[Q]Unlocking EVO and ICS - HTC EVO 3D

Hey, I have a friend who unlocked his EVO 3D , he says 4G isn't working. He used HTCDev method. He was running android 2.3.4 . The reason I even want to unlock is to fix the Shutdown issues . from everything I've read its a problem with the software. If Unlock removes WiMax is there a new way that I can gain s-off ? With 2.3.4 or any downgrade way? I'm sorry for asking these noobish questions, just got my Shooter this Saturday and my last Android what the Speedy(EVO Shift) and when I rooted it was in Froyo so I never ran into this "Unlock" issue. Well if you could help me or leave a link to a similar thread where they answered my question that would be great. I've literally looked for 4 hours last night looking for rooting and unlocking processes and they all don't say that it locks Wimax. oh and quick question. 3vo will be getting ICS the end of April right? Just need confirmation or at least a link. Everybody says "Soon" . And that isn't helping.

Unlocking doesnot do anything to WiMax.Which Software version do you have? 2.08 or 2.17 ?
If you want to downgrade, there is a thread stickied in the CDMA dev section.

Help?

Software version is 2.17. Then how come Htcdev unlock method locks up Wimax? Is there another unlock method? Can i downgrade back to gingerbread 2.3.3? If memory serves . GB 2.3.3 doesnt have locked hboot and all that you needed was to
use Revolutionary. Am I right? Sorry for so many questions. I just want to know as much information regarding gaining S-off on the Shooter. and can you leave a link?

Just a quick search could have saved your time...
Here is a guide to downgrade hboot 1.5 to 1.4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547695
After that you will be on 2.3.3 and can get S-OFF via revolutionary.io
Then you can upgrade to 2.17 (not directly or the hboot will again be 1.5) with a different method.

Ok, thanks a lot for the information

Only difference between 2.08.651.2 and 2.08.651.3 is .3 has the recent security update OTA HTC/Sprint released and pushed .. a week or so ago.
Bootloader wasn't touched in the update.
Rooting should be same as 2.08.651.2 and hboot 1.5 using htc unlock method.
Good luck!

As I stated in my previous post in this thread, the only method avaible to root this version of the HTC EVO 3D is through HTC.
Root process is essentially two steps on this device.
1) Unlock the write protection on the internal memory
2) Load the su binary which grants root access on the device. This is generally loaded through a custom recovery.
There are a few guides sticky (meaning they are permanently at the top of the thread) in the CDMA development section. If you are unfamilar with the process and feel uncomfortable, I'd read 2-3 different guides to get a general feel for the overall process. To be honest, it is *fairly* straight forward and there are many guides posted all over.
If you're familar with ADB and fastboot, you can head straight to http://www.htcdev.com and follow their directions.
If you're interested in learning more generally about root itself, I have a free app in the market called All About Root which provides some great general information to help prepare any person looking to gain root access.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

Hboot 1.50 unlock, root and ICS?Please help!

I have to admit that I'm a little confused. I'm just about to meet a guy to trade my current phone for the 3D.
Some of the things I'm reading lead me to believe that unlocking with the HTC method, rooting, etc will NOT let me run ICS once it's released.
If I get a phone on 1.50 today and unlock and then root using the posted methods, does that keep me from being able to run ICS ever?
If no, why wouldn't I want to use the HTC method?
As an aside, will wi-fi tether work with 4G if I run wifi tether?
Please help!
Thans
You will be ok. If your cell comes with 1.5 you can still root using htc method and you will be able to have ics and will be able to tether as well.

The method for flashing ROMs with the hboot 1.50 is that you flash it differently (through fastboot) though there are many guides out now that make it even more simpler. Anyway, the guides out now make rooting and flashing a piece of cake so don't worry.
1.50 S-ON = no worries, one more step, all good
Thanks Guys. I'm freaked out but am going to give it a try. After having a Photon and an Epic Touch, I'm so glad I have my 3D back, even on 1.50 bootloader. I missed this phone.
unlock coming soon
hboot 1.5 will be unlocked soon. and all is good with having s on unlock from htc. just another step!
Idk I'm not getting my hopes up on the new 1.5 hb unlock. You can flash roms in recovery the kernel won't flash tho. Fortunately this is android so there's an app for that.

You will probably have to use the HTC method to unlock your device as it is probably on HBOOT 1.5. Take a look at the dev section under the stickies rollup to find information.
Edit: Damn, reaper beat me to this by like seconds..lol.
I've heard that the HTC unlock method doesn't work on 2.17.651.5, that it just fails to unlock. Is this true?

That's false it works some folks had a issue with the unlock code bin part where it would say unlocked but nothin would happen on your phone it would sit in hboot.
If this happens you need the stock 2.17 ruu exe run this and it will fix the issue . I didn't have a issue rooting mine on 2.17.
I have a link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334473 Check this out if you have issue make sure you grab the 2.17 update ruu exe. Latest stock rom radios and everything .
You don't need to be rooted to use the ruu exe.

software update question (pre root )/hboot 1.5

I'm currently stock (hboot 1.5,, software# 2.08.651.2,,prl version 21083). I am about to root as soon as I'm 100% sure of the procedure from start to finish. My question is, should i take any OTA updates before I root?,,,,,,,I'm fully aware of the risk in doing this, coming from the evo4g( really don't want to be stuck stock for months, while everyone else is flashing away),,,,I'm a firm believer of searching, before asking, but if there's a better software version to gain root from, I want to be running it.
I do realize that starting out with this version of software means I'm stuck with hboot 1.5,,just couldn't find any posts referencing later OTA software versions possibly being better or worse to root from

Nope, it matters not what software version you're on. Only hboot, and in you're case, like me, you're screwed either way :'(
I guess I figured as much, thanks,,,I'm a little confused about current root methods for hboot 1.5,,,I see there's fastboot/copynpaste/htc unlock(not too scary),,,install SU,,,something, something can't unlock boot partition(no kernals),,,possibly fastboot install recovery in order to be able to do so. I also read in another thread, there are two ways. The HTC way and a better XDA way, of rooting,,,I'm sold on a better XDA way,,,any suggestions?
The only way to root hboot 1.5 is to use the htcdev unlock.

Take the OTA (2.17.651.5) then unlock with htc method.
If you unlock now and use cstom recovery, you will have to flash stock recovery in order to update to (2.17.651.5) latest OTA.
And it will also break root i think. so better update first then unlock then root.
I have some updated info put together from several posts that may help you on your tour if hboot 1.50

Question! But you knew that already...

For those who are helpers with only the Sprint or GSM 3D, please ignore this post.
I repeat, this is about the Virgin Mobile Evo V 4G, if you know nothing about it, please don't try to help, you'll waste both of our time.
So let me begin, I'm going to root my Evo V 4G. But I've noticed quite a lot of things that tell you to do things with that tell you to downgrade the S-Off. Wonderful. But to downgrade, they say you should be unrooted, and locked.
So I have a couple of questions. First off, "What is S-Off and HBoot and all that."
Second, is there a point to downgrading the HBoot (because I believe it is a higher version on the V 4G).
And third, should I root it first, or do the HBoot downgrade, or both?
(And yes I understand I'm a noob, but coming from the Motorola Triumph, all you had to do was use Terminal Emulator to root, and then get a custom recovery and you were good.)
Please explain, from one dev to a noob. Thank you very much.
First off I'm no developer, but I've dealt enough w/ HTC phones to know most of what you ask. I could be mistaken a bit but from my understanding here is what you are asking about:
S-Off/S-On is basically a setting that tells the bootloader (HBOOT) if it should verify the stuff it is flashing has been signed by HTC.
HBOOT is the bootloader for HTC phones, it is responsible for booting the ROM or Recovery, it's also used for fastboot commands.
Downgrading your HBOOT may be necessary in order to get true S-OFF
an example would be the Evo 3D HBOOT 1.4 can be S-OFF'd with revolutionary (maintaining your warranty and giving true S-OFF), but 1.5 needs the HTC Dev Unlock method which doesn't give true S-OFF but allows flashing of some unsigned content. In this instance it's better to downgrade your HBOOT and get a real S-OFF.
As for which to do first, if S-OFF can be gotten on your current HBOOT version, I dont see a need to downgrade it at all. If you HAVE TO downgrade I'd do that first, get S-OFF then flash a recovery and rom that has root access already.
Anyone who reads this and sees a mistake, please correct it
For those who are helpers with only the Sprint or GSM 3D, please ignore this post.

And you're sure it's perfectly fine with the Virgin Mobile 3D, not just the Sprint one?
