I was just wondering if I should change from WCDMA to GSM (Only) or something else when I go to that menu when you dial *#*#4636#*#*
Does one offer better battery life? I see that I'm on WCDMA now. I'm not in a LTE location by the way.
Thanks.
Yes switch it to wcdma it will save you battery because your phone will no longer be searching for lte all the time. And also switching to GSM will save you even more

Changing that option does NOT work on the Note.

So I installed cyanogentazz v8 the other day. I decided to check and make sure my phone was using the right radio band so I did the following:
Dialed *#*#4636#*#* > phone info and radio was set to wcdma. So I switched to cdma auto prl and then menu > select radio band. It forced close as it should. I turned the screen off for while, then I check again and it was set to gsm. I had not restarted the phone it anything like that. I switched back to cdma auto prl and turned the screen off again. A few minutes later it was set to wcdma.
Now my question is could the app toggle 2g be doing this? That's really the only thing I can of that would change the radio band. Any insight would be great.

I just changed the band and hit the back button and rebooted. I didn't do Menu > Change Radio Band. When I dialed back into the settings, it was still at prl cdma auto.
Not sure what wcdma is.. anyone know?
Checked again and it went back to wcdma. Something is changing my radio band...

Yes, Toggle 2G will reset the network type. However, new in version 0.0.8 I added an option to pick which network type to use for 2G and 3G modes. Just open the settings and set 3G to cdma auto prl

Thank you for your answer. And thank you for creating this awesome app. Saves me loads of battery without the hassle of turning data off manually every time I turn my screen off!!

I'm on CELB Froyo 2.1 and since changing my radio band from wcdma preferred (default on rom) to cdma auto (prl)(default on stock), my battery life has been crap!
Can someone explain this?
Thanks.
I don't get good 3G at my house and when I'm on edge in get almost full bars. How can I shut off 3G/4g? I did the 4636 thing and selected gsm only but I still see h+. What am I doing wrong ? Is there another way? App?
When change it I just back out by the back button...is there a diffremt way I should do it to save the gsm settings only?
Thanks

Ok .. sigh... first off... the "bars" you are referring to indicates cell strength(voice calls/SMS) not data speed or strength. I think the atrix shows h+ no matter what as on my nexus it would change to H when using hsdpa and 3g for when on 3g and likewise for edge and even g **edit that's a cyanogen mod**. NOW as for switching to 2g only and disabling 3g it is ( settings> wireless & networks> mobile networks> select network = your choice) no need for *#*#4636#*#*
On another note if your getting slowdown on 3g try a restart... 2g is not going to be any faster.

Besides going through the different setting menus, there are widgets available in the market that will act as a shortcut to the last (or semi-last) preference. I have it configured in Extended Controls

i went to the settings, and mobile networks is greyed out? how can i get into that menu?

no matter how many times i go into the 4636 screen and select GSM ONLY it goes right back to GSM/WCDMA
and i am so sick of looking service when it switches over from EDGE to 3g for ONE bar. what am i doing wrong? why cant i get it to STAY on EDGE>..this no service thing is making me wonder if i want to return this phone..

I forgot that I had to unlock my phone for it to work (canada, go figure) maybe thats why mine isn't greyed out.

After selecting 2g only mode, my Atrix still gets 4g speeds...
I am running the same phone under AT&T with 4.5.141. I rooted the phone and enabled the greyed out preference pane to select 2g only. Regardless of if I select 2g only there, and if I use the *#*#4636#*#* code, I can run speedtest and get 4g speeds .... Do I just need to go the cyanogen mod? Are there other preference panes that I need to edit? I am jealous of all of you out there who have successfully whipped their Atrix 4g!

Hi
I just got Galaxy S2 att but I am in Europe, and since I don't use phone only for calls & sms I wonder if there is an option to permanently set phone to use GSM only?
I know the trick with ...4636... menu, where I can set to use gsm, but when I restart my phone it goes back to umts again.
Is there some hack to open that menu in "mobile networks" or should I use international rom?
I'd find what db it edits when you do that then make init.d script to make that edit every time you boot.

can you explain me how to do it?

The phone should technically revert to edge. You see the phone by default is set to 3g prefered meaning in these situations in which roaming in another country and the frequency bands do not match or cannot find 3g in the area that in which your phone uses "att". It would in this case revert to a lower spectrum until it finds one your phone uses. So in this case it should be automatically reverting to edge when you hopped off the plane, boat, canoe, whatever.

I have 3g signal but it's love, and i have seen posts that 3g uses more battery, so since i don't use data i want be able to force phone to use gsm only.
I have tried *#*#4636#*#* but it won't switch to gsm, stays at 3g.
I got the same problem, dude. Still find no way...Using UNNAMED 2.2.1...
You can check you wireless setting menu--> Mobile network to see if there is an option for you to choos Use 2G only.

unfortunately there is no option to choose 2g because that menu option is gray, i can't even open it.
i am also using unnamed 2.2.1
Try *#2263# and in menu choose gsm only, then it will use only gsm network. Bu again, when you restart the phone it goes back to umts

Im in a good 4g area and it randomly switches to 3G. Is there a way to make it stay?
You may not be in as good an area as you think. The signal strength meter is actually for 3g, even when using 4g.
Open the dialed and use *#*#4636#*#* and you can set to LTE only instead of LTE+CDMA auto + EvDo (can't remember exactly how it's worded.
You want to use the dropdown preferred network setting. Remember after switching, give it about 30 seconds to make the swap between changes.
That's a very handy dialer string everyone should know from memory.
If you want to disable the 4G radio so it's not searching for a signal if it doesn't exist in your area, go down to the preferred network and choose cdma auto prl.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
There is a program in that market that will take you to the same place as that dialer string.
LTE ONOFF
I could never remember the string, and since I was going to need to switch to GSM networks in Europe I just used this. It works well. And the LTE only option is labeled is just LTE Only
Was just curious about network settings. Under the hidden menu my prefered network is set to wcdma prefered. Is this the best setting to use? This will still allow lte network correct? Thats what mine is set to default and if I try to change it it goes back to wcdma automatically. If im thinking correctly wont this automatically pick the fastest network available to me? Including lte? I camebto this conclusion because I do get the 4g symbol when Im in the signal area for lte. Also what kind of speeds is everyone getting with LTE? THANKS for the help! Just want to check and make sure this setting isn't preventing me from getting lte speeds.
The menu setting that you see is to only use one of the the technology's and the bands those the technology's uses to connect to the network (e.g. gsm, wcdma)
BTW. None of the l9s have LTE the l9 2 might
