[Q] USB cable - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a USB cable from my old Nokia E series so I plugged it in my Atrix and see the phone charged, connected to PC. Is there any harm to the Atrix of doing that for long period? If not I can use it as office charger for the hungry Atrix. Thanks

I use three different cables for mine and only one is the OEM. One is the one for my touchpad and one is from an older (non-moto) phone. It will be fine.

ya you will be fine i also have use a assortment of none OEM cables and have not has any sort of issue

only issue I found is that when I use my gf's LG charger the screen becomes non responsive, but as soon as i unplug it it comes back. only doesn't work when plugged in. but it still charges fine.

I got same issue on mine. That's bit annoying actually.
@ OP
It still being micro USB, it isn't a motorola stuff but a general standard... It may probably be slower to charge.
You can read about it on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Charging_ports_and_accessory_charging_adapters
(I can't link as I don't have enough posts, sorry)

some cables have better quality even if not branded. try it out on your pc, connect a lot of devices so the electricity consumption increases and if the Atrix doesn't lose connection it's a good cable.
btw, the problem with the touch screen happens with all capacity touch screen devices due to itself works with static. some chargers/cables will give you this problem and there are even some models (mostly Motorola) that get affected easily, although Atrix is not one of them, yay!

I got a RocketFish gold-plated 5-pin for about $15 at Best Buy. Much better than the OEM charger. Works with anything.

Never, I mean NEVER, buy cables at best buy. As long as you didn't buy an hdmi cable from there its not too bad I buy my cords online from amazon usually. Where i can get ones that work just as well for a couple dollars or less. Perfectly good hdmi cords for $1.50 lol. 6 foot micro-usb gold plated as well for a couple dollars... from amazonbasics

I tried once to use the apple charger with a mini usb cable to charge another phone and it didn't work. I think Apple may have messed with the pin outs or something

I don't see how apple could have messed with the pin outs, because the USB A cable that plugs in your pc must have the +5 G Data + and Data - in a specific order for it to work on your pc.
and as far as i can see the 3 pin > usb adapter is just a step down transformer with a Female usb port on it so should work unless its not actually outputting +5v that may be a reason why it didn't work.
ive used a non apple ac to usb one no problems, and i agree with the above, theres no way they could have messed with the pinouts or it wouldnt be usb anymore... i see no reason why it shouldnt work, might have to take one outta the box and try (got a few here at radioshack)
I have tried it and it works...simple really
I use one every night, works for me for charging (but I hate the shiny white color, grawr!) ^_^
Yep, I've tested it and it works just fine.
OTOH, the cheap $4.95 car charger my wife bought online doesn't seem to be able to charge my G1, her Blackberry, or any other phone. The light comes on and the phone says "Charging" but the charge level never actually increases.

I got this for my old TyTn 2 and it works fine with the Dream and the car charger is HTC branded,
The cradle is a little loose for the dream but you use the dash of the car to kind of balance it in and its fine.

X2 almost unresponsive when plugged in

Does anybody else have an issue with their X2 when it's plugged in to either the wall or computer of the screen not responding like normal thus rendering the phone completely useless while charging? It doesn't happen every time, but probably 35% of the time which is still more than it should. And it's not just my phone either, my wife's X2 does it as well and all 3 of the X2's I've had have done it on both stock and eclipse.
Just wondering if anyone else has ran into this issue.

I believe the charger is to blame not comlatible. Not every charger is setup with same pins or wattage... if ur mis-matching equipment.
MIUI X2
I have noticed this. With mine the keyboard becomes sluggish and the lockscreen is hard to unlock. I have eclipse now and it hasn't done that yet.

I have five different USB cables and they all work fine. I've never seen this issue before. Weird!
Sometimes mine does this not sure what causes it. Seems like phone is usually warm when it does. maybe it gets too warm with screen and charging at same time. i have had it happen with every ROM even stock.

I've used my old Crackberry charger along with my usb cord for the cpu, car and wall chargers. Havent had this problem. Strange......
Today it hasn't happened on the same cable at work.
Mine doesn't seem to take issue with any specific charger or cable except for one which is the one that was sent with my wife's phone from verizon, screws both of them up, and it's a moto charger with the same voltage/amperage as the other moto ones, but it has a 9 ft cable.

Interesting it has happened on vz provided chargers. Do theyhave the Moto M on them, or sonething else?
Mine specifically is 5.1V~850mA. Has a USB cable. Has a port we can plug a cable into.
I'd be curious what everyone else has. I wouldn't think it's the cable itself but working in technology, I've seen stranger things.

It could be one of two things, either:
1. you're using a usb cable with a broken data pin.
2. you're using a charger that doesn't output enough current.
the problem lies in a lack of available current in a certain charging state, a "fast charge" if you will. you get either not a high enough sustained supply voltage, or "dirty" power (essentially a little AC in your DC) and that really screws with the capacative touchscreen.
with a bad cable, the phone thinks it's plugged into a charger and not a usb port so it will try to draw up to 850ma from a port that can only feed 500ma if you're lucky.
with a bad charger, or one incapable of supplying the required current, you get "DC ripple" where your voltage fluctuates up to half a volt or more, 60 times every second. generally your phone will get very warm under this condition as well.
so it could be a cable, a charger or a combination of both.
some car chargers are notorious for making dirty power... so are some cars...

Oddly enough I have zero problems with the car chargers, the phones work fine when plugged into them.
Yeah the newest cable is one that is USB and 9 ft long but not moto one that verizon sent with my wife's phone. The moto one that came with mine an the two moto ones I got from Amazon I don't have any issue with but the cables are so stinking short they are a pita to use anyway (2' cables).
I've also noticed that the USB ports on different computers charge at different rates as well. My work computer will barely charge the phone and sometimes can't even maintain the battery level if I'm using it. My laptop at home charges it pretty good but you can't use the phone because you get the screen issue again.

Yeah, I have had this same issue for quite some time and after reading this forum tonight I tried a new charger and BAM, problem fixed! I had thought it was my phone, but it was definitely the charger. The one I was using was the Verizon 9ft charger they send out with replacement phones. Model: B141000. Black with green on the back. Gave my wife my charger that came with the DX2 to take to work and use because I liked this big long cord. So for months now whenever I tried to use the phone while it was charging it lagged so bad I would have to continuously unplug it and plug it back in when I was finished. Needless to say, having a text conversation when battery was almost dead was really annoying...
So when I read this post tonight I went up and grabbed my old Samsung charger from my old Samsung Fascinate and sure enough it worked just fine... No lag what so ever. So I am guessing it is an issue with the DX2 and the generic Verizon charger they send with replacement phones not being compatible...
Furthermore just as a test I just tried the actual 9ft USB cord with the Samsung plug you plug into the outlet and its still working fine... So I assume its the Verizon plug part not putting put enough voltage or something. Pretty happy that I can seemingly still use my 9ft cord! So if you have a spare plug I would say give it a try!

Picky charge port?

Hey, so I just upgraded from a sensation and I am having weird issues with some USB cables.
When I use the 1 USB cable that I have with my Anker 9000mah astro2 battery pack, a cable that works just fine plugged into my sisters Nexus 4 and my old sensation, it won't charge! If I pull it to the side in either direction or stick my thumbnail in between the cable and port THEN it charges; but if I stick the same cable into my HTC wall plug, it charges with no issue! WTH?
Then if I take my official HTC cable and plug it into the Anker and my phone it charges with no issue either??? It also doesn't like the shorter cable that Anker provides with its chargers, no matter what that's plugged into. And it has an issue with another shorter USB cable that I use to charge the Anker battery.
But it works with every other cable so far.
Is this common? Does anybody else find their port is picky? Not sure if I should replace it, don't see the need yet as it's only with a few cables so far.
Thanks.

This phone isn't particularly picky, however, it becomes VERY apparent when you're using a low-quality cable with this phone.
For mine, it works 100% A-OK with like 7/8 cables I've tried, however, every so often I'll find one ****ty cheap china cable that doesnt let my computer see my phone, and makes my phone get uncomfortably hot when charging.
It's more picky than my old Inspire, but mostly it's just a matter of not using ****ty cables.

Huh. Well maybe it's a good thing its picky, early warning system I guess Haha. Still weird that my phone doesn't have problem with one cable if it's plugged into the wall but does if it's plugged into my anker.
I went ahead and ordered 2 original HTC cables for $4 on Amazon to replace the cables it doesn't like, we'll see if the phone works with them like my original cable that I'm using right now. Fingers crossed.

OEM micro USB cable

Does anyone else's G3 not like any micro USB cable other than the OEM that came with it? I've bought half a dozen micro USB cables here and there and my G3 keeps giving me an error that the cable is incompatible and that I need to use the cable provided.
I'd really like to use a 6', possibly fun, flat, and/or braided. Any suggestions?
The G3 is really weird about USB cables. Sometimes I have seen even the OEM one it came with called incompatible even with the OEM charger. At the same time, a cheap Walgreens cable will (usually) work. The OEM charger is 1.8amp and identical to the G2 charger. I have used everything from Motorola chargers from Droid3 to Asus chargers for N7, to an old Apple white cube and they all work, usually.
The best 6ft cables I have ever used are the cheap but gold-plated Monoprice ones. They pretty much always work, regardless of the charging block.

It's such a frustrating crap shoot. I bought a 3' at Five Below that my G3 likes just fine but the more expensive ones I've tried keep getting rejected. I'll try the Monoprice and see if I have any problems. Thanks for the help.
Mine G3 like mideabridge USB 2.0 from amazon but 5-6ft I think.
I have two of them one wore out fast the other works great.
The only problem I have is interferes with my bumper case.
I have one other cable that the G3 lines but it is short 1 ft or something and I don't remember were I got it, probably amazon.
I have tried multipal cables on the same charger.
My monoprice car charger will do fast charge with the right cable(OEM or Meadia brige)

I use the verizon branded fonas 6 ft 2.1 A micro usb led on tip AC charger and the plain non vz one. Both work just fine.
Used anker 1' that came with my astro e4 13000mah battery.
I try to barely use the original charger to keep it nice for resale. Plus my chargers are a bit faster and are thus better for phones battery health anyway.
I hope the free battery and charger hurry up and get here!

I had to contact LG and email them my info since I bought my G3 before the promotional period. I hope they make a decision in my favor
I have a 6' cable from target and it works just fine with my 2.4A charger. I only had an issue once but it was due to an app causing a problem and running in the background and draining the battery. Got rid of it and its fine now. No issues except that one

LG G5 Charging Cables

I'm just wondering, what charging cables people use for the LG G5. I have the Quick Charge 3.0 by Aukey, but the cable that came with the phone seems to be a hit and miss with full charging speed. I find when you unplug it and plug it back in, sometimes the charging speed will jump up.

Besides the cable that came with the phone I bought a couple of USB 3.0 Type A to Type C cables made by Anker from Amazon. I forgot how much they cost but I can assure you that quality is top notch and performance is excellent.

I've heard a lot of people complain bout LG phones with 3rd party chargers. The charger would support quick charge, but phone won't. I think LG blocks some 3rd party chargers. Because some chargers wouldn't work, but switch rom and they would. That is straight bs of LG to pull.

I just got my friends who have LG G5's an AUKEY QC 3.0 charger and told them to use the cable that came with their phone for now. I do need to recoommend some USB-C cables to them that are capable of QC 3.0, but yes from all I've read, quality of cables is a major issue. Some work and some don't even the manufactures on Amazon don't know how to answer questions about their products when you ask.

I've noticed it doesn't seem to charge nearly as fast as LG claims it should. It takes the standard 2-3 hours, depending on what battery % it's at. I try to not let it go below 30% when I can. It doesn't even say fast charging anymore, just charging..
I think the cables are still too expensive. Also, I have so many micro USB cables
I bought 5 adapters on ebay ( 4,50€ here in Germany ) from MICRO- USB to USB Type C. So far everything has no problems and yes QC3.0 on my Anker PowerBank works as well.
