I really dunno if i'm doing the right thing or not. I'm moving on from an HTC sensation with all the build quality and the sense UI glory; the company has to offer! To a sony xperia S
No doubt the phone rocks with mind-blowing specs :
amazing screen resolution,
advanced camera and finally a dedicated button for it,
an hdmi port,
thank god a usb on the go
and the long awaited nfc option for android
the drawbacks are not that fussy :
no sdcard (handling with built in internal memory avoids lags)
unremovable battery (i guess u change ur phone more often than changing the battery)
port covers (get used to by time)
camera very near to edge (hold the corners when taking pics)
power button near to earphone jack (use ur left hand to awake the device when connected to earphones)
what really concerns me is that sony ericsson devices never attracted me and a lot of people, is it because of the looks? durability? service? the dull timescape UI????? smartphone community interest in comparison with other lines like htc and samsung???
I know sony has divorced ericsson and it provides a new attitude, but the background..... u know what i mean?!
I just need assuring words for me and all the people out there thinking about this change!!
You can't go wrong with Sony phone it has the best speaker phone, phone ringer is loud does the function of a phone well aswell of a smartphone and PlayStation I have bought one in fact I have an iPhone 4s ,galaxy nexus ,Xperia play and a blackberry curve and the best is the Sony
Thanks
Sony/Ericsson never needed the best hardware to make their phones fly. And don't say anything about Timescape, at least in the opinion of a lot of people, it's FAR better then Sense (which I think is crap).
Sony don't need to appeal to giantic screens, or use a fake Beats (which improves a little, but not as much as xLoud), or use AMOLED screens (Bravia provides better colors, AMOLED have yellowish images), neither the best hardware., but they really know how to optimize their software to their hardware.
And, the best thing of all: The best designs. Nothing beats Xperia Arc or NXT Series design.
Sent from Xperia X10 Mini Pro using ICS by paul-xxx
I guess sony problem is perception.reviewer aren't too kind to sony.sony itself have apple "we know what best for you attitude" rather than giving what customer wanted.they won't use bleeding but buggy new tech.and sony sure as hell won't give u all thing in one, even for flagship.the arc have no ffc, sxs don't have white magic.
hardware wise its usually little bit better than the last iphone n nexus..thats turn a lot of people off..why buy single when u have dual core last yr.and why buy dual when u could get quad core this year.(but nvr realised all those power are useless as android os n apps can't utilities it)
What make me coming again n again to xperia is
1) it a phone..it primary use is to make call..however only Motorola n sony have exceptional call quality
2) its a multimedia device. Most important arescreen, sound and camera. Its where the xperia come 2nd to none.(don't know why people find multimedia device with ****ty sound and oversaturated screen is appealing.)
3)design:hardware n user interface have to look good..htc,sammy hardware and touchwizz n sense are damn to ugly for my taste.
4)support:sony are the only company that will upgrade all its 2011 phone.not three out of thousand of galaxy..and it support for developer is good..yes.there's a lack of developer for xperia device..but at least their rom work and aren't wayy too buggy.

I came from a Samsung Galaxy S and while the samsung hardware is nice their software is terrible. You really need to tweak a samsung phone to fix the bugs or perform acceptable. Even the SGS2 has buggy stock software imo. With my xperia now I don't have to tweak to get good performance. I only miss root to remove some minor bloatware, block ads and restore backup.
Never had a HTC device because they were always mediocre and I don't like sense. But the new one x does look nice but is expensive and big. And the one s has little storage, lower resolution and a pentile screen. After the pentile screen of the sgs I will never take pentile again .
So my experiance is positive. Stock it runs better then the samsung phones. And in my opinion the ui looks much better then sense and touchwiz.
I think the lack of popularity in general is because of advertising, at least here. I see a lot of htc and samsung adds but no sony ads.
But you should try it out at a store and see if it fits your tastes.

I had SGS 2 before i moved on to the sensation by the way, i dumped it coz i really got fed up from its software in spite of it being a really nice handset in every aspect!
I totally agree about the advertisement part! They should give a great deal of attention to it!
By the way sense is awesome, it's just bulky on a limited ram, but will miss it when i shift to the SXS !!
i changed from sensation to sgs 2 to lg p920 none of those were usable on stock for me, the sensation was ok but the camera ... seriously they call it a camera ? and the sense sucked most of the resources (ram/battery)
i was waiting for the SXS and am truely happy i did cause the phone experience is amazing and am still on stock , no root no custom rom, just stock as good as out of the box and the phone is flawless,
the camera takes amazing, sharp pictures without flash at the darkest nights
the battery lasts for more than a day for me with edge on/wifi on for the entire day with several calls and some casual gaming
and let me tell you about the screen, this is a piece of art, i love watching pics on that screen, its sharp, crisp and colors are amazingly perfect
as for the music , the sound is crisp and clear threw the stock headphones which i like more than any of my previous phones
i even add full HD movies on my phone and connect it to my TV threw HDMI cable and watch it , its fast it doesnt hang which is great and does the job right
plus in gaming am enjoying my old nice games like lane splitter and angry birds space/fruit ninja which runs pretty fast and no lags at all
the os itself is not buggy, i own the phone for 15 days now and i didnt encounter a hang or a bug yet
so i would definitely advise you to swap to one of those
After buying the SXS, I must say IT'S DEFINITELY THE RIGHT STEP!!!!!
Build quality is magnificent, stock software is superb and overall performance is outstanding!!!
Wow!!! Never expected it to be that way!

Amazing phone
Sounds crazy but I am really happy there is no extra sd card slot, as this almost more than anything else is the reason why everything slows down. I do not need all my pictures movies and music. As soon as I take a pc or video it's uploaded to my sftp server and dropbox so always have copy. So with everything stored on the Internet ( no minor not the cloud just the Internet) local storage is not an issue.
Its why more devices are moving away from the sd cause of serious drain on resources especially if apps are moved to sd card so temptation is removed >:~}

I totally agree with the fact that sony doesn't do much advertising actually closer to nothing where I am... But this sets it apart from all the other manufactures and gives individuality to sony phones i.e people who have sony phones.
It's my first Sony smartphone, but i am more than happy of the choice i've made. The software it's so perfect that you really don't need to install anything from the market (i mean tools) The only thing i'm not so happy about is the usb port door...i'm afraid that in time it will break down and after that it will not have such a nice aspect, but if this will happen i will try to find a solution. I adviced already 4 people to buy this Sony smartphone (3 already bought the smartphone...1 to go ) and now i'm thinking of taking a Sony Tablet S gift for my girlfriend birthday. I come from HTC Desire HD and i've made this update because i needed a better camera...and i have to say that this Xperia S camera just blow all my expectations...just WOW !

Okay guys i'm coming towards the end of my contract and will soon be saying goodbye to my beloved Hero. I have short listed either the:
*HTC Desire or *Samsung Galaxy S
Both have amazing specs and the price's don't bother me.
Can anyone help me sway towards one of them! With reasons
Much appreciated
sell the hero and buy both of em.
I am in the same boat as you. I am sort of inclinded towards the Samsung, purely for the following reasons:-
1. Dedicated graphic chip
2. Super Amoled
3. lighter, thinner and battery suppose to be awsome.
4. 2gb rom
5. Source code freely available.
6. Its not HTC - something different.
Possible downsides of samsung
1. Some GPS issues?
2. Touchwiz seems a mixed views.
3. No LED flash
4. No trackpad
5. Seems samsung doesn't have a good track record of updates (ie behold)
gsmarena is usually good for comparing
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3115&idPhone2=3077
Frankly, i went the logical way and got myself a Desire, but soon realized i rather have a smaller phone and ended up with x10mini which does 99% of what any other android phone, but weights half as much and takes virtually no space. So may be give it a try or wait for sony x8.

Thanks for the respones guys.
@silver2kgti
Haha I wish! If only the Hero sold for a bit more...
@tweedie
I agree the dedicated graphics chip and amoled screen is the reason for my debate!
IMO Touchwiz is inferior to Sense but i'm using LauncherPro atm anyway and yea the lack of flash is a disappointment but apparently it has nightmode and daymode
that actually makes a difference?
@pulpoff
What were your opinions on the Desire? Much the same as the Hero except improved hardware?
actually, I went a head and got myself a samsung galaxy s. and over the moon with it.
It is indeed a really awsome screen, bright and clear. not slow at all, and the boot up is literally seconds! battery life is surprisingly good. Touchwiz isn't too bad actually. some software on there is a bit pointless (like social hub that simply connects to the webpages, Daily Briefing seems american webpages and can't change it). FM radio isn't bad either - still have to connect your headphones but it can play through speakers.
Its incredibly light and thin. It does feel plastiky at the back, and cos its so thin it feels like its gonna break!
So far, the downside is that the GPS doesn't seems that accurate or fast. side by side with htc hero - hero wins.
Hey guys, Since ATT just got the X10 I was wondering which is better. My contract expires in a few days so I have some time to see which I like better. Right now I'm using an iPhone and hating it. I want something with android.
I love SE, I bought an original X1 right out of the gates, so I'm leaning a bit towards the X10 but I'm seeing that it might not have any additional benefit over the Captivate other than the awesome camera.
Help please? I travel a lot and will be going to college soon so I need a phone that will keep up with me, all day.
why not the EVO 4g? much better than both, but if you don't like that one go for the captivate
ATT is the best around here. We literally get full bars everywhere lol! Ok, so that's one for the Samsung...
If you're going to be using your phone outdoors a lot, get the X10. Samsung has the better screen, but it's OLED so when you're outside, it maybe really hard to see. But X10 screen is good as well. If you're concerned about aesthetics, I think X10 is the best looking phone there is, otherwise go for the Samsung.
The x10 is a great phone but if the captivate is anything like the galaxy s then i would go for the captivate.
i am also looking at the two phone and also iphone 4 when my contract is expiring.
Things I like about the sony is the physical call and off button. Also, I think the phone has higher res camera and also 2 camera.
I think captivative overall has a better hardware: 802.11n, larger storage space, better music playback software, bluetooth 3.0. android 2.1
I know sony will upgrade to android 2.1 or maybe 2.2 and samsung is coming out 2.2. So I think the software is not a major issue now.
hard to make a choice between the 3 phones.

Once they reduce that capital letters SAMSUNG logo in front, I'll recommend it. But for now, I'll say go for White X10, cool design...
No its Super AMOLED and its very visible outside in bright sunlight.
To the OP, just determine what you need in a device and use them both in the store. For the record, the Captivates GPS is broken and there is no camera flash. The Captivate has features that the X10 doesn't have. However the X10 will receive some of those features in a future update such as 720P video recording and Android 2.1. The Captivate has these features out of the box. My advice is to do some research online and dont rely purely on our recommendation.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
the only thing going for the Captivate is the screen...and only when viewing media or playing games etc. As for reading text, the X10's screen is much sharper. The build quality is much higher on the X10 too, the Galaxies get scratched real easy, just read some reviews. For me, the Galaxy Captivate/Vibrant looks like it's trying to be an iPhone which is blasphemous in my opinion lol. Not to mention the fact that everyone in the world will own some form of the Galaxy in the coming months. So if you want to have a unique and very stylish device with amazing hardware, definitely X10 because after the 2.1 update (hopefully Froyo eventually too) the software side of things won't be any different...otherwise you'll be left with a scratched up iPhone wannabe.
Thanks for the advice guys. I played with the X10 and I was very impressed, I guess ATT only offers it in black (sorry man), but I agree it looks damn fine. The camera was awesome and the media features were great. But the thing that sold me was that everything is solid and doesn't feel cheap. Just like my X1i, everything felt good, not gimmicky like my iPhone or the Captivate. I asked the guy in the store and he said go captivate but I real liked the x10. The screen in the cap was almost obnoxiously bright and the icons were cartoonish and silly.
Now, my only concern is android 1.6. Rumor is it'll be updated, but for the next month or 2 can I survive with it? I used to be a WM junkie, but lately I have been spoiled by my iPhone so I don't know how android works :/
BTW, the north American version doesn't have 2 cams, only 1 and there isn't a physical call button. But atleast there is a camera button, I loved that.
well i do not know of any X10 with 2 cameras
I don t get this GPS problem, I dont have it on my Galaxy S, why don t you bring the phone back for repair? (or have you tried that already)
i guess I was wrong about the camera.
Based on what I read, 2.1 is coming soon and Sony may even jump to 2.2 but you never konw. Loosk like manufacturers are a bit slow bringing 2.2 to the market. it's quite surprising to see Sony has not yet release 2.1 or 2.2 at all because Xperia was out like last year as oppose to Captivative that was out reently.
it seems to me that a lot of these phone, the softwrae is wehre it sets one from another. Samsung did a decent job with captivate so is Sony. But sony really neeed to get 2.1 or 2.2 out so it can really take the power of teh hardare.

Lot of people are complaining about the GPS problem or low build quality of Galaxy S
Lot of people are complaining about low sound volume in call of X10.
You don't have problems with GPS.
I don't have problems with my X10.
This means this problems are not there?
Well, I bought the Captivate on day 1. I had to replace it on day 3. I just returned it on day 29 and picked up the X10.
My observations on the Captivate:
Great screen
Thin design
Junky buttons (don't like soft buttons so much)
Junky PC software
Serious Lag and general OS issues
The GPS is currently broken (does not work 100% as it should)
My observations on the X10 (2-days in):
Great screen (once you disable auto brightness setting)
Great looking (IMO)
Great buttons
Great media player (on phone)
Great companion software on the PC
I haven't really noticed any lag (either on the stock or unbranded ROM)
The GPS works amazingly quickly and accurately
The bottom line for me, and the reason I returned the Captivate, is Samsung has no real history of resolving issues with devices once they are released. I am fairly confident they will resolve the GPS issue but not so confident they will resolve all the other issues plaguing the device. Random resets, inability to wake the phone from a sleep and mysterious shut downs all happened to me. I also had problems with the battery and I just wasn't feeling too warm and fuzzy about Samsung. It's a shame really, it could be a great device. They also used some abnormal file system that is apparently the biggest cause of all the lag on the device.
The Sony device, on the other hand, seems much better thought out and seems like it will last longer as well. The screen is close enough between the two (for me anyway) that it's not really an issue. It's nice having the light on the camera because I can use it with a flashlight app. The additional fact that the PC companion software is so much better than anything I've seen for Android is also reassuring. It seems to me that Sony did a much more thorough job in the R&D stage and Samsung just designed a product that looks good on paper. I am very glad that I returned the Samsung device for the Sony.
BTW, I am not a Sony fanboy by any stretch of the imagination. I just honestly feel like it's the better device overall. It was a very difficult decision to return the Captivate as it does offer some very impressive specs, but in the end I need a device that is reliable and works.
a quick question for anyone who has used both phone, how are the mp3 players on either phone? Can you import your itune playlist without any issue? Also, can you see the lyrics like what you can do with iphone/ipod?
I am considering consolidate my mp3 player (ipod touch) and phone so I am hoping for one that will do everythign I can with my ipod. I konw iphoen does it but I am looking for options.
I really like XPERIA, Captivate looks cheap to me and I don't recommend.. yeah Android 2.2 will be nice on xperia .. hope Sony updates soon

I didnt have the problem with the low income volume of the X10 after the update .23 either...
So finally the galaxy s3 is here. What do you fellas think of it. Please share.
For me, considering that I took no notice of the over hyped rumor mill that preceded it's launch, its a great phone with a few decent new features like s voice, s-beam, eye tracking, etc.
Although these features I suspect will have very limited day to day application, they're still nice to have and show Samsung to be at the vanguard of new innovations. It also feels like an ICS phone which sadly the HTCs do not. Maybe something to do will the 3.0 kernel.
The processing capabilities are very impressive with a buttery smooth user interface and silky scrolling. In terms of speed, it obviously won't feel much faster than most multi core devices but it's smoothness is unrivaled.
An 8mp camera and the absence of a hdmi port is rather disappointing but not crucial. It's design will not please all. Let's face it, no design pleases all.
Given a choice today between it and the xperia s, I probably would still go with the xperia because it has the hdmi port and better quality display but I hope the ICS update improves the UI performance and scrolling. Without improvement in those areas, I might find myself beginning to regret picking the xperia.
I thing user experience counts for a lot and a jerky and even laggy experience is quite frankly in my opinion, beneath a 2012 phone.

Compete fail just a slight incremental update at best to GN and It looks butt ugly, like an old plastic mid range Nokia, screens to big for most ppl, also uses touchwiz, phone will only be good for 10 mins of benchmarks and that's it. Enough said.

Not good and pretty enough. I didn't regret buying SXS over the One series and still I don't regret buying it.
And seriously. Pentile display in a flagship phone?
My thoughts?
I couldn't care for it really...like all the other phones out now besides the Sony line, its...blah...
Nothing appealing to the eye :/
They should/could have made it better, all bark and no bite.
....next!
Meh. Looks like a Galaxy Nexus 4S. A bit more screen, a bit more CPU power, a bit of this and a bit of that. Lots of gimmicks that you're never going to use - the best are wireless charging and S Beam ( which is most likely SGS3 to SGS3 only ), though the latter can and likely will be implemented in AOSP or forks when someone gets their hands on the actual device and explores the protocol, or maybe even earlier without Sammy compatibility. Lots of even more gimmicky accessories (spebble). Ugly ugly ugly ugly UGLEH body. Battery hog (quad-core x AMOLED x front camera always on aka Smart Stay - wireless charging = fail ). If I had to choose between my Desire and the SGS3, I would pick SGS3. But my XPS does everything I need so I won't be getting that thing ever.
@OP Sammy never was the innovator in the first place. Almost every single killer feature they have is either vanilla ICS or already exists in some form.

I think it will do much better than that. Credit where credit is due. It's the best performing phone right now and I just hope ics improves the ui performance of the xperia s because it's the poorest part of the phone. It's pretty fast and instant everywhere else but the UI feels very 2011 possibly even 2010ish in its performance which is a damn shame.
Well lets keep hope alive even history tells us that software development has always been one of Sony Ericsson weaknesses.

The thing is smoothness to CPU power is not linear. Having four cores doesn't give you an instant boost and a buttery smooth UI. This 'lag' is the way Android works and the great multitasking power we are used to might not have been possible without it. The rest is manufacturer optimisation. And yeah, quit whining about smoothness. Try ICS on a G1 and you'll be happy about how smooth your UI is on any other device.

It definitely fell short.
I think too many people hyped it up.
I know that many Samsung fanboys are upset. I was on another forum and after the unveil all I heard were complaints.
It is the new performance benchmark though.
However, it's too freaking big and the design is ugly.
Can't wait for the Sony Hayabusa to mop the floor with it.
and just one more thing, MEIZU quad core is most powerfull phone on market this year...
Samsung isnt top BEAST out there...

I don't think I mentioned CPU anywhere in any of my posts. The UI performance of the xperia is the poorest of all the new phones out right now. It's as quick as any if not faster at performing tasks. Could be something to do with the very graphics intensive nature of it but I think it's performance is not quite 2012ish.
Let's not turn this into a fanboy topic. It's not a major crime hoping for software improvements now is it.
I did not believe any of the rumors that followed the Samsung so I'm not surprised in any way by it's spec sheet.
Those who were expecting 1080p displays and all the rest of it were just living on another planet. You can't expect too much after just a year after the release the S2.
Can we not discuss the positives and negatives of phones without reverting to all the tribal nonsense.

Then you should ask this question on general android forum section....not in SXS section...we are with reasons on SXS, reason to buy it, to keep it and reason to develop it.
We do not need any other phones on this part of forum if you ask me..
but you asking in wrong places....
that is like a blog of iPhone ask that about SGS3....LOL
Seriously you think that big egg is very beautiful??
I mean you're joking right!you know I even had second thoughts of buying HTC OneX,
Then again thank god that I didn't go for the Tegra 3 chipset cause nVidia has some issues with HD video playback and which snapdragon doesn't have at all.
and I even noticed that XPS is very responsive and smooth,
I seriously don't care about the faster performing tasks, only thing that bugs me is the yellow tint that I got, which is a pain in the ass when it heats up.
and even though samsung tried too hard to put up their new phone and they failed to beat up iPad's GPU which is sad for them,
technically I don't regret having this phone and I really love the timescape UI and I think they will do something new with their ICS update,
cause they always the first to come up with new ideas and others tend to copy it from them.and I love the fact that they are keeping up with snapdragon chipset.
I know nothing much about nova thor chipset though..
GS III is an epic failure to me and I'm looking forward to get this hyabusa with S4 chipset.
the funny thing is that after GS3 the very next day LG comes and anounced a BEAST phone with Quad core chip,1,5ghz,4,7 inch screen with 720p display 32gb internal with micro sd support,LTE and the best thing 2GB RAM which Samsung already has 1GB AGAIN with GS3..i love galaxy s2 but galaxy s3 dissapointed me...i own a Sony Xperia S now and i am very happy with it..after the Samsung Galaxy S3 event i trade my Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Sony Xperia S because Samsung made me mad (seriously PENTILE SCREEN again??i dont give a fawk if it is AMOLED screen)...Now i love SXS because its my first Sony smartphone and i have to say its brilliant and fast and the screen is just AWSOME...!LOVE IT seriously and i prefer to go for the new LG with 2GB ram rather than SG3 if i had to give SXS for another but i will not do this soon...now i will shut my mouth and i will enjoy SONY XPERIA S!!!!
I do like the eye tracking idea (bugs me like hell when the screen switches off when I'm reading something!!).. but I the rest of it is generally pretty lame.. and the size.. Jeez.. I'm 6'1" and I couldn't operate a phone like that with one hand.. just too big.. Quad core.. schmod core... once we have ICS we will see a smoothness added to the UI...
not impressed... and other than the fact that they have a big customer base from the SGSII.. I can't see why anyone would choose it.
Not bad!
I can't deny that i've been anxiously waiting for the release of this new Sammy device and a bit impressed of it overall!
The design is not bad as most of the people say, not new but not repulsive.
As of the specs, we all expected most of the things; that's y most of us SXS owners didn't wait for its release coz the SXS did it all!
I already owned SGS2 and HTC sensation, both were amazing, but after i used SXS, i really enjoyed having a smartphone, in terms of build and sound quality and most of all the software, but really annoyed from the touch buttons though. The phone never hanged on me, always smooth and responsive, not like the touchwiz which is primitive and the sense which is laggy no matter what u do with it.
We should wait and see when it's available and after being used by people and assess after user experiences!

Again I never said the galaxy s3 was beautiful. All I said was beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I also said that given the choice, I world pick the xperia because it suits me more.
I'm very disappointed that very few people in here have the grace to say anything positive about the S3 which is a shame as it has many good points too.
Instead we have ended up with the same tribalism where you only dwell on the negatives.
The eye tracking thing is a bit suspect in my opinion. Having the front facing camera constantly working like that could have a detrimental impact on battery life.
My greatest appreciation is reserved for the silky smooth UI. Now that's something I could really do with. I'm rather tied of jerky and laggy.

I for one never said that it's a bad device. I even said I would buy it in certain conditions. The chipset is good, the screen is good, the software has some good features that I outlined. But overall SGS3 is the Half-Life 3 of mobile devices. It was hyped so much that it couldn't live up to the hype built around it not without Samsung's help. We expected something revolutionary, and got something evolutionary. Therefore the general meh direction this discussion is taking.

Was expecting a Arc>>>SGII situation
But it's just another One X
To put it in a metaphor, the SXS is ya Japanese/European supercar
SGIII/One X is ya American Muscle
I guess It depends on what ya want from the phone really, I personally still think what you lose from the SXS for them quads is too much.

Im debating leaving my 4S for android again and to me in terms of looks and features this and the one x look the best, now advantages this has over the x is 32gb internal (US version of x), 4.3 vs 4.7 (4.7 is huge!) and not sure what else, both sense 4 and xperia ui look great, both look awesome in design, both are dual core, both have fast data speeds and stuff like that. As for the one x it has only 16gb vs 32gb on the xperia s but the one x has LTE on att.
Anyway, for those of you with the XS, what are your thoughts overall? Happy with your purchase?
I'm interested in the Xperia S as well.
I will tell you I had a Euro HTC One X last month and sold it. The phone was very buggy. Not just a few but enough to make me sell it. Size wise it was fine, yes big and I have a iPhone 4S as well.
The AT&T version looked good, but I was just reading that users are only getting about 9 gigs after all the bloat wear and apps on the phone. Just not enough IMO.
So I'm temped to get the Xperia, no ICS, but the UI looks good and a good Launcher won't matter.
I like the camera features, though the One X had a few better features, like taking a pic while recording video.
Anyway any AT&T users of this phone, what's the verdict?

Hmm, interesting. I can always stay iphone as well, I have many apps and im sure the IP5 will have a nice res 4" screen, lte, better proc etc AND tons of memory (64gb ftw!), and say what you will but apple build quality is always A+

Taking pics while shooting video is an ICS thing. HTC is trying hard to make it their killer feature, but it actually isn't.

For me personally having tested the one x as well, the xperia is a much better phone.
The two front runners are the xperia and the galaxy S3.
The one x has all the bells and whistles but fails to deliver, the galaxy S3 has doggy looks but delivers a great user experience while the xperia looks the best but only really delivers for the mainstream user. It's not a phone for the hardcore who always want the latest cutting edge specs.
All these phones are much much better than the toyish iPhone. Apple's problem isn't hardware but software. IOS is still just basically an app launcher and I don't believe that'll change much with IOS6.
Steve jobs stuck to the line that fluidity was better than sophistication. Google on the other hand opted for sophistication knowing fully well that hardware would catch up. Google have won there just as Microsoft did in the nineties.
IOS is so inferior to android that I just can't see them closing the huge gulf that exists between both platforms in only a year. Software wise Apple are behind and will always stay behind because of a philosophy that failed them against Microsoft and is certain to fail them again today.
Overall I'd say get the xperia. ICS hopefully will see the phone really shine bright.

Personally for what I do with my phones I see them as pretty similar, its when I start wanting to do stuff like moves files on the phone, apps arent as open in what they can do with the file system and you can basiclly customize anything in android, beyond that to call an iphone a toy is ridiculous, it can do mostly everything android can except some features when you start digging deep, in the end its all about what you need, I consider myself a pretty big tech guy and I rarely run into a situation where Im like "Oh man I REALLY wish I had and android right now!" only times are when using the crappy youtube app (guess why lol), maps could be better, and random scenarios when doing file management stuff.
And yea the GS3 has great specs but but ugly! Like...really ugly lol

Even you yourself have in your response, highlighted quite a few instances where android either can while the iPhone can't or where android can just do it better.
I suggest to you that there are a lot of these instances, and that's right through the operating system. Android carries out most functions in fewer steps than IOS and is more intuitive in just as many ways.
The iPhone like I said, is just an app launcher and that's the stuff of 5yrs ago.
Hand held computing is much more than that now.
The iPhone is what it is, just another 'must have' joker, a status symbol, a very bold neon sign that says ' hey look at me, I'm the man you see in the place to be'.
There you will find the reason for its success and nowhere else.

My 2 pennies worth.
I don't like Apple, never have and never will for various reasons.
As far as the one x, used one for few hours last week and hated it. It is just full of bugs, too many annoyances to list here. I tried it as I was offered one at a good price, but decided to stick with my XperiaS.

One x on ATT is boot loader locked, great mobile tho and I'd get that version not the Tegra3.
I'd still get the xperia s over both of them tho as I did

Eh, we all have opinions, I like the simplicity and integration of apple combined with its top notch hardware, and I find Android to be a bit all over the place at times, for me they both have their pros and cons and I can use either, now WP7, thats a different story, I have tried it twice and just cant use it, the font and overall style is amazing and it does something things that "just make sense" when you think about it, but then it does things or misses features where it leaves you scratching your head, that combined with the fact that the app slection sucks and the hardware is pretty sub par, wp7 overall leaves much to be desired but has big potential if some major changes are done.
For now I'll wait for the IP5 and see what it offers, if disappointing I'll go android. As of now Im happy with my 4S.
Symbian also wasnt actually too bad! Just SO slow due to bad specs and like 10 apps lol, other then that it was great on my old Nokia's, and WM was alsmot the same in those aspects aswell imo, great potential but the OS was so slow due to low ram and weak proc, they were ahead of their time, but when the time came it was too late.
Yes symbian was very functional. It just lacked the fluidity and the presence of android. Android just like windows will become almost ubiquitous within 10 years.
It's Google's alternative to Windows. Understand that and you'll understand where it's going.

Competition is good, it forces everyone to step up their games, hopefully apple can impress with IOS6 and lets see if MS can turn around WP sales with an updated WP fixing the missing features and what not.
Please, lets stop saying "the Iphone can do what android can" and just face the facts. My droid can share files ota easily, run programs that can remotely control computers, etc... My sister has a hard time transferings songs from her mac book to her iphone... Enough said.
I am already planning on getting an xperia S. The choices I was facing was either the SGS3, ONE X and Xperia S. I was a bit dissapointed with SE last year when I got my NEO V because the hardware specs werent that competitive(single core 1ghz, 512 ram, 420mb storage). When xperia s came out it was a large step from what they had last 2011. I was thinking of shifting to samsung for the s3 but after I saw how ugly it is, it was safe to assume that im going with sony again. I never did like htc because of its crappy QC and sub-standard build quality.
I have to give to Sony though...their phones really are sexy. Aesthetically, it looks top class. Even the UI is one of the best around.

You are right Android can do more then iphone but the majority of iphone users could care less about that stuff so its a moot point for them, all they care about is playing music, web, phone, text, apps, just the basic stuff which iphone does exceptionally well, honestly thats all I use my phone for. Most iphone users dont care about cores, ram, and stuff like that, thats what many seem to not understand. All I want is a quad core and bigger screen on iphone which im sure the 5 will.
Exactly! Its like comparing apples with oranges...each has its own purpose.
Me personally, I needed a phone that can double as my pc and laptop at the same time... I do a lot on it; edit files, remotely controling my pc at home, viewing wifi cams at home, works as an extension for other devices, etc. I need a phone that can do more than just play music and other basic stuff.
When I saw the xperia S camera specs, I figured I need more now. I travel a lot and take tons of photos for personal and work purposes... This means I dont have to carry my camera all the time.

Hi there, I'm sure you get these kinds of questions all the time, but please indulge my relative newness. I tried to use the search function; however, it kept timing out before it retrieved any results. Something wrong with my internet, I am sure.
My phone network have given me a choice between some lovely phones (turns out paying bills on time gets you in their good books!) and I am tending towards the GS 3, I was wondering if any owners could tell me if I'm making the right call or a mistake.
My choices are the new Nokia Lumia WP7, HTC One X, Galaxy S 3 and the iPhone 4S.
I like the WP7 because I use the Zune software anyway (I actually use a Zune as my main mp3 player,) but that's just about the only reason. I'm not a massive Apple fan, but if it's the superior phone I would be tempted to go for it. I've been using a Desire S for a while, so am quite used to HTC (as well as liking Sense UI quite a bit, apparently that's contraversial.) The Samsung looks really nice from the reviews I've watched, but I've heard there are some build quality problems as well as Touchwiz UI (not a fan. Apparently that's contraversial too.)
Or is it worth sticking it out for HTC's next inevitable offering?
Any help would be appreciated
Go into a phone shop and ask to try each one out, prod, poke, play, stroke, drool, only you can really decide what's best for you. Don't listen to the guy in the shop, he's almost certainly going to be an Apple fanboy (aren't they always? it's bizarre!)
Lumia - low resolution screen
HOX - poor battery life, as well as a sealed in battery
iPhone 4S - tiny screen
These are just a few areas where the S3 beats all these phones, and that's without going into software. Physically the hardware of the S3 is hands-down the best overall package, screen is great (whether it's the best is debatable), great processor, great camera, great call quality, decent speaker volume. Great audio chip inside too, if you're really into your music like me.
Any minor issues the S3 does have can be fixed NOW with custom ROMs, and/or will be fixed by Samsung later with official updates. The issues mentioned for the other phones CANNOT be fixed at all.
It's really horses for courses - I know many, many people who love their iPhones, but when I show them my S3 with a live wallpaper Facebook/Twitter/weather ticker, scrolling launcher dock with all my main used apps on it, the great photos it takes and how great they look and video looks on the AMOLED screen, and how I *Swype like a boss* (phrase stolen from another XDA user), it's written all over their faces how jealous they are.
The only possible real criticism I can level at this phone is that it's very big, and the difficulty with which you have to operate it one-handed could be a show stopper for many people. Aside from that, I think it's easily the best phone on the market right now.
EDIT: Oh and if you don't like Touchwiz then you can get rid of a lot of how it looks by using a different launcher. Or go the whole way, root and flash a vanilla Android ICS ROM. I haven't looked, but I'm sure there will be a Sense ROM floating around for it soon too, if there isn't one already
EDIT 2: As for build quality problems - the only prob I've heard about was the hyperglaze coating/paint job. The first handset I received had a small imperfection in the finish and I sent it right back. The replacement is perfect.
I have heard about dodgy solder connections inside the HOX which can break if the phone is knocked hard, and disable your wifi, Apparently HTC have admitted it's an issue and resolved it now, but there's still plenty of the dodgy HOXs in stores I would imagine - bit of a gamble to buy one, you might end up having to send it back much later, and that's even if HTC don't refuse you - if it's got any exterior damage from the knock/drop then they could tell you to get stuffed, even though the solder prob inside is a known issue.
I guess it really depends on what operating system you like the best. WP7, ios and android all offer different things and it really is quite subjective so the only person that can answer that is you. Now if you choose android and are trying to decide what phone you want I'm pretty sure everybody here will suggest the SGS3. For obvious reasons..

I also came from an HTC Desire S, just moved to the GS3.
I found some of the SenseUI a bit confusing and find the GS3 more straightforward in that respect.
The GS3 hardware is stunning, especially the GPS which is a million times better than the Desire S.
If you are used to connecting your HTC device as a USB disk drive, then you're going to miss that because the GS3 can't do it. I was dissappointed by this apparent omission at first, but after a few days I have got used to the connection method provided by Samsung and it's no big deal transferring music or videos to the device or SD card.
My GS3 apparently also synchronises contacts, calendar etc to Outlook properly using KIES, which is something that never worked properly for me with the HTC. (It annoyingly kept changing my Outlook contact name format etc)
Big thumbs-up for GS3 from me !
Thanks for your advice! It seems like a really nice device. Tachikoma_kun is right though, got to go and have a look first.
Again, thanks!
If wanna changed to new phone, might as well change network. Loving my sgs3. Highly recommended. Best phone. Period.

Luckily, the OP is in the UK where we don't have software patents yet. Nothing like competing via the courtroom if you can't compete in the marketplace.
I had the One X and its not a bad phone at all, but the S3 is much better:
- better battery life
- external sd card
- removable battery
- touchwizz 5 has improved a lot and seems lighter on the system than tw 4
- better cpu and gpu
- better camera
- better soundquality and volume
For me the S3 is king
Thanks for all the information again, although with regard to the sound quality: HTC keep touting that they have Beats audio on their phones. I don't know much about it (I normally keep away from things Dr Dre does) but it's supposed to be pretty good, or premium at least. Is Samsung's one really better? I listen to a lot of different kinds of music (from classical to electro to black metal) but it's normally on the heavy rock/metal side. Is Samsung's better for this?
Cheers
The whole "beats audio" thing is just an attempt at a branding gimmick. Bit like a perfume company recruiting Victoria Beckham to put her name to it.
Not sure it's even a good branding exercise. When was the last time Dr dre was relevant? Wasn't his last biggest tune "still dre" back in 1998.
Now if HTC had done a deal with David Guetta.. it might have caught the attention more of their target market.
In short beats audio is nothing to take into account .
Choose anything except Iphone
WP7? Wait for another one year.
Anyway, since you have used HTC for quite some time, why not try Samsung.
