Galaxy S3... Share your thoughts - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

So finally the galaxy s3 is here. What do you fellas think of it. Please share.
For me, considering that I took no notice of the over hyped rumor mill that preceded it's launch, its a great phone with a few decent new features like s voice, s-beam, eye tracking, etc.
Although these features I suspect will have very limited day to day application, they're still nice to have and show Samsung to be at the vanguard of new innovations. It also feels like an ICS phone which sadly the HTCs do not. Maybe something to do will the 3.0 kernel.
The processing capabilities are very impressive with a buttery smooth user interface and silky scrolling. In terms of speed, it obviously won't feel much faster than most multi core devices but it's smoothness is unrivaled.
An 8mp camera and the absence of a hdmi port is rather disappointing but not crucial. It's design will not please all. Let's face it, no design pleases all.
Given a choice today between it and the xperia s, I probably would still go with the xperia because it has the hdmi port and better quality display but I hope the ICS update improves the UI performance and scrolling. Without improvement in those areas, I might find myself beginning to regret picking the xperia.
I thing user experience counts for a lot and a jerky and even laggy experience is quite frankly in my opinion, beneath a 2012 phone.

Compete fail just a slight incremental update at best to GN and It looks butt ugly, like an old plastic mid range Nokia, screens to big for most ppl, also uses touchwiz, phone will only be good for 10 mins of benchmarks and that's it. Enough said.

Not good and pretty enough. I didn't regret buying SXS over the One series and still I don't regret buying it.
And seriously. Pentile display in a flagship phone?

My thoughts?
I couldn't care for it really...like all the other phones out now besides the Sony line, its...blah...
Nothing appealing to the eye :/
They should/could have made it better, all bark and no bite.
....next!

Meh. Looks like a Galaxy Nexus 4S. A bit more screen, a bit more CPU power, a bit of this and a bit of that. Lots of gimmicks that you're never going to use - the best are wireless charging and S Beam ( which is most likely SGS3 to SGS3 only ), though the latter can and likely will be implemented in AOSP or forks when someone gets their hands on the actual device and explores the protocol, or maybe even earlier without Sammy compatibility. Lots of even more gimmicky accessories (spebble). Ugly ugly ugly ugly UGLEH body. Battery hog (quad-core x AMOLED x front camera always on aka Smart Stay - wireless charging = fail ). If I had to choose between my Desire and the SGS3, I would pick SGS3. But my XPS does everything I need so I won't be getting that thing ever.
@OP Sammy never was the innovator in the first place. Almost every single killer feature they have is either vanilla ICS or already exists in some form.

I think it will do much better than that. Credit where credit is due. It's the best performing phone right now and I just hope ics improves the ui performance of the xperia s because it's the poorest part of the phone. It's pretty fast and instant everywhere else but the UI feels very 2011 possibly even 2010ish in its performance which is a damn shame.
Well lets keep hope alive even history tells us that software development has always been one of Sony Ericsson weaknesses.

The thing is smoothness to CPU power is not linear. Having four cores doesn't give you an instant boost and a buttery smooth UI. This 'lag' is the way Android works and the great multitasking power we are used to might not have been possible without it. The rest is manufacturer optimisation. And yeah, quit whining about smoothness. Try ICS on a G1 and you'll be happy about how smooth your UI is on any other device.

Who care about galaxy s3.
Ask tghout on it forum...
I will never regreat my buying sxs.

It definitely fell short.
I think too many people hyped it up.
I know that many Samsung fanboys are upset. I was on another forum and after the unveil all I heard were complaints.
It is the new performance benchmark though.
However, it's too freaking big and the design is ugly.
Can't wait for the Sony Hayabusa to mop the floor with it.

and just one more thing, MEIZU quad core is most powerfull phone on market this year...
Samsung isnt top BEAST out there...

I don't think I mentioned CPU anywhere in any of my posts. The UI performance of the xperia is the poorest of all the new phones out right now. It's as quick as any if not faster at performing tasks. Could be something to do with the very graphics intensive nature of it but I think it's performance is not quite 2012ish.
Let's not turn this into a fanboy topic. It's not a major crime hoping for software improvements now is it.
I did not believe any of the rumors that followed the Samsung so I'm not surprised in any way by it's spec sheet.
Those who were expecting 1080p displays and all the rest of it were just living on another planet. You can't expect too much after just a year after the release the S2.
Can we not discuss the positives and negatives of phones without reverting to all the tribal nonsense.

Then you should ask this question on general android forum section....not in SXS section...we are with reasons on SXS, reason to buy it, to keep it and reason to develop it.
We do not need any other phones on this part of forum if you ask me..
but you asking in wrong places....
that is like a blog of iPhone ask that about SGS3....LOL

Seriously you think that big egg is very beautiful??
I mean you're joking right!you know I even had second thoughts of buying HTC OneX,
Then again thank god that I didn't go for the Tegra 3 chipset cause nVidia has some issues with HD video playback and which snapdragon doesn't have at all.
and I even noticed that XPS is very responsive and smooth,
I seriously don't care about the faster performing tasks, only thing that bugs me is the yellow tint that I got, which is a pain in the ass when it heats up.
and even though samsung tried too hard to put up their new phone and they failed to beat up iPad's GPU which is sad for them,
technically I don't regret having this phone and I really love the timescape UI and I think they will do something new with their ICS update,
cause they always the first to come up with new ideas and others tend to copy it from them.and I love the fact that they are keeping up with snapdragon chipset.
I know nothing much about nova thor chipset though..
GS III is an epic failure to me and I'm looking forward to get this hyabusa with S4 chipset.

the funny thing is that after GS3 the very next day LG comes and anounced a BEAST phone with Quad core chip,1,5ghz,4,7 inch screen with 720p display 32gb internal with micro sd support,LTE and the best thing 2GB RAM which Samsung already has 1GB AGAIN with GS3..i love galaxy s2 but galaxy s3 dissapointed me...i own a Sony Xperia S now and i am very happy with it..after the Samsung Galaxy S3 event i trade my Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Sony Xperia S because Samsung made me mad (seriously PENTILE SCREEN again??i dont give a fawk if it is AMOLED screen)...Now i love SXS because its my first Sony smartphone and i have to say its brilliant and fast and the screen is just AWSOME...!LOVE IT seriously and i prefer to go for the new LG with 2GB ram rather than SG3 if i had to give SXS for another but i will not do this soon...now i will shut my mouth and i will enjoy SONY XPERIA S!!!!

I do like the eye tracking idea (bugs me like hell when the screen switches off when I'm reading something!!).. but I the rest of it is generally pretty lame.. and the size.. Jeez.. I'm 6'1" and I couldn't operate a phone like that with one hand.. just too big.. Quad core.. schmod core... once we have ICS we will see a smoothness added to the UI...
not impressed... and other than the fact that they have a big customer base from the SGSII.. I can't see why anyone would choose it.

Not bad!
I can't deny that i've been anxiously waiting for the release of this new Sammy device and a bit impressed of it overall!
The design is not bad as most of the people say, not new but not repulsive.
As of the specs, we all expected most of the things; that's y most of us SXS owners didn't wait for its release coz the SXS did it all!
I already owned SGS2 and HTC sensation, both were amazing, but after i used SXS, i really enjoyed having a smartphone, in terms of build and sound quality and most of all the software, but really annoyed from the touch buttons though. The phone never hanged on me, always smooth and responsive, not like the touchwiz which is primitive and the sense which is laggy no matter what u do with it.
We should wait and see when it's available and after being used by people and assess after user experiences!

Again I never said the galaxy s3 was beautiful. All I said was beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I also said that given the choice, I world pick the xperia because it suits me more.
I'm very disappointed that very few people in here have the grace to say anything positive about the S3 which is a shame as it has many good points too.
Instead we have ended up with the same tribalism where you only dwell on the negatives.
The eye tracking thing is a bit suspect in my opinion. Having the front facing camera constantly working like that could have a detrimental impact on battery life.
My greatest appreciation is reserved for the silky smooth UI. Now that's something I could really do with. I'm rather tied of jerky and laggy.

I for one never said that it's a bad device. I even said I would buy it in certain conditions. The chipset is good, the screen is good, the software has some good features that I outlined. But overall SGS3 is the Half-Life 3 of mobile devices. It was hyped so much that it couldn't live up to the hype built around it not without Samsung's help. We expected something revolutionary, and got something evolutionary. Therefore the general meh direction this discussion is taking.

Was expecting a Arc>>>SGII situation
But it's just another One X
To put it in a metaphor, the SXS is ya Japanese/European supercar
SGIII/One X is ya American Muscle
I guess It depends on what ya want from the phone really, I personally still think what you lose from the SXS for them quads is too much.

RAZR, iPhone4S or Galaxy Nexus?

Ive decided to get a new phone (Well, actually my HTC decided for me by having its touchscreen die) but I'm not entirely sure what to get.
(The part that sucks about this, is all the new quadcore phones and iPhone 5 coming soon/later this year)
The Galaxy Note was just too big, so I've narrowed it down to the Galaxy Nexus, Moto RAZR and iphone4S. How have you found the GN to be? Is there anything I should keep in mind?
The RAZR and the GN have pretty much the same GPU/CPU combo, but the GN has a better screen, right? For those of you who have tried both, is there a major visible difference between the GN screen and the screen on the RAZR?
(Yes, I've heard all about the Pentile display, but it doesn't really bother me on the RAZR. I tried as hard as I can, and I can't tell the difference. Probably because the resolution is so high...)
The thing that's holding me back from the GN is the camera. I've heard that its fast, but not very good (Esp. compared to the iPhones camera) and at 5MP the resolution is pretty small these days.
The RAZR is kinda tempting because of all the accessories (Lapdock etc,) the ultra thin design, 8MP camera (Thou I've heard the quality is so-so) and being expandable up to 48 GB. But how is the camera on the RAZR? I've noticed it shoots pretty fast, but how does it compare quality wise?
I'm trying to keep ICS out of the equation, since the RAZR will have it soon.
And then theres the iPhone. I've heard the camera is awesome on it, it has a GPU that still can't be beat by any Android phone, and Apple is really awesome with providing updates quick, and for a long time after they released a phone. The thing that really holds me back though, is the 3.5 inch screen. Yes, it's an awesome screen, and amazing PPI, but I'm not sure I could get used to a screen that small after having an SGSII and Evo3D for a while with a 4.3 inch screen.
So yeah, is there anything about the RAZR I should know about? What phone would you choose if you haven't chosen what you have? And how do you find the battery life?
Dude it depends on your experience by using Android phones or IOS Phones for me 4s is better cuz it has lots of features when jailbreaked....About Nexus its cool but kinda "slow" IOS Has better speed and performance I mean NO LAGG at 4S
PLEASE GIMME THANKS!
From those 3 phones I would choose the Razr. The thing that is bringing up the thought of returning mine is the bootloader: will it get unlocked or not, if so when? The apple Iphone I would simply never ever consider it because the phone is so locked(no widgets etc) and the Gnex is awesome because there is so many roms+ unlocked BL. But if the RAZR gets the BL unloacked I think it will be a beast. The built quality is one of the best i`ve seen on an Android phone. Beats bith the Gnex and Iphone.
Sorry for spelling mistakes I am writing this on my tab without auto correction.

My advice is the Razr as i have had a Iphone4s and nexus and a Galaxy S2
the razr is best in build quality along with the iphone4S
Iphone 4S is the most overrated hardware in this century so far i kept it for 1 day and sold it
While Samsung phones feel all cheap and nasty but have great features
The Razr is a great phone and its now my main phone , defo the best phone on the market at present
only bad side to Razr is locked bootloader and it doesnt have WIFI direct
great roms Icecream Sandwich roms already out put the phone to near full potential
Cant really fault this phone its the best by far
I came to the Razr Maxx from the Evo 3D. I loved the Evo 4G and Evo 3D. You won't notice anything about the screen that overly zealous people are complaining about on the Razr's screen. The screen is great. But get the Maxx. The battery lasts all day long. You'll really like that feature.
The Apple's screen is just too small. It would be nice if they released a phone with a bigger screen and loosened their control over the device just a bit. With Jobs dead now you would think that might happen but I wouldn't hold my breath. Afterall, why give the public something they might want. Apple knows best.
get an iphone kthxbai
For me decision to buy a razr was quite easy. I had 3gs & 2x iP 4 and I definitely didn't want to come back to this s#*%. I'm talking abt iTunes and othes "advantages" of IOS.
Samsung devices are realy high performance but.. looks and feels like a piece of crappy plastic. But I wanted nice and solid looking device.
Well, that's my story.

thanks whore.
I wouldn't add much to what everyone here has already said. It basically boils down to preference.
iPhone 4s has a really smooth interface and yeah iOS is optimized like ****! But then you're hardware support is gonna run out pretty soon cuz it has no dev community. Also if you're an experiment freak like me, you're gonna feel caged. You'll be stuck with an older version of iOS while all the newer Apple devices will get updated.
With Android that isn't the case, I still have my old 2010 SE Xperia X8 and even it's got an ICS port. So device support (at least unofficially) isn't an issue.
Now coming down to GNex vs. RAZR
RAZR wins out on almost every front. Better build quality, signal/reception, camera, call quality and GPS. A smaller screen and lesser res(it in no way looks pixellated or anything, the display is just beautiful but statistically lesser in res and size) with the same GPU as GNex means you'll get higher frame rates as games start taxing these GPUs. Also its the slimmest in the world(one of a kind) with a revolutionary design so you got bragging rights too!
The RAZR has a TI OMAP 4430, which is a lower model that GNex's TI OMAP 4460, but then their both clocked at 1.2 GHz. Untill we get overclocking support, you won't actually notice any difference at stock speeds.(please correct me if im wrong here)
The RAZR does lose out on the locked bootloader and direct update support. But we've heard from kholk that a bootloader bypass is on the way and also that Motorola is planning to unlock our bootloaders with the ICS update in Q2.
The fact that Gnex has ICS again doesn't matter much. ICS doesn't bring any thing really useful to the table. Its just like a hyper-optimized Gingerbread. No lags, smooth UI and all that ****.
The RAZR is scheduled for the ICS update anyways and I'm pretty sure that it'll see android 5.0 too!
PS: Even if the Gnex was better than the RAZR in every damned specification, I would still buy the RAZR. I just can't stand the plastic on Samsung phones. When the hell are they gonna learn that you don't put something as cheap as plastic on high end phones! :/
BTW tried to keep my thoughts as unbiased as possible. Hope it helped!
EDIT
Sorry forgot somethings!
Battery on the RAZR is awesome! I can easily get 1.5 days of normal usage with some wifi (no data however). Also you can use setCPU to lower processor speeds when the screen is off! Thats a big battery booster!
Battery Life Order:
RAZR>iPhone 4S> GNEX(Battery on the GNEX truly SUCKS!, idk what samsung was thinking)

All in what you want. IPhone has kinda a Fisher Price ui IMO. It is fast & smooth. And is missing lee capability. Screen is beautiful, but tiny.
Nexus has a cheap battery door. The camera is small, but fast. And there us no SD slot. Deal killer for me.
I have a couple Razr Maxx's. I love them. They are sturdy, and the battery life is phenomenal. Motorola Blur is coming along nicely. The smart actions are extremely handy, as is Motocast. HDMI has full mirroring, which is also nice. The nano-coating is not only water resistant, its fingerprint resistant. Bootloader is the only negative for this phone, unless you're looking for NFC or a barometer.
If u are a crack flasher, u might want the nexus. Otherwise, for something that just dominated out of the box, Maxx can't be beat yet IMO. Don't waste you're money on a og Razr. U will just end up frustrated with battery life.
Hey I would consider the rezound out of all of them. It has the best screen out with 720p 4.3" display, equal to the galaxy nexus but sharper. 32gb of storage, 8mp camera with 1080p recording. 2mp front face camera. Beats audio, Dual core 1.5ghz snapdragon processor. Dev support is outstanding. Mine is running android 4.0.3 ics and has face lock. Phone is the only one aside from the Thunderbolt that can talk and surf at the sametime on 3g and 4g. The other 4g phones on Verizon can only do it on 4g. It's rooted and has free WiFi tethering. The galaxy nexus is ok but it gets boring from times. Vanilla ics is ok for some. The 5mp camera was not that great and I dislike the fact that there is no external sd card slot. The only thing great to me about the nexus is getting the updates first. I wish HTC was still making the galaxy line up. The razr is ok. It has great signal, battery life is great. Screen is pretty good. I don't know if it's that new pin tile technology on the razor or not but I hate the pin tile. Looks grainy or something when looking at it close. I hate motoblur. The only thing nice about blur widgets were that they were resizable but they suck to me. There like windows phone 7 tiles without the live action. The rezound is a excellent phone in my opinion. HTC sense is just a better UI to me. Sense 4.0 is even better and runs very light on the Rom. Or with the rezound you can also go with the vanilla feel of ics. Screen is incredible. Music sounds amazing, never had a problem with signal. My battery life is great with dev support getting 14hrs out of my rezound with heavy use. Camera is beautiful.

The Sense UI on the HTC rezound actually makes the phone lag! Sorry dude, I hate Sense with a passion! Seen too many HTC phones with my friends. :/
And the 1.5 Ghz dual core processor isn't even a true dual core. Its more on a makeshift arrangement. Thats the reason why HTC Rezound is beaten by the RAZR and other TI OMAP dual core phones in benchmarks. And as far as Beats are concerned, its just a software equalizer, nothing else and its already been ported!
And an LCD display doesn't even come close to a S-AMOLED display when it comes to color contrast and brightness. Besides AMOLEDs eat less battery with dark colors!
Also the Rezound is bulky and HTC is probably gonna kill hardware support for it very soon in light of the new HTC One series release. So I don't think its that good an option.
Dont go the Apple way, I just did but couldnt go back, to many things is just missing.

It all depends on what you're looking for the most in using your phone. For me, getting all my calls, texts, and voice mails on time, are number 1 priority. And Motorola is known to make great wireless radios. The internet speeds are awesome on it. I love the Droid Razr. Not a big fan of the screen display technology but it's easy to get use to. Also not a big fan of the TI OMap processor, I think it's kinda slow but it's not a big enough issue to drive me away. It has a nice camera and it's a really nice smartphone. The build quality is fantastic in my opinion. The device just looks beautiful. I read and also have heard in videos that Motorola isn't gonna be seeing ICS updates until 3RD quarter of the year. That's pretty late. If you're thinking about getting the Razr, I would get the Razr Maxx. But the thing that sucks about the Maxx is that right now it only comes in black I believe. The OG Razr comes in black, white, and purple.
If you want the ICS OS right now or you plan to root and flash roms, your best choice is the Galaxy Nexus. Google phones are made for development. I expected something amazing with the Galaxy Nexus but it's ok to me. Only thing it has that I like is ICS. The display is ok. I expected better with 720p HD.
Iphone 4s has a great camera and screen display. It looks to be smooth when I play with it. I never owned one so I don't know. My friend who was an android head for years went to get a iPhone and he loves it. Says it's smooth no lag. Not as many bugs as android. I may have to mess around and get a iPhone in the future lol. But it would absolutely need to have a bigger screen and it would have to be a 4G device. The current screen size with iPhone is too small for my taste but hey some people might not care.

[Q] Is it the right step?

I really dunno if i'm doing the right thing or not. I'm moving on from an HTC sensation with all the build quality and the sense UI glory; the company has to offer! To a sony xperia S
No doubt the phone rocks with mind-blowing specs :
amazing screen resolution,
advanced camera and finally a dedicated button for it,
an hdmi port,
thank god a usb on the go
and the long awaited nfc option for android
the drawbacks are not that fussy :
no sdcard (handling with built in internal memory avoids lags)
unremovable battery (i guess u change ur phone more often than changing the battery)
port covers (get used to by time)
camera very near to edge (hold the corners when taking pics)
power button near to earphone jack (use ur left hand to awake the device when connected to earphones)
what really concerns me is that sony ericsson devices never attracted me and a lot of people, is it because of the looks? durability? service? the dull timescape UI????? smartphone community interest in comparison with other lines like htc and samsung???
I know sony has divorced ericsson and it provides a new attitude, but the background..... u know what i mean?!
I just need assuring words for me and all the people out there thinking about this change!!
You can't go wrong with Sony phone it has the best speaker phone, phone ringer is loud does the function of a phone well aswell of a smartphone and PlayStation I have bought one in fact I have an iPhone 4s ,galaxy nexus ,Xperia play and a blackberry curve and the best is the Sony
Thanks
Sony/Ericsson never needed the best hardware to make their phones fly. And don't say anything about Timescape, at least in the opinion of a lot of people, it's FAR better then Sense (which I think is crap).
Sony don't need to appeal to giantic screens, or use a fake Beats (which improves a little, but not as much as xLoud), or use AMOLED screens (Bravia provides better colors, AMOLED have yellowish images), neither the best hardware., but they really know how to optimize their software to their hardware.
And, the best thing of all: The best designs. Nothing beats Xperia Arc or NXT Series design.
Sent from Xperia X10 Mini Pro using ICS by paul-xxx
I guess sony problem is perception.reviewer aren't too kind to sony.sony itself have apple "we know what best for you attitude" rather than giving what customer wanted.they won't use bleeding but buggy new tech.and sony sure as hell won't give u all thing in one, even for flagship.the arc have no ffc, sxs don't have white magic.
hardware wise its usually little bit better than the last iphone n nexus..thats turn a lot of people off..why buy single when u have dual core last yr.and why buy dual when u could get quad core this year.(but nvr realised all those power are useless as android os n apps can't utilities it)
What make me coming again n again to xperia is
1) it a phone..it primary use is to make call..however only Motorola n sony have exceptional call quality
2) its a multimedia device. Most important arescreen, sound and camera. Its where the xperia come 2nd to none.(don't know why people find multimedia device with ****ty sound and oversaturated screen is appealing.)
3)design:hardware n user interface have to look good..htc,sammy hardware and touchwizz n sense are damn to ugly for my taste.
4)support:sony are the only company that will upgrade all its 2011 phone.not three out of thousand of galaxy..and it support for developer is good..yes.there's a lack of developer for xperia device..but at least their rom work and aren't wayy too buggy.

I came from a Samsung Galaxy S and while the samsung hardware is nice their software is terrible. You really need to tweak a samsung phone to fix the bugs or perform acceptable. Even the SGS2 has buggy stock software imo. With my xperia now I don't have to tweak to get good performance. I only miss root to remove some minor bloatware, block ads and restore backup.
Never had a HTC device because they were always mediocre and I don't like sense. But the new one x does look nice but is expensive and big. And the one s has little storage, lower resolution and a pentile screen. After the pentile screen of the sgs I will never take pentile again .
So my experiance is positive. Stock it runs better then the samsung phones. And in my opinion the ui looks much better then sense and touchwiz.
I think the lack of popularity in general is because of advertising, at least here. I see a lot of htc and samsung adds but no sony ads.
But you should try it out at a store and see if it fits your tastes.

I had SGS 2 before i moved on to the sensation by the way, i dumped it coz i really got fed up from its software in spite of it being a really nice handset in every aspect!
I totally agree about the advertisement part! They should give a great deal of attention to it!
By the way sense is awesome, it's just bulky on a limited ram, but will miss it when i shift to the SXS !!
i changed from sensation to sgs 2 to lg p920 none of those were usable on stock for me, the sensation was ok but the camera ... seriously they call it a camera ? and the sense sucked most of the resources (ram/battery)
i was waiting for the SXS and am truely happy i did cause the phone experience is amazing and am still on stock , no root no custom rom, just stock as good as out of the box and the phone is flawless,
the camera takes amazing, sharp pictures without flash at the darkest nights
the battery lasts for more than a day for me with edge on/wifi on for the entire day with several calls and some casual gaming
and let me tell you about the screen, this is a piece of art, i love watching pics on that screen, its sharp, crisp and colors are amazingly perfect
as for the music , the sound is crisp and clear threw the stock headphones which i like more than any of my previous phones
i even add full HD movies on my phone and connect it to my TV threw HDMI cable and watch it , its fast it doesnt hang which is great and does the job right
plus in gaming am enjoying my old nice games like lane splitter and angry birds space/fruit ninja which runs pretty fast and no lags at all
the os itself is not buggy, i own the phone for 15 days now and i didnt encounter a hang or a bug yet
so i would definitely advise you to swap to one of those
After buying the SXS, I must say IT'S DEFINITELY THE RIGHT STEP!!!!!
Build quality is magnificent, stock software is superb and overall performance is outstanding!!!
Wow!!! Never expected it to be that way!
For all the people out there hesitating to get it, put on your clothes and drive off to the nearest dealer and buy it!!!

Amazing phone
Sounds crazy but I am really happy there is no extra sd card slot, as this almost more than anything else is the reason why everything slows down. I do not need all my pictures movies and music. As soon as I take a pc or video it's uploaded to my sftp server and dropbox so always have copy. So with everything stored on the Internet ( no minor not the cloud just the Internet) local storage is not an issue.
Its why more devices are moving away from the sd cause of serious drain on resources especially if apps are moved to sd card so temptation is removed >:~}

I totally agree with the fact that sony doesn't do much advertising actually closer to nothing where I am... But this sets it apart from all the other manufactures and gives individuality to sony phones i.e people who have sony phones.
It's my first Sony smartphone, but i am more than happy of the choice i've made. The software it's so perfect that you really don't need to install anything from the market (i mean tools) The only thing i'm not so happy about is the usb port door...i'm afraid that in time it will break down and after that it will not have such a nice aspect, but if this will happen i will try to find a solution. I adviced already 4 people to buy this Sony smartphone (3 already bought the smartphone...1 to go ) and now i'm thinking of taking a Sony Tablet S gift for my girlfriend birthday. I come from HTC Desire HD and i've made this update because i needed a better camera...and i have to say that this Xperia S camera just blow all my expectations...just WOW !

Xperia s or Iphone s?

At the moment i own an Iphone 4s (my first ever iphone) I have had several Android phones including HTC, Samsung Galaxy, Lg 3D & more..
I find the Iphone very responsive with very crisp screen, BUT i find the screen size & customization options poor even though it's jailbroken!!!
I have looked at selling the iphone in favour of another Android.
Would some of you be kind enough to give me your honest opinions on how this new Sony compares to the Iphone 4s 16gb?
Kind Regards
Mark

I've had several Android Phones, 1st gen iPhone.
Currently I own a Xperia S coming from an iPhone 4.
My personal choice for going back to Android was the customization, not being locked down with 1 OS/ROM and also the standard customization you could do in Android is much more than iPhone. I'm not saying the iPhone wasn't good but it didn't meet my needs anymore.
Also price/spec wise Android phones are better equipped and in general a bit cheaper (especially Xperia S which in my opinion is a very good price/spec phone).
Apart from OS I also had the need for a bigger screen as I do alot of reading on the phone (I catch up several sites when watching TV).
Choice of phone is something personal but these are just my 2 cents and my reasons for making the switch back to Android.
Thanks, Why did you choose sony over all other models? I have looked at the Galaxy s2, The HTC one s (Is Quad core support implemented in ICS?)
I have watched several videos that show the Benchmark of the sony beating several high end phones, But i am a little concerned with the battery life & button response problems!!!
For me the display on the XS is much better than the iPhone now..larger and crisper.. And the interface is very smooth.. (I've come from xperia arc) ..customisations are always going to be better on Android.. See if you can get to try one out for yourself..

Few reason.
1. Best ppi display on market 342 with 720p
2. Sony software optimization is quitly the best, xperia arc beat up galaxy s2 and xperia s beat up htx one x (browser, camera speed) even we dont have ics yet. When we get ics we will beat up htc one x even more.
3. Exmor r chip for camera, the best for me (for pic in dark room)
4. Xloud which improve sound a lot better then beats audio of htc (was using it some time)

Thanks Guys!, I think i might just go for one!. I love the design even though some people say they r fugly... I'm just bored of the iphone & need rid... I might not even need to put my reading glasses on with a bigger screen lol
You have been very helpful, Thanks!
Have Xperia S, iPhone 4s and HTC One X. Used to own Nexus One, HD2, iPhone 4 and galaxy S 2. For me, iPhone 4s works best as an everyday phone. But in the android camp, xperia s is the best I've used so far. Maybe no ICS for now, but the overall system responsiveness and stability are much better than ONE X's Sense 4.0. Battery life far exceeds it as well. One X's battery is truly the worst nightmare!

Just curious why do you have so many different phones (work related or developing software)
i came from an iphone 4s also. while i love the iphone and the os, i just wanted something different so i got the sony. i have to say both phones are great. i still like iphone for what it is. but the sony is also nice with all the customizing and the look. you really cant go wrong with either one, but for now between these two i would take the sony. and especially since in the US not many people have the phone. i get people asking everyday what phone i have.
when the iphone comes out with a bigger screen, then it will be a little harder decision
I also have both iPhone 4s and xperia. I think iPhone is much more easy to use. My wife loves it but I like Android cause it's more customize. Geek like us would love Android but average user would prefer iPhone due to user friendly but for me Android better because I play and change hoe it look everyday.

As fast as screen resolution. Apple is known to have better and I am sure iPhone 5 will be better and higher resolution. Look at iPad 3. I also have iPad 1,2 and 3.

All I can say is that ever since getting my Xperia S, the iPhone 4S' in my office look really, really dated. Chunky, with a small screen. Plus the guys with the iPhones have all been drooling over the screen on the Xperia.
Having said that, I strongly suspect the new iPhone will look very nice indeed, and they are all very easy to use.
Used the 4 and 4s.
This is my third android phone.
I would say iphone.
Why? The software.
Whatever a phone you got.
20 mp, 2ghz quad cpu etc..
If the software sucks, the phone will also suck.
This is my last android phone.
I will wait for ics for this crap.
Last chance. If ics is also crap. Never go back to android.
I will smash this phone in pieces and get an iphone instead.
Peace.

Haha, silly you
Have you ever heard of Silly Billy?
If Phones was games consoles, iPhone would be a Wii, they are are for people that who ain't got a clue about other products and assume the 4s is almighty
I personally don't like the iOS, and hardware wise there's a lot better from other Androids let alone the the XPS, and a lot of its features although the quality is there, are overrated & limited(mainly to Apple products)
And for me personally, I like to snap shots of my daughter & print them off at my local Kodak kiosk, something iPhone don't allow.
But all down to personal preference, and my preference is I know better.

When software sux , the phone also sux . Thats go to ios which cant bluetooth file transfer , plug and play storage , HDMI and USB OTG at the same time and also paid apps store .
Whatsapp cost 99$ on ios but free on android .
While Efe64 is clearly a bit mentally challenged in a way he's right. SE's downfall has always been buggy as fúck software :-/

This a good phone?

Im debating leaving my 4S for android again and to me in terms of looks and features this and the one x look the best, now advantages this has over the x is 32gb internal (US version of x), 4.3 vs 4.7 (4.7 is huge!) and not sure what else, both sense 4 and xperia ui look great, both look awesome in design, both are dual core, both have fast data speeds and stuff like that. As for the one x it has only 16gb vs 32gb on the xperia s but the one x has LTE on att.
Anyway, for those of you with the XS, what are your thoughts overall? Happy with your purchase?
I'm interested in the Xperia S as well.
I will tell you I had a Euro HTC One X last month and sold it. The phone was very buggy. Not just a few but enough to make me sell it. Size wise it was fine, yes big and I have a iPhone 4S as well.
The AT&T version looked good, but I was just reading that users are only getting about 9 gigs after all the bloat wear and apps on the phone. Just not enough IMO.
So I'm temped to get the Xperia, no ICS, but the UI looks good and a good Launcher won't matter.
I like the camera features, though the One X had a few better features, like taking a pic while recording video.
Anyway any AT&T users of this phone, what's the verdict?

For me personally having tested the one x as well, the xperia is a much better phone.
The two front runners are the xperia and the galaxy S3.
The one x has all the bells and whistles but fails to deliver, the galaxy S3 has doggy looks but delivers a great user experience while the xperia looks the best but only really delivers for the mainstream user. It's not a phone for the hardcore who always want the latest cutting edge specs.
All these phones are much much better than the toyish iPhone. Apple's problem isn't hardware but software. IOS is still just basically an app launcher and I don't believe that'll change much with IOS6.
Steve jobs stuck to the line that fluidity was better than sophistication. Google on the other hand opted for sophistication knowing fully well that hardware would catch up. Google have won there just as Microsoft did in the nineties.
IOS is so inferior to android that I just can't see them closing the huge gulf that exists between both platforms in only a year. Software wise Apple are behind and will always stay behind because of a philosophy that failed them against Microsoft and is certain to fail them again today.
Overall I'd say get the xperia. ICS hopefully will see the phone really shine bright.

Personally for what I do with my phones I see them as pretty similar, its when I start wanting to do stuff like moves files on the phone, apps arent as open in what they can do with the file system and you can basiclly customize anything in android, beyond that to call an iphone a toy is ridiculous, it can do mostly everything android can except some features when you start digging deep, in the end its all about what you need, I consider myself a pretty big tech guy and I rarely run into a situation where Im like "Oh man I REALLY wish I had and android right now!" only times are when using the crappy youtube app (guess why lol), maps could be better, and random scenarios when doing file management stuff.
And yea the GS3 has great specs but but ugly! Like...really ugly lol

Even you yourself have in your response, highlighted quite a few instances where android either can while the iPhone can't or where android can just do it better.
I suggest to you that there are a lot of these instances, and that's right through the operating system. Android carries out most functions in fewer steps than IOS and is more intuitive in just as many ways.
The iPhone like I said, is just an app launcher and that's the stuff of 5yrs ago.
Hand held computing is much more than that now.
The iPhone is what it is, just another 'must have' joker, a status symbol, a very bold neon sign that says ' hey look at me, I'm the man you see in the place to be'.
There you will find the reason for its success and nowhere else.

My 2 pennies worth.
I don't like Apple, never have and never will for various reasons.
As far as the one x, used one for few hours last week and hated it. It is just full of bugs, too many annoyances to list here. I tried it as I was offered one at a good price, but decided to stick with my XperiaS.

Eh, we all have opinions, I like the simplicity and integration of apple combined with its top notch hardware, and I find Android to be a bit all over the place at times, for me they both have their pros and cons and I can use either, now WP7, thats a different story, I have tried it twice and just cant use it, the font and overall style is amazing and it does something things that "just make sense" when you think about it, but then it does things or misses features where it leaves you scratching your head, that combined with the fact that the app slection sucks and the hardware is pretty sub par, wp7 overall leaves much to be desired but has big potential if some major changes are done.
For now I'll wait for the IP5 and see what it offers, if disappointing I'll go android. As of now Im happy with my 4S.
Symbian also wasnt actually too bad! Just SO slow due to bad specs and like 10 apps lol, other then that it was great on my old Nokia's, and WM was alsmot the same in those aspects aswell imo, great potential but the OS was so slow due to low ram and weak proc, they were ahead of their time, but when the time came it was too late.
Yes symbian was very functional. It just lacked the fluidity and the presence of android. Android just like windows will become almost ubiquitous within 10 years.
It's Google's alternative to Windows. Understand that and you'll understand where it's going.

Yes symbian was very functional. It just lacked the fluidity and the presence of android. Android just like windows will become almost ubiquitous within 10 years.
It's Google's alternative to Windows. Understand that and you'll understand where it's going.

Competition is good, it forces everyone to step up their games, hopefully apple can impress with IOS6 and lets see if MS can turn around WP sales with an updated WP fixing the missing features and what not.
Please, lets stop saying "the Iphone can do what android can" and just face the facts. My droid can share files ota easily, run programs that can remotely control computers, etc... My sister has a hard time transferings songs from her mac book to her iphone... Enough said.
I am already planning on getting an xperia S. The choices I was facing was either the SGS3, ONE X and Xperia S. I was a bit dissapointed with SE last year when I got my NEO V because the hardware specs werent that competitive(single core 1ghz, 512 ram, 420mb storage). When xperia s came out it was a large step from what they had last 2011. I was thinking of shifting to samsung for the s3 but after I saw how ugly it is, it was safe to assume that im going with sony again. I never did like htc because of its crappy QC and sub-standard build quality.
I have to give to Sony though...their phones really are sexy. Aesthetically, it looks top class. Even the UI is one of the best around.

You are right Android can do more then iphone but the majority of iphone users could care less about that stuff so its a moot point for them, all they care about is playing music, web, phone, text, apps, just the basic stuff which iphone does exceptionally well, honestly thats all I use my phone for. Most iphone users dont care about cores, ram, and stuff like that, thats what many seem to not understand. All I want is a quad core and bigger screen on iphone which im sure the 5 will.
Exactly! Its like comparing apples with oranges...each has its own purpose.
Me personally, I needed a phone that can double as my pc and laptop at the same time... I do a lot on it; edit files, remotely controling my pc at home, viewing wifi cams at home, works as an extension for other devices, etc. I need a phone that can do more than just play music and other basic stuff.
When I saw the xperia S camera specs, I figured I need more now. I travel a lot and take tons of photos for personal and work purposes... This means I dont have to carry my camera all the time.

Phone is not as fast as I'd like it to be. Does rooting, uninstalling bloatware...

... and using a custom Kernel makes things better? The phone works well on stock ICS but I feel it's quite sluggish and this is disappointing for a phone with a freaking 1.5Ghz Dual Core processor. It's almost as sluggish as ICS was on my old Xperia Ray (which I downgraded because the slugginess was unbearable). I did a full reset and repair of the phone with SUS but nothing changed at all when it comes to smoothness.
Since I have the yellow tinge (not so bad though, in fact I haven't gotten it replaced yet), I'm holding back in doing any sort of modification because I fear they might complain when I finally decide to get it repaired.
I really hate sluggish choppy interfaces and I'd like to know if there is any way to make this phone smoother. Otherwise I might get it replaced, and then sell it as new/just replaced for maximum profit (bought mine used for a good price but it had some scratches on it).

I have the same feeling and I am also wondering is there any help after rooting or unlocking the phone.

there's nothing yet, even if you rooted your phone you wouldn't be able to get rid of it. You COULD try Nova launcher which is a bit smoother than the stock Xperia Launcher (no root needed)

Problem is that I really like stock launcher (all widgets etc.). So there is no hope for now, shame.
Sell it

you could purge all sony stuff using Titanium backup or smth like that (root needed) and install this:

but that's a hell of a job
How disappointing. This phone is very powerful but it's so damn slow it makes me rage. Even the browser is nowhere near as smooth as the one on the Galaxy SII or even the Galaxy S.
I'm starting to get buyer's remorse even though I only paid 300€ for it.
If Sony doesn't get their **** together and make their crappy bloat ridden software more smooth than this (it's seriously utterly slow even compared to the iPhone3GS or even compared to my Ray Gingerbread stock with bloatware removed, I'd say it's almost as bad as Symbian), they are going to lose a ton of customers.
I mean, for ****'s sake, scrolling the app drawer noticeably stutters hard like moving a bunch of icons to the left is too much to handle for this phone. Even scrolling the settings menu is so crappy it's embarassing, it's almost as bad as on those early touchscreen phones like the Corby.
The browser is no more fluid than my Ray on Gingerbread. Both are horribly laggy on complex pages.
I know I'm sounding like a whiny user, but seriously, this is a flagship phone. The software itself is good but it needs some serious optimization, as it stands right now, I can only imagine an iphone user (or any other user who can't stand laggyness in user interfaces) cringing after trying the XS at a store for the first time.
I understand your problems, but i've got a rooted phone with KA09 ics rom, apex launcher, force gpu rendering on, windows animation scale off, transition scale 0,5x, dalvik.vm.heapsize=192m, and the phone is fast, no slugginess etc.

Remove the bloat and use supercharger v6. CM9 for Xperia S will make a huge difference. My buddy has a galaxy nexus and it is only a bit smoother than my Xperia S even with JB. Not enough to make me complain. Use Chrome or Dolphin Engine Beta. Both of those are superior to the stock browser in ICS anyways.
Wow. First time I see someone complaining so much about performances... I (and all the people who have tried it) have no such problem.
Here are the first things you should try, IMHO :
- going in app settings (or task manager) and see which apps use the most cpu/ram. If you don't use them, close them. I use an auto taskkiller (but well configured ;-))
- in ICS, even without root, if you can't uninstall an app, you can always disable it in the apps settings. I did this to disable Facebook, Google + etc. since I don't use them. = disable all useless apps.
- check your auto-update settings and see which apps update frequently (heavy cpu charge).
Finally, if you did all that, and don't have plenty of widgets, your phone may have a problem. Just for your display issues I'd send it back...
Good luck

Whew.
I have the yellow tinted screen, so I'm not rooting it just now. I also don't have a micro sim yet so I haven't even started properly using the phone. I uninstalled every uninstallable bloatware and haven't installed anything else when I made my last post about poor performance.
I think such an expensive and not to mention flagship phone should grant top tier performance out of the box without having to mess with it so much.
This phone really doesn't live up to it's specs.
Yesterday I installed a couple of games I like, Wind Up Knight and Let's Golf 3, both start out very fluid, but after a while start running slower and slower. I really couldn't believe it when after playing for 10 minutes Wind Up Knight started running worse than it does on my Gingerbread Xperia Ray.
Not to mention, there is no excuse for the UI to be so freaking choppy. Again, my Gingerbread Ray was silky smooth out of the box and it still is after several months since I last formatted it.
I really like the looks and the UI of sony phones, but I was disappointed by ICS on the Ray, so I expected the flagship phone to run a lot better, but it runs just as bad. Sure, it's ok if you use your phone to do calls and messages, but when the phone has such poor performance in general despite being a freaking flagship dual core 1gb of ram phone, and has a tinted screen to top it all off, disappointment and buyer's remorse are inevitable.
I think I'll just get rid of it after I get the screen fixed, and then get the iPhone 5 when it comes out later this year. If I have to put up with terribly unoptimized software, painfully slow official updates, poor compatibility with apps, slow performance, choppy interface, slow browser that is also losing Flash support, games that don't run well and are just unoptimized iPhone ports for the most part, I'd rather give my money to Apple (which is a company I despise), at least their iPhones are fast, get updated (the freaking 3GS is getting iOS 6! While on the Android front most manufacturers are still scrambling to get ICS on SOME of their devices), have the best app, and don't require you tearing your hair out to get the phone work as it should.
I'm looking more and more into the iPhones lately, and the only downside compared to Android, is a more closed OS which doesn't allow for much personalization, but they seem to be much better in everything else. The price is steep but I think it might be worth it in the long run compared to these droids which drop in price so fast they are worth peanuts after less than a year. Sure, I can't install an alternate OS on the iPhone, but if my droid worked fine out of the box, I wouldn't have to bother with custom roms and kernels in the first place.
I'm sorry but that's just how I feel right now about this whole Android and Sony disappointment. Android is a great idea on paper but so far it didn't work out imo, and it's unfortunate that the only real alternative is Apple. Like I said, I'd gladly sacrifice some personalization options in exchange for smooth, functional, fast, optimized UI and apps.
Ow come on dude...

About the Apple, maybe I will. About closing this thread, I can't because I'm not a mod.
I'm glad you are happy with your XS. Maybe I have higher standars when it comes to quality.
Hopefully grass will be greener on the other side, if I really do get an iPhone.
I know it will be greener, you already sound like a real apple user..
I see the trolls learned some new trolling technique now.

well I'm not really complaining... but he's kinda right.
I must say my AOSP build on my 3 year old Desire Z is smoother than ICS on the SXS thought.. the DZ cannot handle as much apps as the SXS can, but still it's kinda stupid no?

I did this and it improved homescreen and menu scrolling. Not it's not 100% fluid but it's definitely a lot better than before. Using a LWP makes it lag again though, which is not cool (I really like the cosmic flow lwp).
I actually heard enabling this would make things worse so I left it disabled:

Also, I was in a bad mood before, sorry if I sounded extremely unhappy about the XS. I'm just a bit disappointed because I had sky high expectations about this phone.

Yes there is. I actually love how smooth it already is and if it improves even more, joy oh joy for me But only if I could show you my device and trust me the last thing you ever wanted would be an iPhone. It's just effing brilliant. And I had the 4S and my dad has S3 and I don't like them over my XS so it is saying something. Regarding updates, Sony is the best and your most faithful servant. I don't have anything to look forward to with an Apple update but with every Android update, there is this wonderful anticipation that can only be felt and not described.

Everyone has their own opinions so if you feel its not smooth get a sgs3 its so damn smooth. I feel that its smooth cause I came from a x10, I thought that was smooth till I got this phone now I realize how laggy the x10 was
Thanks for posting the link, haven't been checking it so I didn't know there was a new update coming
