[Q] help, what rom can I flash - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello im from costa rica, i recently bought my SGS2 and root it with doomlords method, i got cwm, but it dosnt have advance options or backup, so i have a few questions:
first, my specs are:
model gt-I9100
android 2.3.5
baseband I9100UHKG4
kernel I9100UHKI6
which of this kernels can i flash using odin? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=cf+root so i can have CWM?
and afterwards, what ICS rom can I flash in order to work with the 3g connection in my country?
thanks!

Try using the KI4 or KI8 kernel in post number 6 in the thread. (2 bottom downloads in the post)
Once you get cwm and properly install the rom (wipe everything, data, dalvik, cache), you should be able to install any rom and get 3G to work. If you have any problems like slow connection, just change modems.

As you are going to update to ics, instead of flashing a kernel download a stock ics roms like lpq, lp7, lp2 and flash it via Odin. Later use the matching cf root file and flash it via Odin, now you will have the latest cwm.

try flash an ICS rom (LP2 or LP3 or LPS) with odin . and root it with its CF-root or Siay kernel (again with Odin).
using 3G in your country return to your sII's Modem not Rom (i think) .

[Q] Flashing over to a different kernel?

Hey all,
I've been doing a bunch of stuff with motorola, and samsung is just confusing me... My sg2 is running the I9100XWke7 insecure kernel. The baseband is ke1 though...
I was wanting to throw the SensatioN ROM by Crysis21 on it, but I noticed that it's based on the kg6/ with the kh3 modem...
What would I have to do to be able to flash this rom, and is it safe to flash a different kernel such as going from the ke7 to kg6?
I've done some searching around the forum, but my internet connection is really crappy, so I apologize in advance if there is already another thread about this.
Thanks all!
Generally you can upgrade a kernel
Likewise a modem.
Likewise a full firmware .
Could you have a KG4 firmware and change its KG4 modem to KH3 yes no problem.
Could you have a KG4 firmware and flash a KH3 Kernel probably .
Personally i flash the same firmware that the custom rom is based on first.
KG6 based rom and i flash full KG6 firmware .
Then flash custom rom .
jje
Just flash the rom, i think your getting confused with rom/kernel differences.
If you wish to use a custom rom and its an odin .tar file, you just flash that and dont worry about kernels.
If you wish to install a different kernel like ninphetamine or speedmod etc - then you can do this after you have flashed the custom rom of your choice.
HOWEVER, If the rom is a .zip based installation, you will need a kernel that includes CWM such as cf-root, ninphetamine etc before flashing the rom you have chosen.

Both of you have helped tremendously! Thank you Just gotta get used to Samsung now lol

[Q] Baseband version

hi guys,
i've tried few other roms, XXLPH recently and it changed my Baseband to XXLPH. i recovered my phone back to original Stock ROM 2.3.5 (XWKJ1) where my baseband was XXKI4, everything is like it was before except the baseband, which is still XXLPH. is it possible to somehow flash only the baseband without wipeing the phone with stock rom via Odin ? everything seems to be working so do I even need to flash it ? also, I don't really understand what that Baseband does.
thank you
Most of the ROMs don't include a baseband / modem / radio, so you can flash what you want separately. If you cand find an Odin flashable modem file, then you can change only that, without any other modifications. There are also CWM flashable ones, which is much easier than with Odin.
ok, got it.. so the question is, do I need to change it back to KI4 if everything is working with LPH (and my battery seems to live longer with LPH) although LPH is for ICS 4.0.3 and KI4 is for GB 2.3.5 which i have now ? thanks
//and where can I get these ? in Odin it is Modem button right ? and in CWM it is update.zip, so I just need my XXKI4, any ideas ? thanks
If it works leave it .
Modem files are in the Modem thread in dev section .

ok, i found them.. but the second question please

You are right . In odin it's the "modem".And in CWM it's a ZIP file(whether it's name is Update doesn't matter)
thank you all

I suggest you run CheckROM RevoHD v6 with the latest Siyah Gingerbread kernel. It gives me the best battery life when I implement MagicConfig.
1. Download CheckROM and Siyah kernel and copy it to your phone. Make sure you remember the location thereof.
2. Download and install the latest GB insecure kernel by Chainfire and install it via ODIN from your PC.
3. Enter recovery mode on your phone and install the downloaded firmware which is in a ZIP file
4. Reboot your phone and let it continue to complete the initial setup.
5. Reboot to recovery mode again, install siyah kernel (also a ZIP file) and reboot again.
6. Look for the MagicConfig thread and modify the kernel settings to get the best balance between performance and battery life.
PS: doing the above will void your warranty so be careful. I also suggest that you do a little research before attempting anything drastic. First read then ask.

Well I am asking about most how does modems have to do with the roms. I'm used to HTC with default radio and every rom works lol
Any Gingerbread or ICS Modem can be used with any rom period. It is just a radio and some perform better in certain regions. ( For me KL1 in Canada)

Well, any GB or ICS modem meant for your device, anyways.
Then why is there specific firmware for each modem? How would I backup all my original stuff?

We usually start by reading the Guides specifically Nandroid backup via Clockwork Mod recovery .An apps backup via Titanium Pro app .
THERE IS NO SPECIFIC FIRMWARE FOR EACH MODEM .
Firmware is released with a modem inside . Modem updates do not happen as often as firmware is upgraded . Apart from a few network specific locations all modems work with all firmware . Some users may find xxx modem better than yy modem .
Firmware is flashed as one file containing firmware /OS Kernel/ Modem/CSC in most cases all parts of the firmware are interchangeable within the same Android version .

On LQ5 firmware. Help please

I am on stock LQ5 firmware & kernel without root.
After hearing about all this stuff about LQ5, I tried to flash Siyah kernel 3.3.3b. But it didn't succeed. Still my phone is working.
But can anybody help me how to get rid of I9100XXLQ5.
Please help.
Just flash a new FW with ODIN. I flashed KH3 (GB) one, because it's wipe and then LPF (ICS) on my GF phone with no problems.
I'm still using LQ5 (everything stock)...best ROM so far

I have XWKL1 Gingerbread. Can I flash it to be safe from LQ5. Will it brick my phone.
You are still on LQ5. Why? How it is safe?
I am too on XXLQ5 with no root & no custom kernel.
Working fine. No issues. Stable ROM.

It will not if you use Odin. Just don't use CWM.
You still can root using other than cfroot method if you like.
Using temp cwm just don't wipe while on it.
I'm still on it, but thinking to remove it because **** happens and I tend to forget stuff.
But have to say its the ICS that should be on every S2. Hope official 4.04 start raining soon
keep calm u can save ur phone
flash a 4.0.3 ics release from samsung via odin
and your phone will be safe
stay away from any type of wipe from recovery its better not to take risk
I had your same situation.
I flashed litening 3.2 via odin, so i got rid of 4.04 and i restored a backup
Now im with Neatrom.

Weird problem upgrading to Stock ICS

Hi guys,
1. I have a problem of flashing stock ICS straight from a 2.3.4 Checkrom V4
2. I used ODIN and flashed UK based ICS (I9100XWLPT) and everything when well, i could start and setup as per normal, thing is, it is UNROOTED.
3. So i flashed CF-ROOT (CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LQ5-v5.6-CWM5.zip) to I9100XWLPT as this is the closest and the fact that the ICS Stock firmware modem is (Modem: XXLQ6) via Odin (Tar file in PDA and Flash)
4. Now, i could not boot the phone, it goes to the normal startup (the one with yellow triangle) and then it goes blank forever. I tried reflash kernel, i tried factory reset and everything and it goes blank.
5. So i flash the recovery package, i tried flashing bootloader first, it tried flashing kernel first then flash the ics recovery package, but everytime when i flash my Odin will hang/Not Responding. I tried factory reset, i tried taking out batt and leave for minutes and reflash again but still, my ODIN hang.
6. So i restore via nandroid backup, and then tried to reflash stock firmware as i did initially but still, ODIN hang.
7. So i thought maybe i could flash to 2.3.6 Checkrom V6 but still, when i tried to flash the ICS Firmware, my odin will hang.
Please help me guys on what should i do, i truly apologize for the long post and i might sound confusing but i hope you could advice me on what to do. I really want to use ICS but now still stuck on Checkrom V6 2.3.6 Android.
Ok you have a sound nandroid back up that's good. Try this its what I used to go to stock LPT. Flash it through PDA in odin like before then root with Galaxian kernel again through PDA in odin. It's specific for 4.0.4 ROMs. Alternatively there are pre- rooted, modified stock ROMs in the android development forum. All the best.

Hi, thank you for the suggestion but like i mentioned in No 5 & No 6, ODIN will hang everytime i flash something and then it will say FAIL.
which version of odin are you using. the newer 3.0.4 or the older version?
4.0.4 roms work with odin 3.0.4 not old er versions.

Hi, i have found the SOLUTION
If the SGS2 is from Gingerbread or to be exact, from Checkrom V6 and below.
I have to flash rom from Hydяa-H²o first and then i can move on to any other ICS ROM without having te flash brick issue.
e.g: If i flash Resurrection Remix to Checkrom V6, i will facing the Flash Brick issue and the only solution to this is to restore your nandroid backup. Try everything recovery etc etc, would not work.
I have to flash Hydra Rom first to Checkrm V6 and then moved to Resurrection Remix. Thats the only workable way for now.
I can confirmed this as i tried this on 3 of my friend Samsung Galaxy S2. As the explanation for this, i did not know but it works.
Just for the record, you flashed the wrong kernel version.
You're supposed to look at kernel version, not baseband!
