[Q] Wi-Fi connection time issue - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys, I have a Motorola Atrix and a small problem with the WLAN. (but i think its a Android problem)
The Wi-Fi Sleep Policy stands on “When screen turns off” to save Battery.
Now, when I unlock my phone it takes a lot of time until the Wi-Fi connection to a known AP is done. The time it takes until the connection is established, is related to the wifi.supplicant_scan_interval in the biuld.prop file.
In my Rom (Neutrino 2.6) it is set to 120 seconds. That means, when I wake up the phone and unlock, the phone turns on the Wi-Fi and then it waits 120 seconds till a Wi-Fi scan performs. After this scan, the phone knows that a known Wi-Fi is in range and the connection will be made.
But I have no desire to wait so long for connection.
Can someone make a script or something else that tells the phone to make a Wi-Fi scan when the device will be unlocked?
Or is there an other solution?

If you're rooted, you can use a root file explorer like Slide Explorer or Root Explorer in Play Store, navigate to /system, find build.prop there, open it with a text editor and change the wifi scan interval to a lesser value and save the new build.prop
Be aware that scanning for wifi too frequently will drain your battery faster.

This is exactly that, what I don't want.
I want a high scan intervall to have a low battery drain. But i want, that the phone do one scan after an unlock.

Why does enabling incoming SIP (internet calls) drain battery so much?

As the subject asks, why does it drain the phone so much?
On my nokia symbian phone, it is connected to my asterisk box 24/7 over wifi and will last for days.
My galaxy nexus will drain out in hours if connected via wifi to my asterisk box.
The SIP qualifys are every 60 seconds.
Has anyone been able to get decent battery life for incoming SIP on ICS?
A somewhat related question I have; does anyone know of an app that will enable incoming SIP only when on wireless?
Thanks
It is because either the app or the build prop on the phone has the wifi scan rate up high. That means it needs to have a stable and solid connection so scanning for the wifi source more regularly ensures it doesn't drop a call or miss a message or what ever.
You can do one of a few things. You can freeze the app using Titanium backup and then unfreeze it when you need to use it and or you can drop the wifi scan rate from what it is now to a higher number i.e. 20 = 20 seconds (thats intervals between scans) and 180 is a large interval between scans. Above 180 and your starting to run the risk of having a call drop out on you if you are not on a solid wifi connection.
I am looking into a way of either modifying the default prop or possibly a script into adjusting the wifi scan rate to enable users to turn the scan rate down when not engaged in a wifi call and then turn it back up if they wish to (i.e. whilst on a wifi call or in a area of poor signal strength).

[Q] Wifi sharing error after 40 minutes

Hi everyone,
I have the following problem:
I turn on WiFi sharing, and connect to it with my PC (Win 7). After a while (40-60 minutes) the sharing stops. The blue icon stays in the notification bar and my PC keeps reporting "connected", but nothing goes through. I cannot ping the internet, and sometimes not even my phone (sometimes pinging 192.168.43.1 works, sometimes not). I run Gingerbread 2.3.4.
If I turn off WiFi sharing and try to turn it back on, it reports "Error" on the phone, but if I now try again it works flawlessly for another 40-60 minutes.
I tried Barnacle WiFi Tether (it was even more unreliable), and some other types of Tethering apps.
I don't want to use USB tethering, because sometimes I need to connect with more PCs.
Any solution?
Is that with continous use on wifi? I.e. is there any lengthy periods where you're not actually using data, like reading a document for 10 mins?
My wifi tends to drop the connection after x amount of mins idle, it will show connected also, but it has to be disconnected and reconnected to work again, unless im downloading continously or watching a video (not letting the wifi connection idle).
Its 'normal' from my experience.
One thing you can try however is go to settings --> wifi --> menu key --> advanced and set wifi sleep policy to Never, see how that works for you?
Hi!
No, actually I am playing League Of Legends (an online game) continuosly. The connection seems to hold on longer if I am just browsing the net, but eventually it always gives up.
It was not a problem with ICS 4.0.3, but there the 3G gave up and it was really hard to get the connection back, so it was even more unusable.
Did you try altering the wifi sleep policy? See if that helps
I think the Wifi sleep policy only affects normal Wifi usage where the phone is the client. Anyway, I checked and it is already set to "Never", as you suggested.
Update: I was using XWKI4 with Nimphetamine kernel until yesterday. I have tried KI4-CFRoot kernel too, but that wasn't any better. Finally, yesterday I updated to KL1 stock kernel. I changed only the kernel, so it is a KL1 kernel with an otherwise KI4 ROM.
The sympthoms seem to have disappeared now. WiFi sharing works flawlessly. Fingers crossed...

xperia u and wifi

sorry for my poor english
I have a xperia u no brand no root or anything. I found out that when the phone is connected through wifi - my own domestic line - and goes to deep sleep, after a while - i cannot be more precise since it is never the same amount of time - it loses the connection. It appears to be still connected, since the wifi symbol is still displayed, but cannot receive or send any data. I therefore have to turn off wifi, wait for a couple of minutes, and turn it on again. During this "wifi-sleep" the phone is not aware that is not getting any data, so it won't let 3g take over. I've tried many solutions - change wifi channel, change wifi beacon - but nothing seems to work. Of course I've already set the phone not to drop connection when standby in the wifi menu. the only trick that seems to work is to use apps such as regpon wifi that keep the connection artificially "awake", but this is definitely not a solution since battery drain skyrockets.
thank you in advance

[Q] Turn off wi-fi scanning after connection

Anyone know of a way to turn "Scanning" for wi-fi networks off after you are "Connected" to a wi-fi network thus saving battery? Turning off "Notify me" does not do it.

I think it stops scanning once ur connected and leave the page..if u reopen the WiFi page it scans then stops,at least in mine it does..

From what I've read, this seems to be the way it works. Bottom line it will scan every 4 secs or so while you are on the settings page in case you are trying to connect to a new network, then revert to wifi.supplicant_scan_interval from build.prop when not on the settings page. It's not clear that it has much of a battery impact whatever you set it to. I leave wifi on all the time and whether I am on wifi all day or out and about on lte my battery usage for wifi is negligible.

[Q] Wifi issue in the Xperia X10

So I rooted and loaded the custom ROM on my Xperia X10 exactly following the instructions on the video found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305945 (Installed the ROM specified in the OP of that thread)
It works well, except for one issue. The wifi doesn't connect automatically to my home network even when within range; one second it is connected and the next it disconnects and doesn't re-connect. I then have to go to Wireless settings and wait for it to connect, which might happen immediately or after I select Connect. Sometimes, it just goes through a Connecting-Disconnected loop. Any ideas?
I've already set the sleep policy to Never and forgotten the network and added it again.
Apologies if this was answered before; if it was, I'd really appreciate someone pointing out the solution to me.
Open build.prop in root/system, mount as r/w
Search for this line and change scan interval to 30 second (or fewer) :
Code:
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=30
You're done :beer::thumbup:

From first impressions, that *looks* to have sorted the problem out. Much thanks :good:
Unfortunately, that hasn't solved the problem, even after setting the interval to 10.
The problem goes like this:
I'm within WIFI coverage area of my home wifi, and the first time I switch wifi on, it connects automatically. After sometime, it just disconnects without reason as I'm using my mobile without moving out of coverage area. Now the most irritating part is that it doesn't connect automatically again. I'll then have to go to my wifi settings, select my wifi network (which proves that it's still in range) and select connect again. This again doesn't work all the time, and sometimes it just goes through the scanning->connecting->disconnected cycle. wifi sleep policy is set to Never fwiw.
I want to know how to stop it from disconnecting randomly even when within range, and connect automatically when in range, as this is extremely infuriating to use now
Is this a known issue with the mod that I'm using? If so, is there any other mod that I can use?
PS - The wifi was alright in the original SE device before rooting.
I have had this happen too.
I'm using DoomKernel V6 [root] on GB 2.3
Wi-Fi is active in a Wi-Fi coverage area with a stable connection and good signal.
Screen times out and after some time the phone is used again and screen unlocked.
Wi-Fi does not attempt reconnect to Access Point.
Status shows Wi-Fi in a state of scanning.
Preferred SSID is shown as available with good signal., but not connected/connecting
Disable Wi-Fi and re-enable Wi-Fi
Connection is re-established.
I have an XPERIA S v4.0.4 in the same Wi-Fi coverage zone using the same SSID and it connects every time. Just unlock the screen and a couple of seconds the preferred SSID is connected/re-connected. Every time.
XPERIA X10i
I did at one stage have a timed Airplane mode app that would disable Telephony and 6 hours later re-enable Telephony.
I was on a GB v2.3 build with DoomKernel V6 and XS system apps and after Telephony had been disabled is was _not_ possible to establish a Wi-Fi connection without restarting the phone. Although some times you could 'jag' it and make a re-connection, but mostly, it would only say disconnected and no options would re-establish a Wi-Fi connection to the preferred AP even when it was seen as an available AP and good signal. Disable and enable Wi-Fi did nothing.
After numerous other ROM/Kernel installs over time, I'm now back on GB v2.3 and DoomKernel V6 [root] with XS system apps.
This time round I only have to disconnect/re-connect to establish a Wi-Fi connection. No more phone reboots required, even in airplane mode.
Many times the Wi-Fi connection does re-establish itself, it's just a nuisance when it doesn't do it every time and you have to disable/enable Wi-Fi to establish a connection.
What I've tried without success.
[X] Added a static ARP on the router
[X] I changed wifi.supplicant_scan_interval down to 50 from 120 no change after a couple of days.
[X] Changed advanced Wi-Fi timeout from AC power and screen-off
I'll check logcat next time and see if that gives any clues.
Thanks for the input
Now, can someone swoop in and tell the solution?
Anyone?
If no one has any idea, are there steps on how to install a new custom ROM instead of the existing one?

seems that your bootloader is locked because i saw on that thread that you talking about that you are on Zdzihu cm7 rom with his kernel for locked bootloaders ... so i recommend this one to you :
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?zhdzap0cek4pkvh
by ThJap its totally fast and stable with no issues
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193001
just download the zip file and put it on sd card then go to xrecovery :
1. Full wipe, Wipe dalvik cache, and wipe battery stats.
2. Flash the ThGo_v.XXX.zip package via xRecovery
then its done.
