[Q] Nook Root Guidance - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hey guys need some nub help.
Im always confused on here, too much leet speak about coding and stuff of that sort.
Anyways, i have my Nook tablet rooted from when i bought it (thanks to all of you) as of Dec 20th. Anyways i spent the last few months in Afghanistan, now i have come back and my nook updated to 1.4.2. Now i spent a few hours reading the forums and cant find what i need to fix it, everything seems so complex. So can someone take my little hand and guide me to what i need and what i need to do.
Thanks for the help..

Take a look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488035
It makes use of an SD card image to root your tablet. Or another option you have is try roll back to the 1.4.0 firmware and reroot like you did previously.

You can use the NT Hidden Settings app to blpck the OTA iupdates from happening next time. You can find it in Android Market / Google Play. You can also find a link in the XDA thread in the Nook Tablet forum.
The NT Hidden Settings app does much more too...

[Q] Honeycomb Nook Tablet SD Card

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone has got the Nook Tablet to run Honeycomb off the Micro SD card. I have found many places that show how to do it with the Nook color, but I have tried a few different ways. No luck. I don't know if the Nook tablet doesn't boot from the SD card by default, or what I am doing wrong. I have just enough knowledge to follow directions to try and honeycomb. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I have a nook tablet that I rooted using the directions found on this website.
Thanks!

The Tablet has a signed bootloader that has not been successfully conquered yet. You really should do a little more research before you blindly follow internet instructions.

Thanks for the response! I did research the Nook Tablet quite a bit before I tried doing any changes. I have rooted a couple other devices, and the first thing I look for is how to undo anything I try. In my research for running Honeycomb on the Nook Tablet everything I found, was one way or another, a link back to the Nook Color. Thanks again for for the response!
While I do love my Nook Tablet, I loathe the app market it has. I look forward to the day when someone breaks this beast so we can install a clean android base on it. I think the NT with a clean unmolested base will freakin rock.

Fingers crossed as well...
Also Love my NT!
I also don't think that the devs will ever release honeycomb for your nook touch, since the ice cream sandwich source is already out

I think some people who are newer here get confused. While I do agree that research should be done before posting, the fact that if you google Nook Tablet, you get results for "Nook Color Tablet" included in the results, which confuses some people. It would have been nice of B&N to call it something a little more distinctive, such as Nook *____* where *____* is anything other than the word "Tablet".
Also, the fact that Nook (Simple) Touch also exists, people get confused by NT as seen in another post in this thread. However, being as this is the Nook Tablet forum, that shouldn't generally be the case for most.

Nook Tablet Super Post - Reference Thread

Hey everyone, I figured I’d start this thread as a one stop shop for anything major related to the Nook Tablet. Use it, like it, hate it… it’s up to you. I’ll add more as they come out. I’m going to put this in the General forum since it’ll contain a little bit of everything. I'll clean this up as more happens but for now, it is what it is. Oh, and if you don't like this post, go somewhere else... no need to hate in here.
General Information
Wallpaper Size is 840x1024
Press N and volDown for a screenshot
Amazon App Store will only download apps to an SD Card.
Factory reset - Turn off, turn on while holding N
Factory restore - Power down, then power up and interrupt boot cycle 10 times.
The Nook Tablet can't connect to Ad-hoc networks so if you're trying to wireless tether to your phone, go to /system/app and remove tetheringmanager.apk. Then go to Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile AP and use the stock program. I tested it with my NT and a Samsung Infuse and it works.

Redundant information. People should learn to use the search function that is in the upper right corner of the page. That is what is wrong with society today. They expect someone to hand them the answer.
Wow. The air must be thin up there on your high horse.
Sorry, but i don't agree with your position on this. Search can be very clunky and you may have to wade through pages to find what you need. And a relative noob like me needs to know WHAT to search for. I find this post to be pretty useful and I applaud the OP for taking the time to do it.
Searching is good, but I appreciate one stop shops. Good effort.

Whoa, throttle back a little hwong, he's just helping people out.
When I bought my phone last year, it had already been out for 6 months. And when I looked to learn about rooting, I was a year behind the development crowd. It took me two months to sift through 12 months of threads to gather all the relevant information.
We need a reference thread so that us little people can come along and find all the up-to-date information. You know as well as I, hopefully, that in 6 months much of this "redundant information" will be out of date information and we need a way to keep it straight.
So thank you spoland.
Uphill both ways in the snow!
Seriously, the problem with search is that it only works if you know the answer! Really.
Posts like this should be stickied. Good work.

I know a lot of the cell phone threads have them and even though we're not super far into pushing what the Nook Tablet is capable of, we'll get there eventually and this is a great starting point.

Does anyone else think it ironic that hwong96 comes to XDA to get answers that are pretty much handed to him? Did he have to do the work? No. Someone else did and he was spoon fed the answers. Yet for some reason, "Mr. Whats Wrong With The World" here feels that having a thread like this will destroy the world. Seems every single device has a thread like this. Information is fragmented. Its a good thing to have it all in on place.
Here's a suggestion. Instead of capitalizing on the world of XDA developers, figure it all out on your own. No teachers. No Schools. No books - I guess having knowledge in books will destroy the world also. Just get a device and figure it all out.

Maybe hwong lives in a Fahrenheit 451 world, his info is orthodox and ours is heresy. That reminds me of how Steve Jobs operated.

Sure you did. You were born into the world with knowledge of how Andorid works. Must have been a long flight in your space orb from planet Krypton there Indirect. I realize you rooted a NT at a B&N location. Still you had to get some understanding of Android from someplace. If you can look at a device and know exactly how to root it, then where is my unlocked bootloader, tuff guy? [and before the little indirect groupies jump all over me for daring to talk to you in such a way - humor people!]
A couple odds and ends that might be useful:
Wallpaper size is 840x1024
Press n and volDown for a screenshot.
The amazon app store will only download apps to an SD card.
How to sideload apps: http://liliputing.com/2011/11/how-t...ok-tablet-amazon-appstore-go-launcher-ex.html
App Manager makes it possible to add sideloaded apps to the stock app and home screens. (Someone linked to their copy here, but maybe it should be uploaded elsewhere as well.)

Haha, i was kidding. I did learn in silence for a year before i started being a dev so yeah. I learned from somewhere. Most of it was self taught through experimentation also, good job on making me laugh.

This is no longer available . Now if we need to unroot, how do we do that? Other than doing a factory restore...
It might be useful to add info on how to do re-image/factory restore: here and here.

Unroot application is back without the issue of having another developer make it. You can just thank me this time around. But yeah, I recreated the app and now it even reboots properly.
The first post needs to be fixed. It mentions a factory restore as power off then power on + hold N. That is actually factory reset (data wipe) and is not a factory restore.
Factory restore is power down, then power up and interrupt boot cycle 10 times. This takes it back to a stock NT. I think people need to know the difference as a factory reset does not fix most problems people are having, whereas a restore does.
And, would be good to have a thread like this stickied

I considered putting the link to 2nd-init in but because it will only help a smaller portion of ppl in here (primarily devs), I'll leave it out for now.
Added adhoc wifi fix to the list. If there is anything else major that I am forgetting, please let me know.

Rooting, unlocking first timer - did her homework now needs help!

So um, I posted this a few hours ago waaaaay up in the VERY general Q&A forum but now realize I can and should have put it here. So here goes:
I've read all the rules, terms, threats about what happens if you don't SEARCH first - guys I've done it all and for a long time. I have been studying up on how to root / flash my MoPhoton 4g since I got it last August. I think I'm finally ready....but now I'm afraid I'm too late. I got involved in that soak test, which installed 2.3.5. Now, if I've searched/read acs and xda correctly (and other less intelligent sites), here's where I think I am:
1. There is no way to downgrade from 2.3.5
2. Shabbypenguin's wonderfully simple and sweet One Click Root won't do the trick on 2.3.5 (and boy did I try it MANY times). Had correct drives installed, etc...but no go. I assume you guys know what I'm talking about, but I can and will paste what the script read if you need me too. Short story...got all the way to "you should have root"....but I don't.
3. Currently the only way to do it is with a root method called Torpedo....which I don't know enough about yet but I'm about to get into it... I am nervous though. Since I'm a rooting virgin I would MUCH prefer something easy like OCR.
4. And finally, even if I get root, I won't be able to unlock bootloader, again, because of 2.3.5. So no flashing anything at all (had been planning on cm7 or 9) to replace the stock OS.
Sound about right so far? If so, here's my big question:
If I can ONLY root for now, will I obtain ANY of the benefits I am looking for (mainly increasing/unleashing the SPEED I know this phone is capable of)? Also, I'd like to get free wireless hotspot too, cause if you're gonna dream, dream big.
2nd question: If all the above is correct (and I'm hoping it's not), are the odds decent that one of the geniuses around here will solve this bootloader problem sometime......soon?
Thanks in advance for any help guys!!

Yes, you are correct that you can root with photon-torpedo, but will not be able to unlock your bootloader, (for now). I just did it a little while back, and found that using terminal emulator didn't work on my phone, and had to push the .tar file in using the command prompt on my computer with the instructions I got from here.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. When you say "a little while back" you mean when exactly? Your link was an active thread 10 months ago but it's now abandoned and the links don't work. Not a big deal tho, I know where to find torpedo.
Any help out there from a senior member or mod? Most specifically about my last two questions...

Root will allow you to use root apps, access file systems, and yes let you use the free wifi hotspot. You could also clear out the bloatware that Sprint/Moto load your phone down with. It will NOT allow you to overclock(although you DO need root you also need a modified kernel which isn't possible with a locked bootloader) Rule here about bootloader unlock of 2.3.5 is don't ask for ETA's so it may be tomorrow or may never happen. Realistically im sure it will come eventually but can put no accurate time frame behind it. Torpedo is really a walk in the park, just read through instructions and follow them and it will take you no more than 10 min.
Torpedo Root, universal deblur/debloat and zepplinrox V6 supercharger. You may not get overclocking but your phone will be significantly faster/smoother than stock.
Awesome, thank you! Hope to report back soon with successful results.

You should be able to use the bootstrap recovery to flash a rom, this won't touch the kernel, so no over clocking, but i imagine that most of them are already debloated with the supercharger script (dont quote me on that one). So there are still ways to play around with a few of the roms here anyway.
Hope that helps.

trouble with tgps launcher/usb debugging

I rooted my Nook Tablet in early January from the XDA site and following Albert Wertz video from that time frame--worked like a dream---HOWEVER, the system froze up the other day and i inadvertently set the darn thing back to it's original state---the problem i am having is when i go to the XDA site to root it (where the three links are), the usb debugging will not open up---it is the one for the tgps launcher---I am new to the forums and this site will not let me post the link that goes with it
I have tried over and over and on the nook and two other computers--I have tried to search it on google and such and everthing takes me back to the same XDA site
I know there is now an SD card available but I really like the OLD way---i just feel comfortable with it
I sent an e-mail to XDA regarding what i thought was a bad link but they said it was not their area and to look for help in a forum---perhaps they misunderstood me or they were correct
Can ANYONE help me re-root my Nook Tablet using this method with a good link---thanks so much
i googled it...
how about this link
http://mirror10.downloadandroidrom.com/file/NookTablet/rooting/tgps_launcher.apk
Will try it
thank you...the site looks familiar but i am going to try it now...will let you know how it goes...thanks again
A million thanks
a million thanks just is not enough---i downloaded the link on my tablet and it worked without a hitch!!!!!---you are the best!!!---thanks again

[Q] Lots of thanks and 1 question

I have been reading a lot post here and while I had just ordered a new tablet I decided to give rooting my Nook tablet a try. I wish I could remember everyone's name here to thank for thier post and help. But I ended up using so many different posts as I stumbled my way to success. So can I please just thank everyone who helps here and the Forum for being here? I did achieve success...which for myself was a great feeling. So I sent back the new tablet and kept the Nook.
One question when I use Goo mgr and up date to a new nightly I always have to sign back in and replace all my apps onto the Home screen . Is this normal? I have to go through all the updates of the different apps etc. Do you have to update every cm nightly or just once in awhile? Thanks again for everyone here.
I don't use Goo so I don't know about that part but you certainly do not have to update all the time! If you're happy with the way things are running, just leave it alone. Maybe read change logs to see if there's anything there that sparks your interest.
Sent from my BNTV600 using Tapatalk 4
Thank you... shows what a noob I am didn't think about the change log. Also I guess I placed this in the wrong section should have used the Q&A trouble shooting one....sorry about that
