So i was playing Rage of Bahamut, and i think my phone had enough.
The game locked up my entire phone at least 30 times in the past 2 days.
The last one had my phone in "safe mode" and upon reboot all my settings widgets folders and etc are gone
So what happened? What can i do? Why is this game so fubar for my phone

It would be difficult to say without knowing how your phone is configured. I've been playing for about a week and have had no problems.
One thing I've noticed is that the phone will get quite hot if I play while connected to AC while playing. But I guess that's to be expected. I have SetCPU set to performance governor and 1200MHz when plugged into a power source. I also have AutomateIt set to turn the screen to full brightness when plugged in.
Could overheating be your problem? If you're sometimes playing while plugged in (to conserve battery, as I am) you might consider using USB instead of AC.
I have been also playing this game for about 2 weeks. No problems... Wait Okay, let me explain my scenario. When i was playing the game on AOKP I experienced the heating problem mentioned above and swapped roms as I thought it was the rom. I uninstalled the game and used AOKP fine for a bit then re installed it and the heating persisted. So I swapped roms to MIUI V4. The problem has been gone ever since <3
I I really don't think my phone is heating up that much.
I've had some games heat my phone to 113 fahrenheit - and sometimes during gaming and charging I'd reach 131 fahrenheit.
I use to use a profile in setCPU that would lower my CPU from 1.6 to 1.2 or something if the temperature got up about 45 degrees celsius but stopped using it because it made my games lag
I don't think my cpu goes above 105 degrees while playing Rage of Bahamut

Well, it was just a suggestion as to a possible cause. Not knowing how your phone is even set up makes it hard to hazard a guess. Like I said, I have had zero problems with this phone while running RoB.
I was looking at market reviews of the game, narrowed down to our device, and out of four pages of reviews there was only one mention of a GS2 locking up repeatedly.
What kernel are u using and are u trying to overclock? Because if yer running above the 1.2 ghz stock with no undervolting and doing it for long periods of time I mean....its gonna get hot as hell. But that's kinda expected. Almost guaranteed. And yer gonna experience problems if u continue to push it like that, only because of the amount of stress yer putting on the phone .
"Sent from my SGS2 running AOKP. Open source or GTFO."
You seriously overclock your phone all the time?............... you're just asking for issues. I literally have no advice for you besides saying maybe underclock your phone. what do you possibly need to do that the phones stock clk freq can't handle!?

Would you like being sustained in 113 degrees Fahrenheit? Most likely not. Trust me, your phone doesn't like it either.

I was playing Crusade of Destiny (full scale 3D single play RPG) while charging my phone and noticed the phone was feeling really really hot.
My phone is on Bionix 1.9.1 (OC/UV/VooDoo) and I used SetCPU to OC it to 1.2ghz.
Being me, I didn't want to melt my phone so I stopped playing and used SetCPU to check my battery temperate- low and behold, it was a little over 122°F. I went ahead and cooled the phone down asap by putting it in the freezer for a good minute or so and temperature went back down to 98°F.
My question is, at what limit should the temperature be at to insure myself that the phone will be okay?

I set up a profile on SetCPU so if my phone reaches ~120F it give me an audible warning and clocks it down to 800 max. I know some ppl have had problems with profiles, however, they work just fine for me. I have heard that the Vibrant will start getting screwy around 125F, so best to keep it under that.
Ah, didn't know I could set an audible warning with SetCPU.
Wow I was closing to screwing up my phone then. Scary.
A lot of people report it heating up like that when charging and using the phone at the same time. If it ever got that high, I think its common sense to stop playing or maybe close what your doing (3d games or something heavy on the processor) I personally never got past 120 F...
I'd at the very least not OC. That game runs well with the stock kernel and no lagfix

I would strongly suggest NOT putting your phone in the freezer. ESPECIALLY when its running hot. Sudden temperature changes tend to crack electronics.
If you're worried, unplug it from the charger and turn it off. Maybe take the battery out (carefully).

Other Battery problems...
I'm running 2.1 w/ one-click root and one click lag fix. I uninstalled ATK for the stock task manager set to strict, and I usually have wifi and gps. Ever since rooting and teh lag fix my battery has been hot battery is draining very quickly. Next thought is to just make the jump to 2.2. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
When I flashed to Project Core kernal 1.2 and severe heat problems. Especially when overclocked passed 1 ghz you're gonna have heat issues. I don't really use my phone as it charges and i kill tasks that are not in use. Currently I'm using project core kernal v1 1ghz and its working great for me.
hi guys i find that when i use the phone for a little bit like on voice call or playing a game the phone become literally super hot and its reached 45 degrees c according to my battery indicator app is that dangerous and is anyone else had the same problem ?
my sgs2 also overheats! i don't know why
Whatever electric device You switch on and make it work it gets warm. If You make it work HARD it gets warmer to hot.
If You work it in summer and direct sunshine it gets hotter than under the same workload at the Northpole at Xmas.
CPUs produce heat under workload the same do screens. The higher the frequencies the hotter they will get.
It is simple physics. So what ?

i understand that the cpu and other hardware can produce heat however i would have thourght there would be some sort of heat regulator that would underclock it to reduce the temp like in setcpu when rooted. at what do u think is the highest temp the phone could go before killing it self ?

Normal cpus can go to 70 - 80 degrees C. I would say now if the phone doesn't go over like 55 degrees it's fine.
I don't think this is normal personally. My phone has become hot a few times now and I think it was wifi sharing process causing it both times.
I ended this process using the System Panel app and carried on using the phone in the same way and the phone cooled right down again.

I have frozen wifi sharing so I don't know. But my phone almost never gets hot except if I download big files.
the reason the phone gets hot is because the phone is very cramped and cant dissipate heat effectively . the simplest example is a laptop and a desktop, even though both may have the same configuration a laptop gets much hotter than a desktop because it cant dissipate heat effectively as a desktop which has much bigger heat sink

I am no my second GS2 and the issue persists.
Issue:
When charging overnight, the battery gets extremely hot. So much it warps the sim card. The first phone overheated until it died. Last night the second phone overheated until the warning message “charging paused due to temp” came up. I do use a CPU intensive app that uploads files to my server when plugged in. (so it doesn’t drain the battery). I have used all these apps on my old captivate with no issues with overheating.
I have tried Unnamed 2.2.1 and ICSreweD 1.6.1 roms, but the battery still overheats. Unless this might be a faulty batch from the store, what areas should I look into? At the end of the day, I would really like to continue to allow the app to run while charging. Especially since I have used it with less powerful phones prior. I have read others have this same issue with the GS2 but no solutions as of yet. Is there a different ATT phone that does not have this issue?
Silly question, but I know many who do this...
Do you place your phone under your pillow overnight while charging?
When charging and running a app that requires high cpu usage will overheat the battery. So close it at night while charging.
Damn warping the card. **** that's bad.
One time at football camp i put my shoulder pads in my ass
If you need to keep the app running while plugged in all night, what about using a plugged in profile in set CPU to throttle to 800 mhz Max or something...

Set it with setcpu or tasker. It's likely running at 1200 mhz all night right now. (assuming you don't OC). Try throttling it down to 500 or 800 mhz, it should help. Not sure if there's anything that limits specific apps though.

Sets max CPU clock to 200mHz while phones asleep.
Also great for battery life

If you absolutely have to leave your phone performing such intensive tasks all night, this is what I would try.
As twiggums said, it is probably running at 1200 all night and just melting itself. Unlike most computers, everything in our phones is passively cooled. Something else you might try is removing the battery cover (and any phone case) and placing a fan blowing directly on it. I know that is extreme, but so is what is happening to your phone.
Hope this helps.
I have also experienced this and it's really annoying. I couldn't love a human child as much as I love this phone but the overheating is not cool. I was using my phone to navigate while charging and once it got so hot that it locked up and another time it paused the charging due to thermal issues.

I had to do that sometimes when downloading some big files and tethering. Lol
Since my PC is caseless it wasn't that hard pointing a 120mm fan to it.
And yes it did work.

IIRC entropy mentioned some time ago that he throttles CPU to 800 mhz when using nav and charging...keeps it cooler and allows for slight charge rather than drain...
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
Yeah I'd suggest possibly throttling the CPU. I charge my phone while driving and stream Pandora and use navigation. I've got mine set to Max out at 500 while screen off and it works fine.
Ideally our phones should be able to handle sustained 1200 mhz. But then when you add a case and the heat generated while charging I guess it's too much for some. Guess it's the price we pay to have a beast of a CPU
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
thanks for the tips on throttling the cpu. i had thought about that and will probably do it but i still thinks its really lame that we have to do this. i dont even have a case on my phone. what are people who arent rooted and cant underclock their cpus supposed to do? oh well i guess
I have started to notice this on my phone. it happens when I'm in the car only though. Here's the situation.
It seems anytime I run Navigation my phone cranks up in heat to the point that I can't touch it. Is this a ROM/Kernel issue, or a problem in the phone itself?

Well if your sig is correct and you're running at 1600 MHZ, I'd say that's probably why. Running at that speed for prolonged periods is likely to generate some heat.

I run Set CPU and my sig isn't correct. Well, the 1600 mhz isn't at least. I have it capped at 1000. It's just odd that I can multi task any number of applications without a problem. I use navigation and instantly, the only application I can use is that one. Running Pandora or the phone or the phone interrupts pandora or the phone interrupts navigation and I get this error and the screen gets untouchable.

Hmm possibly reflash your ROM. I can run nav and Pandora fine, and my phone limits my CPU to 500mhz while screen is off. Or at least try reinstallin maps/nav, sounds like its gobbling up way too much CPU for some reason.

I told Pandora to not turn off the screen. I would think that Nav would do that natively or else it would negate the purpose of it. I wonder if maybe telling Pandora to keep the screen on and Nav keeping it on natively makes it think really hard and heat up.

After how long does it get warm when you play games like NOVA 3 and such?
For me it does after like 10-20min which is somewhat short to me, but then again, I've never owned a proper flagship phone such as the s3 before.
My phone gets heated up to 47°c after 20mins of riptide.

Your phone does what? Are you overclocking or something? My S2 doesn't get to 47°C after 1h of NOVA 3 while still being overclocked(Both the CPU and GPU).And the S3 is supposed(And I think proven too) to produce less heat than the S2.
My S3 gets a bit warmer too. Think it will be fixed in subsequent rom releases. Same thing happened with my S2 when I had it; it went away eventually

My s3 barely produces any heat compared to my s2,that thing was burning the flesh in my hands... Maybe that's the reason nova 3 runs sluggish on my phone but not to anyone else?

Has stock roms ever fixed the heat issues through updates in the past (on other phones ofc), or do I have to root and flash a custom rom to decrease the heat?

I can't find any details for the Exynos chip in the S3, but afaik most ARM devices have a Tmax (maximum CPU temperature) of 50-something (58?) degree Celsius.
So if it's already 42 outside, you can expect the system to be 52 as air-cooling is terribly inefficient, especially in hot dry air.
When you fire up some games it will thus go above it's threshold and automatically reduce it's performance to keep itself from being damaged due to overheating.
Is it normal, that the phone gets really hot, if i play some games !? i mean, sometimes it's so hot, that i can't touch the screen ...

Of course it gets hot if you do anything CPU intensive for any length of time (even more so on charge). The CPU has no cooling, no effective heatsink & is in a very enclosed space near other components that also get hot (including the battery). It's not like a PC CPU which has at least one fan & a heatsink (and vents), not to mention plenty of clearance (compared to a phone at least) between components in a desktop PC at least which allows heat to dissipate better.

I know this is an old thread, but I just started having this problem. I've had my Galaxy S2 since March 2013 but only in the past week as the phone been heating up and draining battery power to almost nothing in a matter of four or five hours. I used to be able to use the phone multiple times over the course of the day with no issue of heating or battery power, but ever since Friday 12/13 I've had this problem. It gets so hot I keep it off until I need it, and I'm used to keeping it turned on. Even keeping it in airplane mode doesn't keep it from heating up. I've had other Samsung Android phone users tell me of the same thing happening only in the past week, not before that. Any idea what it could be?
