Good Evening
I have just rooted and installed the above ROM from the development section of the site. But i cant post in that thread with this problem as i dont have access.
My problem is that i want to use a Titanium Backup i have on my computer and re-install all of my apps etc, but i cant access the tablet as a USB device. It does not work in USB debugging mode or with it turned off (which worked fine with my honeycomb ROM (stock ROM))
Any ideas as to why i cant access it? Or any help on how i can would be appreciated.

any idea on how i can get this to work on xp pro? i installed the stand alone samsung driver (not kies) and when it's connected via MTP, i can only transfer media files and not regular files.
What do you mean media files and not regular? When you transfer movies to it, it will ask to convert, just say no, and it will transfer the raw version.

no. what i meant is that it will just say "this is not a media file type" and will just ask whether to skip the file or cancel. meaning non media files (i.e. everything outside of music and video) will just be refused.

foliage, I don't know how your getting that, normally when you copy stuff via USB you get only 2 options in MTP "Convert" or not.

it's weird cuz it only happens on my work computer which is xp pro. mtp works fine on my w7 laptop though. just thought someone would know why. oh well.
EDIT: i got it to work by simply upgrading my windows media player to ver. 11 in case anyone else runs into the same issue as me.

Does anybody know, why the 'Mass Storage' option is grayed out in the Storage settings | USB computer connection (three dots on top - menu) while MTP and PTP are available?

I can't believe you can't sync or transfer files via usb. Someone please tell me I'm wrong because I've been googling for an hour and looks like the transfer program from asus is for pc only. I can use dropbox for smaller files but video transfers are going to be a pain. Any ideas?

There's no reason to have to use a transfer program. Just mount as SD device
ASUS probably expects Mac users to be using a iPad.

Care to explain how? It doesn't mount as an SD device, or give the option to do that. It shows up as using MTP, like the Galaxy Tab.

AirDroid is the bomb! Try it. Mac or pc & interface & functions are phenomenal.. it is what I use daily. Plus it is free.
Android file transfer has a file size limit! What the heck? Any ideas on transferring large files?

Does USB Debugging enable USB Mass Storage? I believe it does on Gingerbread. I've read reports it doesn't on ICS though.

It does not sadly.
Why there's no mass storage is beyond me. Hopefully a FW update (probably in early autumn) will fix it.

Unfortunately not. Google moved from UMS to MTP with Honeycomb because UMS locks out the storage to the phone when it's plugged into a computer.
I've never heard of this being an actual problem for anyone. You've only got it plugged in for a set period of time.

Hi, I went to setting, more, USB utilities, this is where my problem starts.
My phone say, "USB is connected. Remove the cable." but my phone isn't connected to the cable!

If you are having a rooted phone, there are StickMount from chainfire, Alt Mounter and SGS3 easy UMS that will allow you to connect the android in Mass Storage Mode.
Can someone post a link for SGS3 easy UMS because download keeps failing from site and Google didn't help.

[APP] [v1.1] Mount external microSD card as USB mass storage
Stick Mounter has nothing to do with UMS.
Alt Mounter requires a helper service on the computer and can only provide FTP access, no real mass storage.
Here's what you can run on the Terminal (the Helper app only runs the commands for you; easier to use)

Whether it works with car hifi etc depends on your devices. A user 'Siran' reported that his car-stereo took some time to recognize it and the playback had hiccups, but at least the last issue could be attributed to the SDcard not being unmounted in the phone before mounting it on the computer.

The side effect is the same as always; that particular card is not mounted and available in the phone as long as it's mounted as mass-storage on external devices. However that should not be a real issue. No negative side effects are known or likely to exist.

Well, isn't possible then to use it simultaneously from the phone and the usb? What does this app stand for then?
Multi Mount SD-Card and MountUSB Widget
It is, check the "--- BELOW ..." lines in my link.
However it WILL cause data corruption and data loss and might even cause the SDcard's filesystem to be damaged beyond repair.
What you do is use the same filesystem in 2 distinct locations which individually write on it.
To understand how that causes an issue, you'll have to get a basic understanding of a filesystem; they actually work like a science book.
You have an index listing all directories and files aswell as their relation to each other and where on the SDcard the file is stored.
Now if a file is modified the index is changed and then the file added,changed or deleted.
So far, so wel.
If you now mount it on 2 locations (mind you: filesystems don't know about that, so each location thinks it is the sole one accessing it) and work from 2 locations on the same data you have a rather high chance that one operating system will eventually overwrite or alter data without the other one knowing about it.
If the index is too damaged you'll not only loose some files but potentially all filenames and folders. Applications like Recuva can recover most of the files (at least usually) but it won't be pretty, easy and complete.
Simply don't do it. There is a reason why noone implements it
Just tried SGS3 easy UMS on my Tv and Dvd player through their host and worked fine with music, videos and images, and i'll check my car stereo tomorrow, so thanks d4fseeker.

You mean OTG (USB On the GO). I though it was for both OTG and MSC.
Last night, due to the wonders of MTP, it took me nearly 2 hours to transfer 2gb of data from my S2 over to the S3, with many popup interruptions delaying the transfer.
God I hate MTP's speed with many small files. But I guess it could be worse if they locked the filesystem down.
Hello, I really hate that the s3 doesn`t have usb mass storage, I saw someone saying that mtp is better than the clasic transfer but I really see no advantages.Is pretty hard to recover a file once deleted as you can`t assign a drive letter , you can`t use your phone while files are being transferred but the most annoying of all is that you can`t preview your pictures/videos before copying it, so tell me, how is mtp better than usb mass storage that was on s2?
My digital camera has mtp also and I CAN preview the pictures before copying them to my pc so this is possible, the question is how can I do this on my s3 also?Is very annoying that I have to check every picture and video as you don`t know what you are transferring.

I don't know which one is better but if you want UMS then there is a app called easy ums that you can download if you are rooted. Just search for it in the forums.

thanks but is useless for me, If I would knew about this inconvenient before buying I would have bought the 16 gb version with a 16 gb microsd but I dont have any microsd, I only have the 32 gb of the phone.

- Apps don't loose their data (which they often store on the /sdcard) while mounted on the computer
- Compatibility across all MTP-capable computers and electronic devices
- Conversion into supported format by host computer (ok, that one might not be a real advantage))

It's usually very hard to recover files on any SSD-drive since they usually rely on TRIM support. (FAT32 doesn't even have this capability though)

The usb mass storage was such a nice feature, I couldn`t guess that they will delete it on the s3, the advantages are meaningless as I didin`t had any problem with my s2 . why my digital camera with mtp allows to preview the pictures as thumbnails the the s3 not?Is that impossible to preview the files before copying with the s3 via usb?

i hope there is a solution to this, it's kinda bugging me as well. =(
Workaround : I always rename the pictures or videos in phone 1st before connect to PC. Is easier to recognise which files I want to transfer rather than waiting for the thumbnails.

Mine lets me see thumbnails for movies and pictures in MTP mode.
Maybe because I'm running CM-based instead of sammy based?
Don't use sammy crap.
Also the wireless samba filesharing mentioned earlier is fantastic, don't have to plug my phone into my pc at all now.

can you please give more details, what exactly did you changed in your phone?
He's running CM, which is Cyanogenmod.
CM is a modified (enhanced) version of Google's original Android version without manufactur-specific bloatware and issues such as Touchwiz which is quite a memory-hog.
Also it usually is somewhat more stable

ok thanks but I think ill pass, from what i`ve read the thread seems that are many issues and bugs with it, won`t worth to gain that preview to get for it tons of bugs and crashes, seems that the only reasonable way is to buy a 16 gb microsd to use it like good old s2.

You could also download the XXALF2 kernel and flash it. That fixes MTP connection and you can stay on Sammy ROM. Tried it myself. ALF2 is the last kernel MTP ever worked for me with my iMac. Or cm9 or cm10....

bought a 16gb class 10 microsd, I`m happy that at least my card will work the same as s2, I can use my phone while i`m copying files and stuffs, I can preview them before and I also made 5 pictures, deleted them and was able to recover them, this 3 things weren`t possible with the ****ty mtp.The only bad thing seems to be that the burst shot photos are saved on the phone, I heard that somehow we can force the phone to save them to the microsd but I don`t know how.
May not be of any help but I personally use Airdroid for data transfer off the internal memory, aslong as you have a wireless n router I find it better than using MTP. (have had lots of tranfer freeze ups with MTP so gave up using it). Downside is atmo airdroid doesn't seem to be able to access external storage, so would use UMS, card reader, etc for that.
Is this a major issue or can it be fixed? Connecting as either MTP or PTP: neither allows one to see pictures saved as default by phone camera to DCIM folder on external SD card. my older Samsung galaxy s worked like a charm when connecting to a compute. I could see all pics but not with the SIII. Please, can someone please show me how to fix this?

I do not understand Samsung( I'm assuming it's their fault) why everytime they take a step forward, they take one step back. Why make things so difficult?

Test take two vids and three pictures .
Connect with Samsung usb cable phone and PC .
Open ext sd card in explorer .
Locate DCIM .
Result 3 pictures and two vids visible .
Suggest you backup your data and factory reset .

You'll have pictures alright, but you can't see the thumbnail at all.
I assumed it has something to do with MTP?
I see the thumbnails fine in MTP mode.
Then again, I'm running AOKP and not sammy based.
See them fine on aosp and cm9

Well, if I am doing a transfer of a particular pic or trying to transfer pics over to my phone I'll like to know which one I am transferring. So, yes, I will need to see a thumbnail of it. I am using the original Samsung ROM. As I said before, the first version did this without any complaints. Why should this be any different?
so, is my only result is to backup 12gigs of info and format my usb and factory reset my phone so I can see thumbnail pics? Sounds ridiculous to me.
On sammy stock rom it wont show you thumbs. Dont know why and dont know how to fix it but i know it doesnt and thats normal.

OK. Thanks but how does video help me? There is no mentioned of my issue i nthat video.
I left a message to the owner of the rom, seems that his rom is able to preview the pictures and I asked him to only make a fix for this, you can support me there to show him that more ppl are interested about this inconvenient so maybe he will fix it for us.

I too am having the same issue with a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S2. The SD Card did connect as a Mass Storage Device with no issues until I upgraded the O/S to ICS version 4.04. After upgrading it only connects as an MTP device. The USB Utilities section of the Settings Menu is no longer there. Either is the option to Connect To PC which enabled the mass storage connection. This is not a Samsung or PC issue. From what I have read this problem is unique to Sprint's version of Ice Cream Sandwich although not having access to other carriers version of ICS, I can not verify this. Perhaps users on other carriers can post more info on this. I am looking at downgrading my phone back to Gingerbread.

I am aware that UMS (USB Mass Storage) has now been replaced by MTP / PTP. I hate this new development. Biggest reason - not possible to sync! And when you're working with thousands of files (not media files), this is crucial. I am now on SnowJB 4.1.2. And wasted 2 days finding a solution.
So, Simple question. Does UMS mode at least work on the oldest ICS ROM available 4.0.4? Can I connect my phone to Windows and have the SD card come up as a drive with a drive letter?
Those who are still on ICS, please let me know so I can ditch all the latest ROMs etc and revert back. MTP sucks. If I had known this was how it was gonna be, I would stayed with my old Motorola Atrix 2.
And another thing, does anyone know of any ROM at all which supports UMS? Or any other work around that does not involve taking my card out and using a card reader etc?

Nope, UMS is not available on any rom for this phone.

I know I've had the UMS option with at least one ROM, I believe it was CFX.
I'm running Rootbox right now though, so I can't confirm.

Another option is syncing in MTP mode.
Anyone know if this at least is possible?
What software can be used to transfer only the changed and new files from Windows to your MTP folder?

I don't remember 100% which rom it was on, but I KNOW I've had the option.
EDIT: That is to say, I can't recall ever seeing an actual option in Settings or anything, but I HAVE plugged my phone in to my work computer and had it show up as a UMS device instead of MTP. (the difference being UMS works on my work computer lol [and I mean proper FS access and everything])
It might've been Project E.L.E., might've been LiquidSmooth, might've been Carbon, I honestly don't recall. I know I've seen it once.
OP, just try a bunch of roms. It's not going to hurt anything.
Cheetah Sync is the answer
Back after long for a quick post. Just to inform I found that Cheetah Sync is the answer to (quick enough) syncing. Log on to to your Wifi server and sync away. You need a to install a small program on your desktop as well. Pretty alright. Its the only way to sync all subfolders and files.
