A simple question that I couldn't find here.
I used to use the old booloader on Gingerbread 2.3.6, in order to make the JIG work.
Now I use ICS 4.0.3 LPQ, and I want the JIG working...
The question is...
Can I use the same old bootloader from GB on a ICS rom?? Will it brick my mobile If I flash it?
I know about the app "triangle away" which resets the binary counter, but I wonder If some day I can't enter the download mode for any reason.
Thanks!

jig should get you to download mode no matter which bootloader you're using, but it will reset counter only on old bootloader

Stealing this thread a little bit..
Regarding the Binary Count, is there any way to check it?
I had triangle, then installed Resurrection 1.0, which removed the triangle.
Does this mean that the count is reset? Any way to check?
Thank you
Pls install triangle away and open it...it will show the count....i tried and it works like gem......
Or goto vol down power and home key combination there also it will shw the xount

Just try what Makrilli suggested and use CWM to flash the old bootloader, not the standard download mode. Other users reported it works (as bootloader is not FW related, so it seems), google is your friend.

guYs,
I don't have a SGS2 but a SGY but the jig business still kinda applies.
reason for some above statements is obviously, that on many fone pcbs you have those JIG_ON and JIG_ON_JTAG hardware signals. the jig, on some boards, is kinda hardwired-OR to the POWER_ON signal. on SGY, JIG_ON powers up the device which is a process you cannot possibly keep from happening by an updated firmware. also jig leads to FACTORY MODE whereas via 3-button-combo you get to ODIN MODE. would be interesting to know where this "FACTORY MODE" is located in firmware, exactly ...

How do I use CWM to flash the bootloader? It only lets install zip files. It won't let me install the md5 file. I ask because I flashed the old bootloader using Odin but it wont reset my counter so I was thinking about flashing it using CWM.

Hi guys,
I just received my USB jig I ordered from eBay, and for some reason the flash counter isn't being reset. The phone enters download mode, and states it has cleared that data but when I boot it back up and check the count is where it was.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?
Cheers

hmm maybe the USB jig isnt fully functional, I remember reading that if it isnt soldered with a certain ohm it might not work..but not sure tho best ask in the USB jig thread...
sounds like you got a bogus one or it died during transport. If you can try to pry it open and make sure everything soldered is still connected. Otherwise its probably just a dud.
Thanks for the help guys. I believe the person I bought it from is also active on these forums, so hopefully he'll replace it asap
Thanks again
Try to replace from where u got it....
i have issue with usb jig too, i had it for a few months and it was working flawless, but today when i tried to reset the binary counter it didn`t worked that well...
i switched my phone off and waited until the vibration, then plugged the usb jig and after a few secs the factory mode appeared but it was still showing the custom binary and the yellow triangle after reboot...
so do you think the jig broke down or samsung put some kind of a new protection in the recent roms. i`m running 2.3.5 CheckRom Revolution HD 3.1.1...
What kernel rev are you running? The more recent ones have a new bootloader that no longer works with the jig.
You probably have new bootloader from Samsung while updating to 2.3.5. Look for how to get old bootloader back on your device or how to get the jig to reset the counter with new bootloader and it will work.
I had the same problem, but this Patch solved it! It's because samsung disabled the reset counter function since android 2.3.4

I don't mean to bring up an old thread, but it seems more apt to continue the conversation than to start a new one.
What is the latest version ROM that has a boot img that is still "jig-able"?
I had CheckROM v4 (KK5 based), then tried the leaked ICS (LP2). I then restored back to my old ROM via CWM recovery (I made a backup before), and while everything is back, I have this yellow exclamation mark. The jig doesn't work anymore. I assume CWM does not restore the bootloader, just the system, data, and cache. I even noticed the modem was left at LP1 (I used to have KI4).
Thanks.

You need to use ODIN to flash a stock rom to restore the device completely to factory
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16781156&postcount=2
I used xwki8 from the link above via odin to be able to use the jig.
I then turned my phone off, used the jig to boot into download mode to flash cwm and miui. Doing it this way seems to have prevented me getting the "I'm not official and shall spam a giant annoying yellow triangle at you" symbol
Hope this helps

Not the answer I wanted to hear, but I guess I had no choice. I was hoping I could just flash the boot loader by itself, but I couldn't find it as a separate image.
So that's what I did - flashed stock, rooted, and started all over.
Thanks.
Me and my fiance both have Samsung gs2's, both rooted the same way using the same rom. I bought a USB jig to reserved the counter and it worked fine on my phone but when I tried to use it on hers it wouldn't clear the custom counter. And the top of the screen in download mode it says odin mode on my phone but on hers it says factory mode. Could that be the reason it's not letting me reset the counter? If so how do I get hers to say Odin mode?
Thanks Adam

Sorry to bump this thread, but I thought it better than creating a new one!
I've just bought a USB jig and encountered the same issue ('Factory Mode', etc). I figured that I may have to flash the old bootloader to get it to work, but I've got a couple of questions first...
1) Does it matter what bootloader I use? I'm currently running ICS 4.0.3 (the XXLPB leak).
2) What are the differences between flashing it via 'bootloader' and 'PDA'?
3) What are the odds of bricking my phone? I've read that bootloaders are what cause most issues.
4) Do I need to re-flash my current bootloader (wherever I'd find that) or will my phone run the same/differently with the old one?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help. Still a bit new to all this!

I want to reset my custom binary counter using a USB jig, but it turns out that the newer bootloaders used in 2.3.4 or something onwards renders the jig useless. I can flash an old bootloader that still works with the jig, but I'm afraid that after this my phone will no longer boot as I am using XXLPB android version 4.0.3.
Does using an old <2.3.4 bootloader on ICS work? I don't want to find out the hard way.
There is an app by ChainFire, TriangleAway in the dev thread which can be used to reset binary counter. Check that out.
Note : CF says it's bit risky to do so, but you can try if you are willing to.
Flash the old bootloader, jig it/reset the flash counter, flash the new bootloader. Done. I posted both the old & new bootloaders to a thread yesterday (search for it).

Just curious, I am up to the point where I bought a USB jig from ebay seller and found out that it does not work on my upgraded Samsung Galaxy S2 which I loaded DPXL7 ICS and rooted. I see that I have to flash an old Samsung boot loader for the jig to reset the counter and remove the yellow triangle. Can find the download for the old boot loader but cannot find where to download the new ICS boot loader to put it back to original ICS. So now I see there is a free software you mentioned TriangleAway which you said removes the yellow triangle. But does it reset the flash counter to 0 also? If not I want to find the "new" ICS boot loader file so I can restore back to all ICS original build after I flash the old boot loader and use the USB jig to reset things. I'm searching but finding it hard to locate the threads or websites that give a good working download link. Thanks for any helpers out there!

Hi, I have downloaded some firmwares to my Samsung galaxy s2. The last firmware I put on was Official I thought but in download mode where is says "Curent Binary" it says custom. How do I get that back to official samsung? Is there a way through kies, like with iPhone where itunes can reinstall the os?
Also does a firmware that is vodafone branded be put on a handset that is on the three network? Would it affect the signal?
Thanks
Get a jig from eBay. If you find the jig doesn't work, flash the 'old' bootloader from here. Yes you can flash Vodafone branded firmware on a phone that uses 3's network. No, it shouldn't affect the signal. These things are dependent on your modem, and most roms don't replace your existing modem.
I flashed using a firmware from this site. http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=-1#modelsa and it returned it to the Samsung Official. Everything is back to standard.

Is flashing the old bootloader safe on a custom ROM? Even if it's an AOKP ROM? Cheers.
Yep.
However, some roms may not boot with the old bootloader (In saying that, I'm running it with CM9, but I didn't muck around with stock versions of ICS beforehand which might have changed it to a BL which doesn't work with CM9). If in doubt, ask the developer of the custom rom you're using if it works OK with the old bootloader (I presume you want to get rid of the boot triangle ?).
Obviously you run a very small risk of bricking your phone every time you flash anything, and you only flash/mess with bootloaders when you have a specific reason for same.
Having to send your phone to Samsung/your carrier for warranty service is one of those reasons, and if you've gone back to stock & your jig won't work, flashing the old bootloader is a simple no mucking around way of getting it done.

I just got my phone back from repair and they upgraded it to the latest version of ICS with the ICS Bootloader. I've flashed Hydrogen-ICS and I've got the yellow triangle, obviously the USB jig won't sort it because of the bootloader. There's no disadvantage to having the triangle other than if I need to send it back under warranty is there? I think I might just leave it and sort it if the time comes.
Ahhhh OK. Gotcha
No, the triangle is only a 'cosmetic' thing. You could probably flash the old bootloader, get rid of the triangle, flash the new bootloader, and be on your merry way. But if it doesn't bother you & you've got Hydrogen running the way you want & everything is hunky dory otherwise, there's no need to do it

Though it took some work didnt reconize the device after a good 30mins of pluging and pulling and restarting. I also found some apps can stop kies working apparently, ones from market not on pc. And i had a custome 2.3.6. I just fancied having back to normal till i get bored again.

You can avoid the counter increase, simply flash your archives via CWM instead of doing it via Odin. It won't update the counter, so the triangle won't appear

---------- Post added at 10:58 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 AM ----------
tutorial kinda................ thats how i run
1: flashed cwm (attached) via odin
2: wiped everything, including system
3: flashed stock ICS via odin
4: rooted via cf-root
5: used triangle away to reset counter and triangle
6: install mobile odin
7: flashed the cwm kernel extracted from the same and flashed using mobile odin [zimage]
8: now i have cwm without counter and triangle.
9: flashed cm9 using cwm
now i can flash whatever rom via cwm, without counter issue.
you want to flash kernel use mobileodin again and you wont update counter.
hope this helps.
EDiT: odin is 99.9% for stock ROM's thus will not raise counter. only when you flash cwm for the first time with odin you get counter + triangle.
hope this helps.
Hello,
I was wondering, I'm using a custom rom, Hydra-h2o (aokp based), and I have a usb jib. Phone model GT-I9100.
Thinking of testing it out of curiosity and I see that when I insert it, it goes to download mode but it doesn't reset the counter nor does it remove the yellow triangle.
Is that expected? Can it be done? Or whenever I need to reset the counter/triangle I should first go back to a stock rom?
Thanks for your answers

Should I just use one of those? Right now my base band reads XXLPX using hydra kernel.

Depends what your goal is: if you want to go back to stock you can use one of those.
If you just want to reset the counter with the JIG the read bold text applies. I normally just flash the old boot loader, then plug the JIG to reset the counter and then reflash the new boot loader.

He meant the red text referring to the bootloader tarball.
Ok, I think you refer to this:
" All packages below this point have the old bootloader so you can safely reset the binary counter with a Jig.
If you've already flashed a full package from elsewhere or updated using KIES and cannot reset your binary counter using the Jig just flash this package in the PDA or Bootloader section of Odin to replace the bootloaders and then you can reset the counter: Download
Here is the new Gingerbread bootloader tarball if you want to flash it back after resetting your binary counter: Download
Here is the ICS bootloader tarball if you want to flash it back after resetting your binary counter: Download"
I'm supposed to download and flash through Odin (pda section), the first link bootloader. Then use the jig and then flash the bootloader from third link. Correct?
Sorry I make many questions. I'm pretty noobish still about this topics and I rather be sure I understand procedure.
I tried downloading but all links show an 403 server error. xD
Thanks again.

Correct?

Yes, correct.
Sorry I make many questions. I'm pretty noobish still about this topics and I rather be sure I understand procedure.

No problem since flashing the boot loader might be one of the most 'dangerous' things to do.
I tried downloading but all links show an 403 server error. xD

I'm sorry for that but you will have to search for them in other places then
I'll use the topic to ask if there's any way I could remove the yellow triangle without reseting the flash counter. Thanks in advance!
