So I recently bought an unlocked international version of the Samsung Galaxy S2, and so far I freaking love this phone. It's staying connected to wifi networks just fine, so I'm glad I haven't experienced that issue like many others have (-keeps fingers crossed-). Also no yellow tint so far.
I am coming to this phone from a Samsung Captivate, and I'm loving the FUNCTIONAL GPS, the front-facing camera, and everything else this phone has that the original Galaxy S should have had. However, I need a bit of help on the development side of things, because I want to flash Cognition as soon as I can.
I'm not a complete noob, but I apologize if I'm asking anything that's already been answered, so please, no "L2USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION N00B, LOLZ" trolling on here.
I followed instructions for rooting the phone just fine, and I flashed ROM's (Darky, Serendipity, Cognition, Phoenix Unleashed, CM7) plenty on my Captivate, so I understand how Odin, download mode, etc. all works.
I've got the phone rooted, downloaded the Cognition 1.6 ROM and currently trying to flash it through ROM Manager. Signature verification failed when I'm in recovery mode. I'm just wondering if there's some sort of step like on the original SGS where I have to flash to stock with Odin, then flash the ROM, etc. It's currently on KE7 firmware.
One more thing, I just realized I don't really know how to get into recovery mode on this phone either. I know Download Mode is Home + Power + Volume Down, what's recovery? Thanks in advance!
Recovery Mode is Home + Power + Volume UP .
ROM manager
Be better to follow the instructions as given for that rom .
Installation Instructions:
I highly recommend flashing the full rom! (updates can be unpredictable)
(If you have problems with the update version, flash the full rom instead)
BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!
Download the rom zip from below (don't rename it!)
Put the downloaded zip file on your internal sdcard
Reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery
(don't do this from rom manager, it won't work)
Select Install zip from sdcard
Select Browse for zip on sdcard
Select the zip file you put on your sdcard above

I just love this community!
Yes, I did follow the ROM's instructions. As I did when I was on the SGS. It's giving me "File verification signature failed!" message in recovery. That's my problem, not figuring out how to do the whole process.
Is it because it's Android Recovery 3e instead of 2e, like the problem with Froyo on the first Galaxy S? If so, how would I revert back to 2e recovery if it was 3e stock to begin with?

Yes but that's just my problem, rebooting into ClockworkMod Recovery. It's still giving me the stock 3e Android recovery, which has file signature verification enabled. I'm following the instructions but a few steps are left out because most people on here are more experienced with this phone, whereas I just switched.
On the old one, I would use Odin to go back to 2.1 Eclair and get 2e recovery before flashing a ROM. No idea how to get around file signature verification on this one.

Something wrong then suggest ask in rom post or try another rom .
Basics are as always flash a rom with root and CWM .
Unzip rom if required
Then load rom into memory card boot to 3e or 4e recovery choose zip and install .
You can toggle signature verification off in CWM .
The method works on 3e and 4e for definite .

Above rom works via 3e recovery .

Nevermind, I figured it out, but what you said helps others who run into this situation. I used the old method of rooting, using CF Root gives me the CWM Manager app and I was able to get into Recovery 4 this way.
Hey everyone, I would like some help from some of you and any input would be greatly appreciated
Im currently running a froyo rom 2.2.1 toxic 7 and it is a port of a i9000 rom so my phone is listed as i9000 in the settings. I tried installing cyanogen 7 the nightly build and one of the release candidates but i got a status 7 error on both of them
a quick google search tells me that because my phone is in i9000, it wont install so i was wondering if anyone had an idea of what to do? I tried installing cmenards overstock kernel but once I chose it from the install zip from sd, my screen was stuck on "Installing Update..." so after 30 minutes, I did a battery pull and it still booted into my regular rom.
So my question is, how could I get my phone to cyanogen 7? and if I have to go back to stock, how would I go abouts to getting cm7.
I would like to thank you in advance for reading this and any help is greatly appreciated
either odin back to stock or try to flash a vibrant boot gingerbread bootloader and then flash
Yea, like the guy above me said, odin to stock and then follow cm7 op instructions.... i always odin to stock before installing any roms, unless i happen to be on a rom that is a step in the ops instructions for flashing.
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
odin to stock, copy the update.zip i've attached to your internal sd use it to flash the CM7 CWR.
Factory Reset
Mounts menu ---> Format System
Advanced menu ----> Wipe Dalvik cache
Flash CM7
Fix Permissions
Reboot enjoy.
Hi all,
I rooted my SGS2 (KE7) with CF-Root ages ago and haven't done much since then, aside from take regular backups.
Looking at the Cyanogenmod stuff, I fancy giving it a go. All the guides talk about using the kernel at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693 .
Does anyone know if I can flash the cyanogenmod ROM using the recovery mode I have with CF-Root, or if I need to get use the kernel from the above patch first?
This morning I tried installing the kernel (from the CF-Root CWM), when my phone rebooted, the touchscreen worked on the unlock page but not once I unlocked (I use LauncherPro as my launcher). Rebooting into recovery mode didn't work (the phone just booted normally) so I reflashed CF-Root but still had the same problem however I could boot into recovery mode and restore this morning's backup.
Now, the phone boots (with the warning triangle, expected) but there is no response after I unlock for a minute or so. Setting the stock launcher back works but I'm confused about why this should happen and what I should do next.
Does anyone know why my non-stock launcher is now being non-responsive for the first minute after boot / what I can do to get it back?
Am I able to install cyanogen with CF-root, or do I need to use the kernel in the above link? and if so, do I need to do anything other than just flash and if not why didn't the phone boot into recovery when I tried it earlier?
Any suggestions gratefully received!
-Jeff
The cf-root kernel is all you need to install cm7.

This is correct. However, after you install the cm7 .zip the first time, it will have only installed the kernel for cyanogen mod. So you will then need to boot back into recovery with 3 button mode and run the zip install again from there. You will then have CM7.

Don't quite understand this. I've got the cm_galaxys2_full-39.zip (100MB), I was going to put this on the SD card, boot into recovery mode and install from there. Are you saying I need to do this same process twice? (and if so, why does it only install the kernel the first time when it is the complete zip file?)
Cheers,

CF-root => Cyanogen mod
Hello everybody,
There are a few threads that discuss this question, but they all draw a different conclusion.
This one for instance : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367933 (or if the link is broken, search for : How can i use cf-root kernel for cm7?).
In the thread above they claim that CF-root is not compatible with CM7, however in this very thread there is said that when installing the .zip file twice, it should work just fine. As i'd like to install CM7 on my CF-rooted S2, i have to know for sure:
Is there a way to install CM7 on a CF-rooted device?
Many thanks
Rom manager doesnt work with cf root, so to flash cm7 download the zip, boot into recovery, and flash the zip twice, and it will work.
Make sure you wipe data and cache, and take backups before you do.

Ok, i'll give it a go .
Thanks for the quick response, it is much appreciated!
Trying to install clockworkmod but I have 3e recovery. I did it through rom manager which was a nub mistake but I didn't know 3e was going to troll me. So it says:
e:failed to verify whole file signature
e:signature verification failed samsung "3e"
I then followed this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16909269&postcount=12
and tried the Speedmod kernel to get rid of 3e like the person said but that rom is for the international version and now I can't connect to verizon.
So at the point I am thinking using Odin is my only option but all roms are .zip and not .tar. I am clueless as what I can do. Please help me.
So I tried the Odin method in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1026746 and flashed the pit and stock 2.1 files. It passed with green in odin but when I put the battery back in it boots into 2e but says # Manual Mode # at the bottom. I am not sure if that means the flash didn't actually work or what. I am lost now.
Thought I'd update this thread since I finally fixed the problem and sucessfully put Cyanogenmod7 without using the stupid Rom Manager after about 8 hours of work. So just in case someone wants to know what I did. For some reason Odin was not working so I used Heimdall v1.83 and the EB01 Heimdall package and sucessfully flashed to froyo 2.2. I mounted the sdcard and put Cyanogenmod7 and gapps on it.
Now I used Odin to flash the CM7 capable CWM (I think its version 4). Booted the phone into download mode and then used jt1134's ClockworkMod Recovery found in the CM7 fascinate wiki. The wiki says use Heimdall but I used Odin and it worked. The CWM is now blue instead of Red. Next I did a wipe data/factory reset along with wipe cache partition. I selected install zip from scard and choose the CM 7.1 package. Everything went well and it boots into CM7. NOW TO INSTALL THE GAPPS. I thought I just boot into CMW using the volume buttons and power button BUT NO that is NOT correct. In CM7 you have to hold the power button and press reboot and then select recovery AND THEN IN THAT CWM select install zip from sdcard (choose gapps). THIS IS IMPORTANT OR ELSE GAPPS WONT INSTALL. I was bummed for like another hour.
So there it is how to install CM7 just when you think you have been to hell and back with the fascinate. Never again am I volunteering myself to help root and install CM7 on a friend's fascinate. The droid incredible was soo easy!
I know it's been adressed many times in different ways, but the info I found yet is not clear so I need a little help! I am trying to install the latest stable Cyanogen mod, using Gingerbread 2.3.7.
I have a Galaxy SII from Bell that I rooted and unlocked when I got it last november. It came on 2.3.3 and I flashed an official 2.3.4 on it, mainly to improve the battery life (and it worked). I did that using Odin and it went well.
Now I try to install Cyanogen mod through ClockworkMod ROM manager, I download and launch the install from ROM manager but on restart the install fails because of the classic 3E recovery message that says the whole signature cannot be verified.
I was having doubts if my phone was even rooted, but since it is still unlocked and software like Titanium backup runs fine, I guess that confirms it!! I am not sure what route to take from here...
Right now here are the phone details...
GT-i9100 on 2.3.4, FW I9100XXKG2, Kernet 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG2-CL375027 [email protected] #2
I'll appreciate any help!!!!!!

|Question = Q&A
Looks like you are yet another that has not followed the instructions and flashed a cwm and root kernel .
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
OR are not following the instructions posted .
First time flashing CyanogenMod 7 to the Samsung Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM?
Root the device and install ClockworkMod Recovery. Instructions are available here.
Perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM.
Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device.
Perform a factory reset.
Flash CyanogenMod.

Thanks jje... The instructions did work! Tough I tought I had bricked my phone at one point, on the final restart it would get stuck at the Samsung logon screen, but I forced it back in recovery, re-flashed from the zip and then it booted in CyanogenMod!!!
I really appreciate your reply
