[Q] Wrong kernel flashed - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I have a brand new galaxy SII bought in Belgium. I wanted to root it but something went wrong. I used this guide:
http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-i9100-icsandroid-4-0/
Now I think I know what went wrong, the guide is only for a device already on ICS (i think) which was not the case. Trouble is that I do not know which kernel version was on the device before the flash and now he doesn't boot anymore. I just see the galaxy S2 logo with triangle and that's it.
Can you please help me? I'm sorry, I know I was really not careful enough...

If you can get into download mode, follow the guide here to root your phone & consider yourself lucky.
If you can't get into download or recovery mode, you're probably boned. Try a jig before you send it to a service center or have it JTAG repaired by a 3rd party.

Thank you for the very quick answer I can get to the download mode without a problem so I think its repairable. Also thank you for the link, problem is that I do not know which version of the insecure kernel i need since the phone doen't boot anymore and I can't see the about phone page... Any tips on that? Or will it be a trial and error game to see with which kernel the phone boots?
Thank you very much for your help!

OK. Being able to get into download mode is good. Now, finding the kernel that came with the phone...
I probably wouldn't go down the trial & error route, have a look at this thread . Don't worry about the links, what you need to do is find the matching kernel for your carrier & country. Then you can look for the matching insecure kernel in the CFRoot thread I linked you to in the previous post.
Edit to add - Linked to wrong thread in first instance, OP, make sure the link you click on takes you to 'Official I9100 Carrier Branded Firmwares'.

Thank you very much. You really are a great help I will try it tommorow morning when I have a bit more time (I don't want to screw it up again ).

No probs ;-) If you have any dramas, post in this thread again. Important thing is to make sure you find the right kernel in that carrier branded firmware thread in the 2nd post, then in the CFRoot kernel thread find the closest match.
For example, if your original kernel is --KF2, you would try and find a matching CFRoot kernel. If there is a KF2 CFRoot kernel, good. You use that. But, if there wasn't a KF2 CFRoot kernel but there was a KF1 or KF3, you could use either of those. Again, this is just an example but should give you an idea of what to look for.

I just booted succesfully. No data lost, everything just fine I did exactly what you said and it worked like a charm. I cannot thank you enough Just wanted to let you know

Really ? Got the phone rooted & all working well ? Very good No probs, glad it worked out well for you/no data loss & most importantly no borked phone

Yep all working fine now. I even put ressurection ics on it without a single problem very glad you were so helpful!

It was so unfortunate that I'm now in this position, a stuck galaxy s 2 logo with triangle on it.
Earlier today, I rooted an SGS2 of my friend on 2.3.4 using XW_NEE_KI4-42: 2.3.4, CF-Root v4.2, SU 3.0, "insecure" to correspond with the 'KI4' code. After that I flashed it with CM9 and all went well.
Seeing the success, another friend wanted me to do the same to his device. I gladly picked up the phone (which was using an official ICS ROM) and simply rooted it using the same file as above via Odin. That is the part where I did wrong. So this phone won't boot and now I have no idea what the 'code' was. Still, odin mode is accessible.
So, where do I go from here?
Should I make new thread for this? Or is the solution provided here is applicable?
The sgs2 was unbranded aka international version.
Thanks in advance.

Flash a stock rom via Odin. That will give you a 'clean slate'. Search Intratech's firmware thread, if the links don't work search Samfirmware.com for the stock firmware you need.
Alternatively, you can get the latest firmware for the phone model/carrier/country with the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google). The firmware package you download can be flashed in Odin following the instructions in Intratech's thread.

you were the one who solved OP problems n now here you are again to help me out. Seriously, thanks.. I'll definitely will give it a try soon when i got back n I'll report back.
Thanks man.

I seem to be following you around lol not on purpose
I'd wouldn't flash a stock rom "straight off the bat" .. Only I would do that as a last resort!
Flashing the correct kernel will make the phone boot up with NO LOSS of data and all will be back to normal
Flashing a stock ROM will mean you have to start all over again.. (like we do anyway when we flash different custom roms)
So I'm not saying your wrong, just saying try a different kernel first!

Thanks Eudemony, I'll try kernel first. So it seems like there are 2 LPBs and 2 LPQs and all of them about 17 different kernels for ICS. Alright, I'll try LPQ first. But, is it okay to keep on flashing/Odin-ing each and every single of it? Any bad consequences of that? Or side effects? hehe, sounded like i'm trying out new drugs.

If it is the wrong kernel .. you know the result as you have just done that..
and thats what you are trying to fix
If its the right kernel .. everything should "magically" load back up

Seems like you're 'downgrade' your friend's S2... If AP unit then take a look at your friend's S2 box any IMEI or Warranty Card which can identified the phone origin region.. My phone AP unit no problem flashing latest open europe firmware from samfirmware website... Already rooted and no annoying yellow triangle... flash counter zero... thanks triangle away.. In your case once your friend's phone region is identified then download accordingly.. flash the correct firmware via odin... deal with triangle later.. most important ensure your friend's phone working and please avoid softbrick..

IMEI will identify aprox build date and area of release .

Seriously? I didnt know that. Actually, before upgrading his phone (lets call him Z), Y asked me to flash CM9 but then since his phone wasn't yet rooted with 2.3.4 on top, I decided to update using kies to see whats it like to have an official ics (youtube isnt enough, hehe) but to no avail. Kies told me the phones having the latest firmware even though I've updated kies to latest version.. hmmm..

I have installed an unsecure kernel in my galaxy s2 (GT I9100G) but since I cannot find the original stock kernel, I wanted to roll back to the stock android version that came with s2 and thus wanted to know how could I re-install the firmware from KIES.
Thanks

You need to reflash stock using ODIN before you can use kies, as Kies doesn't recognise custom kernels.

Will reflashing bring back the stock kernel and make the phone unrooted in short make it the way Samsung sold it to me?
Also, I am using Galaxy S2 I9100G build number GINGERBREAD.XWKJ2 and for it only 1 unsecured kernel was available at this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327509
I rooted my phone without any problem but since there's no way to get back the stock kernel, I am afraid that if need be, how am I gonna claim warranty for my device.

Yes aslong as you flash the firmware that came with it t will be like as samsung sold it. Have a look at intratech's thread he may just have the kernel if you still have the original firmware on it already.

Yes, I do have the original firmware on it. Didn't have enough guts to play with custom ROM :/
I did check intratech's thread and found stock kernel for XWKJ2 but the thread titles says "Official i9100 Firmwares" whereas my phone shows i9100G. I guess this won't work.
And, when flashing to original firmware, will the kernel's be replaced to the original one's as well?
Thanks for suck quick replies Am just a n00b diving into Android
You can extract the original kernel yourself if you want it http://www.hotfile.com/dl/136857418/c144909/I9100GXWKJ2_I9100GODDKJ2_INU.zip.html

BTW, is there a way to get the latest available firmware in my country/region via KIES so that I can be 100% sure of being in right place
i cant post the link right now but you can google

Few Suggestions/Questions

Hello,
I've got S2 with Cognizant and Speedmod S2 Kernel. Everything works fine. I'll try to put it as "ordered" as possible.
Few doubts,
1) I'm a Rom Junkie(I came over from x10) and I don't have warranty, I see a lot of people got IMEI changed and even though they backed up "efs" partition, Nothing fixed (It's a hassle to take it to service center). Is there a proper way to safeguard "efs" partition (which contains IMEI) as per what i see on other thread.
2) I'm on a custom rom, How do I get back to official rom using KIES? Do I have to flash an official kernel or get back to official rom+kernel? How does this KIES thing work? I'm from India wondering if there is 2.3.5 update?
3) Why don't we have vodoo kernel just like GS-1? They were awesome.
4) if I flash the latest 2.3.5 will I loose the functionality to remove "yellow" triangle? Do I have to backup the bootloader or update the bootloader? Any clear info on this?
Thanks for all your help and responses, it would be appreciated.

My apologies buddy. If i knew the answers to your other two questions i would of answered in the order you wanted. apologies and i hope you get the info you want...
I dont have all the answers but ill tell you what i know
#1-Yes its a good idea to back-up your efs file. Not hard to do really.
The easiest ways would be:Full nandroid back-up,CWM(although conflicting reports of efs back-up in folders),copying efs folder to /data in phone and not internal-sd with root explorer(apparently internal sd looses permissions when copying). There is Hellcats KTool and apps like Nutrilaty also. Those to me being the easiest
#2-Kies needs to be installed to flash via odin as installing kies installs the drivers.Kies wont bring back a stock firmware, only Odin can do that and kies wont recognize your phone with a none official firmware. It can be used with an official firmware and a root kernel without problems though. If you have an official firmware in your phone and you plug it in to kies and there is a 2.3.5 update it will automatically advise you.
#3-that one i dont know.Sorry
#4-If you flash to 2.3.5 officialy or from another site you will be stuck with the yellow triangle as far as i am aware as it contains the new bootloader and can not be re-set with the jig.You can flash it here on XDA from this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
which contains the old bootloader. Its 2.3.5 XXK13 and lets you re-set the counter and get rid of the triangle.

OMG! Have i bricked my BRANDNEW phone?

Hi guys,
I got my orange samsung galaxy s2 less than a week. Yesterday after rooting, flashing villianrom, i like an idiot, installed Clearglass 1.6 Theme zip via CWM. After rebooting, the phone has now gone into a boot loop. But since i had a nandroid backup (NOT A ZIP FILE!), i thought i'll simply restore...but i can't! The sdcard won't mount. So then i found THIS THREAD.
After following the instructions, i still can't mount the SD Card, yet it's fine in windows 7.
I also thought i'd try to use the ODIN method to reflash my stock fw, but i can't find the correct kernel version . FYI, i'm from uk and the details of my phone are below:-
MODEL: GT-I9100P
ANDROID VERSION: 2.3.4
BASEBAND VERSION: I9100PBVKI2
KERNEL: [email protected] #2
BUILD NO: GINGERBREAD.BVKI3
PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME! I can't be without my phone
Not sure what you are asking .
Firmware is not kernel whatever your correct firmware is that includes the kernel .
You have a 1900P whatever the P is .
Find the firmware not the kernel here .
Stock Roms .and csc

Alternative
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Still problems use usb jig to set rom counter to zero .
Return to service centre .

Many thanks for showing me the correct version. I wasn't too sure as i didn't want to mess up the phone permanently. So i simply follow the ODIN boot loop guide?
The way it looks to me is that CWM/Phone is corrupted as i've tried everything - mount/format/unmount/re-mount sd, but it won't detect.
OH BTW! Can you please clarify something for me. I thought that since my orange stock rom said "KI3", i must always get a "KI3"....have i got that wrong? if so how can a KI4 work on a KI3 and why is it not necessary to stick with KI3?
Hey there wowandroid, the KI* is, in my humble opinion just a revision number, higher could mean better reliability in terms of signal and perhaps even battery drain
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
thanks AJ. It's just that my i9100 is P model (i9100P) and has NFC capabilities. I've managed to flash the phone back with the ki4 rom, so big thank you to JJEgan. I just thought that because i have a p model, i might end up removing features once i flash with a ki4.
Anyway, now that i've got it working, can i go ahead and use odin to flash villianrom/checkrom back again?

checkrom is compactable with every Theme out there if its built for the latest XWKK5 version which checkrom is on!
So first
1)Install ROM
2)Use there Kitchen Download only any one of the themes, and hit apply and then install (Obviously)
OR
You can Download manually from the Forums any theme or any thing for stock XWKK5
3)After a theme install u will reboot.
4)Then use there Kitchen to flash any mods etc u want
Personally i use this via Kitchen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310527

1. What kernel do you recommend? I need a kernel which gives it the longest battery life if possible.
2. What theme do you recommend? I need a theme which is good eyecandy, but isn't too bloated. Something like this for the villianrom:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229723
3. Is there a rom posted that has already been customised and tweaked with popular kernels/themes? Saves me messing around.

[Q] Looking for CF-Root for LP5 firmware

I have a Telecom NZ SG S2 phone, and yesterday Kies told me there was a new version available and I allowed it to update me to ICS. I was CF-Rooted on my old version, but now I can not find a CF-Root file matching my new LP5 kernel. This is what "About phone" reports:
Model number
GT-I9100T
Android version
4.0.3
Baseband version
I9100TDOLP4
Kernel version
3.0.15-I9100TDOLP5-CL345054
[email protected] #3
Build number
IML74K.DOLP5
Is there a file that matches this kernel? Or is it a new one?
There isn't an exact match. Which leaves you with two options:-
A) As per the CFRoot thread "Help ! Which file do I use" - "If there's no match and I'm not making one, try finding the closest match."
B) Extract the kernel zImage from the stock rom, send it to Chainfire & ask him nicely to make a CFRoot kernel. Whether he will or not, who knows.

Thanks for that. I am trying both routes at the moment.
For A), there is a CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LP6-v5.2-CWM5.zip file win an LP6 kernel that looks to be the closest. I can try that.
For B), I have found FUS, downloaded the stock I9100TDOLP5_I9100TTNZLP3_I9100TDOLP4_HOME.tar.md5 file and extracted the zImage file from it. I think, though, that posting it and attracting Chainfire's attention will need to wait a bit as I am a complete noobie here and can not post on the developer forums yet. Is posting to the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14283342 thread the correct way to go about that?

hey u can try the lps one below which works with LP4
http://download.chainfire.eu/157/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPS-v5.4-CWM5.zip
That seems to be the closest match, so yeah, you can use that kernel.
Good job downloading the rom with Checkfus (keep that on your PC in case you ever need to go back to stock for whatever reason). A lot of people wouldn't show that kind of initiative Yeah, post it to the thread, or I guess you might be able to attach it to a PM (not sure if it will fit into the attachment size limit or not).
Just be patient & I'm sure he'll get around to making the exact match sooner or later, but you'll have already rooted your phone with the LP6 kernel and using it or an exact match isn't going to make any difference really at the end of the day.

Thanks, this kernel worked for me. Or at least it is so far - I have not tested too much yet, but all seems normal.
I did try the LP6 one also, but that did not boot properly. I suspect I need CF-Root 5.4 for ICS, and that one was only 5.2.

how do i get it to a .tar file?
[Update] Got It!!
LPS kernel ok?
fe31nz - I am keen to root my phone and wanted to know how you were getting on with using LPS kernel? Everything working alright? I have a Telecom branded phone but am using 2 Degrees, it's working fine, but I want to root it to remove the stupid Y! Tworld browser and get the default browser, plus obviously try some other goodies that require root.
From what I have garnered reading the forums, the CF-Root shouldn't affect the modem etc, but does that mean it also doesn't change the frequencies the phone uses? I see this model probably has the ability to use 5 bands WCDMA, but the firmware sets which are enabled, I just don't want to screw up my 3G.

Also, just wondering how you figure out which is the closest match? What are you basing your decision for LPS on?
I have had exactly 0 problems with my LPS kernel. I tried it because it was recommended and it had CF-Root 5.4. I already knew I could recover back to the stock kernel if necessary as I had already done that, using the ROM downloaded via checkfus, when the LP6 kernel did not work. So I was happy to try any suggestion.

Cool, thanks for that, I will give it a go. Got the stock firmware, kernel etc just in case. I think I will do some benchmarks first for 3G speeds and then compare, to be sure I haven't made any reduction in quality and speed before testing with the LPS kernel.
Cheers.
I put the lps on my ICS sgs2 and have had no probs either
Sent from my GT-I9100T using XDA
Rooted my phone thanks to you guys!
Just need to replace the retarded Y! Tworld browser with the real ICS browser. I have tried to do this using ES File Explorer and a modded ICS browser found here on XDA, but I can't get it to work either by trying to install it, or copying it to system\apps.
Anyone else done this?
I eventually used checkfus to download the official Vodafone ROM which has the proper Android browser, was happy to see my bookmarks come down with google sync. I can't believe Telecom have put out a ROM with a broken browser that prevents users from syncing their bookmarks with their google account like any normal Android user would expect. Very poor form Telecom!
Gingerbread rom??
Here is my next issue for you guys (posting here so the kiwis see it)
on gingerbread when my facebook contacts synced it also synced with other apps like viber etc
i think it was the samsung facebook sync that did it but the ics version only syncs messages. Does anyone know how to get around this or does someone have the origonal telecom gingerbread rom so i can flash back.
Cheers guys

[Q] phone has crashed after rooting XXLPH

got new s2 a few days ago which came ics 4.0.3 installed. noticed a few glitches so wanted to update to 4.04 (XXLPH) ive done this before on my previous phone so felt quite confident. it went thru the process and odin indicated i had succeeded. it was then that the phone wouldnt go any further than the spash screen (with the yellow exclamation mark). the screen then just goes blank. i can get into CWM mode and download mode.
can anyone give me any pointers please? really stuck here.
thanks
Your thread title and post content don't match. Did it happen after rooting or flashing LPH? After re-reading your post I would assume you have a non-stock kernel on there since you have the yellow exclamation mark. To get it to boot again, just flash your stock kernel, one of the newer CF-root kernels (I know this might seem odd, but it's worth a try), or one of the custom ICS kernels.
Why did you choose LPH anyway when there are newer? My suggestion would be to try a newer one.
Also, LPH is 4.0.3. Not 4.0.4.
One more thing; check your model number on the label under the battery. You're only got 1 post, and your profile is blank, so it's impossible to tell if you are maybe in the wrong device forum.
sorry for the confusion
sorry my terminologies arent spot on - i followed the instructions on a page on the android soul forum (sorry XDA wont let me post the link) which roots the phone and flashes the update at the same time.
i am definitely on an S2 (GTI9100).
should i just go back to odin now and install a new build? any recommendations for 4.0.4.
thanks again for your help.

There are no odin packages for 4.0.4. Samsung hasn't released a 4.0.4 package yet. They are currently up to DXLP9, which is still 4.0.3.

Have to be sure... because there are over a dozen different model numbers for what Samsung markets as "Galaxy SII". GT-I9100 is just one of them.
links
folks, ive searched xda for dxlp9 and get a million links. is there a link i should use being in the uk? also do i have to use odin for this or can i install the zip from an sd card? sorry for being a pain.

again, apologies for the confusion. my phone is rooted using cf root. and its released by chainfire. i cant show u the link as its from another forum and xda wont let me post it. heres the opening paragraph which will hopefullly explain things better than i can.
It seems Chainfire never sleeps. No sooner than a new Samsung firmware comes out, he comes up with a new CF-Root kernel update for that firmware, pre-rooted and with clockworkmod recovery (CWM) installed. Well, he did it again. CF-Root is out for XXLPH, the latest Ice Cream Sandwich firmware leak for the Galaxy S2 i9100. And of course, we’ve got a guide right here to help you flash it and get root access.
now ive just put dxlp9 on my sd card - gone into cwm mode and installed it successfully. unfortunately the phone still goes off after showing the splash screen.
can anyone please in simple terms point me towards an update and whether i need to use odin or use zio from sd card in cwm.
thanks

ive reflashed the stock kernel - i now get the spash screen (minus exclamation mark) but it stays on the splash screen.
i cant helpthinking that this has happended because i have overwritted the official ROM with an unofficial one - i never had these problems at all when i upgraged to ics on my previous phone.

At no point did you mention ever doing a full wipe... Have you tried that?
