Bad antenna? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi guys.
Is the antenna on Xperia S bad or what? Im at the airport and cant find any network. Im finding many available networks on the HTC phone, but cant fins any on the iPhone 4.
If I hole my hands on the top of the phone and scan for connections, I fine many networks but dissepares right away.
And the time there is connections its good connections on the available networks.
So what is this? Iphone or what!
Anyone els facing this problem?
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium

Yeah, I've noticed the same issue that WiFi signal is very low. My Xperia S cannot even detect many networks that my Galaxy S can.
Using the .73 Singapore fw.

That sucks. Im using .67 fw.
Can the antenna be improved through updates or is this a permanent "isssue"? :/
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium

Mine appears to go way further than any of my other devices. On .62

My signal is much better than my other devices actually....even better than the wireless card in my computer actually :/ it's pretty sad.
So yea, my antenna is just fine (.73)

On .67 here, and my antenna does much better than any other phone I ever had...

Ok.. Which phone? I 've experienced myself that my Xperia s is better than iphone 4s for wifi signals..
Sent from my LT26i using XDA

Yea great antena, but htc smartphones have a better one looking at my friends explorer.
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium

At the airport same date this post was started, I could'nt find any network what so ever, same on iPhone 4 (not S), but on HTC Desire I found many available WiFi connections. That sucks when thinking about HTC Desire is a 2 years old phone and the Sony antenna is not better then that.

While I've only used my XPS for a brief couple days, I've not had any issues with connectivity...
Perhaps it is a one-off situation in your case?
I mean, Sony has the whole freakin bottom part of the phone to make the sweetest antenna ever made without any nearby metal phone bits to interfere, so I would damn hope they did a fine good job! It would be really sad if this was otherwise =(

Radio/Signal help needed....

I got the Aria about a month ago, and from day one i noticed my signal kinda sucks. I get full Edge, but 3G and now H (because of root/Lib Froyo) has just never been good. I came from a Blackberry Bold 9000, and it had FULL 3G at home and work. Now the same spots are pretty crappy so its not the location. Anyone else see this or have a solution?
I live in the boonies. I just toggle edge when I'm home due to wifi and 3g when I'm in town.

ive been doing that, but its aggrivating when I KNOW the signal is there, but the phone just isnt picking it up.
Dont everybody respond at once. My Edge is even weak. I might return the phone for another aria. No one else experience this?
Since I flashed FR006, I've noticed my battery has been quick to drain. Last night at work, I noticed my network changed several times, H, G, and E. I don't remember any issues when I was on R012. I intend to revert to R012 while at work tonight to see if there is improvement.
no one on any forums seems to be having this issue, im going to try and return the phone to see if that takes care of it.

It's Antennaegate!
On a serious note, I've never had signal issues here.
Maybe check the two gold tabs on the battery cover to be sure they are making contact with the phone.
I imagine the phone came from an AT&T store? There are many Arias on eBay that have replacement battery covers, and replacements with integrated antennas are hard to come by. Without the OEM battery cover my phone never gets 3g...

Yeah, the antenna relies on the battery cover, which has part of the antenna in it via a pair of metal contacts.

Not sure if you are trying to determine if the problem is your area or your phone, but you could use something like "cellumap" to determine how your coverage at home compares to your coverage at work/where ever...

no, i know its in the phone. my wifes BB 9000 has -71 dbm while sitting next to mine with -100 dbm
Gotcha. I guess the last thing to try is exchanging the phone, or finding a friend with an Aria to come compare signal side-by-side. Having come from a BB 9000 myself, I have not noticed any differences in signal quality/reception, but if I recall correctly the 9000's antennas are larger and more spread apart.
Same thing here, never once have I gotten a 3G connection. It's always Edge even though I know there's a 3G in my area. Frustrating.
I use aria. Came from iPhone. I actually get better service now in same area
If you rooted your phone and exchange it they will frown on that lol

Wi-Fi worse with ICS update? Poll

My Wi-Fi is really bad since the ICS update. Is anyone else having the same issue?
My wifi is pretty good, better reception than my Android phone.
Mine seems the same as before which is just fine. It does better than my Droid charge for sure.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Wifi was great before ICS and is still great afterwards. Better reception than my T-bolt.
I can be outside in the yard on the opposite side of my house from the router and still get 3 bars and great speeds. I guess I just got lucky.
Mine is the same as before, too. Can't really complain.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
I've been holding off on the Prime due too all the talk about bad wifi speeds and range. Are you guys saying that it is actually not an issue? I don't care about the GPS that much, even though it has been horribly handled by Asus. But wifi is a "make it or break it" part of the product for me. Is it worse than the TF101? I have seen a lot of posts that it is worse, but you guys say that it is really good.
In doubt...
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Not an issue on mine. I have conducted tests against my laptop/tf101/ipad1...my prime is right in the mix.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
No real improvements here. Just about the same. I'm going to change my router's 2.4 Ghz band back to combined b/g/n as opposed to isolated g (which helped my Prime a LOT) to test out if ICS truly helped at all.
I'm on ICS and just switched to g only from a/b/g/n, and my speed greatly improved, so it doesn't seem that ICS made a difference in that regard. Wish I knew why using g only helps so much with the speed on the Prime. I'm in an apartment complex with many signals, and I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I'm finding that I get an extra bar indicated, but I don't think it's really any better or worse with ICS.
My experience has been a bit odd with it. As far as the signal indicator goes, my wifi reception SEEMS worse than on Honeycomb. However, I haven't lost signal at all and my speeds are great.
Overall, I'd say it's about the same, but the indicator seems to fluctuate much easier.
Same as before (which is still weak), but it is still not as good as any of my laptops, Skyrocket, Blackberry, or iPhone.
I'm actually getting better wifi range to my router.

Interesting. I'm going to do some research into whether being near so many other wireless signals may have something to do with g only performing better than a/b/g/n when I get a chance. Then again, devices like my laptop and iPad1 pull the same speed regardless of whether my router is set to g only or a/b/g/n...ugh.
I'm using a D-Link DIR-655, which is not a dual band router.

Mine is by far worse!
I barely even have a chance to tell before my Prime reboots. But it shows it as having a poor signal even when I'm right next to it and it never actually connects. Just says obtaining IP address.
With honeycomb my phone (evo 3d) would get more reception, it could see networks the prime wouldn't. Since the update my prime not only sees all the networks its getting great speeds even on the weak ones.
Same after ICS, which is good.
It's about the same for me. But I had some issues with rebooting at first, but now it is better.

Go into the WiFi settings, "forget" the network, and then reconnect. I had a similar issue after the ICS update on my home network and this fixed it for me.
Also, people shouldn't rely on the number of bars the WiFi indicator in the bottom right has. I've found this to be very inaccurate, and almost useless. I've had no bars or one bar and pulled in speeds just as good as when I had 2 or 3 bars. Instead of basing your assumptions on this, use the speedtest.net app and the wifi analyzer app.

[Q] xperia ray signal strength

I wonder if only my ray or all ray's has poor signal reception. Time from time while I'm talking with smb. my call simply hangs up. And as far as I noticed this happens when the signal reception is a bit lower or not very stable. In places where signal is weak (outside the city) my wife's dumb phone Nok1a got better signal with 1-2 bars, while ray no signal at all.
I've was using .42 firmware for a long time, tried 4.0.3 beta, now using MIUI based on 2.3.7 and still have the same problem, what makes me think that's not software related issue.
What about your phones ? Am I only who has this problem ?
Do you both have the same network operator? I can easily say that my ray has better reception than my girlfriends x10 mini pro. Some exterior phone protections weaken the reception as well.

All I can say it I never saw a mobile like Ray with such good signals... much much better signals than my HTC Sensation and HTC Desire I had previously... in fact gud signals was one of major reasons I got this Xperia Ray
The Ray has absolutely terrible wifi reception though. It won't even pick up routers when its right next to the phone whereas my Desire Z could from a pretty far distance. Only major let down.

I don't know, whether the signal strength is better now, but the batterylife is much longer!
for me,
sometime the signal is great..greater than other devices...
but some other time, at certain area, it has no signals at all while other devices have it although we are using the same network operator...
but i don't really care about it cuz i think the signals is so much better than my previous device...
My Ray is actually rather poor when going indoor first floor. But once I step outside or going to second floor, it goes 100% instantly.. So..

I had "dumb phone" Sony Ericsson k850i (which amusingly enough used to be called a "smart phone" lol), an x10 and now Ray and they all get the same signal on AT&T in the same places. Most places I am it's full signal, a handful get less... but has been consistent across devices.
I only used the x10 (not mini or pro) as my main phone for less than 6 months (free upgrade w/ contract for refurbished) and still tinker with it but for my hands I felt it was nifty but big and clunky, so I bought an unlocked Ray (2-3 months ago). I've lived/worked and hung out in the same places, so I figure it's a pretty good comparison.
TLDR: no problems with signal for me.
Yep, my ray is having low signal reception too.. that yellow triangle always appears. I think is a hardware bugs to bad. I want too switch xperia P but still don't believe they already fix the bugs for signal prob. and. xperia p is not on coming for ICS in the few weeks later.
I've notice while using the cell tower polling monitor of the Llama application that my Ray drops the signal. It shows in the log as Cell: -1:-1:-1 (ignored) No signal/Unknown. I live and work in a big city were the signal strength is very strong and were there are 4 to 6 cell towers all around me (at work or at home).
The lost of signal is very short (a second or two) but actually drop a call once.
I have base band 203028D-64 and running Android version 2.3.4.
Since I don't want to update to version 4.0.3 as there is too many people complaining about lagging problems. I will try to update the base band to 203028D-66 and come back here for results with the Llama log.

Don' remove Sim Toolkit.apk
I have to reinstall ROM due to signal problem after removing sim toolkit.apk
While searching on how to ugrade the baseband for my ST18a, I came across another thread about this issue on the Sony's Forum.
If you go to Menu - Wireless & network setting - Mobile Network - Network Mode and change to GSM only, it will give you better reception.
I have tested and validated it with the "Network Signal Info" & Llama App.
The reception signal improved dramatically and no drop calls yet.
Notice you will be on the 2G network if you have a Data Plan (which is not my case) but you can always change the network back to WCDMA-GSM when you need faster data download speeds.

Stop me from jumping....

I just sold my HTC Rezound and got my Razr Maxx from someone locally only about 5 days ago. In short, I miss my Rezound.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, let me explain. I am basing this solely off my experience at work where I spend 40+ hours of my week. Other than that, I really like this phone and want it to work out for me.
In my office here at work, I have always had bad reception with Verizon, regardless of the phone. It's just the way that this building is and the fact that there isn't a Verizon tower close enough to get good reception. Supposedly they are going to install a Verizon tower in our parking lot, but who knows when or if that will really happen.
With that being said, my Rezound held 4G for most of the day, albeit barely. But it did for most of my day and when it dropped 4G, the transition to 3G was pretty seamless.
With my Maxx, I am having major problems holding 4G or connectivity at all several times throughout my work day. If I open the Play Store or apps like Facebook, it will say no connection even when the 4G icon is visible. Then it will turn white at times too.
To its credit, I get good reception outside of work and at home which is true for every Verizon phone that I have owned (Incredible, Thunderbolt, Charge, Rezound).
So what gives? Without going back to a Rezound, what are my other options? The Nexus is much worse in this department correct?
Any advice would help, thanks!
Nexus is horrible in reception department. I know exactly what you mean with the white 4G no connection issue. I get it all the time too...even with 4G showing full bars. Also when I open the browser its just white and froze.

So, it's not just me? LOL
It's getting pretty ridiculous. Today I can barely do anything with it at work, it's not holding much of anything.
Is this a known network issue? Because if not, I will have to dump this phone unfortunately.
Yeah I don't know if it's the battery or what but 4G reception seems hit or miss on my Razr Maxx, it usually works great but in fringe areas it's shakier than I'd like.
That said, I use my office's wifi (where 4G reception sucks) and keep my phone on 3G unless I need to download things. So it isn't a huge issue.
I can't go back to a smaller battery, though.
Just as an update, the reception is embarrassingly bad today. I can't connect to anything data related. Connection keeps going in and out.
My Rezound would connect to everything daily. Only problem is that I don't want another Rezound lol.
Decisions, decisions....
the nexus has horrible signal issues, don't get one. as far as the maxx and signal/4g i get 10x better signal strength than i had with my rezound or nexus. if you want, install the .209 ics leak. it gave me much better 4g reception and speeds.
could also be you just do not have good verizon service where you are and no phone will fix that.

I definitely don't have good Verizon service where my office is located as I said in the OP. But, even with that said, my Rezound always held a data connection, and mostly 4G at that.
I have no idea why this phone with supposed better radios can't match that. It's very, very disheartening.
I will try the ICS leak. Is the .209 one the one where you can't go back to stock if you wanted to? That might be an issue for me.
Thanks!

There is none that they know of. I went into a Verizon store tonight and they installed a new sim for me.
I have had strong signal since then, but I'm not at work and I usually get good signal at home.

Have you tried simply turning 4G off? Basically, go to the network settings and turn it to CDMA only, instead of CDMA+LTE. 2-3 bars of 3G is better than 0-1 bars of 4G. At least while you're at work.

It's only happening at work where nobody gets good Verizon signal to begin with. Only problem is my rezound was holding enough signal and not dropping but this phone is dropping.
My conclusion so far is that the rezound holds weak signals better and the MAXX just drops them.

At my wit's end... do any of these phones actually work?

So I've had my new EVO 4G LTE all of about two weeks and have had nothing but troubles with it. I'm currently on the 5th phone (replaced 4 times since the first) and its still got the same wifi / 3g issues that caused me to replace it twice which have both the wifi and the 3g disconnecting for no reason whatsoever and when the 3g works, I get speeds slower than the oldest 14.4k modems unless I'm within about 100 yards of a cell tower. The other two times I had to exchange it because there was dust under the phone's screen.
Because of the connectivity issues, the phone is almost useless to me unless I don't plan on using data at all, or if I'm sitting by a wifi router and don't plan on using that connection for more than 10 minutes continuously. I've tried the 2.4GHz fix, the turning off LTE fix, and even given it a static IP at home.. all without any change in performance. I'm really at my wit's end and would have already exchanged it for a 6th phone if I thought there would be a reasonable expectation that the new one would work correctly.
Is there any other fixes out there that I have yet to try? Do any of the rooted OS's have a newer / better modem that will fix my problem? Should I just return the thing again and switch to a different manufacturer? I chose to get the Evo rather than wait for the Galaxy S3 because I never liked my old Epic, but I'm starting to think that this was a massive mistake...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you sure your router isn't acting up? And where you live might be a testing area for LTE? That would cause network issues.
The last thing is-have you removed your back cover to install am SD Card? That cover needs to be on securely as I believe that is the antenna

I haven't had any problems. I actually receive awesome 3g service (not so much indoors) the EVO connects to my wireless N router flawlessly. I think your automatic disconnection issues is due to htcsmartsync. It's designed to shut off services (like airplane mode) in order to keep the phone in a deep sleep.
I would suggest rooting your phone and deleting the code from your phone. Can work wonders ?
I wouldnt suggest unlocking your bootloader to flash Roms though..reason being, if htcsync isnt the culprit. I don't want you to have a tampered phone and not being able to return it....goodluck. ill post links in a bit

I feel your pain, I have two and both have similar issues. I have tried different roms and get the same issues. My EVO 3D was faster than this phone and I think it may be do to some issue in the firmware. I am just riding it out. I personally am surprised more users have not come forward. My biggest complaint is the lag on the device. I can flash a clean rom install, or flash over an existing base and it is faster, but then lags out and is dreadfully slow after just a few hours.
What type of encryption are you using on the router tkip, aes, wep? Is it wireless n or g?
Plenty of these phones work. My WiFi and 3G work flawlessly, and I haven't had to exchange once.
I was having similar issues with my 3G randomly dropping out, but never any problem with my wifi. I updated profile and PRL last week, flashed a ROM with SmartSync disabled, and haven't had a problem since.

i've never had problems with the device and i find it very strange that you have had problems with 5 devices. perhaps its not the phone but you that is the issue, or your hardware at home or maybe your house in in a Faraday cage or something. either way..
No issues here.
3G speeds and coverage are awesome around my work, on the way to work and at home. Also the WiFi is faster than my darn desktop, with the wireless N.

Are you sure your router isn't acting up? And where you live might be a testing area for LTE? That would cause network issues.
The last thing is-have you removed your back cover to install am SD Card? That cover needs to be on securely as I believe that is the antenna

I'm fairly sure it isn't the router since the phone is behaving the same way on my school's wifi and the one at the starbucks near my house. Also, I have other devices connected to my router at the same time as the Evo and none of them are experiencing the same issues.
I am willing to accept that there is a possibility the some or all of my 3G issues are related to the network upgrade, but I'm experiencing the extremely slow speeds over most of the city of Denver, and I'm guessing it would be unlikely that they would be upgrading 75% of the towers in the city at the same time. It also doesn't really explain the 3G service just shutting off randomly and then popping back on a few seconds later. That all being said, even if it is network issues, it just serves to highlight the lack of a reliable wifi connection.
As far as the back panel is concerned, I did install a micro-sd card there, and, since reading your post, I have removed it, blown off and dust / debris that might have gotten in there, and reseated it as snugly as possible. This didn't generate any sort of fix for the 3G issues, though I've not had a chance to test if wifi is working any better now. I did notice however that some of the gold filaments were discolored, so perhaps there is a manufacturing defect, though I'm not sure how the color of the filament could affect its conductivity.

Oh, I assume you have done PRL update and profile updates? There are 2 ways to do that. Settings/Updates/PRL and Profile.
Also dial *2 and you can do PRL and Profile updates there you. The *2 also runs a data and voice test, you will see green, or red, check marks.

I have done about 7 PRL / profile updates on this particular phone. I have also done a couple factory data hard resets through the boot screen in the hopes that it was just "glitching". Though the resets seemed to help, the effect didn't last, and none of the PRL / profile updates did anything to improve performance.
I did have a look at the *2 screen you mentioned and found that both voice and data had green checks by them, but I think this is only a check to determine if the connection exists at all and has nothing to do with quality. I do remember hearing about another testing screen you can get to through the dialer by pressing a sequence of characters which gives you access to a much more in-depth set of tests, but searching hasn't produced anything on that, at least with my search terms. That being said, I took a previous phone with the same issues into the sprint store and they told me it passed all of their diagnostic tests, so I'm not sure it would tell me anything different.

Sounds like an interesting possibility, though my wifi / 3g turn off while in direct, phone is awake and I'm using the program thats using the connection, use. I'll have to read about htcsync to see if its able to shut down connection while in use. While I'm not opposed to rooting my phone (I've resisted the urge to do it now because I really don't want to have troubles with returning it), I really don't like the idea that I might not be able to fix this problem without doing it...

Luckily, mine doesn't seem to suffer from lag at all, just a really horrible connection. From what I've heard at best buy and sprint though, a huge number of people are having similar issues with this phone. The people at best buy even went so far as to try and tell me this was a "known issue" and therefore wouldn't be exchanging it again (this was the third time), to which I had to reply that I would then like a full refund and would be taking my business elsewhere. The way I see it, if a phone has a known issue, but not all of the phones are affected by it, you have to keep replacing it until I get one without the issue.

What type of encryption are you using on the router tkip, aes, wep? Is it wireless n or g?

The encryption is WPA2 - AES and the router is running in "Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g, and 802.11b" mode.

I've thought about that possibility for sure, but the slow speeds and intermittent connections for 3g and wifi go, and have gone for all of the devices with this problem (don't forget, two of them were returned because they had dust under the phone's screen), all over the city with me, so, unless I'm a walking cell disrupter, then I think the issue lies somewhere in the phone.
Could be, I know I mess up my tv reception when I'm near it, its like my super power

I would think that this would have surfaced a long time ago were it really the case though, as this is the first phone I've ever owned which has had this much trouble with connectivity.
1st thing....I havent checked but isn't the smith.apk still included? 2ndly I had issues with this phone dropping secured connections from afar and found it to be interference witht he witless signal so try changing your frequency....that solved my issues....no lags here. Remember these new phones are designed to drop 3g when possible to help conserve battery.

From what I can tell, and I may be wrong on this of course, smith.apk is a logger and not a throttler as people initially thought. Its something I'd probably ensure was removed from any custom OS I install, but its apparently not something that would affect connections at all. That being said, I'm curious just how this "Mobile Network Director" is supposed to know when I need my data connection, but that seems to be on the network side and not on the phone.
I'll have to check into the frequency thing. I remember a long time ago I had to mess with my previous router's channel because it was interfering with my wireless mouse for some reason, but I've not had any similar problems with the new router in the last four years, until now potentially I guess.
As for the 3G turning off when possible to save battery or network bandwidth, I can understand that concept, but it would have to be very broken to shut off any network with a good signal while its actually in use.

I thought it was smith but maybe its the other thing you mentioned but they recently started adding that software to dump people from 3g to 1x to avoid congestion and it was actually installed on the phone itself. I had no issues with WiFi until the ICS stuff started coming out....I had the issue on the 3D and the LTE....the 2 phones didn't seem to like dual encryption especially from afar so I changed the encryption still had issues except for open then I tried changing the channel and that held.

A lot of misconceptions about that smith apk here.....
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I saw in another thread that you had your Epic replaced 5 times in 2 years. Now you are on your 5th Evo? So you have basically had 10 phones in the past 2 years? Have the last EVOs beet rooted at all, or are they completely untouched as far as things like the build.prop goes? Could there be a particular app that you are installing on all those phones that could be causing your issue? If you truly have had 10 bad phones in the past 2 years, then do not buy any lottery tickets!
My Evo doesn't drop Wifi at all. It does drop 3G, but only when I am in an area where I get one bar. Make sure Best Wi-fi performance is unchecked in the Advanced Wi-Fi settings, and in Wi-Fi frequency Band, try changing it to 2.4 only.
