[Q] Unable to enter CWM recovery - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
When I press "Reboot into recovery" in CWM the phone reboots and I then navigate to "Android Recovery" using the volume down key, but when I press volume up to enter Android Recovery I just get an exclamation mark in a triangle along with a little android.
I'm running a stock rom the phone is rooted and the bl is unlocked as far as I know.
Android version 2.3.6 4.5.141

Have you actually installed the cwm recovery…the latest is 5.0.2.0

Of course.

Sounds like you might still have stock recovery loaded. I'd go through and try and install CWM again.

Yea i agree. You should go into rom manager and flash clockworkmod recovery. Also under that option it tells you the current recovery you have and the latest version available.

Well I've just got it to work, no idea why, but after multiple tries(including reboots) I decided to turn the phone off, and now when I turned it back on it works...

I have much the same issue however the error mine shows is "Failed to boot 2"

OK u have flashed the recovery via rom manager but nothing then are u sure u have unlocked bootloader cos until i had unlocked bootloader i was unable to flash recovery and if u do have unlocked bootloader then flash recover via fastboot.

I had the same problem with my wife's atrix. I unlocked the boot loader and flashed cwm. It worked at first but then I got the triangle. I found that the problem is with the stock [email protected] rom. It seems to overwrite cwm after a reboot. After I flashed another rom the issue enter away.

[Q] CWM help.

Forgive my noobishness, but alot if this is still new to me.
My atrix is rooted and unlocked. In preparation for cm7 I decided to flash CWM and make a backup of my current stock rom.
I downloaded the rommanager app from the market and installed CWM successfully. I also used it to make a backup of the rom.
However, when I boot into recovery I get the android guy and exclamation mark. I cant do anything at this point and have to pull the battery and reboot.
What is wrong here?
try installing it again, and are you sure your phone is unlocked? does it says unlocked at the top left corner?
Yes, on reboot it say "unlocked". I installed it again from rom manager, and it told me I successfully flashed. I didnt believe at first since it only took a about 2 secs to complete, but i was able to boot into recovery. Thank for the help.. Im surprised that even worked to be honest.
Another question, lets supposed I wanted to completely remove CWM and install romracers recovery instead. How would I go about removing CWM?

I've had the same problem before. Basically, every time I restored a backup, CWM would crash. It would give me the same thing yours gave you: the Android with the Exclamation point. This could be fixed by reflashing CWM with ROM manager. If you want to install RomRacer's CWM, download the zip for it off of whatever source and out it on your internal storage. Then, from ROM manager, click on "Install ROM from SD card" or something. Choose RomRacer's zip and don't choose any of the wipe options. It should boot into recovery and flash RomRacer's recovery over the ROM manager one.
After installing custom ROMs, I no longer had this problem with the Android and the exclamation point.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Ok this is beginning to get a bit annoying. Basically ANY time I boot into recovery I get the android and exclamation point. If I go into rom manager and flash CWM again, I can reboot into recovery just fine. However, the next time I chose to go into recovery, I get the same problem android and exclamation point.
I decided to install romracers CWM. I used the fastboot method. I erased the recovery partition and flashed the image sucessfully. It rebooted and went into recovery. SAME freaking problem . Android and exclamtion point. I rebooted the phone and entered rom manager again. I attemted to flash CWM from the "FLASH from SD card" option. The phone boots into recovery. Guess what?? Same damned thing. Android and exclamation point.
one last effot, I reflash CWM recovery, then chose 'install from sd card" option and chose rom racers CWM. It boots into recovery, and claims it flashed RR's CWM. I boot into the phones OS and go back to rom manager. I notice that rom managers reports my version of CWM being the same as it ever was (The rom mgr recovery 4.1. something). I choose boot into recovery... and I know you know whats coming now. ANDROID AND!!!!!
Recovery is pointless if I have to relash CWM from rom manager everytime before I use it. If the sh*t ever hits the proverbial fan and I cant boot into the OS I am screwed.
Has anyone ever had or heard of this problem. i would like to have a recovery, that works every single time I need it.
Fastboot flash romracers recovery. That should solve your problem. And leave it alone.

Thanks for the quick reply. However,I did that already.
Code:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
When I boot into recovery, I get the Android and exclamation point. Just to make sure, I did the same thing twice. No luck.
:/
Something is borked. Redownload the recovery and try again.

well I redownloaded Romracers CWM. This time a different file. The red version.
I uninstalled Rommgr app just because. I reboot into fastboot
erase recovery partition.
Flash the recovery image to the recovery partition
reboot and immediately boot back into recovery (without going into the phones OS).
I am greeted with the UI of RR's CWM.
I reboot my phone normally and go back into the phones OS. to test to make sure everything is good...
I reboot into recovery.... and I get android and exclamation point.
I am thoroughly confused and quite frustrated at this point.
Its like once I go into the OS of the phone I cannot sucessfully boot back into recovery.
WTF?!
For clarity's sake I'm on OTA 2.3.4 and am rooted and unlocked
Throw tour phone at the wall and slap it around to let it know who is boss. Other than that I dont know bro. Weird issue. does fastboot -w help any. You have to add erase to that command I forgot.

[Q] Android recovery 3e to 2e?

I read that when you have 3e it doesn't allow you to have CWM. I can only access CWM through ROM manager. If I try to get to CWM with power and vol up, I always get into the default android recovery 3e which leads me to ask, how do I downgrade to 2e?
Are you sure you have a Photon 4G?
Positive

To get to Android recovery you need to press Vol down and power, then go through the fast boot menu by pressing Vol down about 5 times. It should now say Android recovery, press Vol up and it should go into cwm. Works every time for me

pwr+Vol up gives you rsd protocol or fast boot mode.depending on what state your phone is.. power + volume down gives you a few options starting with fast boot then scroll with vol dwn button and selecting with vol up button. On the photon. OP sounds strange as how he gets to recovery lol

then you don't have CWM installed. grab one of the listed ones from here http://www.motosunfire.com/clockworkmod-recovery/ and then install it via moto-fastboot or from the rom managers recovery. then you're good to go. highly recommended by everyone would be jokers v3 or v4 recovery.

if you have cwm installed on your phone and you goto recovery mode and it brings up the standard android recovery then your recovery will not allow cwm to run on your phone untill you downgrade the android recovery
when you goto recovery at the top you will probably see this android recovery (3) if so you need to download gingerbread and flash it with odin after that you should be good . i had the same problem as you and thats how i fixed it

[Q] Cannot enter recovery mode

After installing .21 when I try to enter recovery mode I get this error. My device is unlocked and not rooted.
And the recovery you flashed was?
I get the same error on my prime. I was on .21 and followed the downgrade to .15 unlock and root procedure. The recovery installed is TWRP
Any help please
Try to flash cwm touch, if that worked then flash twrp with it

I've flashed latest cwm through Rom manager and I still get the same error
Try fastboot. A few months back I unlocked too and I flashed normal cwm and I had the same problem. I fixed it by flashing cwm touch. You could also flash any custom kernel with fastboot.

You may have done this correctly, but just in case.....
Volume down + power
Until you see the three lines of text
Immediately release both buttons and press Volume up
Yup, tried it several times. Problem is I never get the three lines of text. Thanks though.

I was having the same problem with not being able to boot to recovery, if you are still having the issue this is what fixed it for me-- re-flash ClockworkMod Recovery to the non-touch version (v5.8.2.0) and then do the boot:
Volume down + power
Until you see the three lines of text
Immediately release both buttons and press Volume up
Good luck.

Odin question

Recently got a used Galaxy Note i717,went to install the ICS update but it would not update thriough KIES.Find out the previois owner had rooted it so I just install the stock ICS firmware manually following a guide I foiund. One problem, when I hold down POWER + VOL.UP I dont get tge screen that lets you wipe cache and what not.
Phone seems to be.working fine so far, been using it a couple days but what happens when I want to install a custom rom?
Any ideas?
Thanks.
If you put a custom ROM, it will wipe your device, which you have to, for installing a Custom ROM, and all custom ROMs are rooted btw. And yes I stay away from KIES...
You might of lost recovery when you install the ICS firmware. Here is the Super Thread with all the tools and ROMs.>>>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740367
If you are rooted, I would put the latest TWRP here>>>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647575
Then just find the custom ROM of your liking and download/install on your device, FTW.
The correct procedure to boot into Recovery is :
Hold power + volume up AND volume down until you feel the phone vibrate THEN release the power button (still holding volume up and down). The phone will then boot into Recovery. It should either be " Clockwork Mod Recovery " or "TWRP". There, you can wipe, install, backup, etc.

Thank you, this kind of worked but what showed up was "Android System Recovery <3e>.
Is this Clockwork or TWRP?
The previous owner rooted it but I cant get hold of him to ask him exactly what he did.
Its neither, it's stock recovery.
You have to flash a file from your pc to the phone to replace stock recovery with a custom recovery like CWR or TWRP.

No, just get in download mode and flash the TWRP odin file (I prefer TWRP over CWR). Reboot and you will go into recovery. Take a few minutes to make a backup of your rom.

It comes down to personal preference really ...
As CWM does a fine job as a recovery. But TWRP has many more features for the user, and seems to provide a much better user experience.
TWRP is clearly better supported, without the common outdated "status 7" errors often found in CWM.
Up to you obviously, but it's TWRP for me ....g
^^^^^ well said, Sarge. I was a CWR user for ten phones and tablets, but I tried TWRP on this phone. Its the bomb-diggity.

[Q] Phone boots to odin mode instead of CWM

I'm running on SCH-I545 everytime I use Volume Up, Power, and Home button combo it attempts to go into recovery but instead it goes to Odin mode instead. I installed CWM correctly I believe through ROM Manager app and when I select to reboot into recovery through the app it does the same thing, When I do boot normally I don't see the custom symbol anymore but my root checker says I am rooted. Am I not rooted correctly. Is my bootloader not unlocked? Please help I really want to install a new rom but I'm still in stock touchwiz

You boot into downloader mode using Volume Down, Power, and Home.
You boot into recovery using Volume Up, Power, and Home.
Since you're booting into downloader mode, you're using the wrong volume button. Use the other one.
Or install Rom Manager or Quick Boot and use them to reboot into recovery.
Still nothing!

I actually foolishly did the same before, installed TWRP and CWMR on ME7. Currently still running stock ROM, rooted. Is there a benefit to ODIN back to stock recovery? When I install safestrap, will the TWRP that comes with safestrap overwrite the other recoveries I installed before?

I havent read everything on the boot process but I believes it hijacks it and sends it into the safestrap im nearly positive it doesnt overwrite the stock recovery. I could be wrong tho. I would reflash the stock image so I would have a stock recovery but thats me.
