HBOOT Question - HTC Rezound

I see instructions to put a PH98IMG.zip file on my SD card, then relock the phone, blah blah blah.
My problem is that if a PH98IMG.zip file is present, it seems to automatically get applied. If I decline to apply it, then I can't do anything else because the phone will just reboot.
Can anyone clarify this? Is there a way to access fastboot and recovery with a PH98IMG.zip file present in the root of the SD?

nope, with that file on the SD card it will automatically try to apply it.
If you've already applied the update, just boot normally and then remove the file. If you have no system on your phone currently, you'll have to remove the PH98IMG.zip file from the SD card, or simply remove the SD card to get to fastboot or recovery.

This does seem to imply that whatever you do with a PH98IMG.zip file had better leave a bootable system. Because otherwise you're not going to be removing it.
I guess if you have to you can pull the card and remove the file with another system...

Yeah, thats usually what I do in that situation. I have a Asus Transformer, I'll just pop the SD card in there and remove the file that way. Thats why people are sick of having to use PH98IMG.zip files to apply kernels and stuff, but its the reality with S-ON and there's no current way around it unless you prefer using fastboot instead of PH98IMG.zip files whenever possible.

also in recovery, amonra has an option to delete any PB98IMG.zip you may have on sdcard

I have reliably used the "partial insertion" method of booting into recovery many times. With that, you pull the battery, slide the SD card out until it almost falls out, hold the battery at an angle so that it touches the contacts at the bottom, then press power + volume down, select recovery, then slide the a card in and finish inserting the battery after it starts to load the recovery. It sounds harder than it is. I've done it probably 20 times and only list the battery contact or had SD card fall out a couple times.

True, but you can't get to recovery if there's a PH98IMG.zip file already on the sdcard. Well, at least you can't from a cold boot... I haven't tried to see if you could get there from ADB with the reboot recovery command while the phone is booted......

ahh good point.
i forget cos I'm always near my computer and have the luxury of using "adb reboot" or "adb reboot recovery", those commands have saved me from a battery pull sooooo many times lol.

I do that all the time while in the fly. It's a bit tricky at times but always gets the job done so I can always restore a backup I've made

[q] help please!!!

So I am a noob and I may not know enough to be rooted, but I love the custom ROM's they work so much better than stock. Anyway, I started using the new Theory of Ginger Candy ROM and all was going well, until I downloaded the power options download that lets you restart into recovery from the power options. I downloaded it and then rebooted into recovery using ROM manager then I installed the .zip file for the advanced power options. Then, I rebooted and it freezes up at the lightning bolt. I let it sit on there for 20 min thinking maybe it was just going to take a long time then I did a battery pull and rebooted and got stuck again at the lightning bolt. Next I tried to pull the battery and then reboot into recovery by holding the volume down key and power key at the same time. This reboots into bootloader and automatically runs bootloader and then it asks if I want to update. How can I stop it from running bootloader automatically and then be able to scroll down into recovery? Or do I just flash the Radio again and will that take me back to a stock ROM that is with the radio, and then I can restore my backup I made before installing this advance power option .zip. Thanks for your help guys!
Sounds like you still have a PG05IMG.zip on your sdcard. Can you pop the card out and remove it manually on your computer? Dunno if ADB's active during recovery, but you might also be able to get a shell via USB and delete the file that way and reboot.
Otherwise, you might be able to flash the file that currently exists, but I don't know what that's going to do; depends on which version is on your sdcard.

Go to Frys or Radio Shack or best buy and buy yourself an SD card reader. Dont buy the most expensive one, just buy the cheapest one you can find. Take it home, slap the SD card in there and put it in the first USB slot you find. Open up the SD card on your computer and delete the PG05IMG.zip file. Youll see it at the bottom of the list if you organize by type.
Sorry buddy, I know I am the one that directed you to that post about the advanced power menu. It worked for me, I am really sorry this messed things up for you. In the past I have had a similar problem and as mentioned, getting that image file off the root of your sdcard is key. I too would recommend a microsd reader for your computer and making sure you rename or delete the image file. This will allow you to get back into CWM.
Props to you too for being a noob and still knowing enough to make a backup!
Thanks for you help everyone. I did make a back-up but I couldn't log into CWM recovery with the PGOIMG file on my SD card, and I didn't have a microsd card reader or anyway to plug the sd card into my computer to get the file off, so I found a tricky little way to do it. I pulled the SD card just barley out and held the battery in at an angle so that it didn't push the sd card back in. Then with the sd card out I was able to get into recovery. Then came the tricky part of getting the sd card back in without loosing a conection with the battery. I ended up using a bent paper clip to push the sd card into place. After a few attempts I was able to get the sd card in place and the battery back in place while staying in cwm. The next problem was that it sitll wouldn't recognize my sd card. I went into mounts and tried to unmount and remount the sd card with no luck, but then I noticed in the advanced options there is the option to reboot recovery. This allowed me to reboot back into recovery and then it saw my sd card. So after all that I was able to restore my back-up version of B1.7. I now promptly remove the PGOIMG file after flashing a radio.

[Q] Help Please!!!

I posted this question in the general forum but now I am posting it here because I think this is probably the more appropriate forum. Uh... Yep! I think that we've found the problem! Ha!
If you don't have a SD card reader there is a trick over in the General forum for how to get around that!
Thanks for you help everyone. I now know to delete the PGOIMG file from my sd card promptly after flashing a radio. need help please, won't boot past HTC logo

well, i hope someone here will be able to assist me... having troubles.
I was previously running SHIFT A0SP without any issues and figured I would give Gingeritis 3D a shot since I've been using the same rom for a while.
Well, I downloaded the ROM zip, confirmed the MD5 and then flashed (after wiping everything). After reboot, it just sits loading on the white HTC screen and then reboots itself after a while.
Any thoughts? I tried holding down the volume rocker and the power key to get to the HBOOT screen so I could install a backup etc. However, there must be a recent radio on my SD card which is auto asking to install. Any way to get the HBOOT screen so I can actually use it w/ the PG05IMG.zip on the SD card?
I don't have any external drive to read the SD card etc. to delete that zip.
Thanks

Do you have an old phone you can put the sd card into and delete it via your computer?

i don't :/
I also tried removing the SD card and booting to the HBOOT menu. This allows the menu to come up and use it. However, I cannot pull the battery (even with the phone plugged in) to put the SD card back in... I saw this done on a youtube video, but it doesn't work... My phone powers off if I pull the battery.
Still stuck...

Best thing I can recommend is to borrow a phone with an sd card and use it to access your card. You won't even need a computer. If its android, just download any file manager from the app store. Find the PG05IMG file and rename it or delete it.
Presto. You're fixed. Now just download another Rom or reload another Rom on your sd card.

I'm back. I was able to trick with the SD card and battery to get into the HBOOT menu without it auto loading the radio.
To share, since it could help others in the future... What I basically did, and took a lot of trial and error, was seating the SD card about 85% into the slot, so not enough for it to be recognized. Then, hold the battery on a slightly angle, enough for the contacts to touch, but not enough to push the SD card all the way into the slot. That's the tricky part. Once you get to the HBOOT menu, very carefully navigate to restore, after the reboot, push the battery all the way in and it will also push the SD card fully into the slot.
Now, you can recover backup.
Took a lot of tries as I kept losing the battery connection and it powered off or the SD card made contact and loaded the radio. It worked though as I did not have access to another phone.
Hope this may help someone else in the future.

I had this problem too, and i freaked out! Dont worry, its all good! What happened is that you flashed it incorrectly. I dont know what i did wrong, i dont know what you did wrong, it doesnt matter. Anyway, you wiped your phone and now its trying to reboot but there isnt an Operating system on the phone, so it wont get passed the splash screen. Simply boot back into recovery and flash the gingeritis rom again. Reboot, and you should be all set! Good luck!

[Q] Rezound RezROM install issues

So I used Hasoon2000 to unlock the boot loader, flashed Amon-RA, then flashed the ROM and the kernel. The phone is stuck at the white HTC screen, and if I try to HBoot with the SD card in the phone, it tells me "Main version is older!", then it reboots.
So I'm stuck. Any ideas?
x01660
Never used the Hasoon tool before. Which RezROM are you trying to install?
Regarding the main version is older issue, the problem is that you have a PH98IMG.zip file sitting in the base folder of your SD card. Every time the phone boots up into hboot, it will try to flash that file. Assuming you want to flash that file (probably the kernel for your ROM, but it may already be flashed), you need to follow the steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23169557&postcount=4
However, having it on your SD card and a non-working ROM makes booting into recovery a little tricky. You can either: use the microSD card in an SD adapter, mount it on your PC, and delete or move the PH98IMG.zip file; or a slightly more tricky approach is to half pull out the SD card before your phone boots. Lift up the battery slightly at an angle so it's still making contact, and pull out the SD card. Then use power+volume down to boot into hboot. Once booted, push the SD card in, and you can put the battery back in. It takes some maneuvering but can be done by one person (I've done it a few times).
I will do this and report back. Thank you.

Used setmainversionLOW.zip. Worked like a charm. I'm up and running. Thanks!!

[Q] Rezound stuck in hboot, can't get to recovery

I have an s-off ReZound, tried to flash Vigor360 kernel prior to flashing the Vigor360 ROM. I screwed up, I guess, because I wiped system, data, cache (thinking I was going to then flash the ROM zip after flashing the kernel), then flashed the kernel zip. Now my hboot just constantly tries to run the update, and if I don't boot to the bootloader, the phone just stays at the HTC boot screen. I know I need to probably delete the files off the internal SD, but I can't get adb to recognize the device (i'm guessing since I have no rom to boot up into), so I don't know how to get into recovery to delete the zip file now.
How do I get out of this? Confused....
You can pull the card out and use a card reader on your pc to delete that PH98IMG and copy back the ROM if it's not still on there and put it back in the phone. Boot into bootloader and flash the ROM again. I think that will work.
Then after the ROM flashes just flash the kernel PH98IMG file without wiping.
That should do it.
If you don't have a card reader to use, there's a trick to sliding out the card just a little bit so the phone will boot, but I'm confusing myself trying to think of how it works since it allows you to bypass the PH98IMG file but then I don't see how you are supposed to read it to delete the file once booted. Might be able to find it by searching, I know it's been posted a few times.
Thanks for the reply

Thank you for trying to help me. Unfortunately, the zip is on the internal SD. I have removed the external SD card from this equation completely. If I had a way to read the internal SD, I could be in business, but the only way I know how to do that outside of the ROM is in recovery, which I don't know how to get into while in this state.
Wonder what would happen if you put a PH98ZIP of an RUU on the external and popped that in? I don't know which card it would read first but you might get lucky and if it reads the RUU you can run that and start fresh.
The global leak one at Android Police is a zip:

Flashed RUU from external SD, deleted the violating ph98zip, then reflashed my rom. It appears to function. Thanks again for the help!
