Greetings i purchased Galaxy S2 about a week ago, and since then i m trying to learn more about the device, but mostly the software.
Device is ROOTED and currently runs Sensation v3.0 ( ICS )
Firstly, i am not able to find a way to access the external SD card of my phone through a mobile file manager.I can only see the internal storage memory.
Also, i would like to know, which is the best way, to backup my current screen setup, with all icons and widgets, so i can easily try new ROMs.

Backup in recovery mate. Always the easiest option. Then once you are backed up you can try different roms. If you do not like the rom you flashed just restore back. Also if you want to backup only your applications use Titanium Backup Pro from market. You got to spend a few bucks but worth having it. For me it is a must have application
Well the recovery backup, or the Titanium, is not what i am after.Basically what i am asking, is to backup the current folders (app shortcut folders in desktop) and to be able to restore them again in my new ROM, so i don't have to do all the grinding again on the new ROM.

you can still do that with TB. Just when you are restoring your apps with TB restore apps+data and you will have your setup that you are using now.
i have done that before when i was using Go Launcher. Restored my applications with TB and that was apps+data and then setup i had previously was back on my new rom
you can check also that some launchers have the option where you can backup your current setup. check that out in the options settings for the launcher
Well you got a good point there, since launchers take care of this kind of data.I guess, i am gonna try it out right now to see if it really works like that.
thanks

I like to try different roms, but the problem is i always need to insall all my aps en settings. What is THE BEST way to have all my aps i previously had instantly when i install a new rom?
make a nandroid backup before you install a new rom, and restore it when you're done. though i had issues with the apps stored in the ext partition of my sdcard. i'd like to see the ext partition being saved and restored with dd, but for now nandroid does it via tar. usually works, but not always, at least for me. had to wipe just yesterday for this exact reason.

I do this, but i actually want to use my aps on multiple roms. A nandroid backup restores the rom completely, thats not what i want.

You can't! Even if you don't wipe, the APN list is going to be part of the ROM, so will replace any APN list you may have had on your device beforehand.
The best you can probably do is backup your APN list via an application like this, and then install the application again after you've installed a new ROM (assuming you've wiped) to restore the APN list back again.
Regards,
Dave
apn list is not a thing i care about, i know the settings. It's a lot less work than reinstalling 30 aps
if you are using apps2sd then don't backup/restore the ext partition. apps will be kept this way, but not the market db. so if you install an app through the market in the first rom it will be installed in the other rom, but not in the other market.
i don't think there is a way to share the settings. you could theoretically move /data to the ext partition aswell, but it will break at least if you switch between 1.5 and 2.1 roms...

Sorry - when you said "aps en settings" I presumed you meant your APNs rather than your applications.
Titanium Backup is what you need.

Dave
AppManager works well too, although it wont back up protected apps. I just redownload them from Market instead.
Then I use AppsInstaller to reinstall everything. Can be time consuming with 90+ apps but it's better than having to download them all again.
I haven't wiped since I got Titanium so that might work better.
Also, if you look in the Themes and Software section I think there's a PC program that will let you back-up and restore your apps.
So I am switching Aria's, first time doing this with an Android phone. So I basically want to know what is the easiest way to transfer data and apps? I tried using Astro to transfer just apps, from a Droid X to my old Aria but that didnt seem to work. I'm receiving a new Aria very soon and wanted to transfer my data/apps from my old Aria. Oh yea, can I save my rom image as well and transfer? I'm running attn1's liberated rom, not that latest version but not sure if version matters. Thanks.
Is a nandroid back up all i need to do? Which I believe copies all my stuff?
I believe you can use titanium backup (free from market) to backup the app apk's to the sd card. Then transfer the sd card to your new aria. Re download titanium backup and restore apps to new phone. As long as you don't change save locations it should work pretty easily.

This. I just did it for a friend on his MyTouch and it worked flawlessly Only thing that could be an issue (Not sure, I may have missed it, but I don't think you mentioned if you were rooted) is that Titanium Backup is root only as far as I know.
I can confirm, and yes I was rooted on the old Aria and just rooted the new one, that Nandroid backup/restore worked for apps, data, and rom.
So this is my next question. If I now want to try a new rom. I dont think a complete backup/restore of everything is what I want to do. So what is the best way to just save data/apps, wipe device, install new rom, restore data/apps.
If you can suggest me an app, can you also please post steps as I tried titanium and astro file manager and wasnt sure what to do. This may also help others that arent experienced. Thanks again.
Good to know
Again for this I'm going to suggest Titanium because that's what I used to switch from the Liberated Aria ROM to the Clean Eclair ROM.
1. Open Titanium Backup (Make sure your MicroSD is not in Disk mode if plugged in)
2. Tap Backup/Restore
3. Hit Menu > Batch
4. Select whatever action you need.
I believe the 4th option is "Backup all user apps and data"
Should you complete this backup and time passes between the backup and the flash and you want to backup the changes, a little farther down you can select "Backup all new apps and versions" or the "Redo your old backups" (older than 3 days if I recall correctly). System data I believe doesn't have one of these "new" options, but there is an option to back it up independently of your apps.
When you boot up into the new ROM, simply follow the steps again, but this time scroll down to the blue "Run" options, and select the "Restore all missing apps + system data".
That's pretty much the gist of it
Thanks for that, I will try tomorrow and report back.
Ok, so I updated my new phone to the latest attn1 liberated rom(thanks for your work btw, looking forward to next release
I restored all my apps and data, but I noticed some things were not restored correctly. Like my swype for one. My email accounts dont seem to have correct sync settings, if any at all. I think I might have to delete/add email accounts again to get them to sync correctly.
Hi Guys,
I am running the the latest Axura ROM (2.2.5.7 I believe) and have now purchased the premium versions of the following Apps: ROM Manager, Titanium Back Up & Launcher Pro.
With all this awesome capability, what should I do in the way of a back up to restore my phone if something ever happens? Basically my goal is to be able to go into recovery and restore my phone totally if I FUBAR it.
Please keep in mind I just entered this world as of Sunday starting with Rooting and then ROM flashing : D
Thank you for all your help now and in the past!
From another post I made:
The way I have things set up for backups, and this is just for my personal convenience, is as follows...
I have a stock JFD ODIN rom to flash in case anything goes wrong. (A lot of people here will tell you to flash this whenever flashing a new rom. It is safer, and cleaner to do it this way, but not absolutely necessary)
I make a nandroid of my last stable rom (I only keep one at a time cause the files are huge) and keep a backup of that on my PC.
I backup all my apps and a few other things (call logs, bookmarks, sms) through Titanium backup. If you get the pro version, you can load it up after flashing a new rom and have it automatically restore all your apps in one click (system settings can be dangerous to restore when going from rom to rom, so be careful with those.) I also keep a backup of this on my PC.
I will also occasionally backup both of the sd cards to the PC.
Maybe overkill, but you probably wont ever lose anything forever.

Well I just backed up my ROM through ROM manager... I have another one in there too dated Saturday (when I first flashed) which I assume is my stock vibrant ROM...?
I do have the Pro version of Titanium... how would I back up everything for a one click set-up?...If I did that should I just delete my ROM back up in ROM manager? Trying to avoid unnecessary redundancy and the wasting of precious space on my phone : P
Go into Titanium and click on Backup and restore and than click on menu and then batch and then select backup all user apps. then run batch file. You also have the choice to back up system data as well. I would not recommend deleting any of your backups in Rom Manager. Just backup all of your apps(and system data if you wish) and you are good to go.
Thanks all!

Why is that? Nandroid backups are very large, and if you're playing it safe and making a nandroid each time before flashing a rom, you will run out of space very quickly. You should always keep at least one (for me its my most recent, stable, daily driver), but it certainly is NOT necessary to keep all of them.
So I have a custom ROM uploaded on my x10 but I see some others I would like to try. I have Titanium Backup but I am having trouble with it. When I switch the the new ROM will it keep all my apps or will it just keep the .apk so I can install them all again? I have a lot of apps so if there is a way it will keep them all installed as well as contacts that would be awesome. Any help would be awesome, thanks!
Use xrecovery to backup and restore and everything will stay the same.
I just tried that and noticed it leaves it just where i left off, awesome but now I am wondering if I install a new ROM will all my apps/data still be installed?
They will be wiped... but when you reflash your backup, they will be back...

I assume what you want to do is flash a different ROM then re-install all your apps + data within that new ROM?? Titanium will easily allow you to do this, just click menu>batch>backup all user apps + system data. That will allow you to restore all your apps and data by running the batch restore after booting in the new ROM. Once you do that and verify your apps are working etc, I recommend backing up with xrecovery because that makes switching between ROMs a lot easier.
Hopefully that helps you out.

Be cautious though some apps will crash when restored from one Rom to another to be sure restore one at time, or just install the app I used my back up root free from market

Hi guys,
I'm fairly new to all of this, ive been reading up on flashing and the different roms, rooting android devices etc... i personally still using a symbian i know lol but its all modded and flashed so im not a complete noob...
My girlfriend got a sgs2 few months back, i flashed Lightening for her, she thought it was great with the speed and UI of it all..
Last night i showed what MIUI looks like and so i flashed it for, her spent a while setting it all up, she loved it with the masses of customisations etc...
Now i KNOW kies is an utter piece of crap ave had a numerous problems with it and her phone before but not like this...
Basically after flashing MIUI the phone would just not connect to Kies at all, the only thing it would do was come up as a removable drive of which i could not access half the time (told me the disk was empty) - the phone would only give me the option to mount/unmount the SD card NOT the usual "transfer data to pc" so i did all the usual troubleshooting tasks: reboot phone and pc, reinstall drivers, reinstall kies to no avail.
the ONLY reason i need to reconnect to kies is to get all her contacts msgs gallery etc back
I cleared all data and caches when flashing as i know you should when flashing a new rom.. ive only flashed lightening v5 and v6.1 but had no problems whatsoever and i was wondering if there is a known problem/solution to this?
apologies for the long post just wanted to give as much info as possible also she DOESNT have an sd card as of yet other wise i would have just used a 3rd part backup manager to backup/restore from SD card...
i did wonder (AFTER restoring back to Lightening rom backup) would it be possible to 'advanced restore' JUST the 'data' from the recovery menu whilst runnning the MIUI rom or would that just be a complete mess?
Thanks for any help you guys have would be greatly appreciated
**EDIT** - Sorry if this is in the wrong section i couldnt find anything related or a suitable thread after searching quite a bit
As far as im aware kies only recognise stock firmware. Also you could still use the third party apps and save it to the internal storage of the phone no need for external sd card, as you dont need to wipe internal storage when flashing new ROM.
Did you make a backup of the lightening ROM? If so restore it and backup contacts/messages using a third party app and re-flash then restore.
Ricey
Hey Ricey thanks for the reply mate,
Ahh right ok then, i assumed that it would work with all custom roms as it worked fine with Lightening but now i think i know its because lightening is a stock firmware thats been rooted and had some tweaks whereas MIUI is actually custom.
I wasnt aware that it doesnt wipe internal storage when doing a wipe data+cache, until last night when we noticed that all her photos and apks were still on the phone just not apps lol...
I'm assuming that if i use a 3rd party app to backup contacts and msgs etc they WONT be wiped along with all of the other data for the backup app.
1 last question: any recommendations on a backup program from the market? i keep reading about titanium backup but not sure if this performs the task i want it to.
Thanks
**EDIT** sorry forgot to answer your question - yes i did backup the lightening rom and restored it after spending nearly 2 hours trying to find a solution to this problem
Sms backup+ will backup sms to your gmail account, and restore between roms.
Sync contacts to your google account.

They will still get wiped its just gives you a backup to restore once reflashed. To backup contacts just use the stock contacts app, and export to SD. When re-flashing just import from SD using the same method. As for Messages use sms backup & restore off the market by ritesh sahu. The app is pretty self explanatory.
thanks for your input guys, in the end i just used the MyBackup app from the market and i got it all flashed and working correctly..
Now to get customising
