[Q] Modem firmwares. Any that would work. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am curious..
I bought a SGS2 i9100 (international)
the site i bought it from says
Wireless RadioGSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz
UMTS 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz
Now.. i have a HTC panache (mt4g) that is on my carrier... and it says
AWS 1700, 2100 MHz (Bands I et IV)
IS THERE A MODEM I CAN FLASH FOR MY SGS2 that would work on my HTC panache carrier?

OK. Let's try this again...
Finding a modem that works well with your carrier & it's network with the SGS2 can be a bit of trial & error. Basically if the modem you're currently using is giving you lousy coverage/data speeds, start flashing/testing modems until you find one that works for you. Here's a link to a bunch of CWM flashable I9100 modems you can try to get you started. Do a Google search with XDA appended to your search terms & you should be able to dig up heaps of posts that link to others you can download/try.

Well it seems like i do have a australia modem (BUKI1)
When i put my SIM card from my HTC phone.. The SGS2 automaticly goes into roaming and doesn't detect the non roaming carrier..
By the way I'm in canada.
IT ALSO SEES THE APN for my HTC phone carrier when i put the sim card.. but goes straight to roaming

It can only detect a carrier on auto if the CSC has the carriers settings .
OZ modem most likely OZ CSC as well . Just set network manually .
jje

JJE i tried that... it doesn't even list the carrier in the list...
goes straight to roaming..
I think it's the modem that not doing it since it's a autralian Modem...

No, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203385

So it is impossible.. Can anyone else confirm this?

Is your network T-Mobile USA? (I'm guessing yes since you've also got a MyTouch4G?)
The phone does not have the necessary radio hardware to receive 1700 mhz. Which is one of the bands necessary for AWS. So nothing better than Edge on T-Mobile USA.
No amount of modem flash is ever going to fix a hardware limitation.
Edit: Oh, I see from one of your posts above you're in Canada, so you're NOT on T-Mobile USA. BUT everything I said is still valid. If you're trying to get the phone to receive 1700 mhz, you won't have a lot of luck without some major phone surgery involving a hardware antenna engineer, as stated in the link provided to you by oinkylicious.

No 3G access on vodafone in India on my ATT SGS2

Hello All,
I am having issues connecting to the 3G network of Vodafone in India. My SGS2 is from AT&T and I was able to root it & unlock it and its works fine with the call and other stuff. I flashed the UnNamed v1.0.4 ROM and its been pretty stable.
But after activating my 3G service here, all I see is E with the 2 arrows. I researched online and saw that we need to change the CSC code. I looked up at the CSC code on my phone by dialing in *#272*<your IMEI># and its shows as ATT.
Can you please help me on how to change the CSC to INU (India Localisation) so that I can access the 3G network here.
Thanks

you probably just need to add your apn. Flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299705 its based on the international version so it might let you select your network.
First, make sure that Vodafone in India works in UMTS 850/1900/2100mhz bands. If they are using 900mhz band, this phone does not support it. As much as I know most European and Asian countries use either 900mhz or 2100mhz or both.
It could be frequency or any other issue but if you are looking to change your CSC then look up app "Samsung Galaxy S / S2 CSC" in the market and give it a try. Remember that your ROM has to support MultiCSC.
EDGE with data functioning is a clear sign of a band mismatch, not an APN issue.

India is 2100mhz while the at&t sgsii is 850/1900 so 3g won't work. The t-mobile sgsii would work though, t-mobile's 3g frequency is 1700/2100.

AT&T GS2 supports 850/1900/2100 3G bands. So, if the paticular carrier uses 900 for 3G, it won't work.
Or if it happens to use the 1700 MHz AWS band - but I don't know if any Indian carriers do.

1700 seems to be North America exclusive Rest of the world primarily use 900 and 2100 for 3G with Brazil and Austrialia also use 850 and 1900 in addition to 900 and 2100.

[Q] If the GSM/UMTS modems are the same...

... In the AT&T and International versions of the Atrix... why can we not enable HSPA/UMTS on 900MHz through flashing radios or other software means?
Edit: Phone is an unlocked AT&T version on O2 UK with O2 sim.
Because the 900MHz band that the Atrix uses is part of the quad-band GSM, which is 2G/EDGE, not UMTS. Those are two different standards.

But the international supports UMTS/WCDMA/3G/3.5/HSDPA/HSPA/HSPA+ on 900mhz going by all of the spec sheets I read.
UTMS is 3G. HSDPA is 3.5. A standard of WCDMA. HSPA is another WCDMA standard which again is a 3G Technology (3.7G?)... Either way they all come off the same 3G cell

I don't know about the other bands but you specifically mentioned the 900MHz band so that was what I was talking about.
More than likely the carriers have locked the radios and/or hardware. It's like other carrier's world phones will not work on AT&T/T-mobile, even though they technically can support those bands.

Maybe I should have made clear in the first post... woops.
Okay, the first two links do not show any proof they got it working on UMTS 900MHz band.
In this thread, the OP last updated his post (on Oct 8th) stating that he is stuck on EDGE:

Again, in this thread, the OP (in post #3) says that he never got it working and the last person to comment (post #7) only says they got it working on the 2100MHz band, not 900MHz:

There doesn't seem to be any logic to why other than software as the radios taken out of all firmwares work on both versions. The only logical answer is software (if I could SBF flash a UK firmware, not CWM that would help, but there was other differences with the mainboard right?), or its the same chip just slightly modified without that band included.
I was mooching around system folders trying to find anything that could give me a clue, but to no avail.
I think it has something to do with what module is used, which is a hardware component. I know the AT&T Atrix uses the Qualcomm MDM6200 but I have no idea what other versions use.
I might be wrong though.

Indeed, so logic would say that if we flash international radios for a different module (if they are different) would soft brick the phone or cause the phone to no get any kind of reception what so ever.
I do find the international radios and att radios (other than the stock and 1.87) make the H+ signal level not go over 1 bar.
I'm not sure about bricking the device but I know they usually have those radios locked down pretty good which is why most people need to buy unlock codes or get their carrier to unlock their phones for them. It's not very common that end users can crack them.

SIM Lock and Radio locks are two completely different things. SIM locks are easy to break with a £10 note and a guy with some device, a radio lock is more difficult we dunno if its hardware or software.
Has anyone got an international/uk/europe Atrix that they'd kindly tear to pieces to see if its the same cellular modem?

With the GT-I9100, you'll ONLY ever get Edge on T-Mobile USA. Doesn't matter what you flash. The phone simply doesn't have the hardware to receive 1700mhz UMTS, which is one of two necessary bands (the other being 2100mhz UMTS) for 3g/4g on T-Mobile USA's network.
The GT-I9100 will only ever get HSPA/HSPA+ on AT&T's network in the US. I'm sure of this - I have an I9100, and am on AT&T.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Nope. Not short of getting an AT&T account just for that phone, anyway.
...
(sorry, here comes some snark)
Unless you're comfortable cracking open the phone, ripping out the antenna, replacing it with one that will receive 1700/2100 mhz UMTS, decompiling the OS, tweaking it to recognize the new frequencies, and recompiling.

Just found this forum... have the exact same issue. I have the GT-I9100 Intl version from Australia and now in the USA for a couple of weeks using T Mobile.
The dude behind the counter asked if my phone was unlocked, which it is. I told him that it supports Quad Band UMTS 850, 900, 1800 and 2100mhz and he said I'd get full HSPA+ reception on the 2100mhz band...
Sure enough, it's only Edge. I THINK there might be a setting in the Device Config (on keypad * # * # 197328640 # * # *) and possibly change something to use the US 2100mhz or something like that...
I can live with using Edge, but just interesting whether it's just a config setting that needs to be changed in the handset itself to pickup a different connection type for US 2100mhz bands?

I9100 only gets Edge on T-mobile USA because it doesn't receive 1700 WCDMA. If you want 3g/"4g" you'll have to go to ATT or another carrier that uses the same frequencies...
T-mobile USA uses AWS for high speed mobile internet, which REQUIRES BOTH 1700 & 2100mhz WCDMA. One is used for uplink, the other for downlink. Only receiving one of them won't work, which is why you're only getting Edge.
Dude behind the counter is wrong and doesn't seem to know how AWS works.
EDIT: BTW, UMTS and WCDMA are somewhat interchangeable in this instance.

Settings to use for ATT Lumia 920 on T-Mobile?

What settings can I use to configure my phone to T-mobile? I have an ATT unlocked 920 and I only get E signal. At times it switches to 4G and it drops. AWS stands for Advanced Wireless Services (wikipedia). It uses 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, and only a few phones support these bands.
So there no way to enable 4g on a AT&T Lumia. I love this phone but if there no way to fix this then what the point on having a slow connection
I have it enabled after they gave me the unlock code. I haven't done anything special to enable it apart from the regular phone updates. I'm not in the USA.

AT&T L920 has AWS 3G disabled by default. You must flash an alternate ROM to enable it.

They are wrong. They do not want people flashing ROMs on their phone so of course they'll say something like that.
Flash a different ROM to enable AWS band.

I looked through the thread and I assume this method is still possible? If I enable the AWS band will I be able to get 3g and 4g on my phone? (Currently, I have E and 4G, but my house is at the end of the 4g signal...lol.)

Yes, you will have 100% access to ALL of T-Mobile's network.
BUT the European ROM does not call HSPA+ "4G", it says H+ in the status bar. The European networks never followed T-Mobile's bull**** of calling HSPA+ a 4G network.
Look at the RM-821 column in this chart to see what each connection type will be labeled with a European ROM.

If you WANT I believe you can flash the Rogers ROM after flashing the Euro Dev ROM if you want the T-Mobile connection labels. Rogers and AT&T L920 ROMs also get updates before the European ROMs, so that is another thing to consider.

I'm currently on European DEV ROM. How exactly do you folks confirm that AWS is indeed working? Can anyone please confirm that you were able to get Wind Home on unlocked ATT Lumia 920 that has been flashed to Rogers, European and then back to Rogers ROM?

If you are able to connect to an AWS network. I personally use AT&T so I can't test it out, just repeating what others have said. What I know is that people with Rogers pentaband RM-820s flashed the AT&T ROM and that disabled AWS. Flashing Rogers back didn't re-enable it. So it seems that some ROMs like AT&T reprogram the bands and some like Rogers don't. I don't know any of this for sure, though.

The most important question now is - which ROMs can reprogam these bands back. With TMo its hard to confirm you are actually getting AWS and not the 1900 MHz 3G. I'm waiting for someone to confirm that with a true AWS carrier (Wind, Mobilicity).

Yeah if you're in an area with 1900MHz 3G then it is impossible to tell I think. I do not believe the 920 has any good diagnostics app.
Reading through the forums though multiple people have stated that AT&T ROM disables AWS and that euro dev ROM enables AWS. One person stated that the euro dev ROM did not enable AWS and instead he flashed through a ton of different ROMs including some latin america ROMs before finally getting AWS enabled. It's all in the thread I linked to earlier from January.

Can I use a I9100 on a USA Tmobile services?

Can I unlock an i9100 to USA Tmobile services? Do I need to install a custom room to make it work with Tmobile?
I look everywhere and can't find the answer. I only see different countries rom but no USA rom.
If the i9100 is unlock, shouldn't I just put a sim card and it connects to Tmobile? I did that, it didn't ask for any unlock code and doesn't connect to Tmobile.

As far as i know it will not work for Tmobile's network because they uses a 1700 MHz band frequency for 3G. The i9100 doesn't support this band
You can try unlocking your device and try? but i think you'll only be able to just make phone calls and with the internet your gonna end up getting EDGE speeds which is really slow.
If you had the chance to trade your i9100 for the Tmobiles variant i'd do it or sell that one you got and get the TMobiles version?

Yes, you can use it on t-mobile. However, depending on the area you live in, you may not get a 3G signal. You may only get EDGE speeds. T-Mobile primarily uses the 1700 mhz band for its 3G signal. They are however beginning to refarm some old 1900 mhz bands that currently are used for 2G data/voice and are converting it to 3G HSPA data. Check airportal.de to see if your area will have T-Mobile 1900 mhz HSPA coverage. Hope this helps.

There's nothing to unlock in an international version. It's already unlocked.

I have similar question, I'm going to US in the next month, I have i9100 and I'm wondering what mobile network will be the best for internet to me? Is there some network with similar bands as in Europe?
