So my aunt has am AT&T Galaxy Note on T-Mobile and I told the store she purchased the phone from to flash the T-Mobile radios so that she can get 4G HSPA+ but the device is stuck on gingerbread and I would really like to update it to stock Jellybean with Touchwiz? If I use Odin to flash the latest update will she lose her unlock? But then will it need to be unlocked now that T-Mobile has 4G LTE in Las Vegas? I figured all she would need to do is buy a new T-Mobile 4G LTE compatible SIM and then use that but I'm not sure. Can the new firmware be rooted and can it be unlocked if need be? Also, she broke the mirco-usb port so is there any way that I can flash to stock without the use of that port? I'm really sorry for all the questions but if anyone could answer them I would be very grateful.
If the usb port is broken, you won't be able to use Odin. Is the device rooted? If it is there is hope! If not, you're up the river without a paddle.

I know right but luckily the device is rooted and because the shop said they flashed the T-Mobile radios, I believe it has a custom recovery on it.
Whew! I'm glad to hear you're already rooted. You can forget about Odin now. Flashing roms ands modems thru recovery won't lose your unlocked SIM info. First thing I would do is update your recovery. Then you can flash a new JB rom. A lot of newer roms depend on TWRP recovery. You can find that here in the original android development section. Read carefully and follow the install via .zip way. Since you're on tmobile I'd read the post just before this one about JB and what modems are working best. I'm on at&t so I can't help you there. They also remark on what roms they are running. You can follow their lead, or check out all three available roms in the development selection. Again read the developers directions, and make sure the rom is for your device before you flash anything. Then enjoy!
I didn't see any mention of having installed a custom recovery. If the OP hasn't done that he can still update to the latest stock rom using Kies Air. He can get that from the app store.
Being rooted has nothing to do with any of this. Rom flashing only depends on having 1) a pc with Odin and a working usb port, or 2)having a custom recovery already installed.
Flashing a custom rom won't affect the radio you already have, but if you update to the JB stock rom it will flash the current baseband (modem).
Unlocking is permanent. No flashing can change that phone back to a locked state.
Yes, you need a 4G LTE sim card, but under even best conditions you will mostly see 4G only (HSPA+ ).
I might be wrong, but to use T-Mobile's LTE you have to use a stock AT&T Rom. I'm in Houston and we just got LTE here.

Not an ATT rom.... but an ATT MODEM.
That and setting the fast.t-mobile.com APN will give access to T-Mobile LTE.

You can use your choice of stock or custom roms with LTE.
UCLF6, UCMB4, UCMD3 can all be used under ICS, JB custom roms. 4.0.4, 4.1.2, 4.2.2 or the likes. Cyanogenmod, paranoid, slim, padawan, it doesn't matter.
On anything but stock samsung you can *#*#4636#*#* into dialer then phone options to change between lte and wcdma or all. Also available under settings/mobile network/preference.
Those are the 3 most current modems with access to LTE. UCLF6 being from the official ICS last year.

I tried to update my I717 (AT&T) and have nothing but access to restore or download mode...it errored out, then I didn't do the emergency backup right away. When I tried to do it later, I get about 96% of the way done, and it errors out....

I don't think there is a dependence on which recovery you use but more of a recommendation. I've flashed many ROMs with CWM that the developer recommended using TWRP and they worked just fine. So, long as you do the procedure right, it doesn't matter what recovery you use.

So I unrooted the phone using 2a.) Flash the UCKH7-CL503881 stock kernel and system package using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313659) and did a factory reset. The only thing I can't do is to lock the phone back to AT&T sim cards, so pretty much the phone still unlocked. I still have the same problem, every time I pop that DOCOMO SIM card in and look at the phone status, it still shows roaming when I know that's not the case.
Do you think if a change the modem/radio it will go away?

You dont want to re-lock the phone, if thats even possible.
but being that your on a stock at&t ROM, the fact that your on a different carrier than at&t, the phone probably just thinks its roaming.
You could try an international ROM, if you hellraise it, or grab a ported one from the ported dev section.

I was able to locked the phone with samsung galaxy unlock app from the market and unlocked it with the same app. You are right, because the phone is on a different carrier than at&t it thinks that is roaming when we know it's not. I flashed Shostock2 v2.2.6 w/cherrypicker v1.1 and I still get the roaming status. Schostock2 is a i9100 ICS base rom but that didn't work, don't get me wrong I'm loving Shostock2 it's just annoying having that r right next to the signal bars.
Hey guys Long time creeper first time poster.
Anyways i picked up a galaxy note yesterday that was bricked for about $175. The guy had soft bricked it recovery and download were still accessible so i simply used odin to reinstall stock rogers from Da_G's thread. The guy said he bricked it because he had a JB rom on there and wanted to go back to stock but odin froze and thats how the system bricked.
Anyways right now i have the system working and running Stock ICS from Rogers. The current issue i am facing is that there is some sort of issue with the signal. The device jumps between Virgin mobile(my provide) and emergency only. Constantly i cannot get a reliable signal on the phone. Calls constantly fail and messages rarely send.
I have tried flashing the stock radio for rogers from Da_G's thread as well but no luck. The apn is correct and ive tried turning LTE off, no success at all. Does anyone in the community have any suggestions this is a really frustrating problem!
Thanks

Can i flash any tmobile ROM? like this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2682608
I recently flashed a MIUI ROM from our verizon thread and noticed it worked decently with either a tmobile sim or our own Verizon LTE.
I also recently flashed this T-mobile ROM :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292054
which was posted on the T-mobile thread but had our verizon kernal in the list of downloads, with success.
So my question is this: can i flash any Tmobile ROM as long as it doesn't include a kernal and radio and of course access the network settings to change it to LTE/CDMA.???

Probably not. Most ROMs are tightly integrated with their kernel; if you flash just the ROM and not the kernel, lots of things will likely not work well.
I think you should make a little list of the ones you have success with though... [emoji1]

Yeah, if you're one of the lucky few with the MDK bootloader or a developer edition phone.
But you still probably need to flash the entire ROM, including the kernel that supports it, assuming you're one of the lucky ones.

You can run any rom you like if you've flashed the right version of recovery. There are several 4.4.2 roms available if you want to run the latest. Depending on your area, you may get as good a signal with an att modem. Personally I'm running the BlownFuze 4.4.2 with the UVLG3 modem, with no major issues.

Any JB and up roms, you will need to flash gapps again, but your apps will come back when you log in your gmail. Just read the OP for rom you use and there will be a link to appropriate gapps, though many are the same.
If your new though, I would advise you to read up a bit. Nobody is going to replace your phone if you dont understand and as far as I know, nobody has invented a time machine yet.

Hey now!
I just rooted/flashed my AT&T Galaxy S5 with AllianceRom - Build 3 to use with T-mobile.
I would like to know if I can get wifi-calling and VoLTE to work with my phone with this ROM or would I need to download the stock Tmobile ROM in order for it to work?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
Your post would fit better in your custom ROM thread, where 99% of the readers will be using the same ROM. Here, only a minority of people will have any specific experience with that ROM.
Does your custom ROM include wifi calling? Are people reporting wifi call success or failures in the custom ROM thread?
Has your custom ROM been updated to include the recent VoLTE update e.g. the equivalent of G900TUVU1BNF6? If so, you should be fine. You have a locked bootloader, but AFAIK that shouldn't interfere with wifi calling. You just need the features configured in the ROM.
Given your locked bootloader, you should do your research before you flash firmware from another carrier. Trying to flash a TMB bootloader, kernel or possibly even stock TMB recovery may put your bootloader in a position of having to choose between incrementing Knox or bricking your phone for you. And we're assuming that you wouldn't want that.

VoLTE is modem specific. If you don't have the T-Mobile modem, you won't have VoLTE (so unless you want a brick, do NOT flash the T-Mobile radio to your ATT device. You will NEVER have VoLTE) I didn't have VoLTE until i flashed the NF6 (first update to include VoLTE) modem. Even with a T-Mobile device. Once i flashed the full tar that included the modem to NF6, i got VoLTE. So you will never have that.
As far as WiFi calling, as long as its present in the frameworks and ROM, last i understood, it should work. I know when i had my S4 people flashed a T-Mobile ROM to their ATT S4 and had WiFi calling. So long as you have a T-Mobile SIM as well. Ensure the ROM supports it as fffft stated.

If root is broken on your phone, then redo your root. It certainly isn't broken for all ATT phones. Nor is the Alliance ROM likely to be broken for ATT phones i.e. 900A either. And of course you can use towel root. It's a good habit to do a forum search before posting.. then you'd be able to pose better informed questions.
To use towel root, you simply have to use a pre June 3rd stock ROM as a base. If necessary, use Odin to write a pre June 3rd 4.4.2 ATT firmware to your phone.

I used towel root in the first place to get my phone to install roms. I've no problems with root with AT&T roms.
Forgot to mention but the Alliance rom that I tried to install was made for t-mobile so I can use wifi-calling/ISIS. That might be the reason why root doesn't work?
If anyone is able to install tmobile specific rom on their AT&T s5, please help me out.

Also good to know about the modem so that means we r f'd with volte unless the very unlikely att/verizon bootloader is unlocked.

Thanks!

I had the ATT gs4 using it with Tmobile and had the same issue and never solved it. Im not saying it cant be done but I was told I might be better off just trading my s4 for the tmobile version .. Ended up just buying a Tmobile s5 .. Also my bootloader was locked on my ATT s4 and that was reason enough to dump ATT . No kernels = No att for me
If you find a solution for wifi calling let me know. I do have a buddy with att s5 asking me about it

I too am trying to figure this out. Also trying to find backups of any useful stock T-Mobile apps I don't have because of this being an AT&T S5...

I posted the solution in another thread. Basically, with a combination of the OA1 ATT firmware, safestrap and Alliance Rom, you can achieve Volte and Wifi calling with a tmobile sim card on a G900A.
edit:
- added link
- be careful not to take the OC4 update from ATT, or it will not work.

How can I make sure I'm not on the OC4 update? I am new to messing with anything AT&T...
Thank you so much! I'm going to give it a try soon.

You can go to About Device in the settings, and look at the last three characters of the Base version field. If you see NCE, ND3, NG3 or OA1 you're fine.
It seems that I can try to follow the instructions on this thread but not sure what ATT firmware I should be installing since new updates have been released since OA1. Can someone tell me if I should install entire Tmobile ROM including modem with Odin?

Guys, I have some great news. Both wifi calling AND VoLTE now work on my SM-G900A on the T-mobile network. Here is what I did:
I installed the latest ATT firmware (OA1), released earlier this February. OTA update did not work, so I had to flash the original firmware (ANCE) via Odin, and then flash the two subsequent updates using update.zip on the SD Card. This will remove safestrap and root, but fear not.
Once my phone had AO1 installed, I used this tutorial to root the phone again. It invonves temporarily flashing an earlier (ND3) kernel, using TowelRoot, and then reflashing the OA1 kernel
With my OA1 rooted, I installed safestrap. Make sure you install busybox first.
With safestrap, I installed the T-mobile Alliance Rom (build B4).
Seconds after booting, both Wifi Calling and Voice over LTE work!
Enjoy!
Guillaume
