[Q] Phone will not turn on. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I was using my phone this morning and it froze so I took the battery out and tried to reboot it. It is now stuck at the screen you get when your phone is off and it is charging...ya know the green battery with the dots under it. It will not budge from this screen at all! I have done everything I can think of and nothing will work...Anyone got an idea how to fix this.

Did you try to take the Battery out for a few Minutes? You could then press the Power Button for a few second swhen the battery is out. Do you have a CWM on your phone? Tried to "boot in it"?
Power button + Home Button + Sound - (or was is it Sound +?) button when its off. There you could wipe cache first, or do a full wipe if its necessary...

Ive tried to boot into clockworkmod. It wont take. I booted into download mood and tried a restart from there and nothing. I will leave the battery out for a min and see what happens.

Solved this your Problem?
What have you done when your phone was freezing? If you just were watching videos it should be fine, but if you was installing something or even take changes on the system

I was trying to take a video when it happened. could it be the rom. btw i took it to att and the lady plugged it into her charger and bingo. I am going to flash back to stock. I have been having sdome bugs lately. my phone will randomly make that noise that it makes when you plug it in. and than it has been freezing as well. Could it be the rom? is the buggy issues the battery? I mean it seems like no rom i flash is stable for me and there is severe battery drain too. Any ideas?

if you're having consistent trouble with each rom you try, its either your phone or some sort of user error on your part.
flash it to stock and see if the errors persist. if they do, then it would seem your phone is faulty. if they do not, maybe stick with stock for a while and do some more reading before continuing with flashing custom roms.

I flashed back to unnamed instead of stock and things seem good just a battery drain issue I have juice defender running and still lose battery like its my job. Could I need a new battery?

Just rooted, overclocked, now when i power off it simply turns on 2 sec after.
How come? Anyone know?
Reflash your kernel, see if it continues.

Just did with odin and tried to power off again, it turns on.
Any other ideas?
Pulled my battery to shut it off.
Started the phone, shut it off, and it stayed off. Weird!
Thanks for your help.
its not off, it's underclocked so low it can't even wake up the screen, higher your min clock speed to 600 and see if it still happens, of try removing setcpu or that other one that starts with a T.. whichever you use

I have the same problem, instead of switching off it just reboots, even if I power off from recovery.
What kernel are you using. I'm using Ninphetamine 2.0.5, with VillainROM 2.4.2, with Black Android Theme.
I'd rather not pull the battery, after seeing how flimsy the battery cover when I put it on first, I decided I'd try to avoid fiddling with it if at all possible

Well let me tell you about a little secret: if you hold the power button for 10 seconds the phone will shutdown instantly no matter what.
I have the same problem too, it's very frustrating...

Doesn't work: it turns off, stays off for 2 seconds en boots up again.
I got same problem. Never flashed, never rooted. Got original 2.3.3.
I think I#ll try to flash it to fix it.
got a similar problem. probably not related. after unplugging it from a full charge, the phone kept making the "USB connected" sound. when turned off, it would do one of two things: display the big battery charging indicator while flashing the overheat indicator or turn itself back on.
while powered on, the battery icon will change from charging to not charging. I checked the USB socket and doesn't seem to be malfunctioning and there isn't anything shorting out the contacts. so far now, the battery level is at 87 percent after 48 minutes not in use. and now it's not making the sound anymore. I suppose the battery is malfunctioning.

I got a mixed-up thing of the issues on this topic..
When I take off the power socket, the symbol that shows "charging" remains there, and also, it is completely impossible to turn off the phone..
Whenever I turn it off, hard, or standard mode, it turns on again after 2 seconds..
And even if I remove the battery, I put it on again, and then it's back on in 3 sec....
Uh, and when I plug the charger in, when the battery is completely discharged, I have to take it out and back in , several times, before anything appears on screen, and even when it does, there is a temperature warning sign , and a yellow one which usually appear...
I'm getting very frustrated since I just paid 5000 nok (920 USD) for this phone..
And while I really begun to like Android, I guess I'll have to switch back to iPhone with a 4S, or to some better android device, since yes, the gs2 is cool , but I can't stand such issues, since I do run business things, and the phone is of vital importance for me, and not just a console/browsing crap.
Has anyone got any solution on this issue?
It would be crap if I had to send it to service, since it would take a lot of time, and I would have then to buy another temporary phone in the meanwhile...
PLEASE, HELP!
I had this problem, i cleaned the USB port out but that didn't stop it, but i think it helped. I then drained the battery to nothing and it has now stoppped. It's a battery problem, as it didn't switch off like it does when it hits low battery it just died. The battery readings were also inacurrate and every now and then it would do a weird thing like flashing it was charging, but it wasn't. I tried software etc.. and clean wipe before i tried the hardware, so it wasn't the rom i was running. I think the battery is on it's way out, so I've bought a new one.

Did this actually help? I had all the symptoms everyone has been describing and sent it to Samsung for repair. Their response was that the phone was stuck trying to download a PRL update, but as soon as I got the phone back from them and charged my battery to 100%, removing the phone from the charger caused everything to start again. I'm not entirely sure it is the battery, but have no other ideas.
USB charging port is dead.
Buy a new one on ebay and replace it.

Hi all.
Had similar problems about one month after getting my s2. I have unlocked sim card, rooted it and flashed some kernel, shyah i think. And left it with stock rom (Android 4.0). As it was under warranty i reverted completely to stock and took it to the carrier. After one day got it back but they said it had no problem. The fact is that i could in fact turn it off again. After a few days it was back so i flashed a custom rom (resurrection remix at that time) and never had it again.
Now I'm with alliancerom and apolo kernel for a few months and never had it again.

After flashing Jokers CM9 ICS Rom problems

As the title states I flashed the latest CM9 ICS rom from Joker and It started off working fine after getting the radio to finally work but now it randomly turns off and i won't be able to turn it back on unless i do a battery pull and also the phone tends to overheat way too much. I didn't flash anything other then the Gapps and the rom itself.

It's overclocked by default. So that's probably heating it up. I recommend lowering it to 1ghz or lower. As for the radio... it's turning off? Or data? Just curious.

i'm not to sure how exactly to do that but i'll do some searching. and at first the radio just wasn't picking up a provider but then i flashed the 0.3.1 or w.e it was first and now that is working. the only issue now is that it will reboot randomly and thats the biggest problem for me. I thought it had something to do with the overheating?

If either of you get that error with no service all you have to do is flash a previous version such as 0.3.0. Reboot into the OS. Go back to the recovery and update to the latest. Do not wipe anything when updating! It's an easy fix and all will work afterwards. Flash them twice if necessary.

@Mr white I love this rom which is why I want it to stop rebooting randomly just do what @na7q said and it should work I'm just curious if it's the overclocking and over heating that's causing it to reboot?
Now it seems like it shuts down when I have wifi connected after some time. Any suggestions?

I am having the same issue. But strangely it only seems to happen when I am outside. The first time I noticed it was when I went fishing. My phone had about 80% charge, and when I picked it up maybe 30 mins later is was scorching hot. To the point that it burnt me. And it had shut off. I didn't have it in the sun or anything. It was in the shade inside a bag. I was not able to get it to turn on even with a battery pull even after it had cooled down. The battery completely drained in a matter of minutes. I couldn't even get it to charge in the truck on the car charger, either. It got too hot on the charger to the point it wouldn't even get a charge. This has happened about 3 or 4 times since. It will go from a full battery, get super hot, and completely drain within minutes. This never used to happen in the house, it was only an issue outside. until today. Went fishing, phone had full charge. It managed to hold the battery for a couple hours, unlike the other times, but eventually got hot and died. Then when I got home, plugged it into the charger and went to sleep, woke up a couple hours later and it was burning hot, and had no charge. Other things on it are acting weird now, as well. The screen keeps turning on and off every few seconds by itself. I don't know what the issue is, but I might have to switch back to stock if I can't find a solution. Because eventually this is going to fry my phone. And I don't want that to happen. It is also a huge inconvenience for your phone battery to drain in a matter of minutes and become a useless paperweight when you are in the middle of nowhere and need a form of communication in an emergency.

[Q] Charging issue

My problem is kind of strange.. when I turn off the phone, it thinks it's being charged (no cable plugged in).. and i'm unable to boot the OS as per usual. The only way for me to do it is to load CWM and choose the reboot option, which does work but only with 1 battery (a spare hyperion one). The stock battery and my other hyperion aftermarket battery does not work. Instead, it takes me to the stock recovery system.
I tried remedying this problem by doing wiping battery stats, but it doesn't help any. I also decided to make the jump from unnamed ROM (gingerbread) to an ICS rom (AOKP)
On top of that, the phone no longer makes a beeping sound when i plug the cable in, but it does charge the battery.
Another thing: the boot screen (when turning phone on) shows "samsung i9100" when i'm pretty sure my phone is an i777.. i might have done something to this phone when i got it about 10 months ago, but i don't remember. All i remember was rooting the phone and flashing it to unnamed ROM.
It seems like this might be a hardware issue, but i'm no expert.

I would try wiping cache and dalvik cache in cwm. Also, fix permissions in cwm. If that does nothing, I would try a different kernel. However, this may be an internal issue of the phone.

Well you fixed your charging issue by itself It says that because the flash counter has been tripped. Just use any triangle away app from the play store.

i just flashed to AOKP ics rom yesterday from unnamed ROM, so i doubt it's a a kernel issue. just tried wiping cache, dalvik cache, and fixed permissions. still the same issue. im afraid of shutting the phone off or changing the batteries now, which is a pain since the new ICS rom burns battery power like crazy.

the flash counter isn't a big issue for me; thought i had circumvented it when i flashed the ROM 10 months ago, but i guess not. the phone still thinks it's being charged when it's turned off though. that's my main problem.

Try to go to stock and see if the problem persists. If it does obviously a hardware issue
ultimately, if i really want to confirm, i'd probably have to do that. but i've already installed 2 different ROMs and the issue is still persistent, so i'm just going to assume it's a hardware issue. it also seems now that the phone no longer turns off. if i choose to turn it off, it'll just reboot the phone. this phone will have to last me another 9-10 months, i just hope it doesn't die out on me.
but yeah, i tried ICS for about a day and didn't like it. bad battery life, seems slower, and less user intuitive UI.. so i'm going back to gingerbread.

you know samsung has factory warranty for that kind of stuff.
i got my phone refurbished, about 9 or so months ago.. it only came with 3 months for the warranty. i guess getting a returned phone ended up biting me in the ass.
now the phone is overheating when im charging it.. looks like it's going to crap out on me soon.
Download the stock 2.3.4 firmware from the download repository. Do a full wipe including system data cache and dalvik. Boot into download mode hook up Odin and flash the stock firmware. If its a hardware issue your problems will persist in which case u could sell it on eBay for parts. If its a software issue that will fix it.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
that's what i'll probably have to do tomorrow. if i remember correct, rooting the phone on 2.3.4 wasn't that straight forward, so i'd have to read up on how to do that again. but im just gonna leave it as is right now.
the phone acts really weird. when i took out the battery and replaced it with another one, it would keep doing the same thing. so then i plugged the phone into the USB charger and tried turning it on - that worked.
if it's a hardware thing, it's got to be something to do with the battery sensor. the phone is simple to remove, so i wonder if i can replace it myself.
i believe my phone is now semi-FUBAR.. it still runs, but seems like the battery sensor issue is a hardware one. i just tried doing a stock flash/odin thingy, and it still has the same issues... also, the phone is now permanently showing as MTP connected. i am also seeing decreased battery life.. only lasts about 1/2 a day now.
i guess i learned my lesson.. don't switch out the batteries too often, or your phone will die.

My vibrant turns off by itself and it's unusable

Secuence of events that happened BEFORE the problem started:
1-Had a working rom of CM7.2
2-Battery was going out too quickly (7 hours or so) therefore I tried wiping battery data
3-Charged the phone
4- Unplugged it, took a picture
Problem:
One hour later I realised it was turned off...
I turned it on again, it turned off soon afterwards
for a moment it had a problem turning on (it wouldn't go past the cm logo)
afterwards it was even worse; it turned off before even passing the first logo, I couldn't even get it to recovery mode.
Solution Attempt no.1
Tried to get it to stock rom with Odin.
I was able too... but the problem persisted in the new Rom.
Solution Attempt no.2
Tried to get another rom
My situation NOW
I'm back on stock Rom. If I leave my phone alone for like an hour or so it works for 20/30 secs before turning off... After that the problem gets worse till I cannot boot.
Any ideas guys?
How old is the battery? There are apps on playstore to check your battery, thats where I would start. It doesn't sound like a Rom problem, sounds like hardware.ie battery first. Gluck.

I don't know if it's a hardware problem since it happen really suddenly...and just the day after I resetted the battery stats ..... Maybe it is a hardware issue but I want to be sure I tested everything first
Hey, maybe you moved on but I was having the same issue on every ROM.. stock or not. being the detective I am I investigated and inspected.
One of my battery connecting pins is loose even though it's pressed tightly in the case any moderate amount of force or impact loosens it from the contacts.
My temp solution for you would be to add something to the back cover to apply enough pressure to keep the battery still or resolder the copper connectors. The first being easier.
Hit thanks if that helps.
Invest in a new battery. Simple solution.

[Q] DNA boots to recovery, battery dies, reboots to recovery

So I'll start off by saying I'm on Cyanogenmod 11.0 12/15 nightly, running CWM 6.0.4.5, and crpalmers kernel for nightlies 5.2.11.
While trying to take a picture today my phone turned off (had 50% battery left) and would not turn back on. When I plugged it into power it took a little while to power on, as if the battery was dead. When it finally turned on it booted to recovery, stayed on for a bit then turned off before I could do anything. When it restarted again I tried to re-install the rom but it died again before it could start. So i figured i would just keep it turned off and let it charge. As soon as I plug it in, it boots. Plug it into the computer, same thing. Any ideas???
Update: So I found a more powerful charger, 1150mV over a 1000mV, and that was enough to keep the screen on and charge the battery enough to let the phone boot normally. But now the phone only stays on for about 20 min before it reboots. Still not sure whats going on but atleast it boots.
Sounds like a bad battery to me.

Once I let the battery charge fully I just returned back to stock. The how-to is in the forum some where, I can find it later but I'm on my way out the door. As of right now I'm s-off but completely stock and seems to be working fine. Maybe try a different kernel first and see if that helps.
