Getting a vibrant soon... its a huge downgrade from my epic touch :/
I have a few... well a lot of questions.. xD
Will my batteries from my old epic 4g and epic 4g touch work in the vibrant?
What's a great case for the vibrant?
What version of android is the official ota update for the vibrant?
What are the best roms and kernels?
What's the 4.0 progress.. any good 4.0 roms?
Benchmark scores?
How to root?
What data speeds do you normally get?

The batteries should work i think.. at least one of them.
My case is great but i cant really name it.. its a hard rubber that doesnt creak or break off but also isnt sticky like the silicon ones... you can look for a gradiant pink to black case idk...
Theres no OTA for vibrant but we have kies update of us to jk6 i believe and its froyo.. i do NOT recommend using kies as it has a notorious rep of bricking vibrants.
Best roms? For froyo (functional tho a bit slow) bionix was always my absolute fave..
Gb: cm7 was amazingly fast and stable tho the batt life isnt great. Glitch kernel ftw
Ics: ics euphoria is qiite amazing tho i just found out about pretty dire bug regarding bricking through random failed encryption.. so id hold off possibly till its fixed.
Vibrant passion is one of the most stable ics available for any phone.. its very good imo with no major issues other than that encryption thingy and a few freezes in some apps (could be their own fault) etc
I used to bench 1600 quadrant on bionix oced at 1.4, 3000 on cm7 on glitch oced to 1.6 lol, again around 1600 on ics oced to 1.2 ... linpack ranges from 16 - like 25 or so.
How to root? Read the noob guide sticky... seriously... dont skip this... do it..
Data speeds for me always sucked but i dont run benchmarks on it...ost people say they get up to around 7.5 mbps after the build.prop tweaks. You might be around there.
You might or migght not be interested in the ffc mod if you want a front facing cam, and the unbrickable mod if you like delicate techy work (very useful)..
Also learn to use odin well.
And dont be pissed you got a vibrant, its a great phone with an amazing community

I know 2.2 is a different story but I'm curious as to peoples opinions with jit on 2.1 roms since 2.2 is still a little buggy imho.
Well I am running nonsense with jit from froyo (frozen eclair) and netarchy's kernel. I get linpack scores of 19-20, 750 quadrant, and 51 fps. Take that for what its worth. I was getting higher linpack/quadrant scores with CM6, but I am unwilling to sacrifice ALL of my evo's features, namely MMS, consistant cameras, 4G, and qik. Some of these features work for some folks, but not others. You keep all of your evo specific features with a 2.1 rom...

No, it's not worth it on the Eris it's too unstable. I have a topic about this.
i agree. it's not stable at all. when i first used it, it was working great but over time it started making my phone laggy and just a bunch of problems.
What's up, guys? I'm thinking about trading my SGS4G for this model (the Vibrant), just for the sake of saving $10/month on my T-Mobile bill (the 4G phones only give you 200mb or 5gb options, whereas the 3G phones give you a middle-of-the-road 2GB option for cheaper). NOT TO MENTION the fact that the Vibrant has access to amazing ROMs like CM7 and MIUI.
All that aside, I was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers...
1) Is this a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad idea?
2) Are 3G speeds pretty decent? Am I going to miss 4G?
3) What DOESN'T work when it comes to MIUI and CM7? GPS?
4) What's your favorite custom ROM / mod on this phone?
5) Any other tips?
I'm used to using CWM and Odin and Heimdall, so I don't think it will be much of a transition. And as far as I can tell, the 3G and 4G models have almost everything in common (minus the data speeds, Bluetooth EDR, and perhaps battery life).
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, hope I posted in the right section.
Cheers!
CM7/Miui is fully functional, aside from gps..it works, but barely and needs a restart if you want to use it again. All these custom roms you want, however are not capable of making 911 calls,so some devs are dropping them anyways.
I don't think you'll notice a bit of difference between 3g and 4g (as far as the GSG4g anyways, seeing as it's not capable of HSPA+)
If your phone works for you, keep it...otherwise sacrifice gps quality and no 911 in an emergency. Hope this helps
Thanks! That's very helpful. I am running GB on my SGS4G, but honestly there are very few noticeable differences b/twn GB and Froyo (nothing I will miss at least) so I'm not terribly worried about that.
I've always loved MIUI, and it's quite crippled on the SGS4G. As far as MIUI goes (not CM7), is it crippled in any way? I'm not worried about E911, but I am a bit worried about GPS.
I have been running VeNom's ROM and it is by far the best one I have ran on any device

No. But there is a way you can modify your phone to have one. But it will involve breaking your warranty (if you have warranty).

i dont care about benchmark score i meant overall speed
Not a good thread and I mean no offense. Gb vs hc is a bit of a debate on these forums. This will only result in another thread where people bicker. I am guilty of this myself.
My suggestion is try it, and if you don't like it revert back

Speed is OK. I guess faster than HC, but that is how you look at it.
I'm liking HC better. Im running clever names HC, seems stable and have not had any issues with it yet. I find it slightly faster then then stock GB. I was running Vipers GB over locked to 1800 and I'm not missing it. My current phone is an Epic 4G touch and everything is slow and laggy compared to it.
Sure there's a few things that bug me about the HC UI but no more then in ICS. But then I didn't like GB or Froyo and went back to Donut when I had my Vogue. Things change and you can either whine and complain, get use to it or learn to code.
I'm enjoying the upgrade and won't be going back.

Im currently using CM9 latest nightly, but as much as I love AOSP, I never feels as smooth as samsung based roms. Why is that? Kernel? Drivers? Optimizations?
If its kernel, which is (Opinion based) the smoothest available?
thnx

Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
ATM cm9 roms have a bit touch issue, so it feels like its not smooth
But when their wasn't any touch issue then people said its much smoother than stock
once you taste aosp ics you never go back
just wait till it hit stable and samsung rom wont even come close
^^^ Thats how I feel. But im kinda picky, thats why I brought it up. I noticed the touch issue and its part of the issue IMO. But can Exynos drivers/optimizations also be contributing? because stock ICS roms get much better framerate in the GPU tests than CM9 (never mind the overall score) So maybe the CPU isnt being used to its full potential
I flashed a buddys Vibrant with Passion ICS and also noticed that a single core 512mb ram last gen phone felt smoother than my exynos monster. Same goes to the Vivid when i tried one at the ATT store that had the ICS update. When i flipped the homescreen carrusell in Sense, it was like when I first saw a motionflow 120hz TV
Hope things get sorted out because I love AOSP and would never want to go back to the cartoony TW

most of the fixes like video recording were done in hurry ,noobes flaming etc
now the devs are working on cleaning and optimizing the code now
http://codeworkx.de/wordpress/2012/03/30/cm9-status-for-galaxy-s-ii/
You can try with another ROM, I'm currently in Thebyani 3.7 it uses Siyah v3.0rc1 kernel and Vertumus Theme.
Its really smooth and fast and the look it's very AOSP, no TW bloat.
Truly is ICS better than Gingerbread in real life [on the EVO 3D]? I find myself flashing multiple ICS roms hoping to gain the smoothness of GB but I just can't find it.
I know the features ICS brings are great:
- Chrome support
- Better sleep management
- Better system/data management (cant confirm this)
- 32 bit color by default (cant confirm this)
But one thing GB has that ICS doesn't is complete capability with our phones. We were able to make GB fly and I feel since Sprint is dragging their feet to release the update, we will have some time before ICS flies like GB. By then Jelly Bean will be running. It's a vicious cycle.
I am all for trying out new software, I love being on the bleeding edge of technology. However, for example, when playing Max Payne on ICS, the joystick would stop responding or the framerate will drop dramatically. That never happened on GB.
So my question is, whats your reason for running ICS on your EVO 3D? It is because its the latest and greatest or is there a certain feature I am missing? Because I am starting not to see a benefit.
**Disclamer: I read a couple of threads related to this but this subject was never expanded on. Mods feel free to close if you think this is redundant.**
I run it because I'm yet to have 1 problem that's not a known ics general issue.

For cdma phones yes, the 2.17 base was an excelent base for GB roms. Us poor GSM users had a crap base which when even overclocked was probably still slower than the current ICS.. for example low 2000 quadrants and 24fps nenamark
I just wish there was a way to use the 2.17 base roms on GSM, I would certainly use it. :good:
ICS runs fine on my phone. And I'm easily getting at least 24 hours per battery, as opposed to 12 hours with GB.
ICS definitely has better battery management. However, for me personally, I don't mind having less battery with more performance since I have multiple batteries I can just swap out. A perfect balance is what I look to achieve. ICS beats GB in terms of battery life but I have to give the best performance title to GB.
Wait until HTC release the kernel sources and we get custom overclocked kernels, will speed it up a little

There hasn't been an official ICS release? (For CDMA at least). Generally its been a 90 day or so time frame for source release. We should see GSM source in the next couple of months. While HTC isn't the fastest at releasing they haven't ever failed to release source that I'm aware of.

Disagree with this post 100%.
Even though im running a GSM version, i can tell you right now that the phone is 100% different then the GB version. Its faster, smoother, and runs far more efficient. (ive only got 200 mb used of ram, when my GB version was running around 400-450, and i still have to remove junk from my ICS version once i root it.)

Again this is for the GSM version, it may not be true for CDMA phones as i doubt you have one to compare...
I myself believe the fact that their phones run worse on ICS then ours because the same thing was happening to us on GB...
I think for me gb gave me problems with youtube....always skipping in the middle. But going to ics has fixed that. Everything is smoother. Battery life to me isn't much of a problem since I have about two extra batteries.

ICS runs way better than GB did. side by side comparisons of Eternity 1.4.2 vs inbREDed 5.2 verify that for me in an instant.
apps load faster, menus react quicker, etc. I'll never go back to GB and can't wait for an Anthrax kernel for this.
I do wish that the Sense 4 ROM's had 3D and 4G though, because those things run really, really nice.. *sigh*
Interesting feedback, thank you everyone. This is definitely "food for thought".
Whats your feedback on game performance? I usually find myself playing one of the Rockstar or Gameloft games I have purchased and I feel ICS framerates drops much more than GBs.
I feel that since GB's kernel source has been released, devs were able to tweak it for maximum performance under heavy load vs a stock kernel which would be somewhat conservative on performance.
And yes I do have a CDMA version but input from GSM users are welcomed.
Hate to be the one to say it but the second our devices are graced with JB performance and battery life will not just reach the best balance yet, but take both to new levels.
Were in developmental limbo right now, and shortly enough new JB roms will start pumping out, keeping users happy for quite a while

Not everyone will jump on JB. I know I won't. I have good 4G coverage and want to keep that, especially since my speeds have been going up. and I want to keep 3D. So if those aren't present I'm staying on ICS
I really wish we had a stable build of CM7 for CDMA to play with, htc holding the source on ICS kernels has made the ICS dev basically come to a crawl and it saddens me lol... My old Evo4G had a new ROM out everyday it seemed and IMO CM9 was more stable there than on the 3D. Nothing against the wonderful devs here as it's not their fault htc is being stingy with source.

I don't actually have an evo, but I've been using an HTC hd2 for a long time, until yesterday.
I was running the latest ics version mostly just to be on the bleeding edge of technology. Their were a few things I really liked more and reasons I wanted to run it because of, but mostly i wanted ics because it was new.
We also had gingerbread roms that were blazing fast and worked almost perfectly. In all honesty they were amazing.
Then ics came along. Many of the drivers were not there for our device and the devs start working like crazy to fix them or write them, just whatever needed to be done.
However even to this day ics does not run as well as gb did. It is very stable, not a lot of fc's but it still has some. In reality its just not yet the same quality gb was.
I think that until HTC releases the kernal source like for the evo and other phones that ics will not run as good as gb. In no way is this in offense to the devs. I just know that its hard to match a companies time and man power when your doing something for free.
In short, unless their is a lot of official support I do not think ics runs as well as gb either.
