Hey I am trying to figure out if one it is possible for an SD card to cause my phone to become unstable (like spontenously rebooting, heating up, etc), i think the answer is yes as I have tried using the phone for a few days with and without the card and it does indeed seem more stable without the card but its less clear about if its the card or whats on the card. I tried formatting the card and thought at first that it was more stable but then it seemed to start acting up again (I can't sit and watch it all day and sometimes its not obvious that it has restarted, sometimes it just shuts down). I have also tried different versions of RR, tinkered with neartrom (not long enough to be sure though) but still stability issues.
Is there a way to see If my card is someway corrupted? or If the phone is just not liking this card or any cards? A friend let me use their card for awhile and my phone was still acting up (rebooting, freezing, overheating). I prefer to to figure out exactly what the problem is before I fork out the money for a new card; it seems illogical that a sdcard in general should make a phone act up like this but I am running out of ideas (going out and getting a new phone would be even more painful than getting a new sdcard so I am really hoping to figure this out as it seems to run ok when no card is inserted).
btw, I the card is a sandisk ultra 64gb microsdxc card, its worked for like 2 years (I stored music and backups on it mainly, most the r/w stuff was from daily podcasts).

Hey, I have i only tried Neatrom instead of RR but had the similar issues with Neatrom and that was a pretty barebones installation, I didn't have additional software installed at the time. Though to contradict myself, if I had to finger two possible culprits it might be poweramp and doggcatcher but I am not sure because I have not been able to duplicate instability (a outright crash is one thing but freezing, random reboots, etc is a but harder to follow).
any luck on your side?

I've been running the leaked 3.16.651.0 ROM on my Sprint Mogul for a little less than month now. A problem I've seen (only twice) is that the microSD card just 'disappears'. Both native file explorer and Resco file explorer say it isn't there when I try to navigate to it. Problem is resolved with a soft reset.
I don't run programs from the card so I wouldn't notice it is missing unless I'm specifically working with files on it, which isn't too often. The fact that I've seen this twice (out of maybe 20 times working with the card) just had me wondering if anyone else has seen this. I'm using the 8GB Sandisk SDHC card. Since I just got the phone, and updated to the ROM about the same time I got the card, I have no experience with the card running on stock ROM
I've never had that problem (leaked or official ROM), but I seem to remember my old 6700 had issues like that when I installed voicecommand.
you should do a search cause alot of people with dcd rom based on the new rom had the same issue i think you have to not use encryption or something
Try installing this:

It's supposed to help your phone function with the larger Micro SD HC cards.

correct me if im rong, i thought the mogul supported up to 8gb so why would you need the patch
Originally, it wasn't supposed to. It would only support up to 2GB. Coincidentally, it works, but will have it's days that it won't. This is to ensure that it works constantly.
I am running M$ Voice Command (1.60.4622.0) and did see this on rare occasion on my old 6700 too, but didn't investigate back then. I have not turned on encryption. There hasn't been a problem recognizing the 8GB capacity, just with it completely disappearing. It isn't a large problem, but even one disappearance seems odd.
I'll try collecting some baseline stats on how often it is disappearing by going to it regularly, and then try suggestions to see if things change for the better.
Any suggestions on places I should look beyond using file browsers (stock, Resco) and start>settings>device information>memory>storage card to see if the card is being recognized? I'll also try card re-insert vs. soft boot when it is gone to see if that brings it back. Thanks for the suggestions

i seen ppl say it works fine with 4 gb idk about 8 gb
Ran fine yesterday, saw problem today (last soft reset 1d2h ago). Additional details on symptoms on this particular failure: File browser: sees top level folders on storage card. In some of these lower level folders and files appear, in some not. Nothing consistent with respect to levels down where things start disappearing but I couldn't get to any folders or files more than two levels down. start>settings>system>memory>storage card shows capacity of card as 7782.5MB (correct), same amount as in use (incorrect), and 0 free. Popping the card out and in resolved the problem. Next time it fails I'll see what Pocket Mechanic can see with respect to the card when it goes out.
I did a search on 'storage card disappears'. Seems this is a problem folks experience across phones and WM5/WM6 PPCs. May even be the card. Didn't come across any explanations of the problem or fixes (some registry hacks related to thinking it is a new or old card, that were later discounted in the thread, but even if true, the new/old card isn't the problem as I'd still expect to see files if it were a new card). e.g., http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1138270. From what I found searching, its something I live with for now. I'm pretty sure it isn't anything specific to 3.16.651.0 ...
I dont know if I am the only one, but although I love this ROM and I find it perfect for my needs I just cant get around the fact that it destroys my 8GB microSDHC class 6 card by encrypting it. I have formated it endless times with the panasonic formatting tool it becomes usable, I put my files in it, it work for a few hours at best and the the phone hangs. usually using Total Commander, its interesting that it starts slowly, like 1 ever 5 secnds, showing my folders (I guess this is where the encryption begins. And then everything I try to open gives an error 18, data moved or something. Encryption desibled in setting, power administration disables it does that regardless.
After it does that if I soft reset or restart the phone the card will not show up anymore, either in the total comander, or file manager or any program that trys to access the card. After that if i put the sd back in my pc it shows everything just fine except an Encfitlog.menc file or something like that has being created. Its only that file thats all, no extensions have been modified no files moved nothing. And the computer reads and opens everything just fine. Sometimes if I delete the file the phone will read it again mst times it dosnt.
I know many think it can be bad SD card but the fact is that the computer reads it just fine and intrestingly enough so does the phone, for example i can install endless numbers of roms using the sd method. Even with the menc file on it the bootloader reads the card perfectly and flashes the RAPLPH.IMG everytime no erros. To me that means all hardware is working fine.
WHAT CAN IT BE????????????? PLEASE HELP I READ FOR HOURS DIFFERENT THREADS AND NOTHING HELPED. O LOVE THIS ROM BUT I NEED THE SD AS WELL
if anyone has any idea I would be extremely grarful!!!!!!
was the card properly inserted? The card slot is spring loaded. Try removing the card by pushing it in all the way, the card should pops out. That's when you know that you've inserted the card properly. If the card was inserted correctly, the easiest way to find out now is buying or borrowing a different card.
Yes of course, like I stated i can flash roms form the same sd card, it works for a while and then it just goes bananas. It seems to be a fairly common issue I just thought some one else might have figured out what triggers this error. Still no permanet solution.
Have you tried the second suggestion?
O tried the card in other phones and it works which is stait up wierd. Havent gotten around other cards to try yet. but is wierd i doubt its hardware related cause it reads the rom images perfectly to flash them. and doubt its the rom becuase i tried like 6 already ranging from stock 6.1 to heavily tweaked 6.5s yeilding always thesame results. its like they just dont get along. wierd. will look for another sd to try on my fuze and see how that goes
Try a different brand of Card

I too use NRG roms and have flashed them from AS and my SD. I have a Sandisk 8Gb card that I brought when I got my Raph and have never had a problem. I can only strongly recommend that you get another brand of card and check the results. Maybe there is something funky about the way they talk to your brand of SD card.
Check on the HTC site. I think they list compatible memory cards. I have a similar issue with a 16G card I bought. Sometimes it's all there and sometimes it's not...no rhyme or reason to it. I just went back to the 4GB for now haven't had the time or incentive to go further yet.
i guess its just that!!! I mean it is a very cheap card, Generic from Microcenter. But the on and off thing is what confuses me. I would thing it would be a work or no work thing and not a sometimes works some times it dosnt senarrio. An I tried the card on a Kaiser, Titan, and CDMA Raphael and works. And for certain things it works on this Phone as well. I noted one more thing. If the phone never goes to sleep it dosnt corrup the card. But as it goes to sleep when i press the power button it hangs for a second and pufff!!! card gone. But if i plug it to the computer via USB it will recognize that theres a card it just wont show it. And if i plug it in the computer with SD adapter is all there plus the forsaken menc file. But the whole sleeping thing leads me to thing it might be a power management issues of how the OS handles the memory voltage on sleep and resume. Could it be?????????
WIERD!!!! I guess the only OTHER logical explanaition (which dosnt totaly stasify me, THEY JUST DONT UNDESTAND EACH OTHER)
Will try to get a secondary card and post resulsts.
I wanted to ask before I RMA my Lexar 32GB Class 10 Micro SD card.
I have this card in my Charge and every week or so now it goes corrupt. I hear of people changing the cache, but I have not rooted the device.
Is there a "fix" to prevent this when not rooted?
I wonder what the problem is, if I go to a slower card or smaller capacity, will it be avoided?
Tired of loosing all my data on the card each time.
Do you format the card every time?
Yes, each time It has to be formatted to work again.
Somebody posted on a review on Amazon that it is an Android issue with cache? That the cards are good.
I had a similar problem a few weeks ago where my phone kept telling me to format the card over and over. You don't want to root your phone?
I was holding off being a little nervous of bricking if I rooted. Never really saw much that rooting gave me to make it worth it. But if it's what it takes to fix this, I might.
Don't blame you, I was terrified of rooting my phone after bricking the last one to the point of no return because I had no idea what I was doing. There are some awesome posts on here though that give detailed guides for whatever phone you have.
There is a bunch of benefits too for rooting. Like for example there are tweaks that can make your phone run smoother and save lots of battery (don't know what phone you have but I'd think they would work for you), but that's just one in, well, a lot.
As for your sd card, if you don't wanna root your phone permanently maybe you can root, fix, and then un-root? But I'm not sure if that would work or not.
This place and a couple of (meaning a lot of) google searches taught me a lot, so look around! I always combine different solutions to fix my specific problems
i updated my phone to ICS about an hour ago and since then, my phone keeps rebooting and doesn't seem to recognize the micro SD card (the same one I've used in the phone since I got it on release day). The card is listed in the Storage menu in settings with the correct total and free space, but it doesn't recognize it otherwise. Trying to unmount it does nothing, no pictures are showing up in my gallery and the apps that are on my card are showing on my home screens with the default Android logo instead of the actual app logos. Anyone know how to fix this? The phone is not (and never has been) rooted.
The phone is working better without the card, but I can't view texts. It just says Loading... and the message never comes up.
Is there something I have to do to get ICS to recognize the micro SD card? Or do I have to do a factory reset and/or format the card (two things I don't want to have to do)?
Having the same issues here. I'm wondering if it could be something on the SD card itself that could be causing the problem. Like an app that is installed on the card or something. Thinking about clearing the card and trying it again.
Do a factory reset. With OTA updates an unrooted phones, a lot of people have problems. This is why rooted users wipe everything (factory reset) when flashing roms, because updating rom's without wiping usually causes random issues like this.

That's what I did last night (formatted the SD card) and my phone hasn't rebooted since then. Probably an app on the card that wasn't working with ICS.
I finally found it!
After hours of looking it up, i found the biggest issue I have ever had with my phone. Maybe second, after my down volume button broke (didnt fix that, ICS kinda did). Or maybe third, after my Micro SD card crashed, and when I went to repair it, it somehow wasnt the one the phone comes with...
Lets get on with this. I have waited so long, and thinking that they had a whole year to develop a perfect update, they screw it up.
I want to know why the hell the Micro SD keeps crashing my phone. I try to transfer the stuff, but it doesnt allow it. Should I buy an adapter and transfer the stuff to my pc? What will happen to all my game data? How do I restore that? Do I factory reset the phone only, the SD card, or both? I really need a perfect explanation what to do, and as much technological I am, I dont want to mess anything up.
And another thing, which might be irrelevant, but those other Googlers or HTC EVO 3D owners might have this same issue. Why is there a thick red border around the screen of my phone ( sometimes, it flashes periodically). I think its a developer option, but im not 100% sure. I really hate buggy software.
Oh, and if you guys didnt notice, or it might be just for me, but my computer doesnt detect my pc, and even the red charging light takes 5 minutes to turn on. If HTC doesnt do anything about this, im going to root, and believe me, I tried.
If HTC cant, help you guys can. Happy typing your response!

Well if the card is bad/failed, you probably lost that. Backups are very important in today's world.

You don't factory reset the SD card, you format it. It's worth a shot, but if the card is bad it won't help.
Hi,
Over the last week, I've had two SD cards die on me:
The first card I've had since I got my i9300 S3 (13 months). Prior to last week, it worked flawlessly (KomputerBay 32GB class 6). Then suddenly after rebooting I see an SD card damaged error. After trying chkdsk and fsck it looks like the card is certainly damaged but was able to recover some of the files.
Thinking it was just bad luck and the card dying, I purchased a 32gb class 10 Lexar card brand new. In the meantime, I used a 4GB Samsung SD card that came with the S3 for approximately 5 days and it worked fine with no errors or corruption.
With the new card, I copied over all my files, music etc. After an overnight using the phone, some calling etc. I rebooted the phone only to get the same error. Windows didn't even recognise the card let alone recover it. fsck likewise. Did a full format again and restored some files from original backup, it's been less than 24 hours and so far so good but I am not ready to relax just yet.
I'm really baffled as to what could be causing it as the card seems only to fail after a reboot. Prior to then, the card displays as mounted in system settings and files are accessible. The only other strange thing I've noticed is that when playing music/podcasts and turning off the screen the playback jitters for a moment or two before returning to normal. This started quite recently. I'm using UltimaROM 13.0 at the moment with Boeffla kernel. Have disabled all SD related optimisations and have no CPU or GPU overclocking or undervolting. I've been using Ultima for months with no major config changes recently.
I'm at the point now where I am almost scared to reboot! Last time I rebooted I unmounted the SD just in case. The only other possible difference in behaviour is that as I was travelling I had my phone on charge all night and although I can't be 100% sure rebooted with the phone charging (though again, its not the first time I've rebooted while charging). I've googled this far and wide and most SD related issues seem to be caused by the card randomly unmounting. I've never seen this in my instance.
Any ideas on what this might be or what I could do to troubleshoot further? I don't want to restore to stock, unroot, reset counters etc. and return to Samsung unless I can be at least reasonably confident its a hardware issue.
Thanks,

Do you mean http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906058 ? If so, yes though the key difference for me is that my card doesn't seem to randomly unmount like most reports indicate. Also, it's very recent. Don't also see any possible solutions in there unless I'm missing something?
