[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is this tablet quality?
I'm looking for an android tablet right now and i'm not sure if this is the right one for me. It's $300.00 at Best Buy which is a nice deal for the specs it has in my opinion.
Should I get it? Or are there any better ones?
It also says that it has 8GB DDR2 RAM!?!? Is that true?

I'm fairly pleased with my WIFI version.
It has 1GB of RAM (775 MB usable for me)
I picked mine up from Best Buy as an open box item (+ $50 off sale), so the cost was very reasonable to me and definitely convinced me to pull the trigger on this purchase. That's still a fairly good deal IMO.
Options for customization/development with this tablet are currently limited. However, you can expect a legit ICS update for this tablet from Samsung sometime in the near future.
What purposes do you have in mind?

I plan to play apps and watch movies. I plan to use this tablet for fun. Such as apps like Dungeon Defenders, Zenonia, etc...
Some high intensive apps. Will it handle it?

I've tested 720p and 1080p mp4 hd movies which played smoothly off SD or USB flash drive with the OTG adapter.
I also tried out Dungeon Defenders, and that was also smooth. It took a long time to download.
This tablet will probably suit your needs.
I hope this is helpful.

Viewpad 10e

I've been lucky enough to snag a Viewpad 10e from Argos in the UK... Struggling to find any forums specifically for this pad though.
In a nutshell, its a great piece of hardware for £200 slightly let down by stuttery software. Very iPad like but with Android gingerbread.
Anyone else out there have any experience with this tab yet? Anyone know of any plans for it to get it's own forum/development community?
Cheers.

Dude, return the tablet right now. Boycott viewsonic!
Its been over 24hrs with new toy now. Will be posting a review soon. I honestly like the look and feel so much that I'm selling my Galaxy Tab 10. I'll have some money left over as well cause the Viewpad is so cheaply priced. All that extra processor power is not needed for me, I basically use the tab for web browsing, a few notes, check the weather and the kids play angry birds! This pad is definitely suited to the job.

Ditto. For that price, you are better to go with a much wider support device like the Kindle Fire or Nook Color. Don't expect your new toy to get any substantial update to improve it beyond what it is now. The gTablet community has already been bitten by Viewsonic false promises. Your device will most likely had the same fate.
PS: a no name brand tablet from China can do all you want at an even lower price. Did you choose Viewsonic for the peace of mind of a name brand? Viewsonic don't make their own tablet. They outsource the manufacturing, the software and the support. All they really interest in is take your money.

Honestly, I was really impressed by the response I had recently from their support dept. I really like the device and I have been through a few to say the least. Seems like it could be quite hackable and I may just use it to learn some new programming skills myself! (If I can drum up some support). In my experience, every forum/thread has loads of people frustrated by lack of support from the manufacturers/resllers but for me, the point of these forums is finding help... Ill keep my fingers crossed that the OEM is discovered soon and after that finding some hacks should get easier.
Third warning about Viewsonic, their products suffer longevity shortfalls. I am now the 3rd person telling you they have the consumer integrity of a wombat. Don't hold your breath waiting for anyone to pick it up and think it will be differently. So many people got burned via the g tablet and it's abhorrent lack of updates from the manufacturer (which when it comes to things like drivers etc for future OS upgrades becomes a critical part of the equation) not many people who have been around the android block are going to make another purchase from Viewsonic so you could very well be alone for the foreseeable future in this purchase. I don't even like having a Viewsonic monitor on my desk at work anymore. Again, take what you are hearing at face value, Viewsonic + android = meh. I enjoyed my g tablet when i purchased it and it does almost all that I need but I hoped for more and have gotten less. Keep it if you like, but 6 months from now when you are looking at another tablet you are going to be hard pressed to find anyone to buy your Viewsonic. The poor reputation flags are there already.
Keep in mind, Viewsonic is the same company that came to XDA saying they wanted feedback and input from this community about the g tablet. That was spring of this year and not a single thing has changed. They did that one firmware update in April and since then it has been nothing but pushed changes that then get pulled back.
Keep it if you are happy with it, I just wouldn't expect anything in terms of a large community ever coming of one of their devices.
It's been almost a year since they promised they'd release an update. Every time I've asked them about update, the only reply I've gotten is "we're working on it." I dare you to find any report of a different response than that.
Viewsonic needs to go back to producing nothing but display monitors and projectors. This company is not ready yet to play with the big boys in the computing market.
US vs UK - not exactly the same...
The G-Tablet was a US only product?!
The Viewpad 10e is only in the UK so far..... 9.7" IPS panel for £199, 9mm thick looks good value to me if your needs are not too demanding
Cant get my 10e to play videos from iplayer, any idea as to why not?
I decided to try one...
Works on live streaming for me from the app but not the others, think it could be to do with the Flash player version, read recently about other tablet users having issues with bandwidth / setting local storage to 0...
Which app did you use, couldn't find one in the 1mobile app store that came on the device

BBC iPlayer 1.04 apk from the web. It still is only working for me with live TV, Flash version 10.3, Flash 11.0 wasn't working...
Will play around with the different versions in the office today
Ok so I now have the Viewpad 10e working with BBC iPlayer.
I used BBC iPlayer 1.0.4 & Flash 10.3.185.25
I put these into a zip file on 4shared, not sure if I am allowed to share the link or not..
Hello
I'm very keen on the Viewpad 10e myself. Has anyone tried out the multimedia side of it? it would be great t be able to play 1080p movies, etc. By the sounds of the 3D stuff that comes with it, it should be a decent GPU in it, would be nice to know how it does.
Custom ROM
Does anyone know how to install a custom ROM on the device?
Hi all
I'm thinking of getting one of these too. But I'm a bit concerened about the 'dated' SC A8 CPU and the dated OS?
Some of the things I will want to do on this is video calling using Skype (yes, I know there are other alternatives, but it has to be Skype) and playing DivX/Xvid movies and some .MKV movies. Could anyone tell me if it will be good enough? I am quite impressed by the dimensions and the screen, but if the specs can't keep up then I'm thinking of a cheap and chunky Tegra 2 tablet like the POV which is actually £10 cheaper and I'll put a custom ViewComb 3.2 ROM on it...
Any suggestions/opinions?
Does anyone know how to root the device?
Just got one for my daughter.
First impressions : well-made bit of kit with a great IPS screen. worth it for the hardware, I would say.
Moon reader pro is great on it, as is perfect viewer for comics and pdf's.
Can't get the video calling working for some reason. Anyone had any joy with this ?
Have tried Tango and Fring. In both cases, the FFC doesn't seem to switch on. You can see the the other person on it, but they can't see you.
Also, with Tango, the mic is switched off, and can't be switched back on.
Some sort of firmware shenanigans going on here. Had a quick chat with Viewsonic customer support just now, who will email me back.
Bit concerned by the negative comments on this thread !
Wanted the archos 101 as HMV were doing it for £129 , but just missed the boat, and then this came to my attention in Argos. Hope I haven't landed a dud !
Well, so far, have managed to get all her bits on it. Their version of market is a bit limited, but there is enough to get you started. Go launcher was a must, after having it on my Galaxy S2 phone, and it seems to cope ok. Formatted some of her films as mp4's and the shipped 'vortex player' handles them well.
Video calling would have been icing on the cake really.
Oh yeah, and whatsapp functionality, but there are ways around that I am looking into now.
Overall so far - promising.
Root and custom rom's would really maximise this thing's potential.
Oh yeah, and won't talk to my macbook pro over bluetooth- first device ever to do that.

Nook Tablet for 199$ @ebay

Guys there a deal for today at ebay.com for Nook Tablet from B&N that gives it for only 199$
yep.. couldnt refuse at that price point.. they got rid of the coupon.. so just $199 outright.. so saves on taxes if your state requires collecting it.. debated.. but i just cant say no to a deal like that.. loved the original NC.. was a solid piece of kit.. so i know i'll love the tablet..
I would get it as well but I live outside USA so.... :/
I jumped on this too. I've been following various websites for a better price and this is by far the best I've found (without having to do any pricematch/coupon shenanegans).
And the offer runs to Feb 23, apparently. Hope this establishes the new price point !
B&N had to cut prices, Asus memo will be out very soon. And at $250 for a quad-core, with camera, GPS, and BlueTooth, it will eclipse the Nook Tablet and all bargain tablets.
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't call this a "bargain". NT cannot recognize more than 2 points on the screen at any time, the wifi is buggy at best, the internal memory is almost not accessible. All in all, it's a good ereader. And that's it. The Kindle Fire is a far superior device. My only grip with the KF is that its memory is limited to 8 gigs and no microSD extension possible.

Well I for one am still very happy with mine. The wifi bug isn't that bad, and I have confidence the devs will get it under control. I have no problem accessing ask the space I need, and the battery life is incredible.
Having great dev support is not something to take lightly. The guys working on the NT are doing a great job. My Samsung Fascinate didn't have a usable CM7 until it had been out for almost a year. I wouldn't put it past them to get better multi-touch support for this device as well.
All in all, it's a great device, and the great dev support makes it even better.

I thought the Kindle Fire only recognized 2 points on the touch screen as well. At least thats what many review for the game Nova (kindle fire edition) on the Amazon app store say. http://www.amazon.com/Near-Orbit-Va...1?s=mobile-apps&ie=UTF8&qid=1329581136&sr=1-1
Hi couple of questions before i decide to take the plunge
1)Have the devs found out how to use the 12GB space that BN owns
2)How easy is this to root?
thanks!
I ordered it two days ago, can't wait to get it in the mail now.
The B&N - not a good deal at $250?
Oh, come on. There's always something "new" in the horizon - better, faster and cheaper (ie, the Quad Core Asus). And if you wait long enough for the Asus, something *even* better will be "just around the corner".
The B&N is, for me, an*incredible* deal. I own a Galaxy SII, a Motorola Atrix (heavily modded) and I got an iPad 2 at the office. I can't believe how much I got when I bought my Nook for $250. I'd definitely do it again. It's *not* only a good eReader - it's a tremendous game machine (I haven't yet found a single game with any sort of lag), a great browser, a perfect multimedia device... the list goes on and on. IMHO, I'd rather have the Nook than my iPad, it's far, far more useful right now (rooted, with GoLaunch EX and minor tweaks). CM7 will only make things better.
Its problems are trivial. No true multitouch? Why would it be a dealbreaker? Wi-Fi bug? I've seen it every once in a while - my HP laptop is far, far worse. What else is there? Nothing. Again, to me, it delivers far more than I ever expected out of it.
I've seen cheaper tablets around - some chinese junk running at 1.5 GHz (LOL). They look cheap and have no warranties whatsoever. For me, the NT and the KF are what tablets are all about, and I'd rather own either one of them than wait for something that may or may not come out soon (the Asus Quad Core).

Well said i think exactly as you do and not because the a new tablet with more specifications with same or better price is round the corner means the quality will be good and the development for it will be fast, so far with the nook tablet devs have done an amazing job far before than what i ever expected. There is always people that do not appreciate the work that is being done and on top of that they ask for more, unfortunately XDA has got many of those, its a shame.
I think the nook tablet is an investment and i feel very happy with it, i will for sure enjoy it for a while and once another good deal like the NT comes out with decent hardware (not Chinese junk as @fjhuerta say) and green lights for development maybe then i would think in upgrade.

1) yes
2) very easy...check put the development forum and you'll see the one click root. In a few days CM7 will be released in greater fashion than previously. In a month or so the nook tablet and its downfalls will be completely absent. The devs have been incredible with this device and it's only getting better and better. I purchased mine on release day and my love for it grows by the day. I've owned the kindle fire as well...but I did return it because it lacked the ram power of the nook tablet, and I could certainly tell(yes I was rooted on it as well).
Trust your gut. In the long run, I think if you choose the nook tablet, you'll be extremely happy.

I wonder if this deal involves the new model of NT with only 8G of internal memory (instead of 16G)? This model can also be purchased from the BN website:

take note of the 512mb ram as well so not only is the 8 gig model less storage space...but also down to 512mb system ram. I was hoping they'd keep the 1 gig ram but just lower the 'hdd' shame not :/

Nexus 10 vs Kindle Fire HD 8.9

What are your thoughts? I know how hard the KF is to modify and it will lack support, but to the average user who will watch movies, surf the web, and play games...what differences will there be??
Things I know:
The KF has a smaller screen...

- Movies will be clearer on the Nexus 10
- Surfing the web should be better on the Nexus 10 (more screen estate + higher resolution)
- Playing games should be better on the Nexus 10 (Android, better graphics chip (I think), more screen estate + higher resolutions)

What makes you say that in particular? Due to the larger screen of the N10, I agree. However, the 1920x1200 resolution of the Fire HD 8.9 should play anything as clearly aside from the size; it can do 1080p without losing pixels.
I do worry that the extra pixels will be costly on the N10 - more computation, choppiness (especially in games), shorter battery life. I don't know the specifics, but I presume the N10 will have to scale to 1080p. The 16:10 analog to 1080p is 1920x1200, which means the N10 has 1/3 more pixels in each dimension. So some sort of transformation would have to be done to stretch the image. Since this isn't a simple whole number multiple, doesn't this require additional computation?
I expect it'd be similar to the rMBP. If you run at the default resolution. It basically draws a 1440x900 resolution at 2x in each dimension giving 2880x1800. If you choose to run at an effective resolution at 1920x1200, it computes a 3840x2400 image and scales it down if you're in HiDPI mode. People say it chugs in this mode.
I'm curious on how all this works and which apps/situations will result in performance costs... anyone have a good resource? It's not like this is a new problem; 720p has to be scaled to fit in 1080p screens.

Yeah, resource would be first-hand experience. I watch movies and play games on my N10 and none of what you assume about choppiness and such exist. In fact, it's probably -the- best experience I've had with a handheld device. I stopped using my 17" laptop to watch movies and watch them on my N10 because of it's portability and ability to reproduce stunning results on a much smaller screen. It really does look that great when watching high-def movies [720p 1080p etc].
Why is it even a question that a smaller tablet with a lower resolution might be a better buy than the Nexus 10?
Nothing I've used in terms of tablets is on par with the screens and videos the N10 can produce. For those who do not have one, if you get a chance to play with one at a retail store soon. Please do and compare it to other tablets there. You'll see that it is incredibly obvious when it comes to media that the N10 is better. At least in my own opinion.

Video playback, in most common scenarios, should be better in fire's screen, due to pixel extrapolation (at least with usual formats, like 1080p).
N10 should outperform fire. In battery, we should wait for tests, but i'm not that much confident about N10 beating kindle fire.
Lot of good feedback so far. I know this is probably a little tough since there's no way for a hands on comparison yet. As far as outperforming goes the KF is supposed to have a pretty nice processor right?

Don't forget Miracast support in the future for the Nexus 10, Android updates, and access to the Play Store. The KF is a forked ICS build will never get JB. You get a whole lot more for hte extra $100. Really a no brainer unless you absolutely can't afford the extra $100 but then you should not have even posted this question.
OK, so it's not QUITE the Nexus 10 vs Kindle Fire HD+ benchmark that we'll see posted eventually, but here's what I was able to extrapolate:
The Kindle Fire HD is using an OMAP 4470, which isn't a bad piece of silicon but looks to be hedged out in just about all areas by the Exynos 5250, at least from these two benchmarks that I'm using to compare:
OMAP 4470 in an Archos 101 XS
Nexus 10 & 4 Performance Preview
It seems that the Exynos 5250 is capable of pushing the fun resolution we're enjoying, but it pays a price in some of the benchmarks.Still good numbers, but not iPad topping.

Don't worry I can afford it. I should have mentioned though I'm comparing 32gb so the price difference is a bit more than $100 but money is not a factor. I just saw a quadrant score for the KF 8.9 of 27xx and laughed but if they perform the same it won't matter I guess. Never getting JB sounds like it'll never get any update unless it's for the KF os is that right

My wife has a KF HD (7"), and I just got the Nexus 10. The KF HD is definitely good for the casual user, but the Nexus 10 is considerably better for surfing the web, watching movies and gaming. Bone stock, the Antutu benchmark score was in the high 9000s (my stock GS3 normally scores in the low 6000s), if you care for that sort of thing. Let's not forget stock Android, with timely OS updates directly from Google!
By the way, nice avatar and signature banner! \m/
N10 is a beast and so its somewhat of a no brainier but honestly if you just want to mostly read ebooks and do some movie watching, the Kindle Fire HD will do the job. It will come with Kindle exclusive library from Amazon that will offer features free books and rentals only for kindle devices. Its form factor is also better in ways of smaller size and lighter in weight. The N10 won't be the Brest for long ebook readings due to its size and weight. The screen on the Kindle Fire HD has a good screen and you won't feel like you made a bad choice. Its a lot cheaper and more portable. I would just go with the Kindle Fire HD if your use for it is just casual stuff like ebook reading ans light movie watching.

I would actually prefer the Nook HD+'s form factor - I think 9" is just the right size, and the 4:3 aspect ratio is better for reading. Unfortunately it doesn't look like the Nook HD+ is getting much love on xda, so development will be hard to come by. I'll probably stick to the Nexus 10 in that case...
>What are your thoughts?
Depends on the buyer. KFHD 8.9 will be big with mainstream peeps simply for its $299 base price. I think it'll fare well against both iPad4 and iPad Mini this Q4. N10 is $499 at retail and will be a tough sell. Highest-res isn't enough.
For XDA peeps wanting CM love, KFHD is a disaster. Hashcode dude is apparently heading up the BL-bypass effort, and progress has been glacial. Peep at KFHD dev forum to see. At this pace, KFHD will get custom ROM at about same time as KF3 release. That's the problem. These things have 8-10 months' shelf life before being superceded by new toys.
My opinion is that N10 is best of 10" Androids to date, but compromises made to shoehorn in the high-res screen may be to large to swallow, starting with the $499 retail price ($399 is Play Store-only). Nexus and Android fans will be happy with N10; others, not so much. Still, for XDA'ers there's no comparison. N10 kills KFHD.
For XDA fans, an alternative to N10 would be Nook HD+ (9", 1920x1280 or 3:2 AR). Its bootloader is apparently unsigned, and custom ROMs should be more doable. It also has SD slot, and is $299 for 32GB (vs $369 for KFHD and $499 for N10). Negs include 2.4GHz-only wifi, proprietary port, and no HDMI without a clunky $40 adapter. Most would pooh-pooh B&N's wimpy eco as its main weakness, but for XDA peeps wanting custom ROM action, eco is irrelevant. At $269 base, it would be an awesome reader & web browser. Games, may be not so awesome.
Some prelim dev action is going on for HD+ in the Nook Color forum. Let's hope it picks up where NC left off. (Actually, NC is getting CM10 nightlies, so it still hasn't kicked the bucket just yet.)

$399 is retail price (retail store or Play store) for the 16 GB Nexus 10.
$499 is retail price (retail store or Play store) for the 32 GB Nexus 10.
You are talking $299 vs. $399 (Kindle Fire 8.9 vs. Nexus 10....both 16 GB models) $384 vs. $499 if discussing the 32 GB models offered (without special offers on the KF).
>$399 is retail price (retail store or Play store) for the 16 GB Nexus 10.
>$499 is retail price (retail store or Play store) for the 32 GB Nexus 10.
B&M retailers are only selling N10 32GB SKU; 16GB SKU is Play Store only. Mainstream buyers don't buy expensive toys without a hands-on test, and the bulk of sales will be from B&M sources. Hence most will see only the $499 SKU, which has no price advantage against iPad. As 2011 has taught, Android tabs have neither the eco nor the build quality to go price parity with iPad. N10 isn't an exception.
It does get somewhat complicated. Walmart has dropped Amazon KFHDs from its stores because it views Amazon as competition (KFHDs are still carried by other B&Ms). Showrooming also factors in, the practice Amazon popularized by urging users to window-shop at a B&M before looking for a cheaper price online.
Still, the bottom line is that for most buyers (at B&M), all they'll see is $499 N10 vs $499 iPad vs $299 KFHD 8.9. N10 is between a rock and a hard place. The price-sensitive will go for KFHD, and the "quality-first" will go for iPad.
I want N10 to succeed as much as anyone here, but that doesn't factor in my assessment of its retail performance. Likewise, I want Nook HD+ to do well--unsigned bootloader, yay!--but I expect B&N's abysmal eco will sink it at retail. Depending on how Microsoft manages its $300 mil investment in NookCo, I expect (as with many) that this will be the last of the Nook line for Android, with future models being Wooks.

I don't get why you say android tabs don't have the eco nor build quality as the iPad. Last I checked, not only does this screen smash the newest iPad in both resolution, but as well in PPI, lets talk about the the better processor, the better memory, the better gpu, and over all performance. Hands down ipad has lots of catch up to do. Then the build quality you say. There is no comparison in my opinion. This tablet not only feels much better when holding, but it looks butter. The front facing speakers, to the HDMI out, miniusd verses the proprietary plugs apple uses serves most users better. Now let's talk about the Eco. The ecosystem is better in android as well. Why you ask? Well simple. Its open source. We have cyanogenmod, evervolv, aokp, para, classicnerd, then just a slew of developers already modifying source code to make everything better and more customizable then any apple product created.
For goodness sakes, look at the HP touchpad, android ICS is running as good on that device as if android came stock, guess what, a worldwide community of developers have come together to make a $149 tablet worth every penny of $300+. Imagine what this tablet will become when pogo cables come to light, docking stations, and more. The hardware inside this device is capable of USB 3.0 which will open advancements for a continued growth to this device for years to come.
So let's reflect on this some. Hands down, without hesitation this device will be prevalent for years to come. The kfhd will lose because you can't even get a bl on it, the apple iPad will be on version 5-6 before it will come close to having what this does. So,you will be able to buy this device for $399 at any big box store soon enough which will give people another reason to jump on this train. Who wants to spend $699 for an ipud or $299 for a kfhd when this will do everything and more for way less then apple will ever sell for. No brainer.....
Don't mean to sound defensive, just hate it when people say ipads have better build quality. Its not even a comparison.

People can have different opinions about what's "better." There is no wrong or right. What matters isn't what you or I think, but how many others think the same way as either of us.
Yours is the prototypical XDA view, and I empathize with it. But XDA isn't representative of the buying public, which is what mine above conveys.
There is a simple way to resolve the difference: Wait for a few months and see how well N10 fares against KFHD and iPad for Q4. There'll be data enough from the blogosphere.
I think N10 is a good first step for Android tablet eco, but Goog will need additional steps. I see it as an iterative process.
I can agree it will be up to sales. I don't necessarily agree with the blogoshpere. There are a lot of opinionated ones basing their judgement on a nexus 10 that didn't have the final system on it.
On a pure hardware and design standpoint, they hit a grandslam in the bottom of the 9th in game 7. There really is no comparison on the hardware to either of the other devices. That pure fact.
As far as the ecosystem, it will take some time for app developers to get on board with the tablet world for android. The actual os is pretty advanced and offers a lot of everyday users more and more with each update. I would like to see the number of android verses iOS users in the phone world. As android continues to build solid advancements in phones, so does the software and apple's big sales are mainly due to higher prices. I'm sure all around android vs apple, it would be a much closer number. Not to mention, we are only in update 2 in a tablet format, apple is in update 4. Can only imagine where update 4 for android will lead us.
And I do have more of a biased oppinion. I hate crapple. They became a sue happy company to block Samsung and HTC, that was a terrible move. Showing they really didn't have an answer to the consistant updates to what android phones do. We are having dozens and dozens of phones made based on android, dozens of tablets as well while apple hangs their hat on now 3 devices.
You'd think that if only having 3 devices, they would have the best of everything but they don't. As far as the kindle fire bd, while its a good device without question, there remains this single question.
Why have a kindle bd fire when you can have an android that can read and buy kindle books? They won't stand a chance in the future unless they change over to either iOS or android. Possibly windows 8 RT. There isn't anything on a kindle you can't do on the others yet there are many things you can't do. That in itself will sink their dreams.
The end of the day, the nexus series offers a great choice on tablets for a fraction of the price of apple. And a little bit more then the kindle but more customizable.
Last, where can you find this $499 iPad 4? The apple store is $629-$829. No where near the price of even the most expensive nexus 10.
Good convo tho. It's nice to see a fair approach to all three sides.

Nexus 9 16 for 400$ or nexus 9 32 for 500$

Is this tablet worth the asking price? I currently returned my Nvidia Shield Tablet because the quality felt a little meh, and the screen kept showing distortion by pushing it.
Any thoughts and suggestions?
I would really like to stick to Android and this seems to be the closest to the quality of the Air 2.
Would I be ok with the 16 GB?
not worth it for most people imho. lotsa problems if you check all the existing threads. somehow the majority in the threads, including me, are only getting 5-7 hours or screen time web browsing when the pro reviews show ~9hrs (videos are fine - 10hrs+), memory leaks needing daily reboots (which could be fixed by a patch), light bleed, removal of the ability to adjust the volumes without going into settings (you can only adjust the volume of what's being used at the time you press the volume button - ringer, alerts, media aren't expandable).
i still love mine for now, but i'd never tell anyone to buy one until google patches the software problems. the hardware is decent but far from premium. i'd say at $250 it's a good deal, $300 is fair, but at $400 there are other options.
i got it because i just got my hands on a old galaxy tab 8.9. i used to have one when they first came out and i loved the size. i have a note 8, but kinda not digging the size any more. i considered the 8.4, but the nexus at 8.9 - 4:3 is as tall as the 8.4 @ 16:10 and as wide as a 10.1 @ 16:10. for me it makes for better browsing and reading. some people prefer not having black bars in movies, but the size of the image will be the same on an 8.4 16:10 as it is on the 4:3 nexus.
also, the speakers are nice. i haven't had a tablet with sound this good since my archos 101t.

I have the 32gb Nexus 9. I bought an open box 16gb first but I donated that to my daughter and got the 32gb. Having said that I have noticed no build quality issues with either one of them. It looks good and feels very solid. I have owned many different devices and the Nexus 9 is built better than most. In order for me to use a 16gb device it has to have a microsd card slot.

I hate the huge markup on the 32 gb but its the way to go. would prefer 64gb if they had any.
THanks for reply guys. I reserved a white 32GB model but then saw the 600$ price tag with taxes here in Toronto...for that money I could literally get a laptop
I wish it was around 300$ for the 16 GB and 400 for the 32 and I'd totally be ok with that...but at 529.99 I might just get a video card at this point .
I really like the design of the nexus 9 and the look is very beautiful though! I'm sure most software problems will be patched but I expected lollipop to be a smoother transition.
I am in Toronto got the 32gig version, never regretted it.

I, too, wish the Nexus 9 was cheaper. Heck, I wish most things in life are cheaper.
With that said, I had my Nexus 9 16GB since almost day 1 (day 3 to be exact) and have been loving it. Unlike some people who have complained on the forum, I am fortunately among the Nexus 9 owners who never had a single problem.
You may be able to get a laptop at around $600 but it would be a crappy one and it would still be a laptop and not a tablet, which have very different functions. Some of the cons of a laptop being heavier, harder to just pick up and use, lack of touch screen... etc. If you DO for some reason want an "actual computer" for work, then no tablet is ideal for you.
I got the 16 GB also. Instead of forking over extra cash for additional 16 GB space I put the money towards a WiFi HD. All I need now is cifs support.
I'm thinking of Getting the 16 GB model, then using an OTG cable and putting a usb stick when ever i need to watch movies.
I'll just put minor TV Shows or Movies on the tablet that I watch on subway (although I watch mostly on my phone on subway).
Everyone bought the 16 GB version though LOL, I need to find one
@woshiweili
You're missing the point of what I mean though, I'm not trying to make it sound Like I want everything to be cheap, I just want everything to be fair.
The price is very Expensive. for the same price you can get a Samsung Tab S which has a superior Screen and the addition of microSD, also 3 GB ram.
This tab should have been 300 price for standard and 400 for 32 GB...also 680+ for LTE? I'm sorry but no LTE card is worth an additional 150$
Anyways I'm going to go pick one up today hopefully if I can find one.

Get one of these microSD card readers:
http://www.meenova.com/
It is very small so it will not get in the way as bad as a OTG cable and usb drive.

You will need something like ESfile Explorer to see the device when you use it on your Nexus but it works perfectly.

That's no problem, to watch movies I usually use ES anyways since it also has root access.
i know with archos media player you can index just about any non-root folder, even networked shares (paid version, dunno about the free) and other media players shouldn't have any problems directly accessing a mounted drive.
i considered using my otg cables but i didn't want to lose the ability to charge and use an external drive if it ever came down to it. helluva lot cheaper thought, lol.
I was lucky enough to find an open box Nexus 9 32GB so I saved give or take about 75$. So I ended up paying 25$ extra or so for an extra 16 GB. Will open it when i get home.
Thanks for help guys!
dunno where you got it from, but amazon has the 32 for 429 and bb will price match. I got my 16gb for 350 plus tax new.

As you can see from my profile pic I'm from Canada, and Best Buy will only price match with the Canadian Amazon. Either way I came out about the same with the open box, the only downside is that it was opened but looking it over it's literally brand new.
Don't rule out Swappa. I bought a brand new, sealed 16GB Black Nexus 9 for $330 shipped/no tax, and went on online chat with Google Play Store to transfer ownership of the serial number to me.
Hope you enjoy it. I've made the decision to keep mine and let go of the note 8. Gonna miss using the s pen when taking recipe note while cooking. Lecture notes and a standard capacitive pen will make do until thet make a 9" note. I don't regret my purchase and like the 4:3 more than I thought I would.
I ended up returning it because it had a lot of screen bleed. I'm just going to wait and see what happens when the nvidia x1 comes out.
Thanks for replies guys!!
I went through too many exchanges with the nvidia shield to do it with this one...and this is around 200$ more. I'll just wait and see of any revisions fix the problem.

Should i (or would you) buy Nexus 9 now or wait some time for new devices?

Hello everyone,
Sorry for pretty dumb question, but i hope you could give me advice! I'll explain my situation a bit, i currently own 10" Chinese Onda tablet, performance is pretty awful, battery life also (~1 hr of reading/browsing can drain 40%), i use it mainly for browsing and reading because gaming is impossible (from one side it is good, because i can spend more time with my family ) ) i never take it out, mainly because of battery life..
So from one side i can live with it with my needs like reading, books and browsing, from the other side it lag's like hell, crashes and battery, well as i said...
So i tried to look for some more descent alternative (one of it could be eReader, but then i still would need another device for lazy browsing or some apps, so i'am more on the tablet side). So i checked what is on the market today and i could get Nexus 9 16 GB for about 300 EUR on Amazon. And as BlackFriday is landing i'am hoping for some discounts, so i'am wandering, should i grab Nexus 9 if it would be available for let's say 250 EUR? What concerns' me is how future proof will it be? Dual-core + 2GB ram seems to be pretty low for today. What i like that it is supported both by Google bot Custom ROM's, so while it is popular device it will have at least some support. But maybe it is too late to buy one today and be patient and wait for future device?
I don't feel like paying more than 300 EUR in any case for tablet, though i could afford it i just don't justify it as proper "investment"
So, that it! Thans for your help and opinion.
UPD: What about new NVIDIA SHIELD K1? What is your opinion, seems like super deal for 200EUR? Maybe except screen size and aspect ratio.
300 Euros is way too expensive for this tablet. Even 250 is too much. If this tablet had a Nexus 5 level of speed and smoothness, it would be worth it. Unfortunately, on stock, it doesn't. As they haven't sorted it out properly in a year now, I don't think they ever will. :crying:
In the UK at the moment, Argos are selling the 16GB version for £150. This is a more reasonable price.
If you are on a budget, I'd also consider the LG V500. Its still on 4.4.2, but the performance is great and it has an SD Card slot. If you know where to look, you can pick one up for £100/145 Euro. the V510 from the US is even better. :victory:

Hi, thanks for your input. I can't find any deal at Argos for £150 :/ About LG, i don't like ones that drop support for their devices.
What everyone think about new NVIDIA SHIELD K1? It will have Marshmallow, 3D performance should be awesome, also i should be able to utilize my GTX 970 here, and it cost £150, only downside for me is screen size, but it is just IMHO, i never used such aspect ratio.

Yes I take your point regarding LG. If you could get a V510, its a GPE device making it almost Nexus.
I cant comment on the Nvidia shield. It does seem strange to me however that the original Nexus 7 had memory issues and the Nexus 9 has memory issues. The both used Nvidia SoC as oppose to Snapdragon. Maybe just a coincidence? I've never had any issues with devices using SD SoC.

V510 from US would cost around 200EUR, and GPE seems to be dead already
New shield seems very interesting device... My hands are itching
I like the Nex9.
I bought the 32GB for $305 shipped and got a nice $12 case, so basically $320 total and I am very pleased. I was mainly concerned with battery life as I like to sometimes leave it alone for 3-4 days and want to have a charge.
I am on Pure Nexus ROM, but even on stock mra58n build I was able to leave it overnight and only lose 3-4% battery. So I can leave it around for say 5 days and still have at least 70% battery.
I get around 6 hours SOT so far from my use but I've only had it a short while so I expect it to only get better as it calibrates.
It has its faults, and something better I am sure may be on the way, but you may find a great deal on black Friday and I would jump on it.
When I saw the 40% off from HTC I did and am glad I did.
Best of luck.
I was a frustrated N9 owner until MM. I still can't believe it! The lag has not returned as it always had within a month of each of my six wipes over the past 10 mos. I tried DU and ran Elementalx. Lag remained and reboots (up to 3x daily) continued. Each flash was a complete wipe. Chrome (I use beta) is still a battery hog--probably what causes the heat, but it's my choice to use it. My tab works the way it always should have. I'm running xposed with gravity box. Everything is running well. For the first time, I can recommend this tablet--especially if you can grab the next HTC 40% off deal over Thanksgiving.
