So i was playing Rage of Bahamut, and i think my phone had enough.
The game locked up my entire phone at least 30 times in the past 2 days.
The last one had my phone in "safe mode" and upon reboot all my settings widgets folders and etc are gone
So what happened? What can i do? Why is this game so fubar for my phone

It would be difficult to say without knowing how your phone is configured. I've been playing for about a week and have had no problems.
One thing I've noticed is that the phone will get quite hot if I play while connected to AC while playing. But I guess that's to be expected. I have SetCPU set to performance governor and 1200MHz when plugged into a power source. I also have AutomateIt set to turn the screen to full brightness when plugged in.
Could overheating be your problem? If you're sometimes playing while plugged in (to conserve battery, as I am) you might consider using USB instead of AC.
I have been also playing this game for about 2 weeks. No problems... Wait Okay, let me explain my scenario. When i was playing the game on AOKP I experienced the heating problem mentioned above and swapped roms as I thought it was the rom. I uninstalled the game and used AOKP fine for a bit then re installed it and the heating persisted. So I swapped roms to MIUI V4. The problem has been gone ever since <3
I I really don't think my phone is heating up that much.
I've had some games heat my phone to 113 fahrenheit - and sometimes during gaming and charging I'd reach 131 fahrenheit.
I use to use a profile in setCPU that would lower my CPU from 1.6 to 1.2 or something if the temperature got up about 45 degrees celsius but stopped using it because it made my games lag
I don't think my cpu goes above 105 degrees while playing Rage of Bahamut

Well, it was just a suggestion as to a possible cause. Not knowing how your phone is even set up makes it hard to hazard a guess. Like I said, I have had zero problems with this phone while running RoB.
I was looking at market reviews of the game, narrowed down to our device, and out of four pages of reviews there was only one mention of a GS2 locking up repeatedly.
What kernel are u using and are u trying to overclock? Because if yer running above the 1.2 ghz stock with no undervolting and doing it for long periods of time I mean....its gonna get hot as hell. But that's kinda expected. Almost guaranteed. And yer gonna experience problems if u continue to push it like that, only because of the amount of stress yer putting on the phone .

You seriously overclock your phone all the time?............... you're just asking for issues. I literally have no advice for you besides saying maybe underclock your phone. what do you possibly need to do that the phones stock clk freq can't handle!?

Would you like being sustained in 113 degrees Fahrenheit? Most likely not. Trust me, your phone doesn't like it either.

After how long does it get warm when you play games like NOVA 3 and such?
For me it does after like 10-20min which is somewhat short to me, but then again, I've never owned a proper flagship phone such as the s3 before.
My phone gets heated up to 47°c after 20mins of riptide.
What's the temperature your phone heats up to? I suggest you use badass battery monitor to check the temperature

Your phone does what? Are you overclocking or something? My S2 doesn't get to 47°C after 1h of NOVA 3 while still being overclocked(Both the CPU and GPU).And the S3 is supposed(And I think proven too) to produce less heat than the S2.
My S3 gets a bit warmer too. Think it will be fixed in subsequent rom releases. Same thing happened with my S2 when I had it; it went away eventually

My s3 barely produces any heat compared to my s2,that thing was burning the flesh in my hands... Maybe that's the reason nova 3 runs sluggish on my phone but not to anyone else?

Has stock roms ever fixed the heat issues through updates in the past (on other phones ofc), or do I have to root and flash a custom rom to decrease the heat?
My s3 also get very hot from both sides after playing 15 mins of shadowgun. I m using stock rom. And yea here temperature is 42C in pakistan lahore!!!

I can't find any details for the Exynos chip in the S3, but afaik most ARM devices have a Tmax (maximum CPU temperature) of 50-something (58?) degree Celsius.
So if it's already 42 outside, you can expect the system to be 52 as air-cooling is terribly inefficient, especially in hot dry air.
When you fire up some games it will thus go above it's threshold and automatically reduce it's performance to keep itself from being damaged due to overheating.
Hello!
I have some concerns about the heat of my phone. I've read some threads, but everybody has different opinions and readings.
Basically, with room temperature at around 27-28, during browsing (especially with lots of scrolling through images) the phone will heat up to 40-41C (even to 42 with some encouraging) within 5 minutes, so the bottom front and back are very hot.
During other use, like writing a few messages in Whatsapp, going though settings in programs, menus etc it will, slowly, but will go up to ~36-37C.
Is it normal, or should I prepare for war with the shop I bought it from?
are you rinning a custom rom/kernel or stock? if so which?
I've found that different roms heat up more than others.
I'm using anaraxia rom 10.3 build and have no heat problems and the battery life is amazing!

Using a stock rom. I'm not experienced enough to flash custom roms yet, and I would also prefer to not void the warranty, at least since I'm not yet certain that my phone is not damaged in some way
I'm not that bothered by the heat, my only concern is whether this behavior is normal or not, and whether I should start the whole warranty war sooner.
Well I wouldn't be bothered tbh.. I've had 42°c while heavy usage and charging. If your phone overheats and burns out send it in then.. No point doing it now unless your warranty is out soon?

41.5, but how much did you strain the device? Today in a room where the temp was +-30-31C, while browsing XDA (which seemed to strain the device a bit) I got up to 44...
Also checked the idle tempretures, it's usually the same as the room temp at the moment, so it's not that it's always hot, just when used.
R: [Q] Regarding heat
Its weird that it should heat up while doing normal stuff...im on international version and last time it heated up was while i was playing modern combat 4 online after 2 hourse while connected to charger....so maybe youve got prpblems if it heats up like that only by viewing messages. I watch videos and browse the internet everyday, it never heats up. Im using stock rom and syiah ketnel...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
While doing regular stuff like messages etc it doesn't heat up much. The first test was done while browsing, but I kept it at 40% load and 1400mhz, so it can't not heat up. I think that room temperature matters, I live in a hot area, today was 31C.

I've had that "problem" (well it's not really a problem, only a minor annoyance during warm seasons) with stock rom too.
Didn't have that much experience with other roms and kernels (I'm very picky with features) but I never noticed it on Siyah with Wanamlite.
Stock kernel is far too happy to ramp up clock speeds to slightly improve response time (or so is the theory... practice is not noticeable) so it will heat up your device. More heat of course also means higher battery drain .
Note that a protection around your device usually keeps you from noticing this fact (while the phone gets even warmer due to worse cooling)

I've also noticed this heat problem, I'm also on a stock rom.
Using the "CPU power saving" in the Power Saving setting has helped, so I figured it was the kernel ramping itself up.
It's not that noticeable to run at a lower cpu frequency except that some games are sometimes choppy now
The fact that stock rom likes to ramp up the clock speeds is correct. Just by simply fast scrolling back and forth through pages on forums etc makes it go up to 1400mhz and keep it at 40% load, that's why I get the higher temps.

You'd enjoy using the HTC One X then, normal use it easily reaches 42ºc, extended use and/or heavy use can see the phone reach 55ºc so for me, that's a welcome change.
I should be receiving the Z2 tomorrow anyway so I'll post my findings then.
I have noticed this also. I downloaded about 3gb of games and the top back of the phone got fairly hot

Water resistant coating will always trap more heat inside, maybe that's why Sony uses the slightly lower clocked SD801.

I think that would be a reasonable assumption.
I guess the only question is whether it's a deal breaker or not.
Does increased temperature effect battery life at all?
I noticed this happening recently but on rare occassions. It gets hot right where the camera is located but I'm not sure if it is related to the camera or some other app. I know that it overheats when recording 4K videos over 3 minutes. The quick fix when it heats up is to restart the device so to me it is definitelty software realted.
Mine gets warm, but not got enough to be a problem so far. I'm in the UK.

Coming from the Galaxy Note 2, when my phone got warm it indicated that there was a problem. Maybe since this is part of the design, with the waterproofing at all, I'll just have to learn to accept that the phone will get a little warm.
On the plus side, it'll be good for the winter, to warm up the hands

Most definitely.
Well i can asure you that all snapdragon 800 soc overheat and it depends on what you do,my curent device lg G2 when i bought it,it had jellybean on it whne browsing web listening to music etc it always got hot,but when plating games it was a very big overheating ,the procesor got up to 72`C ad baterry was on 42`C and i thought it was a problem with the phone but after updating to kitkat all problems with overheating where gon even in graphinc intense games it took the phone 30 minutes to heat up significantly + on a side note the battery got a lot better i managed 4 hours and 36 minutes of screen time.
Botom line its a software problem coupled with the nano coting(it blocks heat but not in a bad way that the phone will overheat from that maybe a 5`C block).
Overheating is the reason I didn't get the G2.
It overheated doing basic stuff.
It can't be fixed by software. LG certainly didn't release a fix, so don't expect one for the Z2.
When a phone has overheating problems then it will always have it, just like a laptop or any other hardware.
You'll have to deal with it.

Well not really my m7 used to get warm / hot with 3g or gaming up to 42c after sense 6 it refuses to go above 35c and when gaming up to 39c , so far only known phone that doesn't get hot is the m8. Imo it's tolerable for z2 to stay warmer then other devices , glass isn't the best option for cool phone + sealed phone due water resistance.
Btw yes warm / hot phones have shorter battery life due heat issues , warmer battery = faster discharge rate.
Imo if z2 gets hot only when gaming it's fine, all phones get warm but if it's crossing 37/38c up to 40+ on WiFi and normal usage I'd call that a problem. You can forget the gaming if this is the case lol , at least stable gaming without fps loss and throttle.
The overheating when using the camera is a bit of a concern, especially since that was one of the main reasons i bought the phone.
Is it definitely software related or hardware?
As if its software i can wait for a fix, but if its hardware then i'll need to swap phones
After reading other device forums seems like all the Snapdragon 800/801 devices have the overheating issue: SGS5, Z2, G2, etc.
I think it's because the new SoC is so powerful that it generates a lot of heart, especially when gaming.
Maybe the 805 will fix this. Not gonna buy a device with 800/801 because almost all of them have overheating issues.
I'm getting ready to pack in my M8, and I want to go the same size or smaller for under $450 (tops). The Z5c seems to be the only Android phone that really fits that bill while keeping respectable performance, but there are two issues that have me thinking twice: overheating and the "self-cracking glass".
I know nothing can be done about the screen (unless a tempered glass protector helps to keep it intact), but the overheating, if fixed, could sway me away from the Honor 8 or LG G5. I've read that the firmware update that came along with Marshmallow has largely fixed the problem, and combined with a patch available here that throttles the phone a little more aggressively, heat is no longer a big problem. That said, I'm concerned about gimping the performance of the phone in order to keep it from char-broiling my hands. How noticeable is the throttling and, if thermals are still an issue with the phone, how big of one are they?
If you wouldn't recommend the Z5c, the thermal issues remain or the throttling hurts performance in a noticeable way, I'd be curious if there are any other phones (with a micro SD slot) that you think are worth looking at.
Thanks!
Hey , i have my phone from March
this year, 3-4 updates still overheating..
battery top 46C, and cpu 60C MAX so far and stays there,
but! when battery reached 40C+ and CPU 60C+, device become 50% slow (i guess to prevent overheating)
on some games\apps you feel it, some not,
even on anutu cold device is about 90K hot device is about 50K score
after 5 -15 minutes of gaming already from 28 to 43, (depend room temp and game\app) sometimes i can shoot 4K videos for 10 minutes sometimes 1 hour
i think self cracked glass happening because two reasons
1 mainly reason: moving fast from cold when the glass is pretty hot by much (heat cause expanded)
2.sitting on device without notice
ps
sorry if my english is bad

Thank you! Do you know if the X Compact will run any cooler? The lower power chipset can only help, but I'm concerned about paying $500 for a phone that might not be as powerful as its older brother, which now retails for $100+ less, especially if the overheating and cracked glass issues aren't solved.
If only the Honor 8 wasn't riddled with iOS disease...
you're welcome
As far as iknow for the X compact does not have 4K, slower GPU,(CPU speed is about the same) not water resistant \proof

Any S810 device will overheat, it's inherently badly designed. Sony's hardware thermal solution is probably the best any OEM have done with the S810. It's also possible that Sony has optimized under-the-hood settings to further reduce load on the SoC and keep the temperature down.
Other software tweaks are mostly just a balance game of performance and throttling threshold.
Stock Sony firmware goes the more conservative route, so usually you won't experience noticeable heat when using it lightly.
It will still get pretty hot if you use it for intensive tasks that utilizes the full capacity of the hardware, such as playing demanding games, record in 4K for a long period of time, or watch videos that need a lot of complex decoding... etc.
If you're looking for performance without "unnecessary" throttling, just avoid all S810 devices.
Personally, most of the time I had no problems with the temp and perf of my Z5C, but there has been a few cases where I did experience slowdowns due to the throttling.
Got mine from December 2015. After few weeks of usage, it really overheats a lot. After several updates through the months, Device still overheats until now, still uncomfortable to the touch when it overheats. Tried reformatting yesterday, performance seems better with less bloatware stuff and on regular usage. But when cpu is under heavy load, device heats up and performance is reduced a lot to the point that it lags. But overall, still love my Z5C~ <3
It overheats uncomfortably. I tried xpower 4.0 ROM, smarttemperaturex mod, etc although it does reduce heat but not enough to be comfortable and im not talking about heavy tasks I'm talking about Firefox browser, WhatsApp and tapatalk.
The phone is almost never room temperature when using its either warm or hot which gets annoying after some time, don't even let me mention how hot it can get with few minutes of phone calls.
Sent from my E5823 using Tapatalk
I'd say go for X Compact. Zero overheating issues. This heat actually gets on your nerves at one point. While the gpu of X Compact is inferior, in long periods of gaming there won't be any throttling on XC but Z5c will give half the performance so at the end of the day, the X Compact will feel a lot snappier

It overheats like crazy. I'm flashing 5.1 in hope that it will help.
When running Antutu i put my phone in refrigerator so that I can get a better score! :silly:
Any new cpu is hotter than quad-core of sd800/801 bcoz it's now much faster, even sd820 gets hot during heavy loading though better than sd810.
I've flashed SmartTemperatureX v1.61(no charging bug) and found temp is acceptable and battery life improved a bit.
