Some ROMs ive downloaded seem to be just a stock ROM with twlauncher replaced by other launchers available on the market with extra apps added.

Use a kitchen.

Unlikely to be just stock + different launcher but you would need to read the roms specifications .
Point out rom version you describe please .

It sounds to me like what you want to do could be achieved with a Kitchen, which is a program that can help you customize your existing ROM by adding and removing pieces from it. The kitchen then normally outputs a ZIP file you can flash.
Some kitchens run on your handset, some run on your PC.
I am new to Galaxy S II (I've been a Vibrant user for years), but I am sure a quick search of the forums will find you some kitchens.

I am a complete noob to this even if I get one of these kitchens i wont know what do next, will it have tutorials?

Essentially you're looking for an easy way to do this (like 90% of people on here), and there isn't one.
If you really want to make roms you wouldn't be asking basic questions on here. You'd be doing the research/learning necessary to achieve what you say you want to do.

This says it all. You're not even close to having the ability to make your own ROM.
And before anyone flames, I happily admit that I'm not close either. I've done the research, but lack the time and - especially - skills necessary.
There's a lot of tools that will help you theme a ROM, probably a better point to start from. Check the general android themes forum.

I know im not close but there was a time when the best rom producers didnt even know what a rom was.
Im just tryin to find out where to start and since theres a lot of rom developers on this site i think its the best place to ask

Agree - everyone has to start somewhere. But I reckon most devs here have some coding/programming skills as a base - something I certainly don't possess.
Here's a noob's guide that I've been promising myself to try one day, when I have 8 or 10 years spare... seems a good starting point anyway. It's for the HD2 but the general theory seems universal.
Otherwise, google.

can someone please tell me what is the best official samsung firmware regarding modem and kernel .im on a vodafone contract .
i made the mistake of being a newbie and not knowing at the time how to back up my firmware i got with the phone .
i have found that most custom roms i have tried dont compare to my original software i got with the phone as far as battery life goes .
thanks in advance for any replies
thank you
In my opionion CyanogenMods rom is better in every way then the costum samsung fireware. Because loads of bloatware is not hogging your battery.
But keep in mind that i am a root noob myself.
On topic:Try looking for Intratechs thread. I think links to the official samsung firmware are provided
If i was helpfull please hit the thank you button. Cost you nothing but a click.

Buddy i just joined and from what i have been reading through out the many threads here it is all down to choice. if i was you i do a little research and read peoples opinions from the threads..for example you are looking for a modem. Go the modem thread and see what people are saying...I know it is a bit to much to read but that is how you will gain knowledge and that will help you to tweak your phone to your choosing..Hope this helps
Not really bcause i agree with you. I am just saying dont flame a person for asking a question. Because in your opinion the awnser can be clear, but for the person reading it it probaply isn't hence the question.

Looking for 4n1 Reboot Menu

I've been trying to hunt this down for a while. I need the zip for the 4n1 reboot for ICS 3.11. I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421265 but it just bricked the phone. Is there a flashable zip for this mod? I can't find it!

Thanks for these useless posts.

Just out of curiosity, what will you be doing differently to your ROM that makes it the way you like it? Pretty much everything that you could do has already been done and is available to download and flash. If you can't make the 4 in 1 menu work, you are probably better off flashing one that has been done already. Edit the build.prop to say "Shawns Custom ROM" or whatever you want. Good luck in your endeavor to make a rom that has already been made

No, but it is no different really than people taking someone's rom and removing apks before flashing to make it just how they like it. As long as he doesn't publish it as a Rom for everyone to use without giving proper credit to whos work he used I don't see what the big deal is. Just help the guy out or don't say anything.
yeah come on guys dont be so hard on him. I have to say tho Con's reply was pretty funny tho
He was asking about a flash able zip file. One to flash over an existing ROM. Flashing a ROM with it built in would solve the problem he described.

He just wants to add the power menu, not create a a Rom. I also have been looking for the same thing. At this point I like stock rooted but there is no option with the power menu.
If you check Scott's ROMs, he has a flashable tweaks zip that includes extended restart menu. I think it's based on Leedroid tweaks, and Scott offers it as a start to modding your own ROM.
Sorry I don't have a link right now. Just Google Scott's Tweaks or Leedroid Tweaks. Good luck.
And you shouldn't have to justify asking for modding help in a development "general" forum, but welcome to the xda Rezound community.

WTF is so sacred about the Android OS?

I am an apple convert, go ahead fanboys, flame me all you want. I am a tech geek and I try everything out. I want to learn and I want to play around with the toys that I buy.
I have fiddled with the SDK and the SDE. The company I work for built an Android device for military use, so I know a little about the processes used in hacking and development.
The thing I want to know is WHY is it in just about every thread I read, there is an assumption that everyone automatically KNOWS how to install a rom or kernel or anything else of that nature.
Go to the Aroma installer thread for example. There is a comment from the developer that states "Do not ask how to install Aroma. If you have to ask then you don't know what it's for". Well, bull****. I want to install a custom rom on my phone that utilizes the Aroma installer, but i cannot find any instructions or documentation on how to install Aroma. I can find all sorts of examples on how to use it, but not how to install it.
Now I created a theme way back when for the G1, I previously owned the Thunderbolt and have installed roms on it. But each device is different. Why is it so hard to make a post to help out the new guy?
I am sorry for the rant, and if the devs want to delete this post, then please do so. But I am frustrated to hell with the android community spouting how much better they are than anybody else. It;'s like some damn good ole boys club from redneck USA. Why not help spur on the community and share the knowledge?
because dear sir there are a lot of android forums out there, but this is a mobile phone and tablet development forum,, with rules that you need to read, and a journey of learning you need to take,, this involves reading and searching and accumulating knowledge, a far cry from having Apple sauce wiped from your chin
And yes,the journey is mentioned in the forum rules. Welcome to the world of free people

First u don't install aroma its a installer. U flash a aroma Rom the same as any other. It just guides you thru the install. Depending on the dev it has options to pick thru durning install. Like auto removing built in apps or installing a theme. It's just a installer.

I am trying to install the Dragon ICS rom, but it uses Aroma which I have no experience with.
I guess trial and error is not the best way to go with these things. I finally figured out how to get Aroma installed via the Clockwork recovery, and then went on to install Dragon ICS, the kernel failed, not the device will not turn on.... oh well...
Back to the drawing board I guess, Thanks anyway...
To me what matters is people who are smart enough to understand a phone OS usually pick Android, I mean just because Westlife outsell the Beatles does that really make them better? No it just means they more popular because of the image in the same way reality show acts are guaranteed a number 1.

You don't have to do anything except flashing the Rom like usual.
The installer is shipped within the rom.zip.
The only difference is that you get an interface after you accepted to flash the rom, which let's you choose which parts/mods you want to apply.
I guess you modified the rom.zip, because you told "you got it installed", reflash the unmodified Rom and just follow the on screen instructions.

[Q] Which rom to choose?

Hi guys, Ive been using cm9.1 for some time, but days ago I compared my battery life with a friends phone who's using stock samsung 4.03 and realised he had like 5 or 6 more hours. It would be great if you people could tell me which good roms considering battery life. Thank you very much!

I advice you the latest samsung roms from samfirmware stock rom, use the proper rom for your carrier or area.
And search one of the great kernels that you have from our great developers here and you will be happy.
Thats what i wanned to know thank you!

If your comparing your phone with your friends, you would have to be doing exactly the same things/have the same settings/apps running etc.
Then if there was a 6 hour difference a conclusion could be drawn.

Best rom, advice on choosing rom etc etc its the same bloody thing and simply NOT allowed for many reasons but mostly been that is just clones other threads that are also opinionated. There is no need for threads like this you should be trying roms yourself and seeing what works bets for you, not creating topics that already exist to ask and answer the same stupid questions over and over.

All roms are google because google makes android but whenever you buy a phone the company puts there software on top of android. The nexus didnt have any software added so its a pure google rom. Go to the thread I sent you and look for CyanogenMod.

ROMs are phone dependant. What you are looking for is an unaltered version of android, like your nexus had. The closest you will find is a ROM like Cyanogen mod... CM for short, or one that says AOSP in the name (Android open Source Project).
Really you should read the stickies in the main forum and research a little about installing ROMs on a phone. You should not just jump in with no knowledge and expect to get it the way you want right away. This is a lot of the time a trial and error thing until you find a ROM that suits your tastes.
Good luck in your search for a new ROM.

You have a lot of reading and research to do if you ended up paying someone on Craigslist to root your phone. For all you know it only has root and still has the locked bootloader and stock recovery. READ, READ, and then READ SOME MORE.

Yes the galaxy nexus and galaxy note 2 are two total different roms. The note has samsung touchwiz which has alot of great features that pure aosp doesnt but if you are looking for aosp I would suggest cm10.1 or liquidsmooth my 2 favorit aosp roms. Just like the guy stated be sure you know what you are doing before you delve any deeper and have a bricked phone!

A good start for you is go to settings then all the way at the bottom select about phone. See what build your phone is on and also what andeois version (4.1.2 oe 4.2.2 etc) search for qhat your phone has as those and you can find out if your running a stock or custom rom. From there someone can better help you choose a rom to test. But keep in mind roms come down to what you like not qhat everyone else likes. I'm currently running the transnebula tab rom and loving right now. But always read read read before doing anything if you're new to this. Then when you think you're ready read some more then test

Read more.... lots more and jump in! It's a lot if work, but you can make your own, but you will need research. You won't get the info you need by asking, you won't get enough to succeed. Sure I could point you to the ROM kitchen thread or a thread with guides to compile and AOSP ROM from source, but I'm betting you dont know what that means yet. Which is why I say research then when you get stuck people are very helpful.
Ps guys I agree he's not ready yet and is probably best running someone's work, but I always encourage new development
