why cant i play wma sound files on my phone? i'm trying to play .wma audiobooks. i dont get it! how can i enable my phone to play wma files? can i install a codex for this?
It's a proprietary format owned by Microsoft so it probably can't be distributed with the Android source. You could try a 3rd party player.

but i played it successfully when i had virtuous unity installed. i now have absolution 3.7 and to me, i should be able to play it with no probs. why does one rom let me play it when another rom doesnt? this makes no sense. can i install a codex that'll allow me to play .wma?
Google dropped support of WMA format as of Android 3.0, that's why you can no longer play them. Just use a proprietary player as another poster suggested.

Has anyone gotten the new versions of XVID encoded movies to work on their Athena? I have tried 13 different packages of codecs and have only been able to get audio at best. I purchased all of the different video players that I could find, but haven't had any luck getting them to show video from the latest XVID standards. I can watch them just fine on my PC but can't seem to get the right configuration to work on my Athena. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
coreplayer?
Coreplayer says it will work, but...
Thanks, I tried coreplayer, even paid for it and everything, wish that I could have tried prior to purchase just to test the fact that the codec's didn't work on the content that I have downloaded from the LOL group. I have even tried different codec packs to try and get everything to work properly.
Any other thoughts?

Hi
Try Pocket divx encoder (which is free) to convert the file for the device then play on Wm player or TCPMP OR core player. It works. If not your downloaded file is not a Xvid file.
Goodluck
Agreed, but I am really trying to get away from special conversions just for WM...
Thanks, I can play the files with the XVID codec on the PC, the files synced onto the device and then I set out on a journey to find the right codec or get the PC codecs to work in the mobile device. Isn't their anyway to avoid re-encoding the files? Seems like if I pull them off a torrent and they play on my PC, that I should be able to simply push them over to the PK 3.0 load and have them work, as well. Right?

Odds are, LOL might be using QPEL or some other encoding feature that CorePlayer/TCPMP don't support. Try another Xvid file, if it plays, then it's LOL's encoding choice.
if you'vd paid for coreplayer have you tried submitting a request to them?
I've searched and it seems that froyo doesn't support wma and only patchy reports that any non-stock music player will play them either. Now I know wma is a fairly crap format but I've got gigs of music on my server in that format and I've neither the time nor inclination to convert it. Any advice? I want a free and legal solution ideally
OK so PowerAmp seems to support it, but why no native support I wonder. Don't really want to spend any money fixing this as a fully functioning music player is one of the reasons I got a SE phone in the first place Any free suggestion appreciated. Pretty sure the SE media player supported them but obviously I've nuked that piece of crap from orbit by installing 2.2. Well it was the only way to be sure...
I'm using poweramp, plays everything I throw at it and has a sweet equaliser. Oh you said free, sorry!

PowerAmp does look good but it seems very odd that other players don't support it. Was a longtime winamp user but no longer it seems...

There's nothing odd about that. No other player has ported ffmpeg to Android, maybe VLC when it's ready.

So just use poweramp, it works with wma

There are tools out there for free to convert wma but looks like $5 for poweramp may be easier. I'm sure wma was supported in se2.1 with several free players tho. Minor for most but if you've got gigs of wma to play could be a consideration
Confirmed. Winamp or mediascape play wma fine on se2.1. Possibly worth noting as a restriction for custom 2.2+ ROMs?
Hi, I have recently unlocked the bootloader of my ST15i according to the official method on Sony Mobile Developer World.
I knew it was going to delete DRM & TrackID, about which I didn't care, because I haven't bought any music in iTunes, I have only ripped some CD's in a m4a (aac) 128 kpbs format, which resulted in non-DRM'ed m4a's that I could play on any device supporting m4a (aac).
But, I quickly noticed I just couldn't play m4a (aac) files anymore. I tried several music players, and PowerAmp seems the only one that can play these files now, problem: it's paid.
So, the question is, is there any way to get these files supported again in the stock music player? Because it seems the bootloader-unlock also removed non-drm m4a support... Thanks in advance.
PS:
I'm now running the original SE ROM (.62) + a prerooted kernel.
I don't know if this the correct subforum, because this could also be a feature idea/request for development... :S
There has to be a way to solve this ^^, if PowerAmp is capable to play m4a's..
[EDIT]
It seems WinAmp also does the job (hadn't tried this one), but suggestions on how to get support in the stock music player are still welcome! (because I like the stock 'simplicity' & memory usage more).
I am not sure if unlocking bootloader would affect the usage of the stock music player. The music files that you are trying to play are not even protected as per your explanation.
Have you tried other formats like mp3 or aac+?
Try reencoding your audio cds to the same aac format then try it again on the stock music player.
If it still does not work, then you are better off using another player.

Thanks for you answer, these aac's worked on the stock player before I unlocked the bootloader, mp3's worked and are still working fine. I don't have any aac+'s.
The aac's are indeed not protected, and thats what I think is weird, because there's absolutely no DRM on them if you just rip a CD...
What would reencoding the CD's to the same format help? It's the same format xP. I don't have the time now, but i'll try one CD later, until then I can use WinAmp without a problem.

If the CDs are official ones, they might be copy-protected anyway.
Do the music files, ripped from CD, work on your PC?

Nah, if you rip them the don't have any protection anymore. The ripped files perfectly work on VLC... so there's no need for an account permission or a familiar thing. Btw, I don't have iTunes installed anymore.
I love the fact that I can upload my music from my pc to my play account to stream my library to my s3. BUT i dont love the play music app, it works well. But its very basic.
Anyone know of an app that either adds features, or replaces it but can still access my play library?
thanks
Google play music app is horrible. There is something, I forget the name, that will download GP music to device so you can use a real player -- Neutron, Poweramp, etc.

I can't play most of my .flac files. You may check if you can play it. I've noticed that only Poweramp can do that because it uses its own audio decoder. Any ideas how to fix it? Isn't there any missing libraries? On MIUI everything works but i don't wanna use it.
