Disable wifi and enable only with password? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to see if there is a program that will completely disable wifi and only re-enable it if a password is entered. would like to give android phone to daughter, but would only use wifi connection at my approval. She's a good kid, but I don't want to needlessly enable her to go and explore 'the world'...

HOW TO DISABLE THE "Data connection automatic" in Athena

Hi
I have a issue here.
Whenever I open my athena, it always connect to Data connection automatically ( I am using T-mobile). Even if I try to turn it off, but asap after that it try to connect the data.
(i had the same problem with Kaiser. I could not turn on TOMTOM7 only until I try to turn of Data connection, then asap turn on TT7 it would work).
But actually I only use the phone's calling function.
I don't care about other services from T-mobile, especially I don't know the useness of Data connection in my phone.
So, could u tell me the way to turn it of and only turn on when need.
thanks
Probably the best way is to go to Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections icon > Advanced tab > Select Networks. Select "My Work Network" for both drop-downs. This should force it to only use wifi and not the cell network data connection. However, it may then turn wifi on - I don't know for certain since I use the cell network for data 99.9% of the time.
You could also try to delete the data connection info. I don't know if it will let you delete all connections.
I don't think there's a way to completely stop it from trying to connect to something, as long as some program is requesting a data connection. So the first option might still give you a dialog box telling you it can't connect, and I'm guessing the second option might ask you to set up a data connection.
I use this little tool. Place it in your SD Card and use File Explorer to create a shortcut in Windows/Start Menu/Programs/"to whatever folder you want". Run the application and disable anything you don't like in TMobile Services.
wow.
thank you friend.
i will use it.
it will help me to keep energy, because when we don't use data connection automatic, it will let the phone stay longer.
Wonderful program
thanks so much
this program is wonderful.
it disable GPRS automatic stupid function that we don't use with Tmobile.
Recommend for other friends.
This program is useful when use it with Kaiser, cos I always have to turn of data connection manual and then asap try to turn on TOMTOM7. Now it is free.
Thanks!
That's a great app! Will save me some $$$.

Jetstream hotspot?

I know this is not allowed by att, but is this something that can be hacked, or is it a hardware issue? Or at least tethering?
Guess it should be solved as a voice call functionality block. S-OFF + simple property modification. Without custom ROM.
I'm sure a hack will be found for it, once the device is rooted and such. Much like the Sprint device ROMs come with the Wireless Tether application, there will likely be one for the Jetstream once we can get the device rooted.
Greetings... Believe it or not, I "accidently" found a way to activate it, without root. I installed super box from the market, and when I was in the power save menu, the hotspot line said off, but clicking it took me to the regular settings menu and the menu to the right allowed me to turn it on, give it a name and set security! The odd thing is that the list of menus on the left is not highlighted as to which one you are in, so you can't access it through "settings," only superbox. There may be another way, but this works!
HI,
I am new to Android with my first device being the Jetstream. I would love to have hotspot capabilities, would it be possible for you o provide a stepwise outline of how you gt this feature to work?
Thanks so much.
Ok, I downloaded the program and as you said, I was able to turn on the wi-fi hotspot capability; however, even when I changed the SSID name it showed up in other devices as "HTC Portable Hotspot" and even if the security was left open it kept asking for a password. I changed the security to require a password, but when I entered it it did not allow me to connect.
Did you do anything else?
I think you are on track.... The password is your choice, and is only an option if you pick one of the two security protocols. The password would be entered on the other device trying to connect to the jetstream. If the name is fixed, I'm at a loss, didn't have that issue...
any luck with this?

[Q] Block Wifi if VPN is down?

I want to ensure nothing on my phone as access to wifi if my vpn is not connected. Anybody know how I could achieve this?
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
You might want to give Tasker a try. Llama (it's free / haven't used it though), or another Task automation tool might work too. It depends on how the app works, but you may have to do one or two things manually. For instance
Example Pseudo-code:
Code:
IF VPN app OPENED (
TURN OFF WIFI
SET VARIABLE vpnfrontend=1)
IF VPN app LOSES FOCUS (closed) (
ASK "Is VPN Enabled?"
IF YES (
ENABLE WIFI
SET VARIABLE vpnfrontend=0 )
IF NO (
SET VARIABLE vpnfrontend=0 ) )
That's the best I can think of off the top of my head.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the reply closeone.
I purchased Tasker a couple of days ago. Hopefully I'll be able to do this - afraid there are going to be some manual steps though. I bought WifiJumper to auto connect to hotspots (known or unknown) so my wifi phone (Samsung Galaxy Player YP-G70) would be more like a cell phone. I thought if I could get OpenVPN working on my phone it automatically tries to reconnect but it is sometimes a slow process - thereby leaving my wifi connection open for a minute or so.
The ultimate goal here is: Android is a lot like CarrierIQ in that it tracks every IP you log in from. So I want to use a vpn so the IP I login from is the same one no matter where I'm at. I'm not a hacker, pedo, or even using P2P - I just want my privacy. Kind of a principal type of thing.
Your code is similar to what I was thinking of but.... I'm thinking I won't be able to check to see if VPN is enabled and then turn on wifi because the vpn requires wifi access to connect.
I'm still new to Android but so far the only tool I see to block wifi access is Airplane Mode and I think it blocks all apps (including the vpn). Maybe pdroid or Droidwall have some options for what I want to do????
Got to thinking if Droidwall had profiles I could build a profile that had wifi blocked for everything except Vpn. Then use Tasker to check to see if vpn was up. If not then set Droidwall to that profile. Problem is I don't think there is a way to run Tasker rule constantly. So there would be data leakage.

Credential Storage

I've searched around for an answer to this question, but I can't seem to find anything.
My office uses secured 802.1x wireless. When I try and connect, I get a message saying "You must set a lock screen PIN or password before you can use credential storage". Is there a way around this? I really don't want to set a PIN or password on my phone...
Set it, set up your connection, then change your lock back to None. It only needs the lock when it's initially creating the store. You can remove the screen lock once your credential store is set up.
Awesome. I figured it would be something simple.

Click to collapse
This didn't work for me, it asks me to create a code (pattern, pin or password) if I want to create, for example, a VPN connection.
Then, lockscreen requires my code to unlock, and it doesn't allow me to change lock back to none because, it says, it's protected under a credential storage.
If I clear my credential storage it clears my saved connections. This was not an issue on stock and on

How to permanente disable Hotspot/Thetering Wi-Fi on Android?

Hi! Even if I put a password to lock the settings and prevent access to the way to share the Internet via Wi-Fi, someone always gets the password from someone else who knows. I need to disable this function permanently. I have root access. These are company phones with Android 10 and 11.
