SD card keeps getting corrupted on Samsung Charge - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wanted to ask before I RMA my Lexar 32GB Class 10 Micro SD card.
I have this card in my Charge and every week or so now it goes corrupt. I hear of people changing the cache, but I have not rooted the device.
Is there a "fix" to prevent this when not rooted?
I wonder what the problem is, if I go to a slower card or smaller capacity, will it be avoided?
Tired of loosing all my data on the card each time.

Do you format the card every time?

Yes, each time It has to be formatted to work again.
Somebody posted on a review on Amazon that it is an Android issue with cache? That the cards are good.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago where my phone kept telling me to format the card over and over. You don't want to root your phone?

I was holding off being a little nervous of bricking if I rooted. Never really saw much that rooting gave me to make it worth it. But if it's what it takes to fix this, I might.

Don't blame you, I was terrified of rooting my phone after bricking the last one to the point of no return because I had no idea what I was doing. There are some awesome posts on here though that give detailed guides for whatever phone you have.
There is a bunch of benefits too for rooting. Like for example there are tweaks that can make your phone run smoother and save lots of battery (don't know what phone you have but I'd think they would work for you), but that's just one in, well, a lot.
As for your sd card, if you don't wanna root your phone permanently maybe you can root, fix, and then un-root? But I'm not sure if that would work or not.
This place and a couple of (meaning a lot of) google searches taught me a lot, so look around! I always combine different solutions to fix my specific problems

SD card problem (not recogized on phone or pc)

Relatively new to XDA, so your patience is appreciated if I'm asking a complete noob question, but I have searched and come up empty. Basically, the thread title says it all. Neither my Eris nor my laptop recognize that an SD card is present. Now, I would figure the solution would simply be to reformat the card, but how can I reformat if I can't even get either device to recognize it?
Again, I'm sorry if this is a noob issue. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Anyone
The only time this has ever happened to me was when my microsd had a small crack in it. I had to bend it a little to be able to tell if it was there or not, but the crack made the entire card useless. If you don't have a crack or anything like that, i'm not sure what else it could be... sorry.
I found a program to help me out with this problem. Took me a couple hours of research to find it, but hopefully it'll work just fine.
So, did it work?
No it didn't work. I know what caused my problem, though. My cousin (it's actually her Eris) is only 9 and didn't know that you had to unmount the card or power down the phone before removing it. I don't know how many times she did it, but I'm pretty certain that's what corrupted the card. I've given her one of mine until I can get it sorted out, so I'm still open to suggestions.

Tmobile gs3 has problem w/ external storage, im rooted so cant return it? I need Help

Alright guys, I noticed today that my Titanium Backups aren't on my mount/extsd storage, and I tried to change the backup location under preferences, but it wouldn't allow me. While checking my sd card I noticed the only file stored on it is my pictures? I tried downloading apps to sd in an attempt to move titanium backup, and that's when I realized I have a serious issue I believe. I was given a message when apps to sd opened that said, "this device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated"? Whatever the hell that means by emulated I don't know? The sd card was working in the last phone I used it in.
Biggest problem is that I'm rooted, so I can't return it under warranty! At least I can't to my knowledge. I'm in serious need of some help here, I purchased the phone at the T mobile retail store, so I don't know if I can sneak it past them somehow, or if I should maybe just (it hurts to say it) brick it on purpose, and pull the old" it just shut off and wouldn't turn back on" routine?
Please guys, any and all advice will be much appreciated!
Before doing anything drastic, have you thought about maybe reformatting the SD card first? If that doesn't work then try another SD card (they do go bad you know). It sounds like something that should be easy to fix. Whatever you do please don't brick it on purpose. It's not anyone's fault that your device is now acting up after rooting it. At least do them a solid and ODIN back to stock, then try to return it if that's the case.
Hi,
You should read this thread. It should shed some light on your external SD card problem and provide a couple of methods to get around it.

Yes I did format it to no avail, and I'm headed home soon where I'll try a different sd card. I don't want to brick the device, and I've had to unroot and return a phone before because of a hardware issue with the screen that wasn't my fault. The problem with doing that in this situation is that I don't believe there's a way to unroot it and go back to the stock recovery or reset the binary flash counter. As far as you saying it's not anyone's fault, it sure is my friend and it's not mine! I had a Galaxy s4g that wouldn't read an sd card two days after I got it & I had to return it. So, as far as being no one's fault, not true... It would be Samsungs fault, and rooting it had nothing to do with it. If I broke a device because of my own foolishness or stupidity, I would ABSOLUTELY NEVER try to exchange it! The entire basis of my spirituality is based on karma and I would suck it up & pay for my mistake but maintain my peace of mind. This however, I am not at fault for, and I shouldn't be responsible for faulty hardware just because I obtained root access.

Okay I've read the links and this is very odd??? I need to hear from someone with the gs3 that they've also discover that they're phone recognizes & reads the sd card, but will not allow apps to write to it. PLEASE, someone check this and help me out here!
I REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT IF ALL Gs3's DO THIS, OR IF I NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO RETURN TO STOCK & EXCHANGE IT?
Sorry for the frustration, but I just spent a heck of a lot of money here, and this is a very aggravating problem....
My TB backs up to the ext SD. I had the same problem you did. Too bad I can't actually remember what I did. :crying:
When you go into TB and try to select storage location...nothing comes up but the internal?
I think I manually moved the TB folder from the internal to the external...then went back into TB to select the location...then selected the Detect button...and it came up with a list of folders that I could choose.
It went something like that. Hope that sheds some light...(sorry I cant remember exactly)
FYI...the ext SD folder is under mnt/extSD...or something like that.
I forget to mention something else guys. I am able to copy & paste my Titanium Backups as well as any other files to the sd card. So, the phone recognizes it, and it will write to external sd if I manually copy things there, but it will not allow any third party apps to write to external sd? I also cannot move apps to the sd card? This is a HUGE pain in the ass! I bought the 16gb model because that's all the retailer I my area had, so the sd card is a necessity for me. If I'm downloading torrents or other large files this could be a problem. I'm really wondering if this isn't just my phone?
It'd be great if someone here with the skills could port this mod for us.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433436
It basically makes the phone think that the external is the internal...and all files downloaded from the browsers or whatever app that doesn't allow sd access...to go directly to external.

Sorry nothing! THANK YOU! I was like 3/4 of the way to that idea, I had already copied the file, but I was just thinking maybe if I deleted the internal file, maybe now it will follow the one I copied to the mount/extsdstorage? I can't thank you enough for just confirming that this isn't a problem specific to my model. I think that this problem should be explained to everyone & stickied. This is a seriously confusing situation. Ppl who don't root or come to XDA won't have any idea why they're music, videos, or anything from third party apps aren't going to their sd cards? Some ppl may not even realize it? I don't know if it's been mentioned in another thread here yet, but I couldn't find anything in our forums about it, and I've been trying to figure out what was going on all day. I still don't understand what the hell it meant about emulated storage?

All stock Samsung Galaxies S3 do this. Google in their infinite wisdom is locking down apps so they can not write to an external card that can infect other devices.
Problem is we all want more control with our external cards and there are a lot of unhappy campers with this new "feature". Gamers are especially concerned because they can not install their games to the external card to free up more space.
This is a real strong reason to buy the 32gb model and not the 16gb. One could take the stance that they are forcing us to pay a higher premium for our storage when we purchase the phone.
As I said you can do the work around with directory bind until:
1. A dev comes up with a a patch
2. You install a custom Rom like Cm9 that has patched out this security policy.
Never mind... Now that I'm using better keywords to describe the problem, and searching outside of just the US variants forum, I'm finding threads... I feel like an idiot now! Some folks are talking as if this is better? I don't see it though. I did a nandroid after root, and it only left me with around 8gb or so with my apps installed. I know its faster memory than an sd card, but it's kind of a pain. I hope I never need to download anything bigger than 8gb... Doubtful ill need my phone for anything that big though.
Sorry for freaking out and making a big deal out of this issue, but I thought my device was defective, and I wasn't using good search terms. I should have been able to figure this out without cluttering things with a two Page thread.

Yes, I really wish I could take it back and pay the difference for the 32gb, but with being rooted its really not feasible. I was browsing XDA on my phone also, and I didn't even catch the link in your first post, I was only reading the links I your second post, lol. I really feel like a dummy here since my question was almost immediately answered. Also, the browser can act a little wonky sometimes on XDA. As soon as I made it home to my desktop, I was looking over the thread & knocking my forehead against the screen!
Yeah...but if someone could modify that script for our phones...(I personally use it on my Transformer...and til this day...has been perfect.)

Actually you are bringing up a valid concern and one of the first to do it in this section of the US version of the S3, my hat off to you!
It would be good idea to have a stickied thread in general that addresses this. That way ppl will be well aware of how to work around it. And yes, a patch for this would be great, because some may prefer things this way, and alot will prefer the previous standards. I for one don't like this one bit!
Put a stock rom on it and go into the store. Tell them you're having issues, they can order one on their end and send it out to you.
I would know. I worked there.

Unrooted Evo 3D (Sprint CDMA) not recognizing SD card after ICS update - how to fix?

i updated my phone to ICS about an hour ago and since then, my phone keeps rebooting and doesn't seem to recognize the micro SD card (the same one I've used in the phone since I got it on release day). The card is listed in the Storage menu in settings with the correct total and free space, but it doesn't recognize it otherwise. Trying to unmount it does nothing, no pictures are showing up in my gallery and the apps that are on my card are showing on my home screens with the default Android logo instead of the actual app logos. Anyone know how to fix this? The phone is not (and never has been) rooted.
The phone is working better without the card, but I can't view texts. It just says Loading... and the message never comes up.
Is there something I have to do to get ICS to recognize the micro SD card? Or do I have to do a factory reset and/or format the card (two things I don't want to have to do)?
Having the same issues here. I'm wondering if it could be something on the SD card itself that could be causing the problem. Like an app that is installed on the card or something. Thinking about clearing the card and trying it again.
Do a factory reset. With OTA updates an unrooted phones, a lot of people have problems. This is why rooted users wipe everything (factory reset) when flashing roms, because updating rom's without wiping usually causes random issues like this.

That's what I did last night (formatted the SD card) and my phone hasn't rebooted since then. Probably an app on the card that wasn't working with ICS.
I finally found it!
After hours of looking it up, i found the biggest issue I have ever had with my phone. Maybe second, after my down volume button broke (didnt fix that, ICS kinda did). Or maybe third, after my Micro SD card crashed, and when I went to repair it, it somehow wasnt the one the phone comes with...
Lets get on with this. I have waited so long, and thinking that they had a whole year to develop a perfect update, they screw it up.
I want to know why the hell the Micro SD keeps crashing my phone. I try to transfer the stuff, but it doesnt allow it. Should I buy an adapter and transfer the stuff to my pc? What will happen to all my game data? How do I restore that? Do I factory reset the phone only, the SD card, or both? I really need a perfect explanation what to do, and as much technological I am, I dont want to mess anything up.
And another thing, which might be irrelevant, but those other Googlers or HTC EVO 3D owners might have this same issue. Why is there a thick red border around the screen of my phone ( sometimes, it flashes periodically). I think its a developer option, but im not 100% sure. I really hate buggy software.
Oh, and if you guys didnt notice, or it might be just for me, but my computer doesnt detect my pc, and even the red charging light takes 5 minutes to turn on. If HTC doesnt do anything about this, im going to root, and believe me, I tried.
If HTC cant, help you guys can. Happy typing your response!

You don't factory reset the SD card, you format it. It's worth a shot, but if the card is bad it won't help.

ExtSD card causing phone instability?

Hey I am trying to figure out if one it is possible for an SD card to cause my phone to become unstable (like spontenously rebooting, heating up, etc), i think the answer is yes as I have tried using the phone for a few days with and without the card and it does indeed seem more stable without the card but its less clear about if its the card or whats on the card. I tried formatting the card and thought at first that it was more stable but then it seemed to start acting up again (I can't sit and watch it all day and sometimes its not obvious that it has restarted, sometimes it just shuts down). I have also tried different versions of RR, tinkered with neartrom (not long enough to be sure though) but still stability issues.
Is there a way to see If my card is someway corrupted? or If the phone is just not liking this card or any cards? A friend let me use their card for awhile and my phone was still acting up (rebooting, freezing, overheating). I prefer to to figure out exactly what the problem is before I fork out the money for a new card; it seems illogical that a sdcard in general should make a phone act up like this but I am running out of ideas (going out and getting a new phone would be even more painful than getting a new sdcard so I am really hoping to figure this out as it seems to run ok when no card is inserted).
btw, I the card is a sandisk ultra 64gb microsdxc card, its worked for like 2 years (I stored music and backups on it mainly, most the r/w stuff was from daily podcasts).

Hey, I have i only tried Neatrom instead of RR but had the similar issues with Neatrom and that was a pretty barebones installation, I didn't have additional software installed at the time. Though to contradict myself, if I had to finger two possible culprits it might be poweramp and doggcatcher but I am not sure because I have not been able to duplicate instability (a outright crash is one thing but freezing, random reboots, etc is a but harder to follow).
any luck on your side?

VS985 35B Sd Card Help

New to the forum, I did a search but came up empty, I have a rooted LG G# 35B rooted stock rom. it has a 128gb samsung sd card I had it for at least 6 months, no issues, last week it started unmounting my SD card by itself and unless I restart the phone it wont mount again, I did a factory reset and formated the card 3 times then mounted the card on the phone again and same issue, it will not go away also starts crating and deleting .txt files one called SNP_LOG .txt because of the modified nature of the phone I cannot do the OTA I have the 5.1.1 lollipop, also I have put on an 8G SD card and a 32GB same issue.
Try downgrading via the 10B TOT to try to verify if the problem is software or hardware. By your description I'm wondering of software but that's just a guess.

My wife's stock phone had this issue on 48A. I downgraded it to 10B and then took OTA's back up to 35B. It still had the issue. Went back to 10B and still had the issue. IIRC there is a post about this issue on the main LG G3 forum in case you are interested.
I have the insurance on my devices so 3 replacement devices later she got a phone that works again. Good luck!
I'm on 46A and had a similar issue with a Samsung 64 GB card I have been using for about a year. Recently it started unmounting and remounting out of nowhere. Eventually, the phone claimed that it was corrupted. I opened up a file viewer and it seemed as though it had reformatted it. Since I backed it up at the start of all this, I put it in my computer to restore the data. However, all of the files that were on there before were still there and in-tact. I tried a 16 GB card I had sitting around to no avail. After doing some Googling, it seems that these symptoms are apparently a relatively common hardware issue with the G3 (which sucks, because this phone was still doing great after 2 years).
TL;DR - you may want to try different SD cards if you have any. That will help narrow down the issue and whether or not it's software or hardware. If I find any more info on the similar issue I'm having, I'll post it here.
Has anyone tried something like deoxit on the sd card when they start going bezerk?
I wonder if the card or the slot contacts get dirty or microscopic corrosion.
I use deoxit on alot of contacts and it works well.
Brian
still cannot get it to work, also I keep getting this messages for creating an snp_log.txt and then deleting the file I search for it and erase it and it keeps doing it, also a DelMe file 1-21 keeps pooping up
running lg g3 35b-xdeb sdcard formated exfat, I had this issue happening 6 months ago with a 64gb sandisk card till the card become "unwriteable" to any device or pc. I can no longer write to the card and it is readable but pretty much useless. I replaced with a 128gb sandisk card and all went well. Problem is starting again. everytime I reboot the phone and use a passcode to log in, it unmounts and mounts once. I removed xposed and many other apps still to no avail. I did read somewhere that the card needs a "label" on the volume for lollipop. .I did noticed my card was unlabled. I placed a label on my sdcard but it still is happening. I have also read that backing up the card and doing a complete "non quick" format my help out. doing a backup on my card now. let ya know the results. I did place another 128gb card in my phone and the problem still existed. I tried formatting another card to ext4 but it still was happening. I do feel my issue is software related.
incase your unsure if this is happening to you all you need to do is launch the camera app and it will ask you to "save photos to sdcard" whenever it unmounts the sdcard.
Does anyone know any log files i can examine? since my phone can be rebooted and sit for hours and then when I log in with a passcode it unmounts perhaps I can see which app if it is an app that may be doing this. I am on lollipop but I did run the sdcard fix for kit kat on it. maybe a script still exists. I really like this phone and would love to sovle this. I'm wondering if it is an issue with the internal memory that is causing an unmounting and remounting of volumes. would love to solve this.
update:
So I tried backup the sdcard to a hardrive using windows 10. kept failing on files. I decided to try backing up using a linux-ubuntu dist. when it would fail on the files it would actually unmount the whole drive. can't remember the error exactly something to do with no enpoint. I started select directories one by one to copy. I came to an assumuption. the only directories with corrupt files were files that I copied from the internal memory to the sdcard. my tool of choice used to be using es-file explorer. I hate making blind assumptions especially if i'm wrong but that was definitely a common denominator.
So I kept getting "sdcard unmounted" and "sdcard mounted" after reboot and login. I decided to do a full wipe but not before doing a backup of my rom. (just for testing purposes and data backup) I tried nandroiding to the internal memory which had 18gig left and it kept failing saying not enough space. so I backed up to external_sd which worked fine. I then decided to do a format of internal memory from twrp. restored backup and an earlier backup and still mounting issues. I then installed latest stable of cm12.1 and it... worked. don't know why but I decided to install xdabeb 3.1.1 6.0 mm stock image. wow does it work great. all my needs were met. xposed for 6.0 sdk23, tether, g3 toolbox mmbeta. awesome slim down stock. no sdcard mount issues with original card. I actually think the external_sd mount issue is actually a byproduct of an issue with the internal memory. and I believe cm12.1 install might have done some kind of fsck(filesytemcheck) my pipe dream? my incorrect guess? prolly. give it a try. cm12.1 installs so quickly it can't hurt.
WARNING!
DO NOT FORMAT INTERNAL MEMORY IF YOU HAVE NOT COPIED /TWRP BACKUP FOLDER FROM INTERNAL MEMORY TO A SDCARD OR USBDRIVE IF YOU NEED IT.
you were warned (sorry bout the caps....felt it was needed)
I'm seeing this problem as of yesterday, and it started after I took the 49A OTA, but I do not believe that was the issue. I'm wondering if it's more because the phone is almost 2 years old? I don't take the SIM nor the SD Card out at all. I did drop my phone last week. It was in a case and it landed flat on it's back, but I wonder if that still might have caused an issue and it just happen to coincidentally rear it's ugly head yesterday when I took the 49A OTA? 10B and all subsequent OTAs exhibit the same issue.
Going to take it into Cell Phone Repair today and get an estimate to see how much it will cost to get it fixed. Would like them to fix the USB port as well as it appears to be loose and I have numerous connect/disconnect issues with the PC so I have to be VERY careful when flashing so as to not bump or jostle the cable or phone while connected to the PC.
Cell Phone Repair gave me a quote to replace the SIM/SD Card slot of around $90 USD. They did say there was a 50% chance that the phone might not turn on if they do the work and that would be the end of it. I'm going to leave it alone.
Now, one thing I have noticed is, the card ejects usually when I launch an app. From what I can tell, it only appears to happen once for the app. Yesterday, the Facebook app seemed to do it. Today, my Twitter app did it.
I'm wondering if it's due to permissions? I wonder if the OTA changed something in regards to the access allowed to the external SD card and that's causing it to eject the card, and then remount it with the proper permissions? Usually, it seems to take a bit of time to remount, but it usually does, and then from that point, I don't see it happen for that app anymore.
Any ideas on this?
UPDATE: I just launched Twitter again and it didn't eject the card. I launched Facebook as well and same thing, no dismount. But I then launched Google+ app and it ejected the SD card. Still waiting to have it remount the SD card. Like I said, sometimes it's quick. Other times, it takes some time to remount the card. But this seems to be the issue and I'm wondering if that's normal? It happens with any SD card I put in.

My wife's SIM slot stopped working about a month ago. I got an RMA on LG's site to send it to them for a repair quote. They wanted about $75 to repair or $150 for a complete refurb. We didn't have it repaired and then sent it back. We're hoping to buy two new non-contract unlocked phones in the near future. Probably the HTC 10 Unlocked or the Google Pixel XL 128 GB, but that latter isn't too likely given the very high price combined with its unavailability.
My wife is unfortunately using her old flip phone for now.
Mainly wanted you to know LG's quote as I'd be more comfortable having LG repair it than someone else, I just didn't want to put more money into phones that I'll be looking to replace soon anyway, and with the Swappa selling price of the G3 being only $50 more than that repair cost.

Thanks. $150 is what Verizon quoted me for a replacement G3. My issue is, I do not want to buy another phone. I actually love this phone. I'm comfortable with it and it does what I need. And with one daughter in college and the other getting ready to start college next year, I need to save money and I do NOT want to be paying more money a month for a new phone. With this phone just having gotten off contract, by VZW bill dropped $20/month which is nice. That's $240 saved over the course of a year. Might seem like peanuts to some, but for me, every little bit helps.
I've flashed back to 10b again to test out the SD card because it's really annoying that right after the 49A OTA, it started happening. I just can't see that it was already bad but never showed, or that the 49A OTA caused the issue to show up. I'm just wondering if there's something with the 49A OTA that causes this issue. Other people have reported to me that they experienced the exact same issue as me with the SD card constantly ejecting. Maybe the slot IS bad, but it's not as sensitive to it except with the 49A.
I had thought I saw the same issue on 10b, but now for the past couple of hours, I've ran on 10b and haven't seen one issue with the SD card. So, I'm now slowly going up the OTA chain until I can get back to 48A where it last worked without any issues and see what happens there.
I have verified that the SD card is fine. Or at least, it appears so. I copied all the files off of it, did a format, chkdsk, etc and nothing comes up bad about the card.
So, the drama continues on with my phone!
Well, it's been confirmed via another user where vzw told him the latest 49a ota is not compatible with our phone in some instances in regards to the SD card. Last night I flashed back to 10b and I'm back on 48a now and no SD card issues. Zero. I've been going over 12 hours now and not a single unmount. Thanks Verizon. Nice testing. ?
I'm curious if those on 49a not expediting issues with their SD cards if they are on the K or non-k model of the g3?
