Sounds to me like its used for advertising.
Cell broadcast would be a message sent by your operator to tell you which antenna is closer to your current location...
Push messages would be some kind of advertisement made by your operator like new ringtones, mp3's, special deals...
Hope this helps. Just in case, if you read the forums carefully, you'll see that many people were complaining about this Cell Broadcasting messages on Xperia S.
The new firmware will solve this issue, for example.

When i go into my SMS Message Settings down near the bottom i get an option to toggle Cell Broadcast (CB)... Then from there i can recieve on my channel or all channels. Then you can select languages. Well my question is what is it & what does it do? Is it for advertisements? Amber Alerts? Does anyone know?
I've always wondered myself so after reading your message I googled it and this is what I found:

Thanks for the link... That is a pretty cool feature, i wonder if t-mo has it enabled yet? Could be so useful. Thanks again.
I don't think its a matter of anyone enabling it but a matter of who really needs it. The average user may need to send a text to multiple people and can do that. Where cell broadcast comes in is when you need to send a text to a large number of people at once. My university uses this to send out emergency messages on all networks. My school has probably 15000 students and faculty then figure in another couple thousand family and alumni members that live in the community. Hope this helps

Is there an app that allows you to send messages via your gps (satellite) to other android users?
gps system does not allow to actually send something...
In using GPS just recive a signal from a satellites, you don't(and can't) send anything.
yeah, I allready thought so
But before i got my phone I thought I saw an app on the internet which allowed you to send messages to someone else
The only thing you needed was a special code...
But I never found that pageagain.
Maby I had read it wrong
I only know sending messages through data.. I am using whatsapp for that.

And can't you use your g3 as a satellite phone? (with calling)
I just stumbled upon this really useful device which many of us might already know about...Gmate...
which uses a network ic to connect to cellular service and provides you added functionality of a phone to your tablet via bluetooth and a special app from playstore...
http://www.skyroam.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=44&Itemid=67&lang=en
The skyroam app...it acts as an interface between the two devices and lets you optimize the phone function on the tablet...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simo.simomate&feature=search_result
But my real concern is that our android phones already have a network ic working in them with a bluetooth chip...
So is there an app like skyroam already made which can enable us to make calls and use the network functions on our TFP via the android phone...i tried searching for it but all in vain...
If not already developed...This is an interesting concept and will be quite useful to use tablet for phone functions especially handsfree voice calls, video calls and using the 3G internet from the phone (though we can use network by creating a hotspot)...
My point is why buy the same thing twice in form of gmate when we have all the ingredients already working right with us...we just need an app...
Can anyone help me with this...?
The closest I've seen is TabletTalk. The developer seems to be aiming for the type of functionality you describe, and much of it is in there already. I find it very useful.
Tablet talk has been good for me. You can answer and make calls right from your tablet. You do need to be paired with your phone through blue tooth or wifi.

Who is this guy, Dr. Seuss? Sorry.....I couldn't resist.
Thanks for this thread OP, I have been looking for this functionality for awhile now, but wasn't sure which way to go with it.
Am I correct to understand that something like tablet talk using your cell for calls?

With tablet talk you can answer and place calls through your tablet and caller ID shows up on your tab, you can also send and receive text messages.
The call audio does NOT get routed through the tablet though. I believe you need to have a BT headset if you want to route the call audio. So when you get or place a call from the tab it actually activates the call on your phone. If you have a BT headset audio gets routed (I believe, I dont use BT headsets so dont hold me to that) otherwise you either have to pick up your phone and talk like you normally would, or you can activate your phone's speakerphone from the app on the tab
You may want to take a look at grooveIP, which uses your google voice number to call and receive calls without a cell network. Works great on tabs and phones and you can even receive calls. Works great for me so far!

Hi,
I recently helped a colleague purchase a Galaxy SIII phone here in China, Guangzhou and made sure I checked the phone over completely before I purchased it.
I've done a search on the forums and check out anything that may be similar, but to no avail.
The problem is:
The phone will not receive any text messages, or at least they don't go through to the messaging app.
Text messages were being received normally for around a week
I disabled a bunch of pre-installed Chinese crap that is unfortunately not un-installable as it's baked into the ROM
It happened once, so I factory reset it, and then tested it. The text messages worked fine
I then disabled the Chinese stuff once again and installed Skype. Just to be sure, I sent more test text messages, and they were all received fine.
Around one week later, here we are, she says that text messages are not being received again.
All other functions of the phone are working. Internet / Edge network, sending texts, Play store, everything. Just not the receiving of texts!
I'm fairly confused as to this behaviour, particularly as it seems the text messages are working for a time limited period.
I had some inklings of what it could be:
- The SIII takes a micro-sim, the shop "manually" chopped the SIM using a cutter. Could this have damaged the SIM and caused this behaviour?
- The phone itself is faulty
- Something is up with the China Mobile settings / network and she needs to call them.
What would be your diagnosis, ideas, solutions XDA'ers?
Further information of any kind is, of course, available on request.
**** My ideas for a fix ****
Root the bastard and get a standard UK ROM on the phone to see if it works. However, I have some concerns. Years ago, when I bought my first HTC desire, when I rooted and put a UK ROM on it, I discovered that my phone was an imported Thai version of the phone and almost bricked it into a reboot loop as the phone didn't like a different regions ROM being loaded on.
I had to go through a convoluted process of making a specially edited SD-card to fool the phone into accepting different ROMS. Is this the case with the Galaxy SIII or have times moved on to more sophisticated means?
Thanks.

Have you try other messaging apps like Hancent SMS or Go SMS to confirm that msg service is not working?
Or maybe the CSC is causing the problem?

Open the stock messaging app. In its menu go to settings. Check that there is a number recorded under message centre. If not use Google to find the number for the carrier you are with and enter it.
I'm on an unrooted phone with a stock Rom and twice messaging has stopped working. The cause was that this number had spontaneously disappeared.

Ok, I've tried:
- alternative messaging apps, and they're not picking it up either.
- the message centre number.
When you say CSC? You mean the carrier code? It was bought in China and fitted with a Chinese ROM, but I'll look at the ROM settings and see what it is.
Thanks.
U dial *#1234# then you can see your csc
CSC – (Consumer Software Customization) Refers to the specific country or carriers for that said firmware is being build.
This where it contains the default settings of each specific geographical region, carrier network providers and network data connections.

I am having this problem. It was all working fine then suddenly it stopped. I don't know what could be the cause but I fooled around with the settings, deleted old text messages and then suddenly I received dozens of text messages.
It's like my phone isn't trying to receive any text messages. It can send text messages out but it won't receive any.
I am using Omega 31.1.
Can someone help me out please?

I had the same issue,
I changed the Network options from gsm only to "Auto" mode, and apparently it worked for me.
I don't own a Gear S yet, so apologies if the answer to this is obvious from using the device. I've read numerous reviews and a few pages back in the history here without finding what I'm looking for..
I'm curious about the specifics of how the paired smartphone and the Gear S communicate over the 3G network, and whether any carrier "shenanigans" are involved. For example when an SMS arrives on the smartphone does it send a notification to the watch via TCP/IP? If I reply on the watch is the reply relayed through the smartphone the same way? I don't think it can work this way because if so the smartphone would need to be powered up and connected to the carrier network for the "I only carry my Gear S when I go out to dinner" use-case. However, if the SMS is sent by the carrier network directly to the Gear S, that implies the carrier has to know about the device and it has to be somehow associated with the "line" assigned to the smartphone. If this were the case then the user reports of "cross-carrier" operation (smartphone on VZW, Gear S on ATT for example) couldn't work.
Since I can't deduce how it works from the feature set, it would be great if someone who knows the scoop could point me in the right direction. Thanks.
