Android on a MP3 player - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK so i just bought a Creative Zen touch 2 without doing enough research (stupid me) but for the price it's cheap. Anyway it runs Android, but the latest update is 2.2, and apparently this device has some issue with freezing (which could be RAM issues, and if I remember correctly, froyo sucked at RAM management).
As this device isn't real popular there aren't any custom ROMs that I can find. Is it really that hard for Creative to sort their issues and upgrade the systems.
I was wondering on the difficulty of making my own custom ROM, by porting from something else, another ASOP ROM maybe? Or is it just as hard as gingerbread to ICS.
Of this isn't possible I'll root the thing and just try to make the froyo ROM as light as possible.
Sorry if this is the wrong section All feedback is appreciated.

hi... and a question or 2, please help =]

hi guys i am new here so please be kind =D
ok, so i have a t-mobile g2 which i got in february and have been waiting ever since for 2.1. i am tired of waiting and am also thinking that 2.1 is probably a waste and would rather root.
so heres what i am looking for in a custom rom: longer battery life, overclocking, something that dosent lag alot (sense dosent but it has its annoying moments, especially on the lock screen), ease of use. you get the idea.
now i have not done alot of research into the custom rom area so any suggestions would be great.
and a second question: what is the best and safest way to go about rooting?
cheers guys

Here is a guide for rooting and installing custom ROMs.
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=375&start=0
You will need gold card method iirc
VillainROM 10.3 with JIT and ninpo's bfs kernel is really fast. And you mention lock screens. Vr has stock android one too with selectable wallpaper and working alarm
cool, thanks will take a look at these cheers.

In my experiences with it it's the fastest official 2.1 ROM along with VillainROM (Cronos Droid is also based on it but MoDaCo is more "raw" (more official) if you can say that) but Cronos Droid is even faster because of Feeyos modified libraries MoDaCo is a bit more laggy at times but MCR 4 isn't released yet (it's only a RC i think?) so thats what you would expect... I think when MCR 4 is released it's probably as fast as Cronos Droid but for now I think Cronos Droid would be the best for you unless you are totally in to that shiny Legend/Desire kind of look (which Cronos Droid doesen't have) then i would recommend MoDaCo or VillainROM
ahhh cool, im not tooo bothered about the look as long as it runs well and gives me a bit better battery life. just a thought out of 10 what are the chances of bricking my phone?

Umm. I used modaco ages ago (about 7 months or so), but I don't really know what it's like these days.
I am actually one of the devs of VillainROM, so not really in any place to give a totally unbiased answer.
Basically, it depends on what you are after. If you are looking for the fastest ROM possible, then something like the new SuperHero, which we will be releasing in the next day or so, might be up your street. It's a cross between stock 'eclair android' and some little bits of HTC sense. So it has the speed of vanilla, with the little niceities of Sense.
If you're after a totally Vanilla ROM, there are some of them around too, often based on CyanogenMod. Look for the terms AOSP and Vanilla if you want one of these. Be aware they might lack some of the features you are used to currently, since HTC does add a fair bit of stuff on top of Android.
For the pure HTC Sense ROM, there are a good number of them out too, although I have to confess I have completely lost track of which ones are out there. There's one from 42turkeys I think, and modaco and cronos etc. although I can't really recommend any of them as I haven't used them.
If you are after the 'perfected theme', there's a VillainROM theme from petsasj over on www.villainrom.co.uk that finishes off some of the aesthetics of the ROM, as there are some little imperfections in HTC's release. If you pop over to the IRC channel (link on the homepage), someone will be able to answer any detailed questions you have with ROM etc.

Right. Bricking... Well, so long as you don't do anything stupid with your phone, like pulling battery, you should be fine. If you want someone to guide you through the process or answer any questions you have, pop onto the IRC i mentioned.
So long as you are careful, and follow the instructions to the letter, you should be absolutely fine
VillainROM has a few little extra kernels etc. and a couple of fixes on the Over-the-air updater app that might help you get some better performance and battery life too
Just ask if you need help

Course Pop in the goldcard and then use the RUU (stock HTC ROM exe file) to restore back to the the factory condition
Fast is good for me too VR10.3 with ninpo's BFS kernel and 729MHz Overclock is good enough for me
im sure im gonna go with a villain rom as it has one of the clearest guides i have seen, plus i have the sdk and that stuff for the gold card thing. when is superhero out then seen as that is the fastest? gonna read it through a couple more times aswell so that i can really get to grips with what to do =]

The link isn't working for me either but I don't know anyone who has used the 'one click' methods.
I highly recomend BTDAG's guide linked in my sig (its the same guide as on Villain site) , you will get support if there is something you don't understand or if something unexpected happens. Read the whole thing through 1st, then start from the top.
arrgghh, just annoyed, cus it was working earlier. oh well. and yeah, will just have to follow the other one. i just liked the idea of a one click method. cheers =]
Quick mention, I believe I had the same phone as you T-Mobile_G2_Touch? The guide in my sig was created using the G2, if it helps
p.s. I advise using an XP machine, drivers for Windows 7 are a *****.

Thank you very much! Just got it running, so far no issues or force closes. I have been waiting on a 1.1 bl honeycomb. Thank you!
Wow! Great news, definitely gonna give this a try, had lots of issues the last time I used a 1.2 based bootloader,so I'm really glad to see this!
Thanks!

I'm actually surprised that it took this long.
We used the 1.2 bl initially because we had to as we ported directly from the Adam devs. But once there were Clem kernel ports, it wasn't technically a requirement anymore. I just never changed my port as my opinions on 1.2 are already well-stated and sticking with it made sense to me, at least. But that doesn't mean that a 1.1 based HC ROM was impossible.
However, if NI releases a HC port and it's using a .36 kernel to make everything work, this 1.1 ROM might have issues with porting that. But this is all speculation, at this point - I don't know if a NI port will even work on a GTAB yet, regardless of the bootloader used.
does this has the same bl 1.2 version issues or just the usb to pc?!
bl 1.2 version has these issues:
(copied from other forum)
- Camera isn't working (pulled out the app for now)
- Browser is working, but OpenGL is disabled for it to work. That means no Flash on the stock browser.
- (High-def) video playback does not work, yet.
any testers can confirm this? i'm a bit feeling lazy to try it today
confirmed but very smooth i love it its not reading my sdcard though how can i get it to read sd card?

One other thing, on a good note -- I'm definitely happy to see more modders our there for the GTablet. Options are always a good thing and I plan to pull back a bit, starting new month. So the more HC ports we have, the better!
Quick question... If I'm running Vegan 5.1.1, what do I need to do to install this ROM? Full wipe? Just flash it from CWM? Something else entirely?
Sorry, I'm still a bit of a noob at all of this, but I promise I'm trying to learn!
roebeet said:
I was really hesitant to post anything, as I really don't want you taking this the wrong way. I apologize if it came off as anything else but a concern for post-support, that was not my intent (and, in retrospect, a PM would have been better. My bad).
The branding, for me, is mostly about post-support. Remember, I'm a sysadmin by trade so when I get PM's on issues, I usually ask the usual questions like what mod, what version, how did you install it, etc. That's actually why I started branding "TNT Lite" as such back in November, as it was easier for me to know if a user was actually using my ROM or not. That's really my only concern, here. When two different mods are branded the same, it will get confusing. Especially if they are on two different development branches. It is fun, I agree - that's why I do this. But for users who soft-brick, it's sometimes a major panic attack and a lot of them are hesitant to use nvflash.

Robeet, I think you were spot on, the OP is not reading it correctly. I can just see the flood of posts/PM's asking you questions and users cross posting between 1.1/1.2 because of this and the difficulty of tracking all this. it's difficult enough keeping up with all these great roms and boot loader types, I could not imagine what it is like on your guys side.
OP he is not dissing you, he is just asking that you rename it so you can support issues and he does not have to keep getting cross questions, it's pretty much non-issue in my eyes.
OP, thanks for supporting the Gtab and the 1.1. people like all you devs that make android so much fun and android FTW over IOS.

Yes, full wipe and flash it. do a backup of course just incase you want to go back. back up your apps as well so you can restore them on the other side of HC.

[Q] ANy purely stock Android Gingerbread for HTC Legend?

Is there any ROM which gives me purely or nearly stock Android Gingerbread on HTC Legend? Or is there any mean by which we can uninstall those unwanted things from CyanogenMod 7 which I am currently running? Like the power control in notifications bar? I have already gotten rid of ADW Launcher and replaced it with Stock Android Gingerbread Launcher. Tips and help needed in this thing.

u are doing smth wrong
works like a charm here
No offense, but someone who posts in broken English doesn't qualify as a valid response. There is no 'wrong' about it. It's a 'port' and therefore will be problematic.
For now, it's like running Windows XP on a Pentium II. It will work, but it won't get the job done. Leave Gingerbread for Scorpion based devices that actually can run it smoothly due to a faster processor and more internal memory. 90MB for application memory isn't enough.

Except for the official Google ones every device is using a 'port'. The CM maintainers even have to port the latest code back to the older official devices (as was done with the N1 long before Google engineers pushed the changes to their public Gingerbread repositories).

I just checked: At the moment I've got about 150MB of user memory available. Keep in mind that my system is up and running for a few days now and that Android keeps processes in memory until it has to free some for new ones.
I dare to assert that my knowledge concerning hardware support, hardware requirements and Android ports is quite profound. I may not have been as deeply involved into merging the CyanogenMod codebase with Gingerbread as say Cyanogen back then, but I nevertheless know a lot of code well enough and I also created the CPU/arch target for the Legend locally to build and run my and the World's first Gingerbread port of Android on my Legend. Said target was later added and merged by Ricardo Cerqueira by the way.
I also dare to state that the vast majority of differences that could seriously influence performance is to be found between Éclair and Froyo and that those differences resulted in nearly doubled scores in benchmarks. Even if you don't "believe" in benchmarks (I certainly don't) a 100% plus should at least prove that the Legend if perfectly capable of running Froyo. Because the differences between Froyo and Gingerbread are so small and cover a vast majority of completely different areas (like getting rid of a lot of legacy code) Froyo and Gingerbread are quite close.
You might be using valid English – which is not worth mentioning for a native speaker anyway – but that makes your false pretences not a whit righter.
Amen! ali ba and CM7 on HTC Legend FTW! ;-)

What can I use the Lapdock for, now that I am on CMx?

The good old Smiley, to make the reading happier:
I am looking for suggestions.
What could I use my Lapdock for, now that I made the switch to CyanogenMod?
Is there a good solution for making the VNC'ed ARM Ubuntu (look for Ubuntu Installer in the Play Store) work better with the touchpad? Should I sell it? Is there a solution to make remote control apps such as TeamViewer or Splashtop integrate with the Lapdock's keyboard and touchpad? Is there any way to make the device switch to Tablet mode without rebooting? That would be rather interesting to see. By the way, the CM9 ROM I am currently running has got Landscape HDMI working flawlessly, so that should not be an issue...
PS: Please do not ignore this thread. Any suggestions are welcome! (Use your common sense though)

I've struggled with the same question on my photon.. If there's working hdmi rotation on your CM, you can still use it for typing out documents, etc. I also used the mirror mode to watch movies on a larger(than phone) screen in bed.

Currently, I use it for watching movies as well, and I am looking forward to pairing a Wii Remote and/or a DualShock® 3 to my Atrix™, so that I can play some games such as GTA III and Shadowgun (Max Payne *-*) on the big screen.
I was happy with Blur until the day I ran into that tempting CM9 thread. I did not know what smoothness and responsiveness really were. Blur was the smoothest I thought it could ever get... But I was wrong, and now I have to choose between fluidity and Webtop.
I actually went back to Blur some months ago, but unfortunately, prolonged use of ICS can cause dependence. Believe it or not, I was pretty happy with Blur. Webtop was working flawlessly, I even had BackTrack installed, but then came the relapse: I could no longer resist to ICS. I am now back to CM9, and with it comes my dilemma...
I am looking for a way to use the Atrix™ as a more desktop-ish platform when docked (especially to the Lapdock). I believe the ideal would be Ubuntu through a local VNC client, or a remote desktop app, I just wish they would play nicer with the keyboard and touchpad...
Basically, something like a key mapper (easy-to-use, I am still unable to figure out WiiMoteController's key mapping scheme) for Lapdock's hardware. We could make a keyboard-powered Ouya!
What still concerns me though, is that games would not be optimized for it e.g. Minecraft PE, games where the camera angle for example, is controlled by dragging the screen, so it would have to be a really powerful, but easy-to-use key mapper, and since you can't have everything in life, I'm afraid I'm asking for much...

When the official Ubuntu for Android was announced, even though an Atrix 2 was used for the hands-on part, on the project's official hotsite... It was clearly an Atrix™ 4G standing there on the dock. The differences between our device's design and the Atrix 2's or the Defy's (Defy+'s) are not that obvious, but they are, indeed, noticeable.
You do know what that means, don't you? It means it is almost certain that our device will be on the first batch of officially supported devices!
I don't if the Atrix™ is still there, but if it's not, I can try to find the screenshot I took if you'd like.
I am so proud!

If yours is really stock, I suggest you get BackTrack from the BackTop project, I don't it's got aircrack built-in, and I was unable to install it, so unless you're an experienced hacker, don't get too excited with BackTrack's features, but my point is: It is amazingly faster than Webtop, it seems lighter, I used to be able to run more than 3 different apps simultaneously...
If yours is really running UbunTop I'm afraid I cannot assist you, since webtop2sd never worked for me and BackTop and WebtopMOD were the only I could ever manage to get working on my device...

What I understand from your reply is that the Paranoid Android ROM could put my Lapdock back to use. But what is the Paranoid Android ROM? What makes it different from other ROMs? How could it (at least partially) solve my problem?
Please be more specific.

I can answer this. What he meant is that you should use Paranoid. Paranoid is a rom thats an hybrid of a phone an a tablet, in short words, you can activate tablet mode for some apps, while some other apps still run in phone-mode, for the ease of use.
What I actually meant was to give a name and a designation, which I did.
Google paranoid android rom and you get the website, the website has a much better explanation then I could or should have to provide.
But yes in short it can give you a tablet UI on lapdock.

I did before you guys answered and after I posted my reply, and was about to post an apology to you, my friend (Random Canadian).
Sometimes my brain takes just way too long to figure some things out...
I am sorry.
Anyway, thank you very much! This might just solve it all!

ICS/JB for HTC flyer

Hello, first post
Now I have an HTC flyer and that means I am stuck with HC firmware or perhaps maybe GB.
There are a lot of fully functional customized HC ROMS out there, however when it comes to ICS or JB
most of them are buggy and never fully functional.
I am not a developer so I don't think that I have the right to criticize, however from what I see
many developer start an ICS or JB Flyer ROM and than just leave it.
It would be great if you people create some sort of a joint effort and make one stable and functional rom for the flyer.
Some would say just leave the flyer and buy yourself a Nexus or whatever but the thing is there are countries in this world where we can;t afford to just give up on a device and spend money on another one.
So what I would like to have is either an ICS or JB ROM where everything would be functional, however I could live without:
(and these are features that are already not working on the present ICS/JB roms)
-bluetooth
-front camera
-youtube HD (but only HD if regular youtube is missing is not OK)
-videorecorder (however this would be disappointing)
But It wold be awesome if Phone is implemented and Pen (Quill is acceptable also)
So far best ICS ROMS are Yetki (where only problem I had was that wi-fi was not functioning even with manual flashing of the boot.img)
Also another new ROM is this one NexusFlyer in this ROM everything works (except for the above features) but I am not sure if there's a Phone function and the screen rotating is buggy.
So what are you willing to donate towards the developers' efforts? The "you people" in question have lives and families and jobs that require their attention on a daily basis. These ROMs are hobbies for them.
Their works are just voluntaty works.
They don't have any obligation to make roms for us.
They've already done and are doing many things for us, more than HTC
I understand it's a voluntary work and a hobby for most of them, but since they are already doing it, how abot making something that truly benefits people.
HTC has done a horrible job when it comes to the flyer and now we're either stuck woth HC albeit slightly modified, or waiting for the developer community to make something usefull.

I actually wouldn't mind learning how to create a JB or ICS, stable, ROM for the View and Flyer, since there really isn't any. At least for myself.
Where would one start reading?
lets hear from them

Honestly I don;t remember but I think that my phone worked OK, although I didn;t really tested all that well, because
WI-FI wasn' working on my tablet.
There will be an update to the Yetki tommorow (friday) or the next day. From what I saw on the thread
mic/sound issues will be addressed in the update.

Just stop right there. If the devs want to stop developing a ROM, that's their choice. You think what they have done has not truly benefited the people?
It has benefited people no doubt aboit it. Just not in this case, when it comes to the flyer they did better than HTC but I don't see any benefit in using any ICS based Flyer rom, rather than a HC custom rom.
It's complicated simce the Flyer has the scribe technology built in, notes, the e-book reader where you can scribble just like on real paper, front camera, back camera, I understand that it's complicated and maybe it takes time maybe it can not be done.
I don't understand what's with all this negative interpretation of my post, it should be an incentive that we are here we use this device and we would like to see it better.
Also I am not asking the developers to waste time on something useless, I don't need yet another partialy functional ROM, just stop right there say 'we can't do it,it's impossible' and move on to something that will perhaps benefit someone else, some other device. They are developers, it's what they do.

thx for u'r answer, that different with my tablet, Wi-fi and tethering working fine.
yups.. I be waiting for the update, hope today he update this ROM.
Hey, we are not their employer or their customer.
Whether they stop the development, move to other device or etc., it is just their choice.
If they think something is important, they try to do their best to make it work.(Actually, they do now.)
You don't see any benefit on their ICS rom? Just go back HC or give some useful feedback to them.
using :
HTC Flyer ICS yetki
HTC Desire MIUI ICS
It looks like Yetki is getting an update reały soon as in it only needs to be uploaded and shared, can't wait to test it! I loved it even the first time except wi-fi wasn't working, hoping theu will fix it in the update

IF you really want to develop ICS /JB fully functional ROMs for the HTC Flyer , start by learning how to build the kernel. What we are missing right now is a JB kernel for the Flyer, once that is done, its possible to begin CM10 and other variants of JB. However, be aware that building the kernel and the libs (drivers) for HTC devices can be difficult because not everything is open source.
We can't all be developers, I don't think learning how to build ROMs is as easy as the last few comments made it look. I am assuming some programmers would have a hard time doing so if they haven't had any experience into it let alone ppl that don't code. :/

for active wi-fi connection try to rollback to HC ROM (I try use leedroid and fastboot flash boot boot.img event I'm not use s-off from htcdev) after running fine, back to recovery full wipe, and upgrade to Yetki ROM without fastboot *.img file again. test running and wi-fi can active again. for tethering just install easytether.
CMIIW
Thanks I will try that.
Does it have to be a HC ROM because right now I am on Dexter's JB port and If I don't have to I'd skip a flash
