WTF is so sacred about the Android OS? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am an apple convert, go ahead fanboys, flame me all you want. I am a tech geek and I try everything out. I want to learn and I want to play around with the toys that I buy.
I have fiddled with the SDK and the SDE. The company I work for built an Android device for military use, so I know a little about the processes used in hacking and development.
The thing I want to know is WHY is it in just about every thread I read, there is an assumption that everyone automatically KNOWS how to install a rom or kernel or anything else of that nature.
Go to the Aroma installer thread for example. There is a comment from the developer that states "Do not ask how to install Aroma. If you have to ask then you don't know what it's for". Well, bull****. I want to install a custom rom on my phone that utilizes the Aroma installer, but i cannot find any instructions or documentation on how to install Aroma. I can find all sorts of examples on how to use it, but not how to install it.
Now I created a theme way back when for the G1, I previously owned the Thunderbolt and have installed roms on it. But each device is different. Why is it so hard to make a post to help out the new guy?
I am sorry for the rant, and if the devs want to delete this post, then please do so. But I am frustrated to hell with the android community spouting how much better they are than anybody else. It;'s like some damn good ole boys club from redneck USA. Why not help spur on the community and share the knowledge?

because dear sir there are a lot of android forums out there, but this is a mobile phone and tablet development forum,, with rules that you need to read, and a journey of learning you need to take,, this involves reading and searching and accumulating knowledge, a far cry from having Apple sauce wiped from your chin
And yes,the journey is mentioned in the forum rules. Welcome to the world of free people

First u don't install aroma its a installer. U flash a aroma Rom the same as any other. It just guides you thru the install. Depending on the dev it has options to pick thru durning install. Like auto removing built in apps or installing a theme. It's just a installer.

I completely understand this part. This is what I am trying to find information on. How do I get the Meta-INF folder onto my Galaxy S3 so that I can utilize it's features and functionality to install the ROM.
In the past, i used clockwork mod to install roms onto other devices. This is where I am stuck and where I am trying to locate information.
Thank you for the reply

I am trying to install the Dragon ICS rom, but it uses Aroma which I have no experience with.
I guess trial and error is not the best way to go with these things. I finally figured out how to get Aroma installed via the Clockwork recovery, and then went on to install Dragon ICS, the kernel failed, not the device will not turn on.... oh well...
Back to the drawing board I guess, Thanks anyway...

To me what matters is people who are smart enough to understand a phone OS usually pick Android, I mean just because Westlife outsell the Beatles does that really make them better? No it just means they more popular because of the image in the same way reality show acts are guaranteed a number 1.

The last time I checked, XDA was a DEVELOPMENT forum; not an Android forum. There are plenty of iOS dev threads on XDA. Go troll somewhere else!
As for the OP, AROMA should do all the work for you. Just flash the ROM that uses it, and follow the setup.

On a serious note, I'm beginning to understand the OP rant on this topic..
He has asked for assistance.. you can either contribute to making another well-rounded Android user or just ignore it all together. Chiming in with useless insults is what has now made yet another thread pointless and has now made 1000000000001 threads on this topic that still offer little to no clear assistance.

You don't have to do anything except flashing the Rom like usual.
The installer is shipped within the rom.zip.
The only difference is that you get an interface after you accepted to flash the rom, which let's you choose which parts/mods you want to apply.
I guess you modified the rom.zip, because you told "you got it installed", reflash the unmodified Rom and just follow the on screen instructions.

[Q] Noob to XDA Dev. Looking to see if I understand this right regarding ICS ROMs.

Hey guys! I've lurked around here for a while. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II for ATT a few months ago after being a longtime iPhone user. Therefore, I'm fairly new to the whole Android tweaking process. I want to install an ICS ROM onto my phone, particularly CM9. I've read the stickies, and am really trying to understand, but at the same time, do not wish to brick my phone. So could someone tell me if this is correct? Or where I'm wrong? Based on what I've read here, to install ICS, I need to...
1. Root my phone as outlined in the thread for that. (The one about not activating the yellow triangle. Since I'm on 2.3.6, I'll need to use "Odin3 One-Click Downloader".)
2. Backup my apps and texts and crap using Titanium Backup to my SD card.
3. Install the proper kernel (where do I find this?) using Mobile Odin.
4. Make sure CWM is active, backup NAND (I assume this is an option?) and flash CM9.
5. Flash Google Apps.
6. Restore my Ti backup.
Thanks guys for the help! And sorry if I'm being stupid/completely misunderstanding.
Read, useless thread is useless

Read, read and read some more. Do a search for Hellraiser as there are no true ICS ROMs for this phone yet, only i900 ports.
If you need to ask questions like this, you are not ready for ICS and ICS is not ready for you.
Since I9100 kernel source code has only been out for a week and we had a bunch of I777-specific **** to fix - while lots of progress has been made things are not quite working yet.
man some people are rude in here....
And others are lazy. Welcome to XDA.
There are a lot of different roms. Usually they rewrite the kernel within the install of the rom. But basically you have the right idea...

Facts are facts, loser. There is not yet a fully-functioning official ICS ROM released for the i777, so any talk of one is premature. The guy admits in the title of this thread that he is a noob and doesn't quite understand. These are exactly the people who should not be flashing ANYTHING, let alone a ROM that is not ready for primetime. But keep on encouraging him and others so that the forum gets filled with people needing help to fix what they messed up. I'm sure you'll be rewarded with tons of adulation for your efforts. Troll indeed.

Unlikely to be just stock + different launcher but you would need to read the roms specifications .
Point out rom version you describe please .

It sounds to me like what you want to do could be achieved with a Kitchen, which is a program that can help you customize your existing ROM by adding and removing pieces from it. The kitchen then normally outputs a ZIP file you can flash.
Some kitchens run on your handset, some run on your PC.
I am new to Galaxy S II (I've been a Vibrant user for years), but I am sure a quick search of the forums will find you some kitchens.
I am a complete noob to this even if I get one of these kitchens i wont know what do next, will it have tutorials?

Essentially you're looking for an easy way to do this (like 90% of people on here), and there isn't one.
If you really want to make roms you wouldn't be asking basic questions on here. You'd be doing the research/learning necessary to achieve what you say you want to do.

This says it all. You're not even close to having the ability to make your own ROM.
And before anyone flames, I happily admit that I'm not close either. I've done the research, but lack the time and - especially - skills necessary.
There's a lot of tools that will help you theme a ROM, probably a better point to start from. Check the general android themes forum.
I know im not close but there was a time when the best rom producers didnt even know what a rom was.

Agree - everyone has to start somewhere. But I reckon most devs here have some coding/programming skills as a base - something I certainly don't possess.
Here's a noob's guide that I've been promising myself to try one day, when I have 8 or 10 years spare... seems a good starting point anyway. It's for the HD2 but the general theory seems universal.
Otherwise, google.

Just out of curiosity, what will you be doing differently to your ROM that makes it the way you like it? Pretty much everything that you could do has already been done and is available to download and flash. If you can't make the 4 in 1 menu work, you are probably better off flashing one that has been done already. Edit the build.prop to say "Shawns Custom ROM" or whatever you want. Good luck in your endeavor to make a rom that has already been made

No, but it is no different really than people taking someone's rom and removing apks before flashing to make it just how they like it. As long as he doesn't publish it as a Rom for everyone to use without giving proper credit to whos work he used I don't see what the big deal is. Just help the guy out or don't say anything.
yeah come on guys dont be so hard on him. I have to say tho Con's reply was pretty funny tho
He was asking about a flash able zip file. One to flash over an existing ROM. Flashing a ROM with it built in would solve the problem he described.

He just wants to add the power menu, not create a a Rom. I also have been looking for the same thing. At this point I like stock rooted but there is no option with the power menu.
If you check Scott's ROMs, he has a flashable tweaks zip that includes extended restart menu. I think it's based on Leedroid tweaks, and Scott offers it as a start to modding your own ROM.
Sorry I don't have a link right now. Just Google Scott's Tweaks or Leedroid Tweaks. Good luck.
And you shouldn't have to justify asking for modding help in a development "general" forum, but welcome to the xda Rezound community.

Not to sound mean... But if you are asking about basic stuff, you might want to:
- Read some threads before you start flashing
- use the search function
- follow the thread instructions following the above two suggestions.
Try to troubleshoot yourself first... All your issues are solvable by searching.

I agree with this POV.
If someone is having trouble simply installing/updating CWM, they absolutely need to do more reading, or chances are they will badly mess up their phone.
Using ODIN and installing CWM are rooting 101, and I would advise any SGS3 user to make sure they know these 2 bits of software inside and out, before jumping into CM9/CM10, as both are not fully stable, and will require additional knowledge to get them working correctly, if it is yet possible given the current build states of each.
If CWM installs, or ODIN flashes are not pieces of cake for you, you should probably pick a different ROM until they are.
Yes we all started somewhere, but a big tip from experienced users to noobs, is to learn how to swim, before jumping in the deep end. And CM9/CM10 is definitely the "deep end" of the Android pool, at least until the builds reach RC status, if not at least beta, as things wont work, or are yet to come upstream.
It takes as much time to flame as it does to post helpful advice. How do you want to be remembered?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Telling some one that cant swim, how to jump into the deep end, is not my idea of "helpful" advice.
Sometimes the "helpful" advice is.. "you are not ready yet"
It may not be what the person wanting to jump into the deep end wants to hear, but it may save their phone, until they know what they need to, to get where they want to be.

That being said, I am willing to help out, given what I know, but I am willing to bet there are posts already done that lay it out there, step by step, on how to recover from this...???
Again, to anyone seeing this, not trying to be a **** here, but the search function really has tremendous value when looking, don't just try one term, use several variants of terms when searching. I bet you'll find something, heck..you may find out something off your first search topic that'll get you there better or quicker.
OP ...have you looked at this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736476
Well I'm yet to find a detailed guide, I haven't been able to find one - I'm not going to do something based off a bad or poorly written guide, I am not going to risk breaking my new galaxy s3. I am yet to find a guide that suits my standard of usage; it would be nice for someone to point one out to me instead of making a debate oh whether I can or can not do something - please don't consdend me.

I take it you have the SGS3 for AT&T, correct?
What exactly do you need a guide for, upgrading CWM?
I take you are rooted, what version of CWM do you have, and what version are you trying to upgrade to?
What version & build of CM are you trying to install, the file name should give the specifics?
Does the ODIN count matter to you?
okay download CWM for your phone from :http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Rename it to recovery.img , and copy the file to your phone's internal /sdcard
Grab android terminal emulator from the play store and run the same commands starting with su in the box below.
just type: su
then
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

Yes.. but didnt he ask permission to use PA's, aokp's and other teams work or did he broke rules by telling that he has made all of those, did he had some malicious code on rom or what? (I know it's not the last reason but you get the point)

Actually... He is still hard at work and been pushing out updates of his amazing rom like crazy even though he's not on Xda anymore, if you did not know that
but here is the link to his work

Thank you, so the ban reason was kanging. Thats all I wanted to know.

Not just kanging. He also refused to post kernel sources, and THAT is a direct violation to the GPL.

Okay, i don't understand why he didn't release/post source. Can he have some kind of backdoor to device or is there any other reasons?

I don't wanna spend any thought wondering why banned people did what they did. They're banned, end of.

I think he gets that. It seems to me he is asking what he is to make sure his device can not be back door if he is running his rom.
I don't understand why people act the way they do over simple questions. There is no reason for all the attitude. Isn't this site for helping people further understand the way something works or just helping other out?

I think you miss the point.
Firstly, this site is a place to share and learn dev skills.
Secondly, because of the rules and the nature of the violation (GPL breach) you will find that the "....gone and never to be mentioned again" attitude is almost universally prevalent amongst senior members and up. It's just the nature of the beast.
The OP question has been answered so best to quietly forget and let the matter fade into history...........spot the subtle hint
Security has nothing to do with ban.. Every os has its potential security breaches. See Windows, java, flash, Mac os, even Linux have their security holes.
So xda is only focusing on gpl rules. Every work must come with sources. If not you're not admitted to go on here. That's all.
You know where to find the firmware, the place seems to have a forum, ask directly there.

If they bother to read and follow the rules .
Simple answer would be to PM a mod in the development section and ask the question why has this rom been blocked .

I've been using jellybam for some time now and think its great.
However, I want to try a different ROM now and no matter how many times I try wiping all the caches and data, when I flash a new ROM, its always jellybam that boots up??
How do I flash a new ROM?

Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache (if you want format cache, data, system, preload and even sd if you want. I format all of those.) then flash new rom your internal or from external card depends did you format sd. Then flash gapps and your ready to go.

I did ask a mod, and he said he's not at liberty to divulge the details, however he assures me it was nothing personal, so thats good. Guess he just didnt follow the rules, i mean it is their forum.
