Why do custom roms include CRT off effect? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This effect just looks so weird and ugly, my phone is not a CRT TV why would I want this effect on it? They theme our ICS to look like stock but they include this nasty effect why what is the appeal? To all custom rom makers please stop now and include it as an add-on but don't force this weirdo crap on us, thank you.

lol me neither liked it but you see more ppl like it, and as developers are working free for masses they will do what masses like.
there should be a fix for removing it though.

Use a rom which doesn't have it. Easy fixed. Anyone worried about 'cosmetics' like this should get an iPhone (and has too much time on their hands).

You can turn out it off with deluxe settings. It's included in every GB custom ROM.

I think it looks awesome. I don't know why you wouldn't want it! Sometimes when I'm bored I'll just just toggle my screen on and off just to look at it

By the looks of it - and from the comments above - I can only get to one conclusion about the CRT effect:
Taste like an arse: everybody has their own and think everybody else's stink.

[Q] screen orientation animations

So as you know with the new motoblur ui there are these nifty (And in my opinion sexy ;3) turn animations. but what i want to know is, if i switch to a rom lets say cm7 or the soon to come miui, would there be any possible way to get these animations back or get any animation when i turn the screen at all? i hate the simple "Turn the screen the screen turns" its blocky and 8 bit to me. and please dont chop my head off if this was already asked :3 I looked through the forums and couldnt find anything like this.
-thanks in advance

If it's any help, I've flashed all sorts of gingerbread ROMs (currently running Nottach's Darkside vI.4 with his Evoluer theme) and it has remained present.
I'm with you, I like it as well. I don't think you have to worry about it disappearing.
Granted, don't quote me when it comes to CM7.
I'm not sure but if you use certain launchers, you could get those animations back. I haven't seen the motoblur ones but i saw a youtube review of some launcher which had a screen orientation animation which looked like the iOS one, just as smooth but about 1 second longer.
Alas the ONLY down side to rocking cm7 imo. That rotation animation is so sexy and was the only thing I felt android was missing. Someone would have to figure out how to take the animation from blur and make it compatible with cm7. Which I am fairly certain is much easier said than done. That being said maybe with the new version of android coming out soon, perhaps google will add it into ice cream sandwich. And if that happens then I expect we will see it in future cyanogen roms.

Recognized Developer wants your input for a rom.

Hey all. Developer of several roms and tools here. Planning on working on the amaze 4g. So I've come asking your opinions.
What do you want in a rom?
What are the biggest issues you have with your current setup?
What are the features you'd like to see in a kernel?
What are the current issues you have with your kernel?
Please note I do not currently own an amaze. My girlfriend does, but I can not always test on her device. This will have to be a community effort for testing.

First off, hell yes and thanks for coming over.
We have multiple Sense 3.0, one 3.5, and an ICS WIP...
I would love to try MIUI or AOSP. Even a solid 3.5 would be nice.
Long battery life and snappy UI always preferred.
Thanks again!

****...what don't we want in a ROM?
Is there any way you can help with some of the WIP Ports found on this section. I would like to test those out.
We have way too many Sense 3.0 ROMs. Don't get me wrong, they're all pretty good, but like the members who have already posted before me, AOSP is what this phone really needs right now.
In a ROM, the first thing I look for is performance. Since I always run third party launchers such as GO Launcher Ex and ADW Launcher Ex over HTC Sense, the ROM needs to be able to be smooth while on those launchers (some ROMs lag like hell on these launchers when wallpaper scrolling is turned on). The second thing I look for in a ROM is the miscellaneous stuff such as theme, icons, Beats, DSP manager, etc. Battery life is pretty important too.
The biggest problem in my current set up is the lack of fluidity. Yes, the phone is fast, but with the Sense ROM framework, I feel that the Amaze's speed can never be as fast as if it were on an AOSP ROM. I also found that the video playback on YouTube often lags, which is really a pain in the ass.
Currently, we only have one kernel other than stock, which is Faux's kernel. It works for some ROMs and doesn't for others, so I usually just stick with stock. I do miss the under/overclocking and undervolting though.
I'm not sure how many people share my opinions regarding this subject, but I hope I've been some help. Anyways, glad you're planning to develop for the Amaze!
Hell yeah, bring the Amaze Dev Forum back to life <(-_-)> !!
What do you want in a rom? AOSP ROM
What are the biggest issues you have with your current setup? Battery Life/LCD Bleed/Sense ROM's
What are the features you'd like to see in a kernel? OC/UV - Govenor Options
What are the current issues you have with your kernel? - Above
AOSP for sure.

MIUI is all I want. If you can get us that, you would be my hero and I would shout your name from the rooftops! Can you hear it? starskyrob, starskyrob, STARSKYROB!!!
i actually like sense, sure its a ram hog, but it has an amazing music app, and other things
I would like to see a rom AOSP with a very good battery life tho

Great to have another developer welcome! and thanks in advance.
here are some of my suggestions as I have tested more than a few of the limited amount of roms available for the amaze.
1. I think the most important things that we want to get out of a rom and kernel here is, first a good, sorry a great battery life and possible more free ram (beastmod does a great job of this). I have tried a lot of roms but battery is an issue with all of them and the difference is marginal.
2. We have lots of roms that incorperate sense UI's, and sensless UI's I would like to see a rom that incorporates another UI.
3. All the roms I've tested seem to have the basic enhanced notification quicksettings and advanced power menu. I would like to see a tweaking tool or tweaking in the settings for being able to tweak a lot of things...such as turning on HW accelleration. Lockscreen settings, (icon grid tweak, ie put change the number of icons both in drawer and in the main home screens, I know there are third party launcher, but it would be great if this was built into the rom), just lots of tweaking, look at adwlauncher ex and go launcher ex and maybe there are some good ideas there. just as much tweaking and advanced tweaking as possible , both hardware and software related.
4. A different and more customizable and tweakable dialer, something like we see in CM 7.
5. I can't think of anything else right now!!! I'll post more if i can think of any
One thing I'd like to see is the features find in aokp and from romanbb. I think he works mostly on the SGS2, but those tweaks (mainly notification bar with time, quick settings, colors, etc.) would be awesome.

1st of welcome to the community, and try to get people's opinions.
as you can see me and a lot of guys would like to see MIUI and AOSP rom witch are different from sense
somebody here is working on a cm7 rom and for a aosp rom i prefer cm7 because its tmobile theme chooser app, and with cm7 you can run miui.
it would be nice to port others roms like a good sense 3.5,3.6 or sense 4
many of us are waiting on ICS, but i can wait longer with that.
oh and man had you seen all the tweaks from the sensation?
like the blueray cam feature or the bravia feature?
plus other tweaks from settings like coredroid?
Plus one to all the things!

i'd like to see MIUI, MIUIv4, CM9, AOSP 2.3.7...
they are just a few that would be pretty cool to see.
you could also try a weird os like LeWa <-- based off cm7
Increased battery life is my main fault with this phone.
Somehow increase signal strength, I know, wishful thinking.
That's about it!
I'm trying to get my feet wet with developing but am having a hard time getting anything working in CM7, I think I almost have the camera working, along with either Bluetooth or WiFi.
But what I would love is an aosp kernal!!!

AOSP. Could care less about another ROM built off of sense.
i'll say, do what you are best at.. that's it.
it doesn't matter if it is aosp, miui.. anything will do
BUT if it is android 4.0.3 IT'S BETTER !!

ID it me or every1 are missing something...

Well,
Im a biiiiiiig fan and wanna Thanks EVERYONE here and out there pushing these projects! :-D
But...
Its like every rom is missing something
CM9 - no video calls... Donno if its gapps or cm but common my nokia 5 years ago could do it...
The rest basicly miss everything else that is in CM9 with variations..
So here is my perfect-wish-ROM
Video calls
Silent hours
Minimal Google crap
Option for transparancy in contacrs/other system menus
All the 16 toggles and stuff with the bars
JKay like lock screen Option (Also tabs)
Customixable menus
I mean just mash it up do 1 that has all :-D
What u guys think?

Seriously, I think you should start working on your own.
If you can't find one out there already that fits your criteria, then start modding until you get it how you want.
Everyone's tastes are different.
Edit to add: oh - and the reason there is no video calling from the dialer on CM9 is because that feature requires certain Samsung framework components which are built into TouchWiz. Since CM9 is AOSP and doesn't utilize any Samsung framework components... well... you get the picture, right?
Im really sorry if i offended u in some way... I ADORE the great work every one does!
I will start working on it gotta learn from scratch but wth having hard times in sc2 neways :-D

You didn't offend me. I'm just telling it how it is. Just throwing out a set of criteria and saying "someone build this" is kind of selfish though. I mean, people don't get paid to put out ROMs. This is a hobby for most of the ROM devs.
If you're referring to the tags, I didn't add those.
You're exactly like the guy who wants USB audio out to a DAC I just replied to in that you obviously don't realise how much work goes into/how difficult it is for devs to get some things working on a custom rom.

ROM request or help learning to make a ROM

I am looking for or wishing to learn how to make a ROM that is almost completely debloated, removed much of Sense (but I wanna keep the lockscreen as I use the four functions that can be there), themed in a red that matches the Beats logo on the back of the phone and/or the soft keys, tweaks would be amazing (quick settings in the sense of removing/re-ordering, WiFi on/off instead of taking you to WiFi settings, custom carrier & lockscreen captions, clock alignment are the big ones), and a custom kernel that allows it to move quickly yet sip battery as much as possible.
Basically, I guess I am looking for something similar to what Scott's ROMs used to be, but at the same time I wanna incorporate more ICS into it.
If anyone is able to build something like this relatively easily I would love it!! If you wanna try to teach me this stuff let me know. I have always wanted to but haven't been able to find the time to research all the details.
Well I'd say as long as you have some experience with code, you could look at source for some roms and start tweaking things and basically find out how things work. If not, then maybe try just flashing mods onto a deodexed stock rom

I've been debating on building my own rom for the rezound and trying to be as stable as possible but i myself dont know where to even start. Been doing small tweaks here and there on a few roms and so far ive managed to put together by scraps a black and red theme and ui but can be time consuming...would love to work on a team and push out something with jellybean

[Q] Question about AoCP ROM

I have a question regarding [ROM/MOD]*TheCollective*[02-26-13] AoCP - CP5<VBTE> {4.2.2} for i717
In review videos I have seen an AoCP options section in Settings but I have flashed this build and do not have that option. Is this deliberately missing in this build?
EDIT:
So far so good with this ROM but I have another question/concern regarding this ROM. So far it's been the most stable ROM I have used, other than stock, but I really do not like the orange system UI. I'm sure some people love it but since blue is my favourite colour, I love the "stock" blue of most Android ROMs and wish there was an easy way to change this. The OP for the AoCP ROM states that there are AoCP themes available in the market but they are all paid themes. I don't think I should have to pay to get my ROM back to stock look. This seems like a cheap nickel and dime scheme. I would much rather donate more money to the AoCP project than pay $0.99 for something that should come stock. Give people the option to pick the orange or blue theme in the theme chooser.
I am not trying to bash AoCP developers, I appreciate the work they have done on this ROM since it is the most stable one I have used (plus it's 4.2.2 while Rogers is stuck on 4.0.4 and still waiting for 4.1.2!), we just shouldn't have to pay not to have the ugly orange UI. This UI would be great around Halloween but other than that, stock blue please! If AoCP does this I would donate more money to their cause rather than buying a $0.99 theme.
to answer your first question it is missing due to this being an early build of 4.2.2 and they haven't gotten everything added in that they want.
The second question: it is their rom and they like the orange color. There is no where that says you have to flash their rom on your phone. They can make it whatever color they want. There are plenty of other theme chooser themes out there that are free that you could apply to the rom, or you could find another rom that suits your color needs. here is a thread on xda that has many themes to choose from

Hi,
Thanks for the input. I was wondering why these options were missing because otherwise, it's not really different than CM 10.1, other than being a lot more stable thankfully, which is definitely worth it!
I agree that they can choose whatever colour that they want for their ROM BUT orange is a colour that you have to really love for a system UI. You don't see Apple, Google, Windows Phone or BlackBerry using orange for their default UIs and that's because it is something that most people will not like. The problem I have is that to get my stock UI colour back, I'm expected to pay them for this. I would much rather donate $10 to their cause as opposed to being nickel and dimed for a $0.99 theme. It wouldn't be hard to give users the choice to switch to the default blue UI. Browsing through the ROM thread, there are many people unhappy with the orange UI. Also, I just want the stock UI, not different icons/fonts/etc. Thankfully with Nova Launcher I can get rid of the ugly orange icons and use the stock Jelly Bean ones but I still get stuck with the rest of the orange UI. Even if I use another theme from someone else, it doesn't get rid of all of the orange. AoCP has deeply embedded the orange UI into every possible place and other themes don't fully get rid of this. So, to fully get rid of it, you have to pay them and like I said, I would pay them MORE to support them rather than have to pay to get rid of the orange. It's simply the principle of it.
The developers make stuff for themselves because they can do that stuff. They only have to please themselves.
They share their work with us, and we can enjoy it or not.
Would it be ok to go to Michelangelo and say "Thats a pretty girl with a nice smile, but most men like blondes. Redo her with blonde hair."
Pay the buck for the theme and stop complaining. Artists are tempermental -- we don't want to lose our developers!

Comparing a developer to Michelangelo is a stretch of the imagination. I appreciate their hard work but developers only have to please themselves if they truly make it for themselves. Once they release it to the public, it's fair game for criticism. I think they would gain more support and donations if this simple change was implemented. Leave the default theme orange but let the user decide via the theme chooser. Like I said already, I would donate more than the $0.99 theme price if this happens.
Even if I do pay them for one of their themes, none of them truly offer the stock experience, which is what I am looking for. One of the reasons why I install ROMs is because I don't like the Samsung stock ROM. I like the vanilla Jelly Bean interface. I also like the modifications that Paranoid Android does with changing the DPI of individual apps but it has proven to be unstable, rebooting multiple times a day. So far, this is the only ROM that has been truly stable so far and my only real problem with it is the orange UI, as other people have voiced as well.
OP-Please read my signature line, and then read it again.....because every word is true.
Developers here exist out of desire to improve their personal devices, and often choose to openly share what they have created with us, FOR FREE. And they take nothing in return. But on occasion, kind members give back to them, as a token of appreciation for the countless hours they spend building code we freely use and enjoy. If you are unable to enjoy their creations, you have the choice to leave your device stock, and trust in the Factory team that calls your device good enough in it's mass produced form.
Developers are artists in their own right, and deserve the respect they have clearly earned.
Perhaps you should create your own ROM, and change the orange UI to something more appealing to your tastes. And share it with us for free after you have spent 100's of hours working on it, using your time and resources. I'd like that very much.
But if you lack the ability or the time to create a non-orange themed rom, perhaps you could just say THANK YOU, to the developer who did, and move on to something less orange.
Happy flashing......g
