This thread will be dedicated to improving the user experience of the Sony Xperia S.
It can be either software, hardware or even accessory related. Please keep contributions to this thread simple and 'to the point' to avoid cluttering the pages.
I'll start:
- Sliding your finger over the capacitive buttons instead of pressing on them will give you 100% accuracy.
- Installing the app "Battery" by Macropinch will allow you to have your remaining battery percentage appear in the notification bar.
- Go to Settings -> Network Settings -> Mobile Network -> Network Mode -> (by selecting either WCDMA only OR GSM only modes will reduce battery consumption, as opposed to having the phone decide for you)
- Go SMS Pro (the best SMS app)
- Dolphin HD (the best browser app)
Feel free to add.
I was going to start that thread, but u raced me to it
Anways, great job!!
Others :
- Install quick settings by APS for those who like settings' shortcuts in the status bar
- Don't apply other screen protectors on the device, there's one already installed
- Choose a still wallpaper, live ones eat up battery
- Badass battery monitor is a cool alternative

Use wallpaper images that are 1440x1280. Because of wallpaper scrolling android wants a wallpaper double the screen width even if you disable wallpaper scrolling.
Darken the wallpaper or/and use a warm filter. The screen shows the wallpapers to cold when compared to a calibrated display.
Set the wallpaper using quickpic. The stock android gallary will make the wallpaper look blurry.
My favorite browser is Opera Mobile, nice looking and smooth
Some good tips here guys, cheers ;-)

I noticed the list of unnecessary services running in the background is quite long.
I tried uninstalling them but they keep appearing in the Google Play list.
Also killing them doesn't help as they relaunch immediately.
It seems I'll have to unlock and root my phone to remove them
I didn't check how they contribute to cpu load, but I think getting rid of those will only help improve battery life and responsiveness.
Check the screenshots for a snapshot of system processes and background services for the software ver. 73
Use the power saver that comes with the phone to save battery automatically at night (set up Timed Saver) and when battery is about to dry (default 25% battery saver).
Set it to turn off everything during power saving to achieve maximum batt life.
With this on, I only get about 5% power loss in the morning after a full charge the night before.
I think this is a very good feature sony has add to its phones.
Install GO TaskManager, IMO a very well designed task manager app, functionality is great too.
About the screen,
one, don't put on a screen protector, it degrades the quality of the display
it is strong enough to withstand most scratches.
two, backlight is not really necessary during daytime, 50% brightness is very pleasant to view and saves a lot of juice.

Now, I really want to replace the Sony bridge for mac with other software to copy musics movies and other files onto my device.
The Bridge is very buggy, and slow as hell.
I've tried a few apps outside that claims to able to connect devices with MTP mode, but no luck with the Xperia S.
Any suggestions?

It's great there's wifi file transfer...but at my place I can only connect to wifi one device at a time (University housing), which basically makes all these wireless transfer useless...
I really want to know if there's a better wired file transfer option.
Just right now the Sony Bridge hanged again when I tried to copy my 700 songs into it...
Seriously Sony, can't I just mount the device like I use to do with all my previous Android devices?

I agree on most of it.
However:
1. Why do you really need extra task manager on this device? Everything is there.
2. The only app on X S which doesn't work properly is email. Because there was an #@&! there at Sony who made the app store 25 emails per account on device. What makes this app totally useless in any situation. Use K9 email which apparently is profi. It's a pity one has to replace native app, because stock X S email app looks great and handles emails great too.
3. Install X-Plore! It's the best file xplorer you can have really.
If you're using the standard music application, go to settings and use "custom equalizer". Tweak it a bit while listening to music from the genre you listen to the most, it'll make a huge difference overall.
If ur phone rooted, add this line to build.prop for faster, smoother transition:
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=160
Then reboot, or you can increase vm heap size to 64m.

wifi file explorer is great, but i recomend also try Samba Filesharing by funkyfresh and File Expert (FTP/HTTP server) which i use with FileZilla on PC - superb fast copying, moving etc.

So far I haven't seen any benefit to running a task manager. Honestly wouldn't bother with it.

hola,
yesterday i updated via Kies to 2.3.4 and it seems to be very good - fixed the annoying data stalling issue which was a big one however i noticed that the phone lags a bit, its not that much but it does, and when opening texts, if it's a long conversation it's def slower than before.
i was running KF3 and now i have been updated to baseband "KI1" my CSC is XEU KH2..is there a quick lagfix or something i can flash?
finally, any way to put back the other fonts which were less bold if i wanted?
thanks
gabrio
Anyone abt this?

Did you try Settings -> Display -> Screen Display -> Font Style?
From all I know, I can change fonts on STOCK Samsung ROM 2.3.5, not sure about 2.3.4, but I get three font options (Default, Choco Cooky and Helvetica S)
Awesome changed that.. Like it.more.with helvetica
Thanks!!

Little Lag Clarification and Font
I will update my sgs2 to KI1 tonight, and tomorow I will test the issues i've had like the wifi-sharing (running out of control), battery life (in my opinion too short) and some heat while playing.
Just to know when are you experiencing lag, it is a delayed response to touch or it is like a graphical load?
About the font change I use Fontomiser app. With this one you can change the font to any font you like.

Well here is my feedback about it:
The good:
- battery life is good in my opinion, normal use no push gmail, some calls some txt some browsing display like 40%, I can do 2 days basically with phone in flight mode overnight and in a 8 hrs period consumes approx 5% overnight for me; on second day for dinner around 21 I would have like 15-20% or 25% depends.
- hard usage calls, text, apps installation, settings change, watching some clips, a hd movie lots of browsing and wifi at around 23 of day one I have like 20-23-25% left. I expect it to improve after some more charges as I have the phone just 2 weeks now.
- data stalling issue that was present with 2.3.3 kf for me, is now fixed
- fonts: there is a new default font in 2.3.4 that I dont really like tho if u go to settings > display > screen display > font style you can choose 3 fonts and I, really like the helvetica one, is super sharp love it! (maybe was there before, not sure)
minor probs:
- when screen goes off the dim animation is not smooth, which was ok before I think.
- I had a thread with lots of txt like 100 or more and when opening that the txt window slowed a bit in opening and did not appear smooth. I deleted that thread and on smaller threads is fine now.
- not 100% abt this... When you browse home screens its a little slower the sliding between sceeens.
However, this is small stuff, its not that the phone gets stuck on something.. Its pretty good and I think they fixed that wifi prob you were describing, I never tested that myself really.
Overall phone is great.. Its a bit off that they fix one thing and lil things go off but im sure they are doing their best.
People always complain esp with new devices, and yes is a bit frustrating but I think all will be good soon since so.many users with this phone so samsung must be bang on abt this one!
Feel free to share your feedback!

KI1 Feedback
Here is my feedback in some months of use.
The battery life looks the same.
The CPU use is higher at less requiring CPU processes and lower at high requiring CPU processes.
Temperature feels higher with simple tasks. I think them are demanding more CPU so it heats more.
It sure does lag on main screen after you exit some applications... its kinda annoying that the icons take a little longer to appear.
Overall: It's a good update because they fixed the (annoying battery drainer) wifi sharing.

In general I am very pleased with my TP201 but I have a few niggles I would like sorting. They are as follows:
Cannot set email pictures to load by default?
Play back of Music is alphabetical not in the Album order as the artist intended?
Cannot set browser to load desktop view by default?
There is a 'double %' on the weather widget in Humidity?
Cannot set device to run in 'performance mode' by default - keeps going back to balanced mode?
Need better control and options to store apps on removable storage?
Look forward to some fixes

Call ASUS, this isn't a blog.
Wel that response was a little harsh...
I think these are all legitimate concerns. Right off the top of my head I can think of one that will solve a problem. Download ICS Browser +. It looks and feels exactly like the stock browser but in the settings you can set the user agent to desktop.
There is also a way to do this with the stock browser...I think you need to enter the words "about:config" or something like that into the address bar and that brings up some new hidden options where you can change it. I suggest ics browser + though since it is the stock browser but better.
I can't help you with the other stuff but the double % thing bugs the hell out of me too. Beautiful widgets is an option but I just don't like the look of it on a tablet.
Balance mode is the default preset mode. As it gets the best battery life and performance. Best of both worlds. You go performance battery drains faster. Go powersave mode and you loose out on processing power. BALANCED gets best of both of them.
There is a way to have yours boot performance on boot. Actually 2 ways. Both methods need root. One is getting system tuner and setting the governor to performance. It'll stay that way till you change it. On boot it'll load that governor you chose. Another way is to get script manager or Gscript to enable vipercontrol mod on boot. Considering you choose performance option in it.

I believe just changing the governer isn't the same as changing the performance mode.

You right. The system tuner governor changed to performance is a more aggressive performance tune. Technically it is the same though. Just system tuner performance mode is more heavy aggressive

Why calling ASUS!? -
These aren't particurlary ASUS related issues. This is more or less Android standard behaviour, e.g. the browser is android stock.
Of course the "double %" is ASUS related as it's their widget. But I think they are aware of it.
However, use an other Browser e.g. Opera or if you really (!) like the stock one, there is a special adapted version on the market (ics browser +) that let you set the user agent flag.
If you really like listening to music there are lots of more powerful apps on the market than the stock app.
And email apps? - I do not need to tell ... but. Hey, ever hear of the market.
If you want a system that is closed and works perfectly in its closed way, just buy apple products (argh, have I really written that down here)
The philosophy behind Android looks different.
You should not make the producer responsable in the first place.
E.g. take a look at your <<system performance>> issue. Maybe other users want it to be set as default into <<balanced mode>> when booting up (like it is now). So, what should ASUS do? Listen to you? Listen to them? - I tell you! Just gain root access and change it by yourself. That is what Android is like.
Take advantage of it, otherwise you could have bought as well a <<fruit of a tree>>.

What's a niggle?
Dear members,
coming freshly to Android and the Xperia S, I've got some questions for which I didn't find an answer, yet, and hope you can somewhat enlighten me.
The phone is LTi26, running 4.0.4, rooted on a reseller contract of Germany's D2/Vodafone.
regarding the Walkman-App, am I just to blind or noobish, or is there really no option to empty the list of currently playing tracks?
at home, I've got EDGE at best and use WiFi, but on the run, I can get 3G/UMTS. Is there a simple toggle/switcher, I can change networks with a single tap, instead of always digging through the menu?
regarding GPS, if it's off and I turn it on, there's always a window popping up, telling me costs may apply, data may be send, etc. Any way to dismiss this window forever?
is it possible to remap the camera button in certain situations? F.e., when the display is off and locked, I'd love to be able to give it a double-tap and have it turn on the camera's flash. Also, if the currently visible and active app isn't the camera app, it would be nice to use this button as a 'back'-button, so I can easily push it with my pinky.
I've read, that AMOLED displays can save power, when they display mostly dark/black colors, IIRC the Xperia S has no AMOLED, but is there a similar possibility? I'm not interested in fancy wallpapers, so it wouldn't hurt me much.
I'm currently happily using the ssLauncher in replacement of Sony's, but in the widget selection, some things don't show up, f.e. the music widget and the 'extras' (on click toggles). Is this a problem of this particular launcher and is there any way to still use them in this launcher?
I've seen a thread with a video, showing how to prick open the phone and be able to exchange the battery, but are there also compatible batteries available which feature a higher capacity?
I've installed the drobear SSHd (no links for noobs), but I'm not able to connect, it always gets a timeout. Not compatibe/config issue(client in question is my Gentoo desktop)?
Other than that, I must say, I'm currently quite pleased with this phone and Android in general. Coming from Maemo, there are still some things I'd like to be able to, but so far it's a good start and so far I'm glad, I didn't opt for the One S or the Droid.
Thanks for your help, regards,
S.D.R

While I'm at it, I'm missing FM transmit functionality, as in I had it with my old phone(N900). As far as I've read, it seems, the chip really only allows receiving in hardware, so not a fully functional module with the transmitting functionality disabled, correct? If that's the case, does someone have experience with fm transmission, as in what pieces of hardware are needed? If it's rather small, I'd love to get on of the bottom pieces, the one with the xperia writing on it, add a 3.5mm jack and the hardware and add it to the top of the phone, but I guess that's wishful thinking?!
I wanted to start a thread that shows some good apps for the HTC One. If you have any that are good, feel free to post them.
A couple I have that are pretty good are:
1) Wave Launcher: can add more apps to save space on pages. Can't really explain it, but look it up.
2) BetterBatteryStats: I like this app because I can see how much screen time I get from a full charge.
I'm looking for new apps for the One. If you have any I'd love to know them. Thanks

atk really>>>> that was used in the 1&2 series of android phones STOP running it... It causes your phone to use more battery to restart the processes than it does save battery...
1- Power Toggles. Free Notification Toggles make it much easier to change settings vs Sense Settings Menu. I really like adding in Recent Apps shortcut as well.
2- Galaxy Pack. Battery last long enough for me to use a Live Wallpaper, and Galaxy Pack is simply one of the best with lots of options.
3- gReader.

Definitely this, getting 4+ hours of on screen time makes me happy.
Thanks to Laporte for getting me on this app.
You can activate it with the nova launcher activities, the path is settings / optimizer video. As standard it does not appear in the Samsung soft, also once you have achieved the shortcut you must activate it. All multimedia apps appear, Netflix, HBO, Amazon prime video, Mx player, Samsung video and some more like Youtube, Vanced etc. The improvement is remarkable, now it is seen with very rich colors, more contrast and brightness, It also corrects the excess of overexposed images that in my opinion detracted from the screen, now it is incredible to watch series and movies! For those of you who don't use nova launcher, I suppose that with an app like create shortcurts from the playstore it will also be possible to get it. Yeahhhhhh !!!!!
Thanks for this.
The name for this toggle is: hdreffectsettingsactivity
After using it takes you to your system settings with an on/off toggle. For unknown reason Samsung removed it from device settings, so we have to fiddle with 3rd party tools to reenable it. Please fix Samsung.
For whats its worth i think Mx player has this enabled by default everytime you watch hdr 10bit encoded video. Not 100% correct but when watching with mx player that nice and sharp image is still there.

Once you activate it you can delete nova launcher if you want, it will be fixed or it should. I do notice a clear improvement, the screen has more contrast and the colors are much more intense with the naked eye. Now we see 100% of what our amoled can give. If you do not perceive a change it is strange. My tablet is still on android 9 ... yours on android 10? Maybe that's the reason!
I'm on 10 but yes you're right I do see some improvement, it doesn't effect all apps only a few. Thanks again for the tip.

Me too. Nova and Action launcher does not show me the option. Running Lineage 18.1 Android 11.
I enabled it and tested it. It works by crancing up your screen brightness up a really really lot.
You should worry about screen burn in since the tablet is oled.
Hence I disabled it again.
If you open for example youtube app with this enabled the only thing it seems to do is putting whole screen including comment section into maximum brightness.
I understand Samsung why they don't give this option available to customers not understanding oled burn in.
I recommend you to disable it. In the future you might think back if you got burnin oled display.

I enabled it and tested it. It works by crancing up your screen brightness up a really really lot.
You should worry about screen burn in since the tablet is oled.
Hence I disabled it again.

Excuse me, but I must be very clear, you don't know what you're talking about. The video optimizer in our Tab S 5e is hidden in the software because Samsung did it thinking of offering us a worse screen and thus favor the Amoled Tab S 7+. Listening to you is stepping on eggs in a chicken coop xD. Activate the optimizer and enjoy the excellent amoled and calm screen, you will not get burned by using the optimizer (all the tabs have it, their phones also) By the way, my Tab S 8.4 from 2014 still has the screen in perfect condition review using high brightness as I like to watch series or movies ...
I found this option while running Android 10 but now since the 11 update, I can't find this option in action launcher or nova launcher... what am I missing? Thanks

I'm on stock android 11.
Stock Android 11 here, I found the "hdreffectsettingsactivity" using this Nova Launcher method. Problem is that there isn't any buttons to toggle or options to select. It just displays a sentence about using Normal Screen brightness or something. Is this a dead end for Android 11? I could care less about 11. I was watching a series on Netflix with a lot of night/dark scenes and those scenes were straight up unwatchable.
(for anyone looking for this, it wasn't under "Optimizer Video," it was further down listed as one of the "Settings," read the fine print.)

Can you try YouTube app, search at YouTube for:
Real 4K HDR Dolby Test ultrahd movie for 4k
oled tv
Then when it starts playing go full screen. Does HDR automatically turn on?
It does on my galaxy s8 but only in full screen. The user interface is very bright too but when leaving full screen video in YouTube automatically disables again.
If it works than other applications can do the same.
I want to disable HDR since I didabled video optimizer, I still can't block YouTube going HDR in HDR movies.
So actually we have the opposite problem.
In your current situation normal video is not HDR.

So android 11 is rubbish because you can't use the video optimizer and Netflix looks so bad? Have you managed to find a solution?
