There are some seriously awesome benefits to rooting your phone. For example, i have adblocker for no adds, i can backup my apps and their data, and un install pre installed carrier apps with titanium backup, a new recovery will allow you to do a nandroid backup (with backs up EVERYTHING, so if you screw up, you can restore from it. Also you can get new ROMS, for example, i have a gio witch used to run gingerbread, but thanks to some awesome developers, i have ICS. You can also get kernels to overclock, undervolt and all that good stuff. But of course you have the risk of bricking it plus you lose warranty. But if you are careful and follow steps, you will be good.
And thats just the tip of the iceberg

Ability to do whatever you want on the phone you own
Don't like something, flash a mod or rom, or just tweak some system file. Basically getting full control over your phone.

Some popular examples are: put adblock to get rid of ads on your phone, titanium backup for extensive backup options, get mods to improve your camera quality, audio or battery life, get custom firmware that can include all of those and change the touchwiz interface with something prettier ot more useful.

when your phone is rooted, then you have super power ability to copy your downloaded aplication to system, so when you do factory reset, the application will remain in the phone LOL
Btw don't forget you lose warranty once rooted.
Being able to use an alternative rom - I9300 in many cases that have removed some of the more annoying bloatware that manufacturers put on the phone.... In the case of the gs3 the Omega 4.1 Rom allows you to install without some of the additional software that Samsung loads on..... Much of this software is a little unnecessary and can cause battery drain.... Great examples of rooted software:
1. Titanium backup
2. Sms backup
3. Modified Roms (slimrom, omega are ones I'm using now)
4. Cpu spy (think this needs root)
5. Better battery stats
6. CWM comes with many rooted kernels and let's you backup your whole phone / install new Roms, firmwares and apps...
It's a bit daunting but can be good fun.... Just make sure you don't get hooked on flashing new Roms (describes many people here)...

Rule is dont root unless you need to and can remove root .
Root does nothing to the phone itself and of course voids warranty and has a custom rom counter raised .

Urooting the phone is no harder than rooting it so unless you brick your phone or a defect prevents you from being able to unroot, your warranty is good.

Android has no way for a full backup so I have to Root mainly for Titanium Backup because I've lost too much stuff before turning to Rooting.
Hello Community!
So I had my Desire for quite long time, december 2010, and I rooted it and installed CM on it. When the CM team announced the CM9 devices I was heartbroken: no update for my sweet desire So a week ago I bought my S3!!! I LOVE IT! I just miss the old CM Yes I like touchwiz and stuff, but CM and rooting is just so much more powerful for a device like that(and desire was horrible with stock lol).
So my actual question is:
Am I still going to use clockworkmod?
Can I brick my phone?
Can I unroot my s3 if I root it?
If I brick the phone, is there any way to unbrick it?
tips and hints?
from nervous me
In order (to the best of my current knowledge)
Yes you will still be using CWM unless you flash EXT4
I believe you can like always but if you read everything twice and follow it to the line you should be safe
As far as I'm aware there is no un-root method yet but there will be
Again I don't think there is un-brick method yet but there will be, but the chances of bricking are so low like I said before if you pay attention you should be fine
Hope this helps.
Rooted my phone few days after i got the phone on may 25th. Been installing and testing Omega Roms for more than 2 weeks. Tested few different kernels and now o/c'd the device to 1800mhz. So far so good.
Have done nand backup (almost everyday one or two backups)
Backup on PC using Kies
EFS backup using

Thx for the super fast and helpful replys!
What about warrenty and stuff like that?
I heard about something called TriangleAway, it removes the flash counter to 0. But if the phone is rooted, how can the triangleaway help?
If the phone needs to be repaired, what about that?
Thx again
When you un-root the device you can use triangle away to remove the flash counter so the phone will look like its never been touched it's pretty awesome

Correction: You can't unroot the phone and use triangle away but once you use triangle away use MOBILE ODIN (this doesn't add to counter) to flash stock rom then the phone gets unrooted and everything gets back to factory default.
My new galaxy S2 I9100 was preloaded with ICs 4.0.3. However many of the games and stuff are not compatible and crash in ICS..So i would like to downgrade to gingerbread 2.3.6..
I found a site called sammobile..found the firmware for my country for 2.3.6..got the software Odin as well and read the steps for downgrading..
Now i wanna know few things before i proceed with the downgrade..
1. What are the risks involved?
2. How safe is the process? Usually done easily or is complicated and can lead to something disastrous?
3. If i am not satisfied with the downgrade or something went wrong.. is there a way i can restore my phone to the original unboxed condition(as it came out of the box with ICS 4.0.3 ) using some software or setting within the phone?
4. Lastly, i have many saved games and some important stuff..with downgrading it will go away(as i have read).. so how can i preserve them and make sure i dont have to start new game for all the games that i have played?
A huge thanks for replying to the answers above
1) minimal if you avoid repartitioning.
2) Odin is samsungs own engineering tool, it is safe if you are sensible. It involves about 4 mouse clicks to start a flash.
3) the sgs2 is very hard to break, if something goes wrong, use Odin again.
4) some (most) firmwares are non-wipe, but I imagine only going upwards, I.e GB to ICS. Either wait for someone more knowledgeable than me to answer, or assume it will wipe your phone.
EDIT: misread the question. Backup contacts etc. to Google, backup app with titanium backup (only if you're rooted)

u can save ur games and game data using titanium backup
Hi.
First of all, thank you for sharing SO MUCH information on this forum!
Now,
I got my Note last night and I rooted the it using dr.ketan's instructions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1329360) with the method #1b... I only rooted it for using orbot and don't feel the need for a custom ROM at the moment. Thus I didn't see the need for following through anymore steps (2 onward). I did make a back EFS and backed up my apps and system settings using titanium after I rooted.
My question is, if I want to unroot, do I simply repeat the rooting process only with the following two files:
UnRoot :
Busybox uninstaller - Flash in recovery
Complete unroot (busybox+Superuser) - Flash in recovery

or must I find a stock ROM as described here and flash that over my already stock setup. Since I have no interest in custome ROMs/kernels should I worry about anything like bricking or corrupting my phone?

Since your already on a completely stock ROM setup just select the completely unroot option once it completes reboot the phone and you should be all set. If your returning your phone to the manufacturer or bringing it in for service then you would want to reflash the stock ROM just to be extra sure they could never tell you were rooted

Cannot seem to find the answer for this specific device. Will have the ATT USA version of the HOX+ and want to know:
What is the Best Back Up App to get before rooting or anything like that, something that can be found in the Play store? Obviously would want it to backup the basics like calender, contacts, email accounts, etc. Also though, need a backup app that will backup installed App Data like say my game progress for Dead Trigger. I'm reading that once you root your device all App Data is erased to scratch, would hate to invest hours into an app only to have to start all over once Rooted when it does become available for ATT USA version.
Then once i am Rooted, what is the best Rooted Backup App to install that will backup everything above and anything else i would need before unlocking Bootloader and flashing roms?
Seems there's unroot backups and rooted backups but hundreds on the Play store and hate to find out the hard way which ones actually work and do what i need and which ones don't.
Appreciate any help on this and hope soon there will be stickies in this thread explaining such things to Androids Newbs like me so once this device is released tomorrow you guys don't get countless threads started like mine. Thank you
Is this right?
Upon doing more research online please correct me if i'm wrong here. From my understanding this is the process needed to flash a custom rom:
1. Root your device. Rooting actually does not delete any data or files but virtually "unlocks" (almost like jailbreaking Ios) your device for further access/tweaking abilities.
2. Now that i am rooted i can install titanium backup (is this the best rooted backup, see it mentioned by you guys a lot here) and this rooted backup app will backup virtually everything on my device including app data.
3. Once rooted, i can now install custom recovery (what exactly is this and what does it do?). I'm guessing custom recovery is needed for unlocking the bootloader incase there is a problem custom recovery will recover your device (hints the name custom recovery)?
4. Now i have my device rooted, everything including app data backed up with titanium backup, custom recovery installed, now i can unlock bootloader. Once i unlock bootloader i will then need to restore my device with titanium backup. Now my phone is basically fully unlocked (fully jailbroken) and can now flash any custom rom available for my specific device (ATT HOX+ USA model)?
I see something mentioned about ADB but do not understand what this does or is used for? It seems it is another way of backing up the phone but if so, where is the backup file saved and used for exactly?
Just trying to figure this all out guys, please be easy on me. Trust me i've been researching and just trying to put all the pieces to this android puzzle together here, newb to android and first android device (very excited and just want to do it all right and not have issues of course).
If i'm missing any steps or have them out of order please let me know. I understand there is no root yet for this specific device but just saying if everything was available the steps i laid out is what i would do?
Thank you in advance for your patience and help, greatly appreciate the community here and all you guys do for us.
Sorry one more thing. Once i am rooted, unlocked bootloader, flashing custom roms having a great time. What exactly do the warranty people look for if i need to send my device in for replacement under warranty?
Do they void it if my device is rooted, or unlocked bootloader, or both?
If so, is root and or bootloader unlock reversible if i needed to return my device under warranty for say a hardware issue?
I'm sure i can flash the stock rom back so the warranty people won't see a custom one on the device but do they look for Root or Bootloader?
Just trying to cover all my bases here, thank you.
