So, like an idiot I wiped/data/system to install a new Rom and didn't double check to make sure the file was good. I can get into ClockworkMod no problem but I have my nandroid and various other downloaded Roms on my microsd card. I'm trying to adb push a Rom while in Clockwork but it keeps failing. What am I doing wrong? Tips please? Thanks much!
Bump, Bump
What I'm getting is "Protocol Failure" every time I try to push a Rom zip to my sdcard. Thoughts?
Is it the size of the file? I just successfully pushed a smaller image file.
After much frustration and trial and error, I got this fixed and back up and running. Ended up having a driver issue with ADB. Master Zen's flash script came in real handy and I highly recommend it if any of you run into a similar problem!

Hey everybody,
I apologize in advance if this post is a duplicate but I have tried searching for a solution and still lost. Here is what I did: I used the Odin to restore stock rom, then re-rooted using the one click method, then downloaded a rom from theunlockr.com, then used rommanger to install it. My rom has gave me no problems but now when I try to reboot into recovery to install something else(Like the 2.3 keyboard or a lagfix) i get this error:
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted
Can someone please help me? Thank you, BTW I have a Samsung Vibrant running axura-froyo-rom
I had the same problem too.
When I put update.zip at the root directory of internal memory... once I restart the phone (not get into the recovery mode), this file is missing / dissapear. So... I always got this message too :
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted
anybody can help us pleaseeeeee
I got my phone to factory settings using odin then i rerooted my phone and flashed the same custom rom back on and it worked. Try reflashing your phone, backup first, might work.

thanks for reply.
how to use factory setting using odin ? tick the "re-partition" box ?
can you explain to us step by step please ?
I'm so frustated
Did you guys delete the update.zip after rooting?
If you do not see
sdcard/update.zip using a file manager, download the update.zip from my noob guide, move it to internal memory and then try to flash CWR.
Also, look in the bottom of the noob guide (last few posts) for a solution to a RECENT issue with CWR... I assume whatever Koush did in the last update is causing this problem? BUT, there is a fix posted by another XDA user... just a matte of downloading the file and putting it in the right place.

listen to s15's post....he knows what he is talking about. i followed his noob guide in his sticky and everythign worked perfectly! his vids are also very helpful. one thing i have found that works a lot as well is if you download ROM Manager from the market and then click on "fix permissions"... don't know if this would help in this situation but i have had that fix weird stuff.

yeah this, the update.zip is ESSENTIAL for your phone to run the clockwork recovery, it stores all the things needed, and when you click "reinstall packages" your system goes in update.zip and looks for what to boot up and finds CWR and boots that so you see that screen.
Don't delete it if you did.
i have tried numerous times to root, but cant seem to get update.zip file in right place, can anyone help? thanks. challenged noob!!

When you usb into your phone it needs to be in the initial area of your sdcard.
You might have a bad update.zip file. Two things, verify the md5(if possible) from where you got it and check the properties and make sure it's not names update.zip.zip. The later is very common.
Try this method too btw, when I Odin back to stock I always use this one to root again. Follow the 'Automated Method' area.

you will need these drivers AND set your phone to debugging mode (settings/applications/development check USB debugging).

hey all,
Newbie here trying to flash a ROM, i am running into this same error, i have tried everything here and i have one question (might be a stupid question) but my root sd folder is called SD/, not SDCard/ ...is this a path error?
Please note it file must be in the internal card, not the SD card.
This step drove me nuts.
"2. Copy the update.zip (and the ROM) to the INTERNAL SD (not the external SD Card). sdcard/ " (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732458)
i ran into the same problem...how do i get from 3e to CWR?
here's what's shown in my vibrant directory: Android, DCIM, external_sd, LOST.DIR
i dont have an internal sd (the card) so it's not shown?
the path i got error on: /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip
1. when i tried to "reinstall packages" i keep getting the error that the update.zip file cant be found. should i create a folder for it or something? i think it's a matter of pathing but i cant find out the right place to put the file...(to get from 3e to CWR)
2. i see people suggesting boot with odin or sth like that...does that solve my problem and how do i do that?

You definitely have an internal sd card. Use Astro file manager or something similar and put update.zip on the root of internal sd card, meaning not in a folder. It should look like sdcard/update.zip. If you are having the 3e mismatch recovery issue read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423

i go to the link that you linked and ran the script. then i download the update.zip file at the noob guide with a slimbean 4.2.2 rom and addons. this time i would just put it in the root folder (technically not in any folder). when i try to reinstall packages, the screen shows that it is "replacing stock recovery with clock work recovery"... but then it would go back to the 3e.
so...i guess putting the files in the root folder is correct. but someone it still wont let me get tot CWR...

You have to reinstall packages twice for it to work properly. It is normal to not work the first time, just reinstall packages again and you should be good to go. If you keep having issues you should just flash back to stock 2.1 with Odin and go from there.

Does anyone know how to fix a e:/tmp/sideload has perms 40755 issue?
I was flashing a rom and got stuck there.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you!
Whenever I used to get that I'd pull battery do a full wipe and try again. Later I flashed my recovery again and the problem has stopped entirely. I flash ROMs as much as 5 times a day (on a good day).

I haven't seen this error come up before on the q&a board, but I very well could have missed it.
The recovery outputs the details around the error in a /tmp/recovery.log file. Once the error occurs, its best to check this file, /tmp/recovery.log for the details around the error. In order to really troubleshot the specific issue, we'd need a copy of the /tmp/recovery.log and the .zip file being loaded.
Sorry that doesn't directly answer the question, but it will lead to the best technical solution possible! Hope that helps provide some light around recovery .zip flashing troubleshooting!
I just got this trying to install sick sense rom. There is no log file in tmp/

whenever the recovery first boots, it will create a log file in /tmp/recovery.log. this file will get wiped on reboot. the best time to pull and examine the /tmp/recovery.log file is right after the recovery throws the installing error.
if, for some odd reason, there is a recovery.log in /tmp, you can also try checking /cache/recovery.log.
if you can post the file contents up we can help troubleshoot!
i know i've seen people post back, after attempting to flash 2-3 times the error would disappear. i also know i've seen people post that re-flashing the custom recovery, or flashing an updated version helps clear the issue.
hope that helps!
I had this problem too after trying to flash Viper-Rom RC2 version 4. The problem did not occur during the first installation, but after realizing I forgot to format the data partition, and going back and formatting everything and trying the install again, I had the perms 40755 issue. It appears that having a rom that tweaks the file system and permissions will cause this issue on occasion. After pulling the battery like triscuit suggested, it worked just fine. Unfortunately I scoured the entire phone for a recovery.log file and it was nowhere to be found. We may not have a technical reasoning for this issue exactly, but triscuit's workaround appears to take care of the problem.
I seem to have installed it but when I reboot and should be offered the chance to boot into WebOS or Cyanogen I am offered:
boot webOS
boot ClockworkMod
boot webOS recovery
reboot
shutdown
What have I done wrong and could it be qa case of just having to start again? I want to make sure that's safe, that's why I'm posting. Maybe I should add that I couldn't find the folder where the Novacom drivers were installed (on a mac Lion 7.2) so just typed this into Terminal
novacom boot mem:// </Users/tonyohooligan/Desktop/ACMEInstaller
Andy ideas?
There should be a "Space" after the "<" sign.
novacom boot mem:// < /Users/tonyohooligan/Desktop/ACMEInstaller
Did you place the GAPPS moboot Clockwork and CM7 .zip on the cminstall folder?
Also make sure you add "update-" at the beginning of every .zip
Hope that helps.
OK, there wasn't a space so there's something I have got wrong. Can I just start again from the beginning (placing the zip files in the cminstall folder, running ACMEInstaller etc) without damaging anything? Not sure about what you mean about adding 'update-' at the beginning of every .zip, is that to the start of the file name of each .zip if I attempt the procedure again? Thanks for replying BTW, much appreciated.

Yes the "update-" at the start of every files helps the ACMEInstaller identify everything properly. Give it a try again.
Good Luck.
Will do, I'll let you know how it goes....
Rather annoyingly I have got the same result, no Cyanogen option at the multi boot stage. All zip files have gone from the cminstall folder as well. I rather get the feeling that I need to erase everything and start again but have no idea how to do that...
I wonder if I use Clockwork Mod to install Cyanogen, reckon that will work?
Hmm, got a message saying that it can't open the zip (bad). Going to download that file (update-cm-7.1.0-tenderloin-a2.1-fullofbugs.zip) again.

Try running the ACMEUninstaller. You do so the same way you do the Installer and start all over again. Seems weird you cannot get it done. Are you sure the folder is "cminstall" and not CMinstall Cminstall etc?
OK, all installed, it was either the missing space or a dodgy .zip file. Either way thanks for taking the time to help me out atapia984 it is really appreciated.

Anytime Have fun. Keep a look around at some of the other threads for troubleshooting. It is all out there.

Thought I should just outline what I did to put this right in case anyone else has the same problem. I downloaded the ACMEUninstaller from here:
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...-cW9Cw&usg=AFQjCNHZTu7Aghf80vOjo4Pa7Feslo0SmA
and put it on the desktop. Then I made sure the Touchpad was connected via USB and put the Touchpad in recovery mode (reboot, hold down volume up before power comes back on again) then opened the Terminal and typed:
novacom boot mem:// < /Users/tonyohooligan/Desktop/ACMEUninstaller
This deleted everything from the Touchpad. I then followed the instructions again and this time Cyanogen installed perfectly. Seems like a pretty damn good Alpha version as well, haven't had a crash yet. Thanks once again to atapia for all the help.
One last thing atapia, is there anywhere to report bugs as I find them without getting on the devs nerves?
Ok, I rooted my NT using external SD card and was able to toggle between android 2.3.4 and B&N OS. I have been spending days trying to figure out how to upgrade to CM 10.2 (and have been unsuccessful due to endless tutorials posting invalid files). I finally found a tutorial on this forum and there was a part that specifically said to not mess with the drive that my nook was plugged into. Well...too many windows up, too long on forums etc...long story short...I messed with that drive.
So now my NT boots up to the B&N start up screen; but I get a forced restart error and an error message that says that nook root file stopped working. The touch screen doesn't work and I can't do anything but power off.
Is there ANYONE who can help me? I'll be eternally grateful!
You might consider trying this repart.img method described at http://raywaldo.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/.
files won't extract
When I googled feverishly for a solution, I did find that website and tried that method. The problem that I'm having with this entire process is that most of these files are invalid, missing a part or corrupted. I've tried using WinRAR and 7-zip and neither program is able to successfully extract the files; this repart img included. This project of mine has turned into a frustrating debacle!
Thank you for your reply, though!
I'd suggest you burn a pre-made SD CM10.x image from http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013...id-4-3-for-nook-tablet-imgsdc-boot-09aug2013/ and see if you can successfully boot and run it.
If that works you can proceed to restore the internal emmc image either by using the repart.img method or by flashing flash_stock_1.4.2.zip from https://github.com/succulent/acclaim_recovery_sdcard. See also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575489 for potential helpful info and pointers.
When I extract files, this is the message I get from most of the files I unzip. I tried the cm10.2 img file and I couldn't extract it. I included a screenshot of the error message I keep getting. I've tried several different unzip programs and it's always the same error.
Bad download? Redownloaded and same error?

Did you try the alternate mirror on Mediafire http://www.mediafire.com/download/bo2qu6v4qo9p6a2/cm_acclaim_10.2.0-RC0_13OCT2013_HD_SDC_IMG.7z?
Also FWIW I use 7-zip archive manager program (www.7-zip.org/download.html‎).
I'm really hoping this is a simple question for someone. I am trying to restore a backup and I keep getting the "Couldn't open directory" error. I am using Cmod recovery v4.0.0.4 (yes I know it's very old but I have also tried a newer version with the same results). I flashed the ROM from 4.0 (I believe) to 4.2. The tablet is working fine I would just like to restore my backup.. Can someone please tell me where the program is looking for these files and how to create the proper directory structure. I have moved them to a number of different places without any luck. I see the backup directories(and files, etc) I am just missing something. Also the program tells me it is writing the errors to a recovery.log file but I am unable to locate it. The backups are on the hard drive not an sdcard. I also moved them to my PC just in case. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! Jim
