hi,
i just bought a razr a couple days ago on the fido network here in canada.
its unlocked now and im using it on the rogers network.
i cant seem to find a straight answer anywhere; is there any OTA official rom from another country that will work on this phone, flawlessly?
thanks

there are 2 fastboot files that are guaranteed to work: Retail.BR and ViVo.BR.
u will need RSD Lite to flash.
once there, there's a few nandroid backups you can do too using CWM recovery.
Just wait for ICS. I was a rom flashing junkie with my atrix and its difficult but I am waiting this one out. Hopefully ICS is worth the wait. (Im on Fido)

exactly my thoughts, im coming from a nexus s (way too much time spent flashing modded roms then ota roms then modded roms .. ) and id really like to stay stock from now on, without the headache of drivers, adb, cwm, recoveries, radios, etc.
i guess i'll wait for an official one seeing as there arent many options, i dont want to run into something not working .

with the brazilian ROMs, the only stuff not working are the Rogers bloatware. everything else is pretty much the same.
so really, there's not much reason to update.
i did it coz i screwed up my stock ROM after rooting it, and pretty much didnt have any stock Rogers ROM anywhere.
just wait for ICS. Moto promised us Q2 2012, but with Rogers/Fido, who knows..............

I have a Galaxy s2 with BELL that's rooted, custom kernel and custom ROM and im wondering how I can put my phone EXACTLY how it was before I rooted and put my custom rom on it.
I want it exactly how it came when I got it from BELL.
If anyone can help that'd be appreciated.
Thanks,
Well you can get it back to stock, but not "bell stock." The reason being that there is no bell firmware anywhere on the internet yet, you can flash one of the generic european rom from samsung but unfortunately you cannot revert to the bell KG2 that came with the phone...
Awh man..
Whyy hasnt anyone ripped their own stock rom yet
Basically... when its available..IF its available. Would I be able to throw it on and get OTA upgrades again? I really dont see a difference between stock and rooted.. I mean I DO understand what It gives you.. but honestly the phone is already powerful enough that I really dont need to tweak it.

I read somewhere that bell has to actually release a FW update before we have something to go back to, i don't think anyone ripping their rom would work for us. Then again I'm not sure, but as it stands theres literally nothing on the net with bell on it for the GS2 so you are pretty much stuck with the generic european stuff.
To be honest, i think if you want oTA updates you'd be much better off going with a generic european Fw, bell always always takes forever to deliver updates because it has to go through them, i remember it took a while for bell to get froyo on the GS1 when it had been out forever for the european gs1's and it worked fine.

Ah i see.. WELL THEN.
What Kernel and ROM are YOU using?
I bought a protection plan at bestbuy so hopefully i can bring it back and they'll give me a new one.. I liked the look and stability of my bell rom kernal etc right now i got villainrom running and it keeps going from hspa+ to 3g etc and its annoying...
Edit: seems to only happen when data is not being used. Makes sense. Battery saving feature maybe? When bell comes out with an update If they ever do, will it also include a kernel update? Making my phone completely bell again. I would like to have my bell account app back lol.

Im just using a rooted kernel off CFROOT, with stock bell KG2 Firmware. Haven't seen a reason to put any modded rom yet, the stock rom actually is perfect, good battery life too. Tempted by CM7 though, I'm constantly tempted to try it.
Hmm yeah when they release a rom you can flash using odin, it will write the kernel, modem etc and your phone will be totally "bell" again. I'm pretty sure you can download the bell account app from market?

So from your backed up bell rom, can you get the 3 files for Odin out of it? Or i guess its not that simple?
Surely if you root, you flash a non-stock kernel? So even a nandroid/CWM backup will not be COMPLETELY stock?
Why is everyone so worried about going back to stock? Just wondering, because the european versions work just as good as the stock one, if not better, because of root.
The real question we should be asking is will Bell or Samsung release the stock files? Im sure they will, and if they don't someone will find a way to extract the stock files.

Anyone happen to know, or even a guess why telus would remove the GB update from their site. I've read about people have various problems with the updating, but from what I read, those problems were PC related.
Mine worked just fine.
I also have a question... is it possible to dump a stock rom and/or radio and/or kernel without having root?
Thx

Can anyone confirm if this is true?
That is sort of strange. Im glad I was able to get it in time. And rooted too

Can anyone tell me how I can rip the rom, cause I've tried the method found on these forums for the fascinate for froyo, but when I tried to odin it back it didn't work.
So right now I'm almost afraid to shut the phone off just in case I can't boot and I have no way to get it back to stock GB.
Mainly what I want to do is make a factory image that I can put somewhere for others to download it. Cause I want to try some things but I can't until telus puts the update up again.

I think Telus was getting all kinds of questions on when it would be available when they had no control over it - so they made a generic upgrade page.
I just tried with Kies and I got GingerBread BUT I'm also staring a long time at a galaxy S screen - lost my clockwork mod recovery as well (back to stock 3E).
Hmmmm - anyone know if this update is still available online somewhere as I have no OTA to get it and of course as the thread says... TELUS has pulled it.

I'm pretty sure to upgrade through the Samsung Kies software, you will have to remove any mods / hacks that you made to your phone.
Best option probably is to flash everything back to Stock, which I did. Then had no problem updating via Kies:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=923712
Alright I'll give that a shot tonight, the only 'mod' I have done would be rooting the phone - other than that it is stock at this time.
I guess the one thing I really shouldve mentioned in my first reply is I have the Fascinate 4G with TELUS, is the update specific to the 3G+?

Oh wait! If you have the Fascinate 4G+ (T959P) then you may not want to flash everything back to 2.2.
I'm not 100% sure that it may work with 4G Fascinate.
Can anyone validate the following steps will work on his Fascinate 4G+ ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=923712
They are different phones. If you could get the 3G+ file to flash at all (which I doubt), it would almost certainly semi brick the phone. There is an update section on telus website for fascinate 4G (just below the 3G+ entry) (no update available today). When you see the update available there, you're good to go.
I have the 4g and I won't flash anything made for the 3g. Two different phones. I remember reading a thread about people bricking the 4g while trying to put 3g stuff on it.
Hello All!
I have posted a thread a while ago about my htc amaze having so many issues after rooting and installing ROMs.
Luckly, I was able to return my phone and get it exchanged as I only had it for 1 week... so I got saved!
Now, with my new one, I still want it to be able to read Arabic correctly!
Rooting the device isn't the issue, I think I did it the first time with no problems (except for installing the ROM)
It seems like because I'm with "Wind Mobile" I can't flash the device, and I can't even get ICS when it becomes available.... I guess Wind customers are out of luck! (at least that's what I have been reading online)
I'm very new to Android world, and I like the phone the way it is except for supporting languages.
So I don't care if it's rooted or not, and all of these cool stuff. I just want Arabic!
My questions are:
1- Can I root my device, and add a patch without adding custom ROMs as I don't want to reck my phone again
So I want to keep the current ROM. "stock". and still add the patch. is this doable?
2- Regarding ICS. When the update comes out, will it be to specific cell phone carriers? I mean if you are with T-mobile -for example- you're good, and if not too bad?
does it depend on which company you are with, or just which phone you have?
I think that's it for today, lol... I'll wait for your answers
Thanks in advance!
well, the easiest way to get root is to flash a custom rom,
if you have the device rooted with stock, you could just flash the patch
if there is an ICS rom, you should be able to flash it

Hi all,
I'm thinking about whether or not to root my phone and get ICS. Having answers to these two questions would really help me make my decision:
1. My phone is an unlocked G-Note i717 from the Bell network. I'm currently using it on Fido. Is there any way for me to get the 'official' ICS update? For example, will the update get pushed to my phone even if I'm not with the original carrier?
2. Which ICS custom ROMs have the S Pen (and S memo) fully working?
Looking forward to your 2 cents. Thanks very much!
I am not a developer but here is my opinion based on years of rooting and flashing roms on android devices:
1. As long as you are running stock Bell firmware and stock recovery, you should still get the official OTA from Bell, even if it's unlocked and running on Fido. You will lose root, though. Or you can wait for a dev to post a rooted stock ROM.
2. Presumably all ICS ROMs that are posted after the official build is released will support s-pen apps, unless the dev makes a conscious choice to not include them.
Hope this helps. Like I said, I'm not a developer by any means, just an experienced user.
I would say, go ahead and root and play around with some ICS roms in the meantime. You can always go back to stock. Just make sure you read, read, read to avoid any problems. The members of this forum provide alot of great guidance.
I got a question for you, I bought my note at Rogers and I'm on Fido. I didn't had to unlock the phone, is the Canadian Note sim-unlocked by default or it is just because I bought it from the same company?
Oh and also, don't worry about getting the ICS update, usualy there's a rom running on the new leaks that appears in the next day right after the official update.
Also, I tried DaGr8 Hybrid ROM on ICS and The Official ROM, both have a fully working s-pen and can be a daily rom.
Because Fido uses the rogers network. Its not unlocked.

Wanna know something funny? I had a Nokia 2720 sim-locked on Fido that wouldn't reconize a Rogers sim-card. I can tell you that I've been very happy when the Note just worked on first boot with my fido sim card.
Now I'm waiting for LTE :/

1. Yes the update will get pushed to your phone irrespective of the carrier, as long as you haven't rooted it.
2. There hasn't been an official upgrade to ICS from Samsung for G-Note. However, there are wonderful ICS Custom ROMs that have been developed built on the chinese ICS that was leaked in April.
If you haven't had any experience with rooting and flashing of roms and kernels, and are apprehensive of doing so, I suggest you wait for some more time as an official upgrade is round the corner.
Nevertheless, if you are even moderately experienced, you can flash one of these ROMs. My personal favorite is the ICS Stunner by Team Passion (only for the International version)
They have listed wonderfully clear guides on how to carry out the process on the official threads. And you can always go back to the stock ROMs if required.
Hope this helps. Press Thank You if it does.

Yes, @tmcquake is right.
However, the S-Pen features being a part of Samsung's propriety TouchWiz interface, you won't get the active-pen technology related features in these custom roms.

Oooooh, interesting... I was under the impression that the only ICS ROMs were for the N7000 and the AT&T I717 specifically, not the variant sold by Bell, TELUS or Rogers in Canada. So the Hybrid ICS will work on a TELUS SGH-I717D Note? I've rooted mine, but was going to wait patiently for the official ICS update from Samsung, but now I'm itching to try a third-party ROM...
The current roms are built on top of the touchwiz framework. Some run custom launchers, however they still keep s pen features due to them being coded into the most basic structures of the rom. When the official release comes the developers will ask Samsung for the source. After that devs can make "vanilla" versions of android. In these we will loose the s pen button functionality but it can still be used like your finger..
sent from me TouchPad. ICS of course.

The leak is based on the i717 (AT&T) without any doubt but I'm running it on my i717R without any issue so it should be the same for the Telus Note.
As you saw a new leaks have been release today, give our good devs just a fews days and we'll be able to flash it via cmw instead of via odin.
And I'll tell you, once you taste ICS you won't wanna downgrade to Gingerbread so do it as soon as you can!

I'm in no particular rush to reflash my Note, since it is pretty awesome as it is. I've had CM9 on my Touchpad since January, so I'm more interested in seeing how well an AOSP ROM will run. I am seeing some UI lag on the Note compared to CM9 on the Touchpad and CM7 on the Desire Z, and the Note should beat both of those. If I can also get ICS on the Note, even better.

Yes I had a GNex before the Note, no lag at all on the small 1.2 Gh/z then I bought the Note with the 1.5 Gh/h and noticed lot of lag with adw launcher. Now with ICS everything is just as smooth as the GNex. still need more tweaks hehe

how did you flash it on your i717R? I have the same as you and i've never been able to flash the leaked ics rom... I tought it was only for att.
Flash cmw via odin then download the rom in zip forma (ex : the Hybrid) then flash it via recovery mode. Follow the devs instructions before a flash!
So my aunt has am AT&T Galaxy Note on T-Mobile and I told the store she purchased the phone from to flash the T-Mobile radios so that she can get 4G HSPA+ but the device is stuck on gingerbread and I would really like to update it to stock Jellybean with Touchwiz? If I use Odin to flash the latest update will she lose her unlock? But then will it need to be unlocked now that T-Mobile has 4G LTE in Las Vegas? I figured all she would need to do is buy a new T-Mobile 4G LTE compatible SIM and then use that but I'm not sure. Can the new firmware be rooted and can it be unlocked if need be? Also, she broke the mirco-usb port so is there any way that I can flash to stock without the use of that port? I'm really sorry for all the questions but if anyone could answer them I would be very grateful.
If the usb port is broken, you won't be able to use Odin. Is the device rooted? If it is there is hope! If not, you're up the river without a paddle.

I know right but luckily the device is rooted and because the shop said they flashed the T-Mobile radios, I believe it has a custom recovery on it.
Whew! I'm glad to hear you're already rooted. You can forget about Odin now. Flashing roms ands modems thru recovery won't lose your unlocked SIM info. First thing I would do is update your recovery. Then you can flash a new JB rom. A lot of newer roms depend on TWRP recovery. You can find that here in the original android development section. Read carefully and follow the install via .zip way. Since you're on tmobile I'd read the post just before this one about JB and what modems are working best. I'm on at&t so I can't help you there. They also remark on what roms they are running. You can follow their lead, or check out all three available roms in the development selection. Again read the developers directions, and make sure the rom is for your device before you flash anything. Then enjoy!
I didn't see any mention of having installed a custom recovery. If the OP hasn't done that he can still update to the latest stock rom using Kies Air. He can get that from the app store.
Being rooted has nothing to do with any of this. Rom flashing only depends on having 1) a pc with Odin and a working usb port, or 2)having a custom recovery already installed.
Flashing a custom rom won't affect the radio you already have, but if you update to the JB stock rom it will flash the current baseband (modem).
Unlocking is permanent. No flashing can change that phone back to a locked state.
Yes, you need a 4G LTE sim card, but under even best conditions you will mostly see 4G only (HSPA+ ).
I might be wrong, but to use T-Mobile's LTE you have to use a stock AT&T Rom. I'm in Houston and we just got LTE here.

You can use your choice of stock or custom roms with LTE.
UCLF6, UCMB4, UCMD3 can all be used under ICS, JB custom roms. 4.0.4, 4.1.2, 4.2.2 or the likes. Cyanogenmod, paranoid, slim, padawan, it doesn't matter.
On anything but stock samsung you can *#*#4636#*#* into dialer then phone options to change between lte and wcdma or all. Also available under settings/mobile network/preference.
Those are the 3 most current modems with access to LTE. UCLF6 being from the official ICS last year.
