Convert, and have been for the past week, and I will never use another case. Although, the only two down sides that I have with this case is that it adds a little bit of size and weight to the phone. But for the amount of protection you’re getting in return, it’s a fair and well worth trade. The second downside, which isn’t even that big, but, should be noted is that the silicone inlay does attract a little bit of lent, while in the pocket. besides that, I really see no downside to this case.
I would have to say after using this case; I would give it a 9.9/10. And would highly recommend it to anyone I know!

This case is retailing for $69.99 with the holster, without the holster it costs $49.99. For the protection your giving your phone its totally worth it.

It's the same thing. I bought mine at BB but it didn't come with a screen protector which was fine with me since I'm a fan of InvisiShield. I wish that it did come with a holster for the surface case though.
Good review!
That case is worth every penny.
Best prices I've seen
This is for the convert combo like the review above:
http://www.amazon.com/Seidio-BD4-HK...9LR0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311006177&sr=8-1
and this is for the convert combo value pack:
http://www.amazon.com/Seidio-BD5-HK...9LPC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311006177&sr=8-1
What makes the value pack different is that it comes with an extra surface holster so if you wanted to, you can rock the covert/holster for max protection or roll with the surface/holster for less bulk. Depending on what protection or mood you are in for the day.
For a couple of bucks more I went with the value pack. Oh and this bundle also includes 1 screen protector.
btw, nice review.
So after looking and looking, I finally decided to drop the $59 (shipping from their site is free) and get the Gumdrop skin case. I found that I was leaving my tablet at home all the time because I was worried about dropping it, and by the time someone makes one to satisfy my needs to work with the dock too, I'd be looking for another tablet.
So I picked up the military one, in the green from their website. I figured if I didn't like it, I can easily return it.
Item showed up today, they ship Fedex Ground if anyone is wondering, and I ordered it last Thursday. The packaging it comes in is pretty damned sturdy. I'm usually anal about protecting anything I buy, and the packaging it came in was probably a bit overboard.
Getting it pulled apart to get the printed insert out of the actual case was impressive in its own. NOTHING is going to hurt your tablet in this case, other than if you stepped in the middle of it.
Anyways, I wanted to get this thread started, so I can answer any questions folks have about this case. I just got it a few hours ago, and will do a short review this weekend, and a longer term review after a month or so. I'll get you some pictures too of all the parts and how it goes together.
A few initial notes.
1. This thing is THICK.
2. When I opened it, my first thought was, "Get rid of the integrated screen protector". I decided to pull it out, then put it on top of my tablet to see if you can use the touch screen with it on there (it is a "hard" screen protector). The screen picks up your movements PERFECT with the screen protector in place.
3. All cutouts are perfect.
4. The entire device is covered
5. The thick silicone rubber exterior has a hard plastic skeleton that you snap on over your tablet. Then you stretch the exterior over that.
6. The screen cover has a hard plastic frame that snaps into the skeleton, from the INSIDE.
There is no slack, no wiggling, and once you get it in place and push all of the locking tabs from the exterior through the skeleton, it looks like your tablet was BUILT this way. Amazing.
My only cons so far...
1. I wish the screen cover snapped in from the outside. Not that I'll ever probably take it off, but it would be nice to have the option.
2. No kickstand. With the plastic skeleton, I see no reason they couldn't have integrated a kickstand like the Incipio cases.
I am still holding out hopes for someone to make something like this that leaves a option to connect your dock. A detachable cover at the bottom and a matching case for the dock would fix it all.
Also, I'm kind of surprised no one has a dock to tablet extension cable yet. That would actually make this really nice. With a kickstand.
LOL
Okay, I'll get more info soon, get me your questions if you have any folks.

Amazon has them - http://www.amzn.com/dp/B005FVDVIW
And the manu page - http://www.gumdropcases.com/tablet-cases.html
I can't really tell the difference between the military and regular ones - I'm eyeing up that red/black model. Thanks for the review.
If they made this case that fit both the TF and dock, i would buy it
Is there any kind of buffer between the hard plasktic screen protector and the screen? My experience with hard plastic screen protectors is that sometimes small objects or dirt gets caught between the screen protector and screen. With use this trapped dirt starts to scratch the screen. You might also consider getting a stick-on screen protector as well.
I saw a review where there was a question about how this case might make the device retain heat. Do you notice any overheating?
i have the same case and think it is build like a tank and everything the OP says it is. i have not noticed any overheating at all. a lot of people were saying how ugly it is, i think it is really cool looking in person, i have the same OD green military version

My priorities for selection was protection, functionality & "looks". I doubt I'll invest in the keyboard/dock; I'm essentially wanting a larger smart phone, LOL
My only nit with it...is the images make the green look more pastelly versus a darker tone...which IMO, is more in line with a "military" green. But I guess the tone makes it a bit more fashionable. I can live with it.
Great lil review. Thank you for reaffirming my choice.
So i have read rants on the Z1 having self breaking glass, and alittle on the ultra. Most of the threads on the ultra though have been, slight to moderate abuse (sat on)(backpack of stuff) causing breaks. Not the classic Z1 of "took phone out of front pocket". My normal routine is only having the phone in my front pocket when going from my desk to the car. Other than that its on my desk or left in my car (i hate walking around with a phone in my pants).
Mines coming this week and i kinda want to take some preventive steps, and wondering if sony really is replacing "not blown to bits" screens under warranty in at least the USA.
I hear it comes with a factory "screen protector" that you should leave on, and put another screen protector on top of it. Is that true or is the factory protector just the stock "tabbed" film that should be removed right after opening the box? I have a front/back screen protector coming, but wanted to know if i should peel off the factory one first.

one year in, and no glass breaking
your routine won't break the phone, i'm sure
screen protector, i have one on top of the anti shatter film provided with the phone, both front and back, and both scratched to hell, but too lazy to replace
Definitely put a aftermarket screen protector over the anti shatter film. The ASF is too soft, but is a pain in the arse to remove by all accounts
I've had my ZU for about 9 months now and have dropped it 3 times onto concrete, once without any screen proctor or case, the other two times has been with a wallet/flip case. The last time I dropped it the case even broke - still the screen is intact.
I too thought it wont happen to mine, till it really did, of course it's not self breaking glass for no reason, but more likely the most logical reason I could think of is, the stress accumulated from the daily use, a bit of pressure while in pocket, or backpack, along with the heat / cold temperature, whatever other bull crap from regular use, over a period of time, that stress cause the glass to be broken.
I pretty much babied my Z Ultra, have back casing, Glass M on the front, Skinomi on the back, never dropped, all in like new condition. Then last Sunday I was on my bike ride, put it inside my backpack, along with my wallet, then couple hours later, took it out from my backpack only to find the glass, under the M Glass screen protector, under the original ASF, has a hairline crack, and pretty much as good as brick, since it wont register any touch, I can see a call coming in, but cant answer it since the display doesnt work.
OP said it happens with Z1, I read that it happens with Z2, and it happens with my Z Ultra, so I think it's just something on their glass quality along with their full glass design, it is impacting a small number of them, not all, just small number, but still the problem indeed does exists.
But I still buy another Z Ultra in a heart beat without much thinking, as a matter of fact already got another one from expensys, with the price is so cheap now, the smoothness, the crisp display, the waterproofness, it still worth every penny.
Mine broke in the pocket, and so did others.
It can break. But with that said, the risk yours will break in the pocket with no abuse is small.
Sony aren't very consistent in handling these cases. Sometimes they get it fixed on warranty, sometimes they're not. But if you get a first negative answer just send in a complaint and they might turn around (as in my case).
I just got mine back. I had the asf removed on the previous one, I'm not taking it off now. And I'm doubling up with tempered glass protectors.
i personally recommend removal of the anti shater layer, if you live in humid climates, as it can cause the residual moisture and oils from your fingers to cause key presses. i had a bad issue with this till i spend an hour with a razor blade removing it.
some people also claim that removing the layer voids your warranty, but i had the phone replaced about a month back with my extended warranty and had no issues with replacement regardless of having the film removed.

i live right on the equator, and have not had any problems with this (i also use a screen protector on top of the antishatter film). do you mean to say by removing the anti-shatter film, the glass doesn't pick up any fingerprints and oil? a screen can only be oleophobic for so long.
To those who have had the screen crack in their pockets: were you using a hard case to provide rigidity to the device?
I also just received a Z Ultra and read through the massive threads on Sony's forums on these problems. It just seems the device is so thin it has too much flex in the pocket. I'm even hesitant to use the leather flipstyle case if it doesn'tt provide enough rigidity.
I'm thinking maybe the aluminum bumper case with GlassM protectors on both sides would work nicely together. Hopefully the aluminum won't degrade the signal quality too harshly.

Those hair thin aluminum bumper cases wont do squat, the thick glassM m shields wont do squat. The device is just too long and think. Your best bet is to treat it like a full size tablet. Dont sit with it in your pocket, dont put it in your bag without being in a separate compartment. The poor thing is like 1/4" thick and made out of aluminum and glass. I still dont know why they choose this glass. I can take my droid incredible with gorilla glass and pound the screen on the corner of a desk over and over, no scratches. This sony phone just doesnt have any flex for the glass.
I just through an iLLumiShield on the front and back so i can throw it on the table and not worry about scratches.

But if flex is the issue then wouldn't a solid metal frame that doesn't bend around the perimeter of the phone rectify such concern?

Yes but the aluminum bumper case is very flimsy stamped aluminum. You would need something with zero give like aircraft grade. An aluminum or plastic shell would be the way to go, but That bumper case is just to prevent chiping of the sides, and give a mm lip when laying the phone on its front/back.
I just use a rubber back cover and THAT'S IT. No problems for me. And yes i keep it in my jeans' pocket most of the time. It does hinder my movement a little though

The better way to deal with the size is not to put in jeans pocket. In winter, jacket pockets I guess are ok. In summer, I guess the best way would be to buy a camera bag or something for this. I think that would solve this problem.
I just got the phone and I am kinda surprised to see how thin it is. Definitely not a phone you should stress too much.
I did receive this case from Roocase in return for providing a review. That in mind, my initials thoughts were that although it was packaged nicely, in a static-free bag, it looked kind of cheap for the price range (the actual price on Amazon, not the price I paid)... I removed the case from the package and the journey to actually get the case apart and installed on my phone began. Like other reviewers, I had a heck of a time getting the case taken apart and then actually installed on the phone. It took a little bit to realize that you needed to install the front on the phone first, then snap the back into place. To be fair, with a little practice, the installation is not too difficult. A week in, it is still quite tough to remove the case.
I was using this case after using Spigen Slim Armor case. My big gripe with that case is that the buttons are almost impossible to differentiate without looking at them, and I find myself adjusting the volume when trying to wake the phone from sleep. This is definitely not a problem with the Roocase. The button covers are large and well textured. No problem there.
I also really liked that I could see the back of my phone through the polycarbonate back. Nice touch Roocase.
I have never been a big fan of built in screen protectors. I have already installed one on my phone, and while I haven't had the problem of my existing screen protector peeling off at the edges, I have noticed a decrease in the sensitivity of my screen, and I don't like the feel of the plastic screen protector built in to this case.
The port covers are a nice touch, but they are really difficult to get open. The USB cover also tends to cause some of my looser micro-USB cables to fall out while charging (like the one on my car charger), which is a pain. It also increases the security of the connection for some of my cables, so it's kind of a mixed bag there. After having them open for an extended period of time, the covers tend to stay open for a while, and I wouldn't be surprised if the problem only gets worse over time.
The case does seem to be built like a tank. I wouldn't be even remotely worried about dropping my phone with it in this case. I have used an Otterbox Defender on previous phones, and I would rank this one just as high on the protection level spectrum.
Overall I like the case. I like the flat back sometimes, but sometimes I do get a little annoyed by the above niggling issues and go back to my Spigen, or my CM Naked Tough case. If you need something that is built like a beast and like using the Otterbox Defender, then I would recommend the case. Otherwise, I would have a hard time recommending it at this price point ($19.98 plus free shipping).
I gave this 3 stars on Amazon.
Love the pictures.
Pictures? Huh?
