Hi,
Like many of you you are not able to change the Audio settings in Service mode on your Galaxy S II after updating to 2.3.4+ or after updating to ICS. I for one need to re-enable WB AMR, which significantly increases your voice call quality. Some others like to change the setting to increase call volume outgoing or receiving.
Seems like Samsung removed this menu to prevent users from filing warranty claims after mucking with their audio settings.
Can someone please post their Service Mode APK that allows you to enter into the [5] Audio category?
If you were unaware, you can enter service mode on the Galaxy S II by dialing *#*#197328640#*#*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 118051 Mar 1 21:52 /system/app/serviceModeApp.apk
Still no one ?

This one is taken from a leaked ICS ROM (XWLP3), but it may work.

Hmm, I was able to replace the application no problem but it won't run. The system /system/data/packages.xml contains information and signatures for the the file.

Are you sure that the serviceModeApp.apk file is sitting in the system/app directory? If it is just saved to your phone and installed normally, it will appear in data/app directory. Use something like RootExplorer to move it to the system/app directory and reboot, and try it again.
Chris.
I did try to install it. I actually removed the references from Packages.xml without any luck.
When trying to install via ADB I get the following error:
INSTALL_FAILED_SHARED_USER_INCOMPATIBLE

did you get any joy with this? I'm looking to do the same - the call volume on headset is ridiculously low and is too frustrating.

Last night I was checking out Cyanogen's web site and I came across this:
Bluetooth Voice Commands Missing in CM6?
Hello,
One of the newer features that I liked so far in CM-6 was the ability to long press my bluetooth headset action button which resulted in a voice telling me to say a command. This was much better than the original phone voice dialer, which requires manual intervention to pick a number from its list of guesses after you speak, and which offers no voice prompt to let you know when it's ready.
Well, as of upgrading to CM-6.0 from the 8-25 nightly, the bluetooth/headset dialer is gone and when I long press my bluetooth headset button It's back to the old phone voice dialer which requires manual intervention to place a call and offers no voice prompt. How do I get the bluetooth dialer back?
I have attached the 09SEP-VoiceDialer.apk from CM-6 release for easy downloading.
***Instructions- Download the file into your root of your SD card, using Root Explorer remove the old VoiceDialer.apk and install the new 09SEP-VoiceDialer.apk
The OLD VoiceDialer.apk can be found under /system/app
Mine is working great!
Any questions, PM me....
Enjoy!
my bluetooth headset can now operate the voice commands, however, after a command is given, Voice Dialer FCs.

Did you remove the old VoiceDialer.apk?
Also, don't forget to change the permissions on the 09SEP-VoiceDialer.apk after yoo move it to /system/app.
This is working great for me, back to the way it was before the update!
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
so as far as the instructions:
***Instructions- Download the file into your root of your SD card, using Root Explorer remove the old VoiceDialer.apk and install the new 09SEP-VoiceDialer.apk
is install the new file is just copying it then pasting it into the system/app folder using root explorer, longpress on app and change permissions to allow all. then reboot.
EDIT: apparently yes, my bt headset works perfectly with voice dialer now. thank you.
This is great -- restores the BT voice dialing functionality that should have been stock in the Eris from the start
Is the source for this APK available? I wonder if it would be possible to modify to add an optional "confirmation" step:
User: "Call Jim Somename"
Phone: "Calling Jeff Someothername, is that correct?"
User: "No"
Could certainly be fancier, like presenting several options, but the above would be sufficient to prevent misdialing people you don't mean to call in other area codes, etc. That's my main hesitation to use it right now; my wife's name, in particular, seems to mismatch to other names often.
I haven't done much Android development yet, but I'd be interested in poking at this code.

I remove the old voicedialer. I copied over to system/app change the perms and reboot. when long pressing the bluetooth the dialer comes up but never prompts. I tried renaming the file. I tried just an install. that worked once but FC verytime after.
What am i doing wrong
Thanks for this
I can't believe that Google has worse technology than MS on this! MS Voice Command is far superior.
I tried vlingo with mixed results.
Will try this.
Just installed on my Aria running Liberated 2.2 and it works great!
BTW, I couldn't for the life of me delete the old VoiceDialer.apk using a file explorer, so I just took a shot and installed this Voice Dialer, so no real need as far as I can tell to go through the hassles of the instructions above.
Many thanks.
I tried.this but I keep getting a parsing error ???? I'm a noob have no clue what that means..lol

I realize that this is a bit of a dead post, but do you think this apk would work on a Samsung Captivate? I'm currently running with Perception 10.3 and Speedmod kernel, but for some reason the BT Voice Dialer has decided to stop working and is continually stuck at Starting Up.
I'm trying to get this to work on my Aria running FR0008 but no dice. Even using Root Explorer I simply cannot get either the original Dialer.apk deleted or the replacement 09SEPDialer.apk installed.
What am I doing wrong? I REALLY want the proper Bluetooth dialer in this ROM as I use a headset often and at the moment I prefer it to the Cyanogen ROMS.

Have you tried this? Download the 09Sep-VoiceDialer.apk to your computer. Rename it VoiceDialer.apk and place it in your tools directory of SDK. Connect your phone to PC. Open a command prompt window and navigate it to your tools directory of SDK. Type adb remount. Then type adb push VoiceDialer.apk /system/app. Then adb reboot. Be certain to take not to the caps in the file name as well so it will overwrite the one that's already in place on your phone. Hope this helps

Awesome, I'll try giving that a whirl later this evening. Thanks for the pointer.
So, I gotta be honest, I just simply do not have the technical know how to get this working. I've downloaded and installed all relevant files but can't even seem to get the phone connected.
Here's what I'd love to be able to do, simply replace the VoiceDialer.apk in the Aria FR008 ROM - which does not support Bluetooth voice dialing with this one that apparently does.
I have tried unzipping the FR008 ROM and replacing the file and rezipping. When I go to install it from card in recovery mode it immediatly crashes. I'm seeing that the FR008 zip is "signed" and guess that I'm missing doing something important here, resigning either the whole ROM or just the file?
Can anyone please help me out here as I'm really struggling with this.

Yeah... if you unzip it you will need to sign it when you zip it in order to flash it. Try opening to rom with 7zip or winrar and just drag and drop the new one into the zip to replace the old one. Don't unzip it.

Google Talk is an instant messaging, audio and video chat service from Google, which is being designed for users to communicate in real time with other users who also use Google Talk. To complement Google Talk on desktop computer, Google has recently expanded Google Talk to Android phones with video and voice chat. With the new added service to Android phone, the users can now make a video or voice chat with their friends, family and colleagues who also use Google Talk on Android devices or on desktop PC.
Key features of the Google Talk for Android includes:
Able to make calls over 3G or 4G data network (if your carrier supports it) or over Wi-Fi.
Simply touch the video or voice chat button to connect with the friends or family members who are in the Google Talk friends list.
Text-chats will be overlaid on the phone screen while you are on video with others.
The video will automatically pauses and audio will keep going when you need to check something else from the Home screen or apps.
Google Talk with video and voice chat has already started to delivered to Google Nexus S devices as part of the Android 2.3.4 over-the-air update. Other Android devices will have to wait until the phone manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung, Motorola, LG and etc to start offering upgrade to Android 2.3.4 for their respective phones in order to get Google Talk with video and voice call feature.
If you can’t wait for the Google Talk with video chat support to come to your phone, which may take weeks or months to arrive, a hacker named britso has managed to extract Google Talk 1.3 app with video plus voice call support from Google Nexus S Android 2.3.4 update, hack the SigninActivity.smali to comment out a line so that the app works on other devices. The app is then re-compiled and pushed as the APK file for installing into other Android mobile phones running Android 2.3 or above.
Listed below are several ways on how to instal lGoogle Talk with voice and video chat support onto your Android smartphone. Note that the hack only works on rooted Android phone.
The download links of Google Talk apk is available from xda-developers.com (registration required).
Method 1: Via ADB
1.Download either Talk_with AV.zip or Talk_with_AV_no_wifi.zip.
2.Connect the Adnroid phone to PC and run following commands on ADB console:adb remount
adb shell mv /system/app/Talk.apk /system/app/Talk.apk1
adb uninstall com.google.android.talk
adb push libtalk_jni.so /system/lib/
adb push Talk2.apk /system/app
3.Run Talk and press on your own name where you can change your own status and tick the Allow video and voice chats to enable the feature.
Method 2: Using Root Explorer
1.Download and extract Talk_with AV.zip to SC card.
2.Open Root Explorer and navigate to extracted files on SDcard.
3.Copy talk2.apk and go to /system/app.
4.Press Mount R/W at the top right and then press Paste on the bottom left.
5.Now you have both talk.apk and talk2.apk.
6.Rename Talk.apk to Talk.apk1.
7.Select and hold the other Talk2.apk and press Permissions and select:User: Read Write
Group: Read
Others: Read
And press Ok.
8.Now press and hold on Talk2.apk and press Rename.
9.And rename Talk2.apk to Talk.apk.
10.Go back to extracted files SDcard and copy libtalk_jni.so.
11.Navigate to system/lib.
12.Press Mount R/W at the top right and then press Paste on the bottom left.

Here are some helpful hints for future posts:
1. There is no download link in this thread or reference to the original post. You should try to fix it. I think this is the link you are referring to:

2. We are on xda-developers as such why do you need to include the line registration is required. Don't just copy and paste information you found somewhere else, we are getting no where.
3. Include something useful or insightful such as "Hey here's another method and the link is below!" Something like that.

To use the rear cam to do voice chat, you have to either let people see you or you see them.
Sit before a mirror and use rear cam, you can see them, they can see you...
you have gingerbred 2.3.4 ?
While copying the .so file to /system/lib I face two problems :
1) i don't get mount r/w instead i get mount r/o.
2) if i tap mount r/o and paste the file it says not enough space, even if i don't tap mount r/o and then paste it, it says the same thing.
I have like 916KB free and 276MB used.
Is the folder dynamically expanding?
Or i have used a lot of space?
No app showing
So I installed with the root explorer method it all went fine. Gmail and market still working. But I don't have a "talk" app to use now.

I flashed XXKPH and then tried to goto Service Mode and then Audio ... VOILA!!! It works...
So for those who are in KPN or KPN based firmware eg. fla.sh 2.2 ..Good news
You can now hack the in-call volume to get it louder and use it outdoors ..
INSTRUCTIONS:
Requirements:
1. Rooted Phone.
2. RootExplorer or some other explorer with root permissions. can also use adb if u know it .
1. copy the attached file using root exporer to /system/app
2. Edit permissions to rw-r-r and REBOOT
3. Open Dialer and type *#*#197328640#*#*
4. Navigate as
[5] Audio >> [2] Headset >> [2]RX Value >> [1] Rx Codec/Volume >> [1] Rx Codec Gain:
5. Select it and input value ffff
the result will be 12db
P.S.
1. Dont forget to backup your original settings as well as the original servicemode.apk, just in case
2. If you can already access the Audio settings then skip the copying part just go ahead with the value editing.

Hi. My SGA has the latest Official CyanogenMod nightly. I have Windows XP, a bluetooth dongle, and bluesoleil drivers.
I am able to send images and apk files from my pc to my phone. But when I try to send an epub file, or a 7z file, my pc says:
"Access is denied. Please make sure you have the proper right to access the files or folders."
So I tried to create a compressed file and instead of using 7z, I used .zip. And it was able to send it. So I'm positive that my phone has a list of allowed filetypes to be received. Is there any way to edit it? Thanks.
PS: I tried declining a file (that successfully went through), and it gave the same access denied error on my pc. So I believe that my phone is automatically denying certain filetypes. Thanks.
yeah i think so...i cant send apk file via bluetooth i think ace wont allowed it
sent from ACE TO ACE
Same problem
What I did was changed the extension of those files to .Mp3
This way I was able to send via bluetooth and then on phone change it back to original extension
Problem?

Well that's really a hassle to do. I'll just have to wait for a real solution.
Also, every time I receive a file it asks me to confirm it. Stock Gingerbread had a check box to always receive files [from a specific device] automatically. I can't seem to see that option here. Any thoughts? Thanks again.

I am able to get the native hotspot working on rooted JUUS06252012 and bypass the "dial 611" message. I'm posting this right now via wifi tethering, on a prepaid plan with a data package.
Before trying to get the native hotspot to work, I did try a few apps first. WiFi Tether for Root works in WPA mode (configured as Epic 4G Touch), but it broke wifi completely after tethering and wifi stayed broken even after a hard reboot. Logcat said a wifi driver file was locked and could not be loaded. I had to factory reset to get wifi working again. FoxFi seemed to work at first, but force closed whenever a client connected.
The mod: I found two values in settings.db to be modified. As we all know, there are many ways to update a sqlite database, but here is one easy way, keeping in mind that the Pantech Burst factory rom lacks many things like BusyBox or the commandline sqlite3. Yes, you need to be rooted:
1. Install Andsen's aShell and aSQLiteManager (not SQLiteManager).
2. Run aShell, check root, tap File Explorer, go to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases, open settings.db, when prompted to open a copy, say yes and open with aSQLiteManager, tap table secure, tap data and tap "edit" for each of the below
softap_free_supported=1 (old value 0)
softap_entitlement_interval=0 (old value1440)
Then tap back twice. When prompted to commit changes, say yes and exit aShell.
3. Reboot and you can now use the native hotspot. Install a toggle widget for convenience.
*EDIT: with this mod, turning on hotspot from the 2nd level "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings" page works reliably, whereas turning it on from the 1st level "Tethering & portable hotspot" page would show the "dial 611" message. Many hotspot widgets work reliably as well, such as HotSpot Toggle, Hotspot Widget or many others.

After a lot of trial and error I have this working on ICS. I tried the free apps first and at first I couldnt even get the change to take. When I did by copying the file editing it then replaceing it the system would just hang on boot. I did get it to work though after having to wipe my device a few times. Now this may still work with the free programs im not realy sure as I figured id give the paid ones a try and got it working. I used the program root explorer. I copied the settings.db and pasted the copy in the same folder. Then I edited the copy in SQLite editor although it still couldnt edit the original.. Then in root explorer I renamed the old file by adding an extension to the end and renamed the new file to replace the old one. Then in root explorer i double checked that the permissions were the same as the old file and also..... (I THINK THIS WAS THE IMPORTANT THING BY THE WAY) I checked the ownership settings in root explorer it was already set to "system" just like the old file. I think the other programs may have been changing the owner of the new file causing issues. Anyway after rebooting it started right up and I can turn on wifi hotspot from either menu. On gingerbread it only worked from the one menu. I hope this works for you guys!!!!!!
by the way i used the original two edits from the first post

Hey thanks! This was the setting that did the trick for me on my Pantech Crossover (P8000). I had recently done the vendor upgrade to Gingerbread and lost root, but more importantly, SVTP's Wifi Hotspot & USB Tether Pro stopped working for me.
I rooted using pawaa's excellent guide and thought that would do the trip, but no such luck. Found this thread, bought SQLite Editor and made the aforementioned changes and all was well.
Guess I don't need SVTP anymore, but the widget works well, and I don't mind having paid for it for the month or so that it worked under Froyo. (Also, it was paid for out of my Nexus 7 $25 credit.) Anyways, just wanted to mention this in case anybody else was trying to get tethering working again on the Crossover after upgrading to 2.3.6.
I am having rooted JUUS03122012.
My Root/data folder is empty

2. Run aShell, check root, tap File Explorer, go to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases, open settings.db, when prompted to open a copy, say yes and open with aSQLiteManager, tap table secure, tap data and tap "edit" for each of the below
softap_free_supported=1 (old value 0)
softap_entitlement_interval=0 (old value1440)

For Android 2.3.
A simple method for switching on Tethering:
1. Install from market Secret Codes Revealer (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.afp_group.software)
2. Search Codes
3. List Codes
4. Tap on "softapactivation"
5. Launch code
6. Now we on SoftapHiddenMenu
7. Check on all checkboxes
8. Save
9. Reboot
10. Enjoy full tethering

I tried all of the methods above in ICS and none of them work. Not only do they not work, but if you try to edit the com.android.provider.settings AT&T will block your incoming calls, disable all notifications for messages, and break the home button. I was not able to find away to fix this without reflashing the ROM. I tried repairing the permissions but it did not help. I could not simply change the settings back since it seems AT&T's program did that for me and nonetheless deactivated me.
I can't get this to work either. My phone was purchased as an unlocked device, I didn't realize some things are still locked. :'(
I tried multiple times. I am running the stock (rooted) Android version 4.04 Baseband version JUUS09032012. Everything was setup fresh, all I did was root the device, get my Google account logged in and install the Superuser app, aShell and aSQLiteManager. I didn't stop, disable or uninstall any apps. Then followed the instructions here carefully.
I also tried the "Secret Codes Revealer" method with no luck. But I did not get any popups requesting root access when trying that method, so I can't imagine it doing anything.
I really love the phone - it is everything I want other than the tethering restriction. Hopefully this will be figured out before I am tempted by the new Nexus phone to be announced soon.
I used root browser to make a copy of the database file, edited it with asqlite, then went back to root browser and renamed the copy to the actual database. Then I booted into cwm and selected fix permissions and it works fine. That was the only way I could get it to work.

i face the same problem but i decided to try it one more time
here is what I done
i use a sqllite editor premium
do a backup of the files
i use the root explorer and copy the settings.db and paste in the same folder
after that i used sqlite editor and then settings.storage
after that i change the following values
softap_free_supported=1 (old value 0)
softap_entitlement_interval=0 (old value1440)
entitlement_pdp _checked changed from 0 to 1
than sve it and replace the settings.db by deliting or renaming the original one
than change the settings -copy.db to the settings.db
and delete all the other files that exist in that folder except settings.db (delete .db-shm and .db-wal also)
or
replace all the files in the data/data/com.providers.settings/databases from the attachment
Just download the attachment from Post# 17 and use Root Explorer to overwrite/replace all the files in the data/data/com.providers.settings/databases from the attachment.
It works like Charm.
Thanks irbaaz
Hmm... I didn't touch "entitlement_pdp _checked" but it all seems to work anyway.

This works on rooted AND NON-ROOTED Pantech bursts.
This is so easy. I tested on 4 different bursts including mine. 2 rooted and 2 stock. , 3 on ics, 1 on gingerbread (just arrived) All unlocked. None using AT&T. 3 on Digicel Antigua 4GLte Network.
Thanks Almark for the lead. You're a life saver.
